Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | THE MORNING RANT: The EV De-Transition Is Accelerating– 7/25/2025![]() Transportation services company Matson has suspended shipments of electric vehicles (EVs) and lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries – a subtype of lithium-ion battery chemistry commonly used in EVs – over concerns related to fire risks during transit.More carriers will likely follow, especially when insurance becomes too expensive, or completely unattainable. [h/t to Scampydog for sending me this story.]
2) The left denies me the freedom to buy what I want, making EVs the only option. 3) People like me deny the left the freedom to buy EVs, making ICE vehicles the only option. I very much wanted Option #1. My principles are strongly aligned with Option #1. But my principles also state that when someone tries to deny me the freedom of my principles, then my principles become more flexible. The left decided to reject Option #1 and instead jammed Option #2 down the throat of freedom-loving Americans, therefore Option #3 is the default choice. EVs should therefore be banned. But what about Tesla and Rivian, which only build electric cars? No worries, they can simply obey the “ICE mandate” and start building ICE vehicles if they want to survive. That is really no different than what Team EV tried to impose upon traditional auto manufacturers when blue states starred banning EVs and Biden imposed his mandates. The State of California is moving to ban the sale of Tesla cars amid claims that the company and its CEO, Elon Musk, have misled buyers about the self-driving capabilities of their cars.It may just be a one-month suspension of Tesla’s license to sell vehicles in California, but that is one month of sales in Tesla’s largest market. Ouch. For years, Tesla has earned billions of dollars from its competitors just for selling electric vehicles. But that windfall is about to go away, just when the company may need it the most. According to a recent note from analysts at William Blair and Co., the automakers “that fail to meet standards no longer incur fines, eliminating market demand for Tesla’s credits.” The analysts expect Tesla’s regulatory credit revenue to fall by 75% next year and disappear completely by 2027.Tesla is about to lose about $9,000 per unit of revenue that is being paid by you and me. If Teslas are as amazing as all its fans keep writing me, they shouldn’t mind paying $9,000 more so that I don’t have to keep subsidizing them. If you study the early phases of our Revolution (before Lexington and Concord), local committees and the Sons of Liberty enforced boycotts on British goods and cowed loyalists into compliance. Yet these same people defaulted to freedom as soon as independence was secured in their area (so much so that the Framers had to devise a better Constitution after events like the Shay's Rebellion).
There's precedent for freedom loving Americans jamming a policy option down on freedom haters in our midst. Posted by: the lower depths at July 25, 2025 11:08 AM (+b4rY) 14

I am likewise conflicted about Elon.
However I'll never forgive him for what Tesla did the automotive industry. If it were not for Tesla, the *idea* that we could magically convert to EV's would never have been considered a possibility by the political dimwits that tried to force them on us. So when Tesla fails and gets kicked in the shins - I celebrate. Thats not even including the other idiocy that Tesla has brought to the auto market - such as giant screens everywhere, electronic door latches, no gear selector (it just knows when you want to go forward or reverse) the steering yoke, steer by wire... any number of idiotic "features" that only nerds and idiots find interesting or useful but somehow manage to trickle into other car brand's models. Ford also announced a $3.5 billion investment for a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery plant in Michigan, creating 2,500 jobs. • Stellantis: Committed $5 billion to the U.S., including reopening an assembly plant in Belvidere, Illinois, previously shuttered in 2023. • Volkswagen: Plans to invest $20 billion in North America, with $10 billion allocated to its Chattanooga, Tennessee plant, $5 billion for a joint venture with Rivian, and $5 billion for Scout Motors to produce extended-range EVs. • Toyota: Invested $1.4 billion in its Princeton, Indiana plant for EV assembly and has announced approximately $4 billion in U.S. investments over the past year, inc Posted by: andycanuck at July 25, 2025 11:14 AM (2yoRf) 40

