The Morning Rant [Diogenes]
Victor Davis Hanson, somebody whom I greatly admire, said something a couple of weeks ago which prompted me to stir up the grey matter and start hitting the keyboard. He said the Left/Democrats are essentially engaging in Sedition and Insurrection.
Hmmm… --Sedition is conduct or speech inciting people to rebel against the authority of a state.--Insurrection is crime and/or a violent uprising against an authority or government.
Serious charges indeed. Kinda sounds true too, don’t they? And this caused me to think back on what I remember of the scale of conflict. Just where is America today?
Back in the late 80's I was running one of the Training Divisions for officers and senior NCOs, at the Army's Intelligence School. At that time, Low Intensity Conflict (LIC) was the big thing, it was de rigueur for military studies. The thinking then (among some anyway) was that all future wars were going to be LIC because nation-states could not afford long protracted WW2/Korea kinds of fighting (think Ukraine); and Vietnam was, ultimately, a failed application of big army tactics (and politics) in a low-scale protracted infantry war.
I appreciated the LIC advocates then, but never was fully on board with their perspective. Does Special Operations designed to counter LIC have a role? Sure. But they aren’t the end-all to warfighting. I have several reasons for my position. --Wars have a life of their own and predicting them is a fool’ errand.--Many of the LIC advocates were, frankly, a bit insufferable so I wasn’t inclined to agree with them.
--And, I very much believe you will always need tanks and artillery at some point in a nation’s existence to continue as a nation. I feel somewhat vindicated in that two years after that assignment, The Army was engaged in the biggest tank battle since the Battle of Kursk. Interestingly one of those LIC advocates showed up at my van during Desert Storm essentially looking for places to send his special operators. I looked at him and just said, “LIC huh?” He at least had the good sense to laugh. So what is Low Intensity Conflict? Its definition has evolved to this: LIC is a limited politico-military struggle to achieve political, social, economic, or psychological objectives. It is often protracted and ranges from diplomatic, economic, or psychological pressures through terrorism and insurgency. LIC is generally confined to a geographic area and is often characterized by constraints on the weaponry, tactics, and levels of violence. So, it is pretty much anything you want it to be. Today we see alarming growth in each of the areas of political, social, economic and psychological arenas. Pick a venue, city or state and we see “protestors” becoming more organized, better equipped, and better trained, and working towards specific objectives. Violence is trending upwards, and it is working its way through different urban areas (the preferred battlespace) and tactics are getting better. But…is it LIC or really just upticks in crime? What is going on? Examples include (and in no particular order): • Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officials are accusing Rep. Salud Carbajal (D-CA) of setting a mob of left-wing rioters on an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent, which landed the agent in the emergency room. • Democrat Perkins being happy about the lives lost in Texas because they were all white. • Two assassinations of ICE agents. • Two assignation attempts against President Trump. • Judges ruling on ridiculous cases completely outside their venues. • ANTIFA/BLM direct actions in cities like Seattle, Portland, Chicago, NY, etc. • Attacks on Tesla cars and drivers • Pennsylvania Governor’s mansion broken into and burned. • New Mexico’s Republican HQs burned • No King rally’s coinciding with political murders in Minnesota. And so much more… So, I won’t bore you all with definitions and studies and such about all this. You are all smart enough to see what is happening. Bottom line question…is this just violence as usual, or is America in a Low Intensity Conflict? What do you think?

No - because it is amorphous, unorganized, and has no serious identifiable leadership. It is a large amount of criminal activity, but it can still be dealt with through the regular criminal system.
Now if certain jurisdictions refuse to enforce their laws, that is a different matter entirely, and may call for those lower level authorities to be dissolved and for Federal Authority to take their place for an indefinite time.

My impression from talking with left-leaning acquaintances is they believe that political violence will ultimately accrue to their benefits. When you bring up certain historical realities ... the tendency of political violence to expand beyond their preferred targets and the historical norm that those who come into power through political violence will continue to use violence as a tool of control evokes the response that there is no other way to achieve the society they want.

