Father of Heavy Metal Ozzy Osbourne Dies at Age 76

More of you guys are fans than I would have guessed. So here's a short-duration thread.

Ozzy Osbourne, the legendary Prince of Darkness and one of heavy metal's most iconic stars, has died. He was 76.

He died "surrounded by love," his family said in a statement to The Post Tuesday. "It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning. He was with his family and surrounded by love. We ask everyone to respect our family privacy at this time. Sharon, Jack, Kelly, Aimee and Louis."

News of Osbourne's death comes more than five years after he announced his Parkinson's disease diagnosis in January 2020.

Born John Michael Osbourne in Birmingham, England, on Dec. 3, 1948, he was nicknamed "Ozzy" in primary school.

He had a challenging childhood, but music provided him with an outlet.

Learning was difficult for him due to dyslexia, and the future Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee claimed to have been sexually abused by bullies when he was 11. He also recalled attempting suicide as a teen.

"Cecil" on YouTube pointed out last year that, actuarially speaking, all the big rock stars of the 70s era are going to start dying in big numbers. Especially since those guys definitely lived hard and seemed eager to die.

I never listened to Black Sabbath, except for the three or four radio hits they played on classic rock stations. You know, "Iron Man," "Paranoid," "War Pigs," etc. Really only a small handful got a lot of radio play.

A few years ago I heard the comedian Jim Norton raging that Black Sabbath never got their due, and, apart from those three or four songs, are never played on rock radio. He was so absolutely enraged by this slight that I thought, "Man, I really have to listen to all of Paranoid> if someone is this infuriated that they're not getting the respect they're owed."

I never did. I'll work on that soon.

Here's an Ozzy Osbourne solo-album Yule Log.

Yeah, Birmingham was (and I believe, still is) pretty grim -- got the piss bombed out of it in WWII, then the communists (excuse me, "Labor") set off a UK-wide industrial decline. B'ham was a major factory town -- like the UK version of Detroit (which, of course, was destroyed by our own home-grown communists).

I remember that Ozzy had a sore throat that night, so he didn't sing long, but I will always remember his clapping, his smile, his mooning of us, and most important, what I call our "baptism," when he did his signature dunking of his head in a bucket of cold water and threw it on us, his loving audience. We'll always have his music, but the man will be missed.

There's a tremendous clip of him clowning Henry Rollins after Rollins said that he'd forgotten more about Sabbath than Jimmie could ever know.

Norton legit named off almost an entire tour's locations and happenings, and Rollins had no clue what was going on. Someone had to tell him that Norton was dunking all over him.

Then they discovered it allowed them have worldwide fame, never had to wait to get a table, that they could make a lot of money, avoid having to work a regular job, and all the girls they once thought impossible.. These are all penultimate reasons to be an artist, probably the only reasons that matter.

Where they ended up is creating modern classical music that has stood the test at time (some of this music is over 60 years old), has become favorites of multiple generations, and will continue to do so long into the future.

These bands literally changed the course of 1000 years of Western music permanently. That kind of amounts to something important and partially explains why you might be feeling a bit of a loss right now.

95 Yeah, Birmingham was (and I believe, still is) pretty grim -- got the piss bombed out of it in WWII, then the communists (excuse me, "Labor") set off a UK-wide industrial decline. 116 "Heavy metal" as a genre is completely lost on me. Robert B. Parker once had his detective Spenser tell us that most rock 'n' roll sounded to him like glass being ground (remember, Spenser was a young man during the Korean War, so he was born between 1930-35). Heavy metal is like that to me, except less pleasing.

That said, apparently Ozzy had a good deal of success (I won't say a "happy life") and leaves behind a family, so I'm sorry for their loss.

117 Alice absolutely was a degenerate drunk.

Yeah, he says that. And he doesn’t blame stardom either. It wasn’t Alice who was the degenerate drunk. It was Vince.

“Alice never did anything that was destructive to me. If you make a comparison of, say, Vince and Alice, and Dr. Frankenstein and the Monster, the Dr. Frankenstein character, my Vince thing, was doing all the destruction. Alice never drank on stage. When Alice was alive, the character for the hour and twenty-five minutes, an hour and a half, he never drank once, he never drank a drop. He didn’t have time. He was busy doing the show. He wasn’t the sinner at all. He was just doing what he did. The only time I didn’t drink during the day was when I played my character. So he was the one that was actually doing the right thing. The other character spent all the rest of the day, twenty-two and a half hours, blaming the Monster for everything.”—Alice Cooper, Snakes and Dead Babies

173 Their first album is unbelievable. Whoever recorded it did an amazing job. It's only 5 or 6 songs but most of them are like 3 songs in one, given they were replicating their solid year of touring bars. They basically freestyled it all. But you can hear early on, the talent. It's really unlike every thing else I've ever heard.

