Home Depot Co-Founder: I Opposed Trump's Tariffs, Now That I See That They're Working -- and Are "Needed" and "Right"

He also says that Trump will likely go down as one of the "best presidents ever."

I mean, it's too early to say that. His next three years could be a disaster, and his last week is pretty iffy.

But going by what he did in his first term and the first half-year of his second term? He definitely could wind up being the best president in modern history, if he gets over his current habit of shooting himself in the foot and if some risky bets he's made pay off.

Home Depot co-founder Ken Langone, once a sharp critic of President Trump's tariff policies, now says he's fully "sold" on the president's economic instincts. Langone said Trump could go down as one of the "best presidents ever."

Key Details:

Langone previously called Trump's tariffs "bulls***" but now praises them as "needed" and "right."

He cited unfair trade imbalances, particularly with Germany and Japan, as validation for Trump's tough stance.

The shift comes after Trump's economic record and a near-death experience in Butler, PA shifted Langone's view.

Diving Deeper:

Ken Langone, billionaire co-founder of Home Depot and longtime GOP donor, made waves Tuesday when he publicly reversed his opposition to Donald Trump's trade policies. "I am sold on Trump," Langone told CNBC's Squawk Box, just ahead of new inflation data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. "In fact, I'll say this: I think he's got a good shot at going down in history as one of our best presidents ever."

Langone's endorsement carries weight, not only because of his business stature, but because of his history: he previously backed Nikki Haley in the Republican primaries and expressed deep frustration with Trump after the January 6 Capitol protests. But his views appear to have shifted dramatically--both in response to Trump's recent economic moves and, perhaps more significantly, following the July 13 assassination attempt at Trump's Pennsylvania rally.

"Knowledge implies one thing: When you made a mistake, admit it," Langone said, acknowledging his earlier dismissal of Trump's tariff strategy. "I think this guy is turning out to be a president, right?"

Trump's "reciprocal tariffs" were designed to push back against long-standing trade imbalances. Langone cited the 10% tariff Germany slaps on American cars, compared to just 2.5% for German vehicles imported to the U.S. "That's wrong," Langone said. "Every other car in America is a Mercedes... most of them are foreign."

He also credited Trump's foreign policy accomplishments, including economic agreements in the Middle East he claims are worth "$3 trillion." That, combined with the president's gut instincts on trade, defense, and economic strength, has convinced Langone the country is better off with Trump in the Oval Office.

"This is a real turnaround because you didn't want to vote for him," co-host Joe Kernan pointed out. "I want to tell you, I'm a believer," Langone replied. "What I'm seeing happening is absolutely nothing short of a great thing."

Below, the video, plus: Scott Jennings vs. CNN's Lack of Brain Trust on the price of eggs.

Let's talk about the price of eggs, which Democrats want to do again.

Why? Because they are saying that year-over-year egg prices are slightly up now from where they were in July 2024.

Slightly.

But why would they compare the price of eggs in July 2025 to July 2024?

Wouldn't the more relevant period of comparison be from the price from Biden's last days in the White House, January 20, 2025, to now?

Well, yes. The problem is, Trump has dramatically lowered the price of eggs from January 2024. So they don't want to talk about January 2024 compered to now.

They insist on cherry-picking the last good month for Biden until now:

eggpricesoneyear.jpg

Scott Jennings wasn't having this bullshit -- but dum-dum DEI hire Abby Phillips insisted that she didn't want to have an argument over statistics, right before insisting that the left's argument about statistics is accurate and the only right way to view the numbers.

Or am I thinking of a different metaphor?

Curious how the price of eggs in July 2025 is about on par with September 2024.

Then the price skyrockets over the next few months for some strange reason.

25 My older brother Jonathan is the manager for the bar and kitchen at a theater pub. He would come home and tell me the prices of eggs and how it was damaging his business because they are used in so much stuff. He could not understand how breakfast places could possibly stay open, nobody wants to pay 18 bucks for an omelet.

Eggs were the face of food inflation, not the only problem, but they were easy to use as the example because of how ubiquitous they are in American cuisine.

Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at July 16, 2025 03:45 PM (dfIr7)

26 Ken Langone also makes the point in the video that people overall seem happier under Trump -- more "bounce in their steps," as he puts it -- and I think he's right. Certainly everyone right of center-left is happier. And I suspect even some lefties are happier too, although they'd never admit it.