I've been saving this one for a Morning Rant like this!
The great EV pullback has begun (The Verge). “Automakers that delayed launches over the last few years might have benefited from monitoring the market; however, today’s escalating challenges could be deemed insurmountable, likely resulting in more outright cancellations if the models lack a future abroad,” says Ivan Drury, director of insights at Edmunds. Electric vehicles are great for a second car. I think they will still take over the world markets. We will get out of reverse again soon. Solid state EV's will be available right around the time Trump leaves office. If Dems get a trifecta in 2028, then the EV credits will be back, and solid state EV’s will get twice the range with half the charging time, boosting sales through the roof. EV’s aren’t going away. The subsidies, IMO, are to encourage non-polluting vehicles (which is why Trump is removing them). Note Newsom is proposing to take up the slack in CA if Trump ends credits. it didn't help that arguably the most prolific EV maker turned out to be a Nazi. >>Solid state EV's will be available right around the time Trump leaves office. If Dems get a trifecta in 2028, then the EV credits will be back, and solid state EV’s will get twice the range with half the charging time, boosting sales through the roof. EV’s aren’t going away.
This statement right here is proof positive that this person has absolutely no fucking clue about electricity, physics or the way batteries work. You cannot charge *any battery* "with half the charging time" without doubling the input power. Its that pesky equation kWh = kW * h If you half the h you need to double the kW (Volts * Amps). Where you going to get that power from toots? Ain't going to be from no windmill or solar panel. There is no Solid State battery tech that will change that - and solid state battery tech has been by and large oversold as far as its capabilities. Europeans are obsessed with making everything smaller - even though they don't need to for the most part. Just took a trip to Iceland - you couldn't find more open space if you tried - and they still managed to build hotels with bathrooms and showers that are more like phone booths. At this point, I am receptive to an “ICE mandate” in retaliation for the EV mandate they tried to impose on me. Team EV needs to suffer a total defeat in the EV battles, not just a setback.
I don't think there was ever an official "EV mandate", at least at the federal level. I think in certain blue states like California, there was legislation calling for an explicit mandate for percentage of sales, or cars on the road, that had to be EVs. But at the federal level, they went about it corruptly by not passing an explicit mandate, but instead simply making the EPA regulations so impossible to meet with ICE vehicles that EVs were the only way to meet the regulations. I think legislation to ban EVs until there is a solution to the EV battery thermal runaway problem is the only way to prevent an eventual leftist President simply reinstating the EPA "EV mandate" regulations again. US to leave Doha talks as Hamas not acting in good faith, Witkoff says
The United States will examine “alternative options” to bring home the 50 captives held by Hamas as the terrorist group “does not appear to be coordinated or acting in good faith,” U.S. Mideast envoy Steve Witkoff said on Thursday. “We have decided to bring our team home from Doha for consultations after the latest response from Hamas, which clearly shows a lack of desire to reach a ceasefire in Gaza,” U.S. President Donald Trump’s point man in the talks wrote in an X post on Thursday afternoon. ==== Alternative Options > All Hell Breaking Loose Posted by: San Franpsycho at July 25, 2025 11:37 AM (JvZF+) 146

What subject material would you train an AI on to decide that it didn't know something? My biggest fear is not that AI will take over, my biggest fear is that elite idiots will *let* it "take over", thinking it can. I sometimes use an AI assistant in programming. You'll start to type one line and then, boom the line you needed to type becomes available for tab completion. You'll tab complete it. You start another line and usually if it's related, boom another line appears almost the way you type it. And then you think it's a rhythm; it's really getting the hang of where you want to go. But about the 3rd or 4th completion, you'll see something and go "Where the hell would you get the idea that that's even useful to do?" Here's the thing, it can pull off a handful of successful guesses as to what a human is going to type next. That's "next word prediction". Posted by: Axeman at July 25, 2025 11:43 AM (krQz2) 173

Its the very old past.
This is one of the things that gets me. I hear so often that if only electric vehicles had been around as long as gas vehicles, theyd be just as efficient or better. I point out that there have been battery-operated vehicles literally since the dawn of the automobile; they predate the gas-powered auto. They agree, then the next time the EV conversation comes up, literally repeat the same if only. It's a chemical fire. Water doesn't necessarily do much. You need foam to smother the fire.
They act like thermite, not needing oxygen to burn, so smothering them does nothing. You need something to counteract the chemical reaction, which is rare and expensive. Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at July 25, 2025 11:54 AM (dfIr7) Also, it's possible the fire is hot enough that submerging it in water will prompt splitting the water molecules, increasing the amount of oxygen available to the fire. The salvage crew found that their only chance of putting out the fire was to cool it by flooding the deck with seawater, to cool everything down enough to stop burning. Car carriers however have long open decks. I guess the short and sweet summary is that they were successful in putting the fire out; unfortunately, they sank the ship doing it. Lithium batt advertisements I noticed cleverly suggest they have “built in protection circuitry” that prevent re-charging once it approaches freezing temperatures. As if this is a feature, and not a bug.
I am well-versed in lead-acid battery charging. This was all hashed out 100 years ago, and a very mature technology. And it is a huge pain in the ass to charge in freezing or zero/subzero temperatures. Due to internal battery resistance charging times are longer, and voltages need to increase to compensate. And the current output is degraded to boot. But it can be done. A charging system, a battery power supply that is bricked once temps hit 35 deg. or so is a non-starter right there. Golf Carts for a second car make sense for some people some places. No need for a F950 Earth Fucker to pick up a loaf of bread. But they didn’t go that route. One size fits all, no choice, and it costs $40,000 probably, your government at work. Posted by: Common Tater at July 25, 2025 12:03 PM (9aAxm) 233

I work in the battery industry and this is pretty strange since LFP batteries are not very flammable (any battery will burn, including lead acid) and can be extinguished, and the fires that have been experienced are with batteries using NMC (or NCM) materials. Those materials are highly flammable and impossible to put out in practical terms - you just let them burn til they stop.

It's early, "I hate America and want to see everything burn because of acid rain," from Stephen King under the Richard Bachmann pseudonym.