175 Someone in the previous thread asked why they don't give Adam Corolla a late show.

He would have been better at it than jimmy Kimmel, even thought they are buds and did the Man Show together. He'd be more of a Carson.

But he proudly has his "pirate ship" he built so he's un-cancel able, and answers to no one. I don't think his ego needs the ego boost from having a late night show. He's not as star effer-y as most comedians, who crave the pretty jock and cheerleaders to like them as more than a funny guy.

Absolutely, some of their best songs, IMO.

He wrote a solid portion of the output of Blackmore's Rainbow and he wrote a good portion of his work with Black Sabbath, but he went and did Dio, because he felt burned by the patriarchs of both outfits (Iommi, for BS)

Recently, I saw an interview with Viv Campbell talking about the first two records of Dio. (Of course, Dio screwed the guys working in that band to the same degree, when he was the patriarch--VC blames it on his wife.)

196 Ozzy is chaos bottled and branded.

He’s leather, crucifixes, eyeliner, and clinical mania. The man bit a bat, for Christ’s sake, onstage. That’s not performance art. That’s marketing alchemy. He doesn’t sing so much as warn you over a doom-laden riff.

And it works. Because Ozzy doesn’t pretend.
He is the thing your guidance counselor warned you about.

Elvis Costello, on the other hand, is razor-sharp restraint.
He’s what happens when an English major weaponizes rhythm and sarcasm.
He wears glasses like they’re armor, and sings like he’s settling scores with every ex who ever said he was "too clever." His voice isn’t powerful,it’s surgical. And that makes it more dangerous.

Where Ozzy burns cathedrals, Elvis redesigns the scaffolding.

Costello is a sniper in a tweed blazer.

Ozzy stumbles across the stage like a haunted marionette, while Costello barely moves, letting the venom ooze through his lyrics instead of his limbs.

But here's the punchline:
Both men, in their own twisted ways, are absolute perfectionists.

Don’t be fooled by the shambling prince of darkness, Ozzy's arrangements are meticulously crafted behind the curtain.

And Costello? He’s rewritten more songs than most people have thoughts.

Saw Elvis Costello at an open air amphitheater (Mud Island) in Memphis TN way back in the early 80's. Very solid show with a crack band behind him.

Best concert there though was John Fogerty's return to the stage there when Centerfield was released. Lot of celebs at that one.

Eddie Vedder is an egotistical jerk, not only on stage, but in person. He has way too much ego for someone with such a small vocal range. But yes, dear Mr. Vedder, you are so edgy. The absolute edgiest. Eyeroll here.

It annoys the fuck out of me that there were 5 great voices to come out of the grunge movement (Cornell, Staley, Vedder, Cobain and Weiland), and the only one to survive is the shittiest, least compelling of the lot.

As a side note, as a vocalist, Grohl really wasn't of the grunge era. For his contribution it was drums.

In the Texas town of San Antonio
Is a little church they call the Alamo
The story tellers say Ozzy Osborne stopped one day
All dressed up in women's lingerie

I don't know if the guy was drinking beer
Jack or beam it's not exactly clear
But when he whipped it out
The ghost of Travis gave a shout
Whose message all good Texans still can hear

Don't go there, don't go there
You really shouldn't go there
It's a source of Texas pride
Hell, John Wayne died inside

Don't go there, don't go there
You really shouldn't go there
You'll really piss us off if you go there

342 All good things come to and end. Even bad things. Even good and bad things. Burn in peace Ozzy.

344 Thank you Ozzy for much enjoyment thru your music which will many will hold dearly for many years. Ace please do listen to paranoid and get back to us. Many hard rock bands of this time did not receive air time. Fairies wear boots - my favorite on paranoid. RIP

345 Back in the day around '78 I called the radio station to play a tune from Paranoid... The jock laughed.

346 Conservative columnist and commentator Robert Novak was the original Prince of Darkness. Well, not THE original but, anyway, that's how others referred to him.

347 I strongly suspect Satan spends little of his time working through musicians, trying to influence stoner teenagers.

There's much richer territory to mine, when you just have the world's most powerful men fly to an island so they can have sex with children.

349 I attempted to see Ozzy at Monsters of Rock in Germany in 1985. Sadly, I passed out during him and Warlock. May be more, no one would tell me.

350 I'm late to this party but:

I was a big fan of Sabbath -- right up there with Zeppelin and Cream for me.

I was lucky enough to see them in concert; it was late in their careers, about 9 years ago, but they were still great. I was only 5 rows back, right in front of Tony Iommi. That, and my brief meeting with Pavel Datsyuk, were my two brushes with greatness in my life.