Then I look at your list of examples above and I don’t think there’s some committee or command group organizing all these as grand strategy. There are thousands of different crazies at ground level and several (hundreds) at a Soros type level doing funding. But I think they’re all amorphous and not really coordinated. So… no command structure and maybe similar but not even coordinated goals.
So… there’s not even a single “enemy” so it’s not LIC… just crime from bad people

Must point out those are two completely different categories of abuse; the first was by hostile government actors using the shield of authority to do what they wished. I believe that on any large scale level has now been shut down, although of course there are still very hostile areas such as the State of California.
The second category is individual criminal action, and as long as those doing it are subjected to the weight of criminal law, plus their financial backers should be prosecuted to the fullest extent.

There are thousands of different crazies at ground level and several (hundreds) at a Soros type level doing funding. But I think they’re all amorphous and not really coordinated. Hopefully enough people can recognize the signs and do something about it. I'm not sure the Trump administration has fully wrung all the denial out of their system but I'm hoping they do soon.

That is by design it seems, a modern smoke screen to obscure that a larger and more coordinated multi year, geographically diverse seditious insurrection is occurring.
Looking back at the 60s revolutionary terrorism and comparing it to what blew up when Trump was elected, is in this current situation the insurrection finds, at a minimum, actors deeply sympathetic to the top line goal of nullifying the US government and social structure. It's not exactly true that the Left has nowhere to turn now but to violence, but they are running out of non-violent options. Violence has always been an urge for the Left running throughout its history. They play the political game insofar as they can maintain the pretense; their everyday politics is driven by pseudo-violent strategies such as lies, slander and militant propaganda to compensate for their historically failed, authoritarian policies.

So I'd argue this speaks to some level of organization and coordination. On the PDX scene.

She knows that I was an original LIB (Let It Burn), so it possibly sounds the same to her, but I mainly want government to crash if they are going to, and we can bring back Constitutional representative government.
She also knows I have no absolutely sacred cows. But I draw a line at upheaval, all the same. You don't have to be touchy about people paying homage to your belief system in order to be worried about a total breakdown of social order.

Right now, I think it's mostly loosely organized tantrums by spoiled young adults and aging hippies.

Minor 1st Gulf War tank story.
Recently, I stopped out to help a guy, more of wild man biker, stranded when his bike suddenly broke down and he found himself without a phone. After making sure he got hooked up with help I stayed and had a long conversation with him because he actually was exactly what he looked like: a wild man biker.
And a 1st Gulf War tank gunner.
He blew up a lot of shit as he would say. Best story. His tank got to a fake Iraqi dune where Iraqi tanks were dug in. They drove up on one to get a better view of the land. It was then they realized they were next to and above an Iraqi tank; mere feet below them. They backed down off the dune, got behind the Iraqi tank and from point blank range sent its occupants to Allah. This is something they repeated many times that day cuz that is where the the enemy was.
And until the weren't.

Back in 2020, they were running the classic Communist revolutionary playbook. Level 1 insurgency on the streets with BLM and antifa as cannon fodder intended to provoke overreaction leading to a Winter Palace incident (Kent State if you will) that they didn't get. There's a thing I've noticed (I'm sure I'm not the first), but the Left or progressives or whatever term you like, always have to be 'fighting' something. They're always struggling against some perceived evil. 'Fighting' seems to define them.
I thought about something I read about the Indians. How a tribe's greatness and prestige could be measured by 'how great their enemies be'. Maybe it's the same with today's leftist assholes. They have to fight something to feel worthy or authentic. I fight, therefore I am, and I am good.

I've lived awhile in my neighborhood and have good relations with pretty much all of them. Which is a good benefit of walking your dogs along the street--you and the dogs get exercise and you meet neighbors including new ones over time that way.
We have 37 days worth of MREs in the closet.
Not a major prepper, but the MREs aren't the only thing she's bought.

