Gun Thread: Late Middle July Edition!

072025 calendar scaled.jpg

Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

Holy Shitballs! How in the ever-loving Hell did it get to be late middle July? I've been working on some long neglected projects around the house before WW divorces me, including fixing the smashed back fence from the storm a couple months ago. Having said that, retirement is going so well I might need to hire an assistant!

With that, step into the dojo and let's get to the gun stuff below, shall we?

******

FUNdamentals

Please do not shoot like this. This is the opposite of good fundamentals. It is worse than no fundamentals at all, so for the love of all that is good, just don't shoot like this. Thank you.

Cigar of the Week

072025 Rhomboid Undercrown Maduro 1 scaled.jpg

This week our pal rhomboid scores again with this excellent review of the Drew Estate Liga Undercrown

Liga Undercrown is Drew Estate's more affordable (and available) line alongside the pricey and elusive Liga Privada. I reviewed the connecticut (Shade) version here recently. The maduro is of course much closer to its Privada cousins, and shares one leaf (the stalk-cut Connecticut habano oscuro, in this case used as binder). The wrapper is a handsome chocolate brown Mexican Otapan Negro leaf with lots of "tooth" - rustic texture and visible veins. Fillers are from Nicaragua, and mata fina from Brazil. The draw on this gran toro (6 X 52) was just how I like it, easy but not too easy. Burn line required some touch-ups along the way, and smoke was good. Very consistent flavor profile throughout - tobacco sweetness and a persistent if faint chocolate note. Medium bodied, smooth, and less earthy than most maduros I've tried. A very nice cigar you can find online for $8.

Most bigly excellent, rhomboid! Thank you!

******

Here are some different online cigar vendors. You will find they not only carry different brands and different lines from those brands, but also varying selections of vitolas (sizes/shapes) of given lines. It's good to have options, especially if you're looking for a specific cigar.

A note about sources. The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid

Anyone have others to include? Perhaps a small local roller who makes a cigar you like? Send me your recommendation and a link to the site!

11 Just a heads up. I've noticed that several vendors have been offering sale prices and/or free hazmat on powder and primers. And they have them in stock. Natchez and Midsouth come to mind. Even the sale prices make me wince but they are better than a couple of years ago.

14 No real range time but I did get a Strikeman trainer. Anybody have one? Thought it might be fun to plink at during zoom meetings and such. My first impressions are... whelming, at best. First off, the laser module uses rubber o-rings to center in the chamber so it's not guaranteed concentric. Hits to POI varies with orientation. Second, unless I'm missing something, it appears that without upgrading ($$!) the only mode is simple shot string recording, no timing, no splits. Third, according to the instructions, the phone should be within 10 ft of the target. That's not too convenient if you want to be further.

17 Good evening Weasel and everyone else...thankfully, I finally have a range report. It's been too long since I've been to the range, they have RSOs I don't recognize! Anyway, started as one might expect when routine practice has been interrupted...but focusing on stance, my non-dominant arm, and the iron sights and it didn't take long before there were holes in the 3 in circle. And I was excited that those holes were consistent each round, and even when I started firing faster (usually that's when it all falls apart). So, a very valuable trip and I'm looking forward to the next trip

22 Range report, final load development edition. Hit the range to test some reloaded once fired brass against new brass. I had some suspicions the new brass was running just a bit cooler than the previously fired brass. I loaded up new brass 2 tenths of a grain more powder than once fired. And wound up with identical muzzle velocities. The ridiculous part? I was running well under 10 fps extreme spread on all of the brass. The reloads demonstrated excellent accuracy which meant I was set for the 1,000 yards match the following day. Even hit the thousand yard range and confirmed I could hit the 14x17 steel @ 1029 yards. This was for 30.06, by the way.

Yeah. The engineering involved is amazing. I'm sure it's an iterative design evolution. Still. though, I sort of like the idea of seeing a propeller shaft shot through the bow of a ship because someone forgot about Newton's Third Law.

