Visited my surgeon yesterday, and everything is going well. He snipped out the stitches. I thought there would be pain, but plucking out a hair would have been worse. Another followup is slated for 8/13, but in the meantime, no heavy lifting of more than 10-12 lbs. This means I can't pick up 14-lb. Stirling but will have to pet him wherever he is. Ah, well; into each life a little rain must fall.

Oh, the shooting on the major avenue near where I live? Took place apparently at a Racetrac gas station/convenience store. The McDonald's is a block farther up. I've lived here for more than two decades and have watched buildings be torn down and new stuff erected. That location used to hold a city building of some kind; then it was vacant for several years before the Racetrac opened.

I was let go a month before my 64th birthday. I wound up doing contract design work for a previous employer. I am pretty much fully retired now at 74

"The Lion Sleeps Tonight" is a song with a very interesting history, as detailed in essays by Mark Steyn and Rian Malan. It started out as a song recorded by a Zulu group in South Africa (the lead singer created that haunting solo that begins the song), made its way to the US (with new lyrics), and ultimately found its way back to Africa.
