80s Pro Wrestling Legend Terry "Hulk Hogan" Bollea Dies
Chuck Mangione, RIP

Trump tributed him as a "great friend" and "MAGA all the way."

Apparently he died of a heart attack. He was 71.

President Donald Trump has joined the masses mourning the loss of WWE legend Hulk Hogan.

Trump, who had a strong relationship with Hogan for years, which included the wrestling great speaking at the Republican National Convention last year, wrote a tribute on Truth Social for the "Hulkster."

"We lost a great friend today, the "Hulkster." Hulk Hogan was MAGA all the way -- Strong, tough, smart, but with the biggest heart," Trump wrote. "He gave an absolutely electric speech at the Republican National Convention, that was one of the highlights of the entire week. He entertained fans from all over the World, and the cultural impact he had was massive.

"To his wife, Sky, and family, we give our warmest best wishes and love. Hulk Hogan will be greatly missed!"

As many are commenting, a lot of GenX pop culture icons are dying. (As I sadly mentioned, the deaths of 70s pop icons are due to really start ramping up.)

Terry Bollea's greatest victory came not over The Undertaker or the Iron Sheik or even Jake "The Snake" Roberts but over the grotesque Venture Defamation startup Gawker.

Gawker published a revenge-porn sex tape of Bollea's, and the Hulkster -- backed by manager/trainer Peter "The Tech Avenger" Thiel -- pile-drived Gawker into actual bankruptcy.

Bollea's star had diminished considerably by 2012, when blog-era media giant Gawker published a brief clip from a stealthily recorded sex tape of Hogan and Heather Clem, then-wife of Bollea's then-best friend, radio personality Bubba the Love Sponge. The clip was featured in a post by former Gawker editor in chief AJ Daulerio, a meditation on celebrity sex tapes. Just days after the sex tape's publication, Hogan sued for emotional distress and invasion of privacy. For its part, Gawker defended its inclusion of the clip by arguing that the footage was newsworthy, considering Hogan's celebrity status and past comments on his sex life.

In March 2016, a Florida jury found in favor of Hogan, awarding him $115 million in compensatory damages and $25 million in punitive damages. The verdict ultimately bankrupted Gawker, hastening an end to digital media's freewheeling blog era. (The website was revived in 2021 under owner Bryan Goldberg, but shuttered again just two years later.)

Perhaps more shocking than the verdict itself, however, was the revelation of who paid for the lawsuit in the first place: Two months after the smoke cleared, Forbes reported that tech billionaire Peter Thiel had been bankrolling Bollea. The former Paypal Mafia member spent roughly $10 million on the lawsuit, apparently with the aim of destroying Gawker, as revenge for outing him as gay in a 2007 post.

Hulk Hogan was, I have it on good faith, a Real American.

Am I wrong in thinking that's actually a Todd Rundgren song? (NOPE! Close though -- it's Rick Derringer. I mean, the names are close.)

Terry spoke at the RNC in 2024.

I liked this half-ironic, half-serious tribute on Always Sunny:

Late 70s jazz trumpeter and flugelhornist Chuck Mangione has also died at age 84.

"Good innings," as the Brits and Aussies say.

8 Allow me to nerd out for a minute but Hogan revolutionized wrestling not once, but twice.

His rise with the WWF established it as a mainstream entertainment company, but his heel turn in WCW ushered in a new era of more reality based stuff that's around today.

Pretty impressive for a dude who basically had the same look since he was like 25.

27 To me "Hulk" was a 1-trick pony of a wrestler.

That was a Vince McMahon thing. In his AWA days against Bockwinkel he could move around and do some holds. Whenever he went to Japan he'd wrestle a bit. I'd never call him a great worker - but he could do some stuff. He was athletic - especially for his size. Steroids obviously helped a lot.

Surprised the guy made it to 71. Wrestling and Steroids are not good for your health.

Negative. In his younger days, he picked a fight at a Waffle House in Memphis. I am not making this up and you can find this yourself. Randy Savage was every bit as out of control in real life as you saw on screen.

So the dumb ass picks the fight in the Waffle House, and the other guy pulls a knife. So Savage grabs ... a butter knife. And proceeds to getting his ass carved up.

Then, when Memphis Police show up, he wants to fight them. So they put the dogs on him. And he gets his ass chewed up after being cut up.

There are frequent Mangione appearances, and his "Feels so good" flugelhorn notes get played a lot.

Mangione knocks out an insufferable wiener anger management class teacher in one episode for spelling his name wrong on the diploma.

Mangione also appears in an episode where Dale is brought in to kill rats at the Mega Lo Mart. It turns out Mangione is secretly living in the store after he signs a contract that requires him to be at every Mega Lo Mart opening, and they open hundreds of stores per year.

Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass deserve a second re-appreciation — his arrangements were in retrospect genius, managing to be but simple and catchy at the same time, with pitch-perfect sound clarity as well. He had a talent for taking previously boring or dreary songs, and making them suddenly hip and upbeat -- in particular "What Now My Love" and "A Taste of Honey," which he transformed from suicide dirges to snappy dance hits.

A & M had a solid track record. (The "A" stood for Alpert; he and Jerry Moss, the "M," formed the company.). ENDING CRIME AND DISORDER ON AMERICA’S STREETS

Section 1. Purpose and Policy. Endemic vagrancy, disorderly behavior, sudden confrontations, and violent attacks have made our cities unsafe. The number of individuals living on the streets in the United States on a single night during the last year of the previous administration — 274,224 — was the highest ever recorded. The overwhelming majority of these individuals are addicted to drugs, have a mental health condition, or both.[ . . . ] The Federal Government and the States have spent tens of billions of dollars on failed programs that address homelessness but not its root causes, leaving other citizens vulnerable to public safety threats.

Shifting homeless individuals into long-term institutional settings for humane treatment through the appropriate use of civil commitment will restore public order. Surrendering our cities and citizens to disorder and fear is neither compassionate to the homeless nor other citizens. My Administration will take a new approach focused on protecting public safety.

Fogelberg said that "same old lang syne" was a true story, for him. In high school he and a girl were madly in love with each other and swore to marry each other. Then after high school he left town and got lost in his music career, she stayed home and married someone else. He was back to see his family at a Christmas break, and they ran into each other by chance.
