  • What's up with Steam and Itch.io suddenly vanishing all those games and books and art and stuff? (The Verge) (archive site)

Proximate cause: Visa and Mastercard deciding they have to act as global fun censors.

Distal cause: Some group of Australian Stalinist nutcases called Collective Shout who have for years believed they have to act as global fun censors.
As a result of Collective Shout's actions, in tandem with the payment processors, over 20,000 games, books, comics, and other creative works - confirmed via the Internet Archive - functionally ceased to exist on the site (though purchased content remains in users' libraries so long as it doesn't violate itch.io's new guidelines), imperiling the creators who depend on sales from itch.io. In addition to NSFW content, notable projects that didn't have the tag were caught up in the purge as well.
    Anything not mandatory is forbidden.
Whenever a platform announces a blanket ban on adult content, LGBTQ+ creators are almost always disproportionately affected, harming queer artists and invariably queer people.
This is true, because "queer" artists and "queer" people are sex-obsessed lunatics, but I'll support them before a bunch of Stalinist fun censors who are probably from Melbourne anyway.

Update: Nope. Sydney. Well, I moved out of there just in time.

Tech News

  • AMD finally announced a Ryzen 9000 12 core chip with a 65W TDP. (Tom's Hardware)

The Ryzen 9 Pro 9945 is a lower power Ryzen 9900X.

The company also has - I only learned this today but it was announced a couple of months ago - the Epyc 4545P, which is a Ryzen 9000 16 core chip with a 65W TDP.

This is aimed at small servers, but it goes in Socket AM5 boards, the standard for AMD's desktop chips.

The 9950X, the full power desktop model, uses 170W of power by comparison. But it is 20% faster on average.

  • Corsair has announced its own version of the Ryzen AI Max mini desktop PC. (Liliputing)

These are really aimed at running AI on large models on your own hardware, because they can give you 128GB of video RAM for not much money.

I'm a little surprised that so many companies are bringing out models given that, at the price of $2000 for a 128GB model, there wouldn't seem to be that large a market.

A surprisingly small amount of work this morning; I have the feeling that something happened yesterday to stop everyone else and that as soon as the various hospitals open up for the day, I am going to be swamped.

The only cause for concern was a birthday greeting I got in my email:

Happy Birthday from all of us here at Will Surgical Arts!

34 G'morning Horde.

TweakTown has an article up about Visa's response to this adult material + payment processors thing:

https://tinyurl.com/4c3whvw6

It's not great.

My thoughts: The credit card companies have so much data on each user, they already know the age of the cardholder. The sensible thing to do would be to have a flag on a vendor: "Offers adult material". If that flag is set, check the buyer's age and the region. Is the buyer of legal age to purchase adult material in that region? Yes? Let the transaction go through. Done.

The fact that the CC companies are involving themselves with their own customer's business dealings in a "prior restraint" sort of way means this is about a lot more than just age verification. This is about generating fear, and thus wielding control on a large scale.

Combine this with a trend of the "Know your customer" and "Know your customer's customer" laws and regulations in the USA and Canada (and probably worldwide knowing how these things tend to go) and the efforts to discourage the use of cash...

Well let's just say I'm starting to have dark and dystopian thoughts that are as black as my coffee this morning.

38 @30/Rev. Wishbone:

The short version of a link for videos for Youtube (using the link you pasted) is as follows:

https://youtu.be/Y-4hp5HZ2aU

So:
Base url (up to and including the final forward slash)
plus:
Video ID

You get this by right clicking the video in Youtube and selecting "Copy Video URL".

When you paste it, strip out everything after the video ID, starting with the "?" which indicates "Parameters to follow" in a URL. All of that is unnecessary extra information.

May this be helpful to you and others here as well.

68 The fact that the CC companies are involving themselves with their own customer's business dealings in a "prior restraint" sort of way means this is about a lot more than just age verification.

This is the obvious follow-on to their earlier "we won't do payment processing for firearms businesses" bullshit. What needs to happen is that the US government needs to inform payment processors that if they block legal purchases, as policy, they will be fined an exorbitant amount per infraction. But they won't because it's what they want to happen.

I'm up after a dream that I had gone back to school, apparently at the big commuter state college I attended without enthusiasm in the early and mid-'70s. This appeared to be a physics class taught by some weedy-looking fellow in a pink sweater. It seemed the class did not understand him and was restless. Another grad student came in to take it over. I grabbed the chance to slide out to the men's room -- where, as usual in my dreams, the stalls had no doors. When I got back, *80%* of the class had left, and the second grad student was chatting casually with the remainder.

Don't know what it means, Red Ryder, but it must mean somethin'.

81 Another part of the dream: When I left the men's room, for some reason I could not go back through the corridor to the class. I had to leave the building and jog through darkness (? a night class?) and light rain to the front door. Earlier they'd had sandwiches and baked goods there to welcome the new students -- which never happened when I was a student there in reality. Unfortunately all that was left were packages of cookies. I grabbed a few freebies before returning to my now nearly empty classroom.

I dream of essentials.

The only time you hear about it is when they are going to parody some famous person.

Megan Markle and Harry got skewered by South Park a few years ago and it was in the news for a week or so.

The show is topical and they produce them pretty quickly. It’s known for still being worked on the same week the show airs.

That’s about all they have going for them.

I suppose it’s all about Trump, MAGA and ICE lately but I never watch it, or any adult animation.

I tried watching Futrurama on Hulu a few weeks back and got bored with it pretty quickly.

The last animated series I watched entirely was Attack on Titan but that’s a Japanese anime with very little humor.

Ha! There are several very good-looking cats in that cluster. No, the monsters are generally polite -- not crying, but trotting around me and giving me The Look.

Big Stirling nipped me -- gently -- twice this weekend. He used to try to chew me when he was a three-month kitten, which he's outgrown; but now his jaws and teeth are much bigger and stronger. For some reason he did it only when he was sitting on a cushion on my lap. I dispensed with the cushion yesterday, and he curled up on me twice just as usual, now nipping attempted.

I've accepted that Dagny will probably never be a lap cat, but she does like to hang around her people, and if you get down on the floor with her, she rolls on her back for belly rubs. Her idea of affection, I guess.

This appeared to be a physics class taught by some weedy-looking fellow in a pink sweater. It seemed the class did not understand him and was restless.

My first quarter calculus class at Michigan Tech in the autumn of '76 was taught by a professor who came from Taiwan and had a pronounced accent. (Yes, MTU scheduled classes in quarters, not semesters, back then.)

We thanked our lucky stars that he at least was writing out things as he taught, as we would have been puzzling out his neologisms caused by his accent, such as "delta etch", for a long time.

They were going after gun, ammo, and accessories, at one point.

You can’t have large financial companies denying service based on the whining of Karens to the Nanny State.

If it’s an illegal transaction, fine.