And what's not to be happy about? Economy is better, prices are down, income is up, markets are rocking, inflation is tamed, Iran is defanged, some semblance of sanity has taken over the USA's position on Ukraine, hot single girls are strutting around, and the leftwing commies are kicking themselves in the scrotum.

Life is good.

>>> Do NOT be deceived by the Sarah McBrides. They're the highly practiced soft-spoken, velvet-gloved persuaders of the extremists. I saw the interview, too, and in every word I detected regret over the failures and a determination to figure out why they failed and to retry in a different way. If Dems had won in 2024 (shudder), they -- including Sarah McBride -- wouldn't be looking at their extremism and wondering if they were going too far.

I almost was! If I'd only listened to the first half, I might have. Because as someone purged by my own trans sibling for only accepting 90% of the trans movement, my soul needed to hear from a trans person that that behavior wasn't ok. That I'm not evil. It was a balm that I needed.

But I appreciate that the interview was long form, and she gets comfortable in the second half and lets her guard down on what she REALLY thinks about us. It's clear she's quite radical, and if the dems get back in power, and we all get tossed into Alligator Alcatraz for reeducation, she will happily hold open the door to shove me inside the camp.

Very old school. Very dangerous.

97 Trump's tariffs are reshaping the world trade.

Canada's PM, just announced tariff's on foreign steel, including anything that passes through China. They are also putting quotas on foreign steel to bolster the Canadian steel companies. Additionally, the government has been working on eliminating barriers between provinces.

One other reason I like the tariffs is that all of these socialist countries like Canada have free health care. How is that not a HUGE subsidy for those foreign companies?

President Trump is just leveling the playing field. America first! Holy crap!

108 Once again, the tariffs aren't the solution. They work exactly opposite to how you think since they are a tax on you and me. Our problem is way too much government meddling in the marketplace with rules, laws, minimum wages, etc, etc and inflation. Get rid of that and there are no problems. None. Then no one will care what other countries "charge" in tariffs.

Also, no competent economist said tariffs cause inflation. Some have said to expect higher prices (because that is literally how they work). Tariffs have no effect on the money supply but raise prices through taxes and increasing scarcity (known contributors to "supply chain issues").

I don't see how that's possible. I just looked at the US inflation calculator to make sure I wasn't losing my mind -- no categories of food have been deflationary, and meat is up 5% YoY.

The rate of increase has slowed dramatically since Biden left office, but prices are still increasing.

Some things, like eggs, were artificially spiked by culling a shitton of chickens due to fears of avian flu, and I'm sure some individual items may have gotten cheaper, but I don't see how your grocery bill is 1/4 of what it was a year ago.

Mine has remained more or less the same (other than eggs, which I don't buy at grocery stores anyways)

One could raise a legitimate concern regarding the business ethics of Volkswagen, based on them having gamed the emissions' hardware on their vehicles to meet emissions' reduction rules.

Full disclosure -- among the last projects on which I worked while at DuPont was one to develop an emissions' gasses' sensor for diesel-powered vehicles. We worked with another German company, and ultimately, our device could not accomplish the task, but VW doubtlessly would have been among its customers had it actually worked.

They're mostly marketing terms.

But have you ever bought an egg from a farmer with a small flock of heritage breeds of chickens who are raised on a mix of chicken feed and foraging in a field? They taste delicious and much different than the White Leghorn's eggs you get for like $2 at Walmart.

Obviously Nelly's and other big brands aren't using White Leghorns for their eggs, but I also doubt their chickens are free ranging, ya know? But it's somewhere in between.

The traditional factory farmed eggs also come from chickens raised in gigantic overcrowded warehouses under artificial lights to keep the chickens in maximum egg production mode year 'round, and if you watch a video of how those operations work, well... it's a pretty cruel way to treat animals.

I'll put that in the column of will never happen and has never happened. Part of the issue is that business critters themselves are a mixed lot and it is alway advantageous to try to put the other guy out of business fairly or unfairly.

So with no minimum wage, the obvious answer is import cheap illegals to do what your competitor down the street doesn't. With the idea of government meddling, why not enshitify your product for the most gain for the least cost. Let your consumers worry about whether Red Dye No 5 causes cancer or not--you will be retired abroad by the time that happens. Why not sell under the table to the Chicoms key defense information.