Diogenes, I am not that familiar with Cubans actually. I did hear two different cigar makers comment that today there were only 2-3 sticks they'd make much effort to get (of course I forget the names). The reasoning was the quality of "new world" cigars, and the declining quality of Cubans.
Back when I would just burn an occasional one, and I was traveling a lot and Cuban prices were below Davidoff or Padron in the duty free shops (or tabacchias in Rome), I would always come back with some. But I never developed much expertise or preference (though the R y J 5-packs that were $17 - !! - in Rome were a favorite for a while).
Weasel gets his from Switzerland. Let us know how it is when you burn it. If the oil well out back starts producing again, I might consider nibbling on Cubans, but they're now very expensive. Have two R y Js I picked up sorta by mistake in the Caribbean last year.

Not really true. Si vis pacem, para bellum is a good saying--if you want peace, prepare for war. Otherwise when the other side raises the flag of rebellion, you are forced to surrender everything.
So many of the same issues that one faces dealing with criminals are useful preparation for civil unrest--head on a swivel, awareness of exit strategies, preparation mentally to fight or flee and exactly what you are prepared to do to save your self and loved ones, etc.
Then add on the std. prep you would for natural disasters in your area--power, food, light, water, medicines, etc.

Most people are unaware that outside of the border provinces, Afghanistan was safer than Russia, Brazil, Mexico, or Nigeria, places people travel routinely. Petty crime was a bigger threat than terrorism. If you had the level of security you would have in Mexico City or Lagos, you were just fine. Haven't been there in years, but I bet that's still true.

I think there are broad swaths of the world that are not 'safe' for outsiders but just fine for those that live there. This is exponentially true for solo visits of a female or even several females without male companions. Situational awareness is critical in such places, especially if you are required to be unarmed.
Seemingly 'nice' places like natural trails or forest parks can contain a lot of two legged predators waiting for someone to prey upon.
Tourists frequently are the prey of predatory criminals because they are unfamiliar with the area, often believe themselves to be perfectly safe, and frequently like to do drugs, drink, etc. on vacay. Auslanders are easy pickings even in Europe when they ignore basic safety rules.

Perhaps some hybrid of UW and IW? But they are limited as they can't keep the movement going since leftists are lazy by nature and don't have the long term goal dedication. Sure, the hard core members and puppeteers may, but if you don't have a collective group who has "drunk the kool-aid" and who doesn't have the attention span of a hamster, the movement goes nowhere. Add that the will of the population just isn’t there and most likely never will be, which is another contributing factor to the success of an insurgency. They have done some things, bits and pieces here and there that could somewhat fit into the insurgency column, but nothing as a collective that’s balanced out throughout and a solid infrastructure. Infiltration into government may be somewhat successful, however without all the other baseline needs it dies on the vine. I will also add that yes, the LIC mindset after the fact, i.e. “once the war starts” doesn’t make any sense. Those are the things that have to be established well prior to crisis/war and make take years to develop, quite frankly, commander have not had that at the top of their list as they are more for the quick win.

I really think we are going to have to move away from the whole factory K-12 industry into students learning at their own pace--this is one area where AI and tech can make megabux if they are willing to drop their lefty notions. For higher ed, I think we are going to have to go away from teh rah rah campus bullshit to literally campuses without walls.
Those truly interested in learning versus credentialist types is key here.
What that would mean though is literally making the expensive education credentials meaningless which is why those benefiting from economic and social power in the US will fight it tooth and nail.

No access to major roads on the KY side for a couple of blocks. Even then the area has too many go arounds.

If they had gone to that area - it had potential to become entertaining

There does have to be a dedicated number of skilled trades individuals, but there are also a lot more slots that need filled by general labor. Those are the jobs that got outsourced to foreign countries.
I don’t think that the foreign labor pool is ‘highly skilled’ in comparison to the US, we just were willing to destroy local jobs in search of low prices.