30 Action rifle match this morning. Once again only shooter with no plastic or optics (M1 carbine).

Match director told me weeks back this would be mostly short range, so carbine would work. Longest shot was 100 yds. But with a 30-second par time - though main problem for me was seeing the plates, as they were painted green, in shadow.

Did OK except didn’t remember to just point shoot (look over the front sight, spot impact and adjust) until a few stages in.

As always lots of love and interest in the rifle, especially from the youngin’s.

37 Diogenes, know what you mean. I’m working on a review of cheaper bundle cigars that I will finish some day. Right now burning one of my faves in that category, Artisan Tabak barber pole (an Atlantic Cigar exclusive I think). Perfect summer day. Really should wash the car after, east county ranges are very dusty. Then need to do full disassemble/clean on both carbines, and give the stock on the Auto Ordnance repro its annual BLO treatment (nice walnut, has darkened to a beautiful rich color).

Posted by: rhomboid at July 20, 2025 07:40 PM (ollJN)

38 and now for the dismal range report for the 1,000 yard match. Day started off well, light breeze, fairly consistent and I though, "great, light 4 to 6 mph breeze, match should go well."

Sigh, I should have learned better by now. I wound up in the third flight after the draw.

1st sighter, no hit on target. I'm looking at things, trying to figure out what went wrong, then realized I'd dropped the round about 800 yards short. I forgot my zero stop is set up so I can dial it down a bit, if necessary. And the spot it was sitting on had me thinking I'd not rolled it back to zero after the previous day. Obviously, I wasn't smart though to double check.

I got on paper, and that was about as good as it got. The erstwhile breeze turned into wind gusts up to 15mph. On the upside, I did catch things a couple of times when things dropped off considerably. But, I didn't trust my instincts on the last shot and was way over corrected for non existent wind. I'd forgotten to compare the near flag to the far. Still though, no misses even though I ended up with a pathetic 75.

43 This is the second week in a row that Weasel has not made a near-histrionic outburst about focusing on fundamentals *every* time you practice.

Call me a conspiracy theorist, if you will, but I have a theory as to why this is so.

Let us connect two recent events. Weasel's retirement, and the very-recently concluded semi-annual AoSHQ Commentator Reviews by Ace and the CoBs, which are recorded in your Permanent Records.

My theory is that a number of you, a very large number of you, have not been, in fact, focusing on fundamentals. This, of course, has had Weasel extremely busy notating this in your Permanent Records, and Ace, when he observed the exponential growth in your Permanent Records caused by the notations, and he correlated this with the large and unexplained (in his mind) increase in record storage costs, unloaded on Weasel in a Krakatoaian fashion, making his previously epic 0700 hrs EST rants to Weasel about the Food Thread having more comments than the Gun Thread look like squib loads.

Weasel, given his gravitas, resolved not to trigger this again, and he has dropped, except perhaps for mild reproofs now and then, his exhortations on fundamentals.d

One of the reasons I always liked doing calculations by hand is I could sense when a calculation had gone to shit. We have gotten to a point where information and chain of logic and reasoning has gotten to attenuated that... would a lot of kids realize when an 'AI' 'hallucinates' and tells them flat out bullshit?

Would anyone trust an ai for life and death calculations or design without double and triple checking?

61 Went to the Chantilly show this weekend. As usual in the middle of the summer, attendance was light. A fair number of vendors weren't there either, probably taking a vacation themselves. The tariffs on imported firearms were noticeable; about 10% based on what I saw. That said, there were still interesting items to be found if you went looking for them. I had a .45 LC Colt Anaconda from the late 1990s follow me home this weekend.

77 On the "gangsta grip"....

First, I do not think the intent is to grab "the package." I think the intent is to grab the pants to keep them up while shooting. It so happens that most "gangstas" wear their pants such the waistband is somewhere around their crotch. Again, it helps if you understand the fundamentals.

