Blue Genes (sigh)

Well, perhaps the most inconsequential, yet prevalent, stories in media right now concern advertisements for blue jeans featuring an attractive young woman with blonde hair and blue eyes. A passing reference was made to "blue jeans" in connection with "genes" and "eye color". This led to wild speculations concerning the coming of a Fourth Reich and so forth. You have seen some of this craziness.

But this advertisement did not happen in a vacuum. As Walter Kirn wrote recently:

Old news is more important than new news because new news is built on top of it. When you are renovating a structure you don't start with the roof but with the foundation.
Let's go back and get the old stories right. Otherwise nothing will be right, from here on out.

In my youth, I met my best friend's uncle, who taught English at Cal Tech. One of his activities was writing dialog and music for their faculty musicals.

Yes, faculty musicals.

I remember a bit of a recording of a soliloque:

These scientists were not always as single-minded as they looked. Heh.

Anyway, my friend's uncle wrote a song entitled "Blue Genes" to celebrate some honor given to Watson and Crick.

So the "Blue Genes" play on words has been around for a while. But Hitler was not its source.

Incidentally, the quality of faculty artistic performances may have regressed since Cal Tech faculty members created and participated in musicals. (Start at 18 minutes)

Remember that protesters at Evergreen gave a black student of Bret Weinstein a hard time for studying science. Tried to get her to drop her educational plans.

The Black Honors College:

The BHC, which is unique within the CSU system, will welcome in 70 students in the fall of 2024. Each will receive a $2,000 scholarship. But I did notice a new live action comedy series, looked up the cast and the main characters are pretty, teenage white girls. Good luck winning back your old demographics after all the crap the last couple of years.

My theory is that society keeps functioning because of 50-year-old white guys - the guy who runs your local sewage treatment plant, for example.

They're not all 50-years-old, and they're not all white, but they are the people who have their jobs because they are competent, and are very, very good at their jobs.

75 We did a college tour of Texas Tech in Lubbock. It seemed like a normal college campus except there were almost no Asians. I work across from UT and it seems to be majority Asian. TTU is only 3% Asian, 5% black, 28% Hispanic, and the rest white. It was kind of weird. Nice campus and a good school though.

Personally, I hope you're right. My fear is when the blue states/cities truly go under the federal government will bail them out with our tax dollars (taxation without representation, yo). They already do this on a smaller scale with the SALT tax deduction. I would love to see Illinois or CA go under, but I think we'll bail them out.

I saw a few fire trucks as I was driving home yesterday. Was wondering if my house was still here. It is.

Was smelling for smoke, didn't seem to be any of that anywhere in the area.

So what were those trucks doing? Somebody probably had a case of heartburn, and they needed three trucks and an ambulance to show up, cuz what else they gonna do.

We could get fires around here, it's very dry, but we don't. I think firefighters probably spend 99% of their time NOT fighting fires. It's good to have them around if there is one, though. Assuming they're capable of dragging a firehose around, or carrying someone out of a smoky building.

Law has veered to the left for the last thirty or so years. And law schools were the vanguard for that which is why we see the stupid Resist! tactics.

Even the Federalist Society were more corporate oriented soft social leftism at most chapters in order to get jobs upon graduating.

FWIW, that retired judge under W got his job via the old blue slip system and the filibuster so probably was never a conservative in the first place.

The result of that for decades has been the leftward movement of the entire judiciary as a ratchet. Clarence Thomas or Scalia types became rare as judicial appointees in favor of DEI from the right like ACB, Sandra Day O'Conner, etc.

Yep. Got a grad degree from there--many moons ago but not my piled high and deep degree.

Strongest STEM degrees there are programs dealing with agriculture--agri engineering, ag economics, and so on. Civil engineering was ok when I was there and a former high school classmate was a prof in that department.

Tysons and other agri companies make sure that there are skilled folks in the College of Agriculture. Ironically no vet school though.

True fact, there are actually more guns now in Australia than immediately after the ban. You don't hear about them much but the criminals get their smuggled in and the inlanders and in the North shoot and shut up about it.

Australia is rather more like the US in that the land is so vast that a federal system reigns lightly over much of the land but everyone pays attention to what is going in Melbourne and Sydney rather than the rest of the country.

I assume that's because the "white world" urbanized and industrialized first, which almost universally leads to a sharply declining birth rate. The 3rd world, including China and India, didn't until much later. In another 100 years, who knows how things will look.

For some reason, the "free with ads" streaming channels like Tubi run Truvada ads all over the place. A lot of these ads have black and "ethnic" homos featured prominently. These are races that are generally not cool with teh ghey, so I find it an interesting casting choice.

(GM essentially killed Cadillac in the 80s by making literal Chevys with different badges and no other changes. Now it exists mostly to sell Escalades to rappers).

Honda and Nissan both came to the same conclusion for Acura and Infiniti, and it's been proven in other industries many times.

There have always been two Lexuses: the bespoke models that aren't Toyotas (the GS, LS, RC, and LC) and the high-volume ones that are (the ES and all of the SUVs). Even the ones based on Toyotas were traditionally built to higher standards though - it took them 3 years to train their Kentucky plant workers to make the ES to Japanese spec even though it largely is a Camry with a nicer interior.

322 Personally, I hope you're right. My fear is when the blue states/cities truly go under the federal government will bail them out with our tax dollars (taxation without representation, yo). They already do this on a smaller scale with the SALT tax deduction. I would love to see Illinois or CA go under, but I think we'll bail them out.

Ah, but: what if the feds did this:

CA is a shambles, their government pleads for a federal government bailout. The feds come in and tell CA “Sure, we will pay off all your debt. But it will cost you. The State of CA becomes the Territory of CA and we start this whole thing over again.”
