Mid-Morning Art Thread

Still Life (Vanitas)
N.L. Peschier

Still Lifes are sort of a generic topic that I assume were used by artists to hone their skills. This one is technically pleasing, and the addition of the music sheets is interesting, as is the smoldering...something...off to the left.

Of course the message is clear. Momento Mori; a reminder that death is always near. But I wonder whether most artists were less interested in the rote message and more interested in painting fun things like skulls!

19 A highly detailed painting. The music sheets alone mus have taken hours, along with the cards (or whatever they are) with the B & W images on the far right. The blue velvet wrap has real texture, as do the sheaves of wheat on the lower right.

73 I love still life paintings, especially from Dutch Golden Age artists. Peschier may not care about the adage but this is an example of real talent. The realistic detail captures the viewer's attention and won't let it go. The stained skull, everyone's final end, contrasts with the jewel-like sheen of the fabric and gold coins. The hourglasses in the shadows are not prominent but can't be ignored. I especially like the wood grain on the violin and the detail of the sheet music. For all the moral warnings in the scene it doesn't feel morbid to me. The violin, the sheen of the fabric, the writings and tools are points of creativity, possibly beauty. They may be momentary but they aren't signs of a wasted life.

My impression is that it’s meant to show they were well used.

As in marching out in the rain, used by a working musician.

It’s a rather dark piece in the photograph, though.
I bet you can see the details more clearly in person.

Is Rodin’s Thinker an installation? I think his Petite Danseuse at the Louvre might be, since it has a small dress that must be placed on the figure.