Second, the problem with the "gangsta grip" is more fundamental than mere sight relationship to the eye. It seems to be an attitude that merely flinging lead at your opponent is enough to prove your bad-a**ery and to intimidate said opponent. This is also why they love full-auto fire. If he dies it was your bad-a**ery that did him in.

(BTW, the "raisin' your gangsta gun up high" is intended to fix one of the issues Miculek noted - the lack of vision. It moves the gun and arm entirely out of your sight and now you can adequately see the target to inflict your bad-a**ery on them.)

Lost tech examples:
- Manufacturing hardened armor plate at scale.
- Heavy naval artillery (8" and up).
- Turret mechanisms for heavy guns.
- Floating dry docks large enough for modern surface ships and subs.
- Domestic AFFF (fire fighting foam) manufacturing capacity.

These are some of the reasons why bringing back the Iowa class BB's for another "last hurrah" is completely impractical.

83 Contra the laughing at the the "gangsta grip", though, is one fundamental:

If you have mastered the point in your shooting, you can shoot well (for certain values of 'well') from several positions of the gun. Humans naturally point accurately. If you get your grip aligned with your natural point, you can defensively shoot from the hip, from the chest, etc. No, it's not as accurate as with a nice stance, a two-handed grip, good lighting, a well-zeroed gun, etc. But, the better your point is, the more accurate you will be all the time.

Forgot what a pita Win XP and Windows 2000 was. The Win 98 machine has boot issues due to a failing hd so on the plate to fix this week to download and decommission it.

I am mildly impressed that none of the rest of them have swelling capacitors, bad hardware, etc. The Windows 2000 machine will get the Zip drive donated to from the Win 98 system.

If you do have a very old system, Startech makes an IDE to Sata card along with the appropriate power stepdowns for replacing old IDE drives with SATA ssds. You do have to remember the whole master and slave setup.

All this so I can get back to my reloading bench and organize it after a major basement remodel last year. Bench itself is now clear, components are sorted, and ancillary items like spare holsters, magazines, etc. are now put in their own drawers and organized. Gun parts next along with oil/cleaning supplies.

It would be nice if we could bring them back but certain skills and supplies are no longer available. I do not think there is any propellant available for the big 16" guns. How many shells are left?
Training a crew to man all the stations that are needed. The last Iowa BB was decommissioned in 1992. That is 33 years.
Also, the expense to bring them out of mothballs (though all of them are now museums) and then upgrade the systems are prohibitively expensive.

132 >> I'd argue that a lot of these retards are thinking drones trump everything

I encourage you to go watch some of the Uke drone footage, if you haven’t. Drones are only one battlefield element. But they have a serious impact on kinetic operations. Watch as the drone chases a BMP and wipes it out. Or better yet, infantry that’s dug in running from the drone as they try to take it out with aimed shots. It certainly doesn’t replace artillery or something like a javelin or CG. But it’s a very cheap weapon to produce and things like drone swarms overwhelm most modern day air defense systems. In Nagorno Karabakh they were taking out entire lines of tanks with drones. It will (and is) going through the usual counter defense cycle. But it’s here to stay.

Posted by: Ed L at July 20, 2025 08:53 PM (BCwQW)

139 I was referring to skills/experience for *current* shipbuilding tasks, actually. Sadly yes those for the things EdL mentioned are long gone, but then too are most of the demands for them.

Iowa class - was lucky to spend most of a day on the lead ship of the class in Norfolk when she was active, congressional staff thing. Had lunch with the CO, and at some point I asked something along the lines of "how many of the current Soviet anti-ship missiles is it estimated this class could take?". As I recall he said a consultant had done their own analysis and tossed it in as an annex to one of their deliverables. Around 100. Now of course that would clean everything outside the armored areas off, and probably render the ship far less capable, but still.

I think the Iowa was the only one of her class to get hit by enemy artillery. One of the turrets. They didn't notice until morning - splintered teak deck, and a very slight scar (basically a paint layer or two) off the turret. Built tough.