Living at the end of the supply chain, I can attest to not only paying much more for groceries, having some items simply not available. It is the price for living up here, and well worth the hassle, but it is also why I grow vegetables and berries, harvest salmon, would shoot a moose if one wandered into the yard, etc. Can't rely on the supply chain and can't afford the prices.

Hopefully all that will stop under Trump. So far, so good. But I haven't seen much of a decrease yet.

Passat needs head cylinder head replaced. Had it for a year, bought it at 110k miles. Repair is worth more than the car.
Posted by: Chuck Martel

We had one declared stone cold totaled after just three years' use because the drain plugged for the well in which its battery sat, the well filled with rain water during a tremendous downpour, and water was aspirated from there into the engine and it buggered up one of the cylinders. A whole new engine would have been necessary.

We argued with VW that the fault for the failure was theirs due to design flaws. VW replied, "Nein!", so we got our revenge by coming out strongly against buying a Passat (or any VW) when we were asked about the brand after that. Stopped a few buys from happening.

just some thoughts...

Oliver Stone's original screenplay for Conan set it in the post-apocalyptic future. John Millius got rid of that nonsense.

Red Sonia is the original Howard character and I believe she's Polish from the real-world earth. Howard did a lot of historic adventure stories early on. (He invented the Hyborian Age because it took him too long to do the research to get the historic stories right, so he invented a fictitious dark age/medieval world in the ancient past where he could make up whatever details he wanted.)

Roy Thomas then turned Red Sonia into Red Sonja and put her into Conan's Hyborian age.

232 Hate to tell you but unhappy chicken (same with pork or beef) do not produce eggs nor put on weight for meat.

One can never anthropomorphize animals as to what is ideal for them. In reality, animals are violent, harsh, and cruel just as humans are. Chickens, like their lizard dinosaur ancestors, are quite happily cannibals if the opportunity arises. Pecking order is quite violent. That wholesome bugs, worms, etc. diet for free range chickens include eating theirs and other's shit for fun. Thus, more medications are necessary when you raise them en masse plus the wandering wild birds around to spread diseases like bird flu to the flocks--thus you gotta vaxx them.

I can go on about pigs, cattle, and other livestock and even rowcrop/truck farming realities but it would end up spoiling most people's appetites.

Most people have little to no contact with actual farming anymore but instead watch documentaries instead of dry actual report or talk with actual farmers about the why of farming. Me, I grew up around it.

TJ's has a bad habit of discontinuing some of their better items and keeping the crap. Two examples are the mayo in the large glass jar with the yellow label. Best mayo you could buy, replaced with a more processed mayo in a 2/3 sized jar. Luckily, Vons here in CA started carrying Duke's lately.

Second is the hand-made looking flour tortillas. Almost as good as the ones that I make from scratch. Replaced by "Sonoran" machine-made tortillas that have a funky chemical aftertaste.

Most healthy people never realize they have a mild case of salmonella poisoning but it can be deadly to the immune compromised, elderly, or children.

And it can include infection inside the egg itself which is why eating raw eggs nor products using raw eggs is not necessarily a good practice. Infected hens can lay infected eggs.

Cooking them properly removes the chance for infection. If you are really worried, pasteurized eggs or liquid egg products exist and those are commonly used in restaurants due to convenience and mess. Dried and powder eggs are nasty by themselves but can serve as ingredients requiring eggs.

A lot depends on where and how it was raised. Farm fresh eggs are often not inspected by food inspectors before sale as most exempt small producers until something happens.

So you pick your chances and roll the dice but most people lack the knowledge to figure out what the Prior is in a Bayesian equation of probability.

I think the exemption for slaughtering chickens on a farm (not having to go the FDA inspection route) is a flock of 400 or something.

I'm not sure if the rules are the same for laying hens and their eggs.

The brand is in the process of being dismembered because current nepo baby in charge Akio Toyoda considers it a grave insult to his honor that Americans won't buy nice cars with his name on them. I would never own a German car but If I were to buy one it would either be a G-Wagon or the Mercedes Benz Station Wagon.

There are no other German cars that would peak my interest.

VW almost had me when they announced they were bringing back the VW Bus only for it to be an all EV vehicle with a silly design aesthetic.

I like the older more boxy body design Merc had in the late 80's and 90's. If I had go to hell money to buy a weekend car, i wouldn't mind getting an old 560 SEC; big old boxy coupe with a v8. And if we're funding this with fantasy money, maybe modernize that engine into something a bit more tire melty.