"Screenwriting, pre-production, production, post-production on a movie that size is generally about 2 years.
Posted by: TheJamesMadison" Ok. But should Running Man really be that size? Does everything have to be 300 million dollars? We already know it will suck. Hollywood is just burning money on screen. Or is it Blackrock is just burning money on screen? I don't know where to follow the money to. Posted by: eleven at July 25, 2025 12:20 PM (fV+MH) 280

FWIW, he has some loyal fans at AOS for his writing.
He used to write a lot. Some of it is great. Some of it is okay. Some is horrible. Its interesting, because some of it is horror only in the sense that there are monsters in it. From a Buick 8 was a wonderful cop book; the horror element is there only to let Stephen King be the author. Its just this thing in the background that ties the drama together. The Cell, on the other hand, is horror in a sense that I dont think was ever contemplated by King. Posted by: Stephen Price Blair at July 25, 2025 12:21 PM (EXyHK) 282

For a brief shining moment in the early 1970s, one could order all manner of stuff “Free” from the Government Printing Office. I think they had some advertisements about this. My older brother latched on to this, and got all sorts of crap, Media Mail delivered, a lot of it from Pueblo, Colo. lots of posters and stuff adorned his room, sent in those hard mailing tubes. Big heavy tomes of nonsense government this and that.
I think the Mailman wanted to strangle him. He was always getting shit, he’d have to make a special trip to stack stuff on the porch. Posted by: Common Tater at July 25, 2025 12:24 PM (Rimwk) 284
I think the Tesla board has something to do with the lack of activity on his third party. They were pretty upset when he announced plans to do it.

This is beautiful. It’s effectively an “ICE vehicle mandate” from Trump, but not technically. Manufacturers can build and sell all the EVs they want. They’ll just need battery suppliers to mine the EV battery materials domestically (good luck with that) or pay the 93% tariff.
The only problem with this is that is a temporary fix to the issue. Once a WEF-stooge leftist Democrat gets back into the White House, they will simply put back in place the radical EV-only EPA regulations and we're back to where we were a year ago, on the road to the WEF Agenda 2030. What has to happen is the complete destruction of the WEF plan and the complete destruction of the "climate change" agenda. Since that is the rationale these radicals use to justify their tyrannical policies. It's all to "save the planet". This EV nonsense and windmills and solar panels will never be completely done away with until that ideology is completely shown to be fraudulent and the people who push it are ostracized from society and positions of power/influence. EVs are like leopards: they're dangerous, they're expensive, and they require special facilities to keep in a densely populated area. Also like leopards, if rich people want to own one they should absolutely be allowed to do so as long as they pay for the necessary safety measures and facilities to ensure their purchase doesn't negatively impact the other people around them.
And also like leopards, the government mandating that everyone should own one, subsidizing their purchase, and spending taxpayer money on specific facilities for them should never be allowed to happen. Posted by: Daniel Ream at July 25, 2025 12:55 PM (LgYtf) 288
Contrary to what Buck thinks, the transformation to EVs will happen, whether America has a role or not. Over 50% of new vehicles sold in China are EVs and 25% in Europe. Battery energy density and charging speeds improve every year, and while EVs are close to price parity with ICE vehicles, they will continue to get CHEAPER, while ICE prices will continue to climb. If the Big 3 are not competitive in EVs, they will either be bought by foreign automakers or become marketing arms for those companies, slapping respected American brands on Chinese designed and built vehicles.

In my areas there are plenty of wealthy leftist couples here they both work from home and yet they have two new cars.
And they will tell you "well everyone can afford to pay a little more to save the earth right?" Posted by: 18-1 at July 25, 2025 11:34 AM If they truly wanted to "save the earth", they would sell their cars and travel public transportation everywhere. "But then there is Tesla…"
Don't leave out Tesla Energy, which manufactures and promotes the installation of solar panels for electricity production. Solar power will *always* be more expensive than other electricity sources, since it cannot be harvested even 12 hours/day, and its storage and grid requirements are vastly more expensive than the infrastructure required for natural gas-fired power plants. For those pushing the EV fire canard, ICE vehicles are FAR MORE likely to catch on fire than EVs (Google kbb EV fires). Yes, EV fires are more difficult to put out, but modern techniques and equipment make it straight-forward.
What ultimately drives the transition to EVs is the 90% vs. 30% efficiency of EV drivetrains vs. ICE and the decreasing cost of batteries. Posted by: Salubrious at July 25, 2025 01:34 PM (7bavB) 294

On this topic, found a GREAT article from Issues & Insights (via Realclearpolicy.com) that the OBBB effectively KILLED the CAFE standards. Oh the couldn't kill the fact that the standards exist due to the Byrd rule for reconciliation (F*k you very much, Senate Parliamentarian).
What they did was change the PENALTY to auto manufacturers for not following CAFE standards to ZERO DOLLARS! Since this WAS allowed under the Byrd Rule (hey, it's a finanial/budget change!), it is now THE LAW! As disingenuous as the DNC. Elon has always been against the EV mandates and the subsidy, but you don't want to report that. Luddite about EV's is no way to go through life.