Have been wondering what they did with the ammo. Used to be a pile of it, stored as I recall at Dahlgren.

168 I find myself reflecting a lot more lately on just how fragile modern civilization really is.
Posted by: RedMindBlueState at July 20, 2025 07:37 PM (Wnv9h)

Lots of preppers think they can keep things going by stockpiling what I would call mid-level resources. Because they're still thinking (maybe not consciously) in terms of "Tires come from the tire manufacturer" instead of "Tires come from these various resources that all have to be collected, shipped, manufactured, etc." It's "I, Pencil" writ large. (Another one is chlorine. Everyone stocks up on chlorine to purify their water. What happens when you run out? Do you have any idea how to get/make more?)

A great book to help with grasping this and getting a leg up on "re-building civilization" is How to Rebuild Civilization in the Aftermath of a Cataclysm by Lewis Dartnell. I think he misses a few things, but to even get you started thinking the right way is pretty important.

The chalk practice/training rounds are the only commonly available ammo around for GL's. There are other rounds (crowd control, CS, smoke, baton, etc.), but when you start getting into the $100+ per round range, you're not getting these unless you have a government agency's budget to work with.

Thank you for a much less "Revolution in Military Affairs!" take on it. Even the described container in the water with drones is basically a ... mine. A fancy one, with lots of moving parts (always an issue in warfare), but still, in the end, a mine. And, though different technology or techniques might be involved, still countered in the same way: detection, avoidance, or blowing it up while at safe distance.

195 The chalk practice/training rounds are the only commonly available ammo around for GL's. There are other rounds (crowd control, CS, smoke, baton, etc.), but when you start getting into the $100+ per round range, you're not getting these unless you have a government agency's budget to work with.

200 Well Wal-Mart is really trying to get themselves into hot water.

Had to recently re-certify to sell firearms.

First, the iffy one. Now we are to report up channel as much information on a buyer as possible if it is a suspected straw purchase. This was not in the courseware last year.

Second issue could be a real humdinger. We are supposed to deny a sale if the prospective buyer has intolerant views.

Of course, neither one of these are in the test I was administered.

How do we know that this wasn't done in a previous age?

The antediluvian people had lifespans nearing a thousand years. Think what technology you are using now and compare that to 400 years ago. Now imagine having 700 or 800 years of Einstein, Tesla, Edison, Newton, Franklin et al at work doing things. Give them 10 times the years to invent and imagine what we would have.

Where would you store all of that accumulated knowledge and on what medium?

They're just plastict casings that burst on impact. Actually kind of had to see where they hit and very not satisfying with no KABOOM. I had the honor of carrying that heavy ass fukin' 203 for a while in W. Germany in the 90's. Qualified with it 3 times. Fun to play with indirect fire so close to you. High angle shots into bunkers and window shots. Fun stuff.

232 Late to guns but, some quick thoughts.

I did some shooting yesterday with my G30 and my G26. And I ended up with some serious Glock Knuckle. I am very used to Glocks, but starting out with 50 rounds of speedy .45 JHP it felt like every round went directly into my right hand middle finger.

Not fun.

The G26 felt so mild in comparison but it still fits my hand so that the Glock Knuckle was amplified.

Gonna try my PSA Micro Dagger next week as it fits my hand differently.

Add it to the weight of the M-16a2 it was attached to then multiply by distance of road march plus ammo pack...

Yeah. The fucking thing was heavy. Carrying 10 lbs (M203) vs. 6.5 lbs (M16a2) for hours and hours while trudging though mud in Graf. 3 pounds? Idiot. It's an attachment to the rifle. The single shot shoulder fired version is not a 203.

Was a 12B (combat engineer). Squad was old school breaching. We had four M249 gunners with 600 rounds for base load, the two fire team leaders had the 203s. Newbies got the satchel charges.
