The amount of government regulation controlling financial research and investment advice is mind-boggling. AI is going to seem great, until some company runs afoul of those regulations because of AI and gets fined a few billion dollars. And then all of those senior supervisory analysts who got fired will be able to write their own tickets. The AI data center building frenzy is mind boggling. I don't quite understand how to characterize this. It smacks of a a gold rush, something similar to building railroads in the 19th century, the nuclear weapon arms race in the 20th century, or possibly all at the same time.
What isn't clear either is if the people making these massive bets are visionaries of a brave new world yet to appear or are creating a future digital rust belt of over capacity that will go on for decades. Much of this seems informed or influenced by how the world has been utterly changed since 1980 by computers and software. Not to mention the incredible wealth all that created. If this AI stuff catches on even at 50% of what the hype indicates the amount of wealth created will be staggering. Or it all could just blow up into nothing which seems completely unlikely. One side effect of all this is the phony Marxist green energy crap is good as buried in the ground. 20 ft deep. The power demands of this onslaught of development is a limiting factor it seems. The scale at which power generation will need to ramp up is unprecedented. Failure here is not an option and that means no green energy. Catchy! Posted by: m at July 16, 2025 04:57 AM (aURVT) It must be because I'm an old grouchy bastard - I don't find the song attractive at all. As well, the lead singer sounds like Dolores O'Riordan, which is an instant turn-off for me. Morning, 'rons and 'ronettes. 71 degrees and the sun just coming up over Stately Poppins Manor. Another scorcher today, with high humidity and around 92 degrees. Rain tomorrow, but no real relief until Friday, when temperatures are supposed to drop back down to the 70s. Back to work. Beethoven's final four sonatas are some of the greatest piano works ever created. What is remarkable is they were all composed when he was mostly deaf to completely deaf. In a real sense, they are less music and more of a very esoteric form of philosophy.
His last piano work, Op.126 Six Bagetelles, are of a much lighter nature but no less satisfying. They hearken back to a pure classical music of clarity and great melodic insight informed with that esoteric philosophy behind them. They are poetic perfection. https://youtu.be/-zHJQPmDal0 Posted by: Alteria Pilgram - My President has convictions. at July 16, 2025 05:25 AM (NXz8h) 21

Eli Mercer is a up-and-coming indie singer-songwriter. And he's completely AI. Rick Beato does a bang up demonstration of how to create an an the musician and the music using AI. The implications here for art in general are huge. We're on the cusp of a time when there will be a ubiquity of masterpieces, all of which are AI generated. The question is what does that do to the human artist. Does it bury them or does it make them more valuable? For now AI imitates what's gone before. Humans have the unique ability to create what has not yet been done. The rub is if AI reaches a point where it can infer a future not yet realized.

So just from the time and labor perspective, AI is revolutionary. Posted by: Thomas Bender at July 16, 2025 06:25 AM (XV/Pl) That doesn't require a 6GW data center. Now, here's the problem... the stuff that AI gives back for coding prompts which aren't "custom icons and sound effects" are crap. It's crap because most of the code snippets on the internet are crap but AI doesn't know that. It can work, sort of, for now but it's a timebomb waiting to fail. You know who doesn't know that? Inexperienced programmers and pretty much all managers. So they decide to save some money by firing most of the tired, old, white guys who understand the code in favor of some diverse folks from far away who they pay less to slam AI dreck into codebases. Which would have been self-correcting, back in the day of stand-alone applications. But we're not in those days anymore. Still... saves some time. across the world, Meta is building a number of gigantic datacenters of its own. One of those will reportedly be as large as a sizeable portion of Manhattan.
In the entire article, I couldn't find a single sentence that indicated where any of these data centers are being constructed. All we get is "across the world". I guess that leaves open Mars for Musk. They talk about Ai being trained off of AI generated articles. This article is near 100% eyewash and nothing actionable or knowledge building. I work for BigCorp and I spend my days cleaning up the fallout from people with no understanding putting AI generated code into place.
I feel your pain. I was an early adopter of AI for code writing augmentation. A year or two ago, AI was genuinely useful, now it isn't. The code quality is dropping quickly because so much "bad code" is now part of its training pool. I have two different AI engines available. I don't even like the quality of its comments or ability to generalize a PR summary. Its no longer any good at building changesets or recognizing typos. And I don't know a true developer who enjoys or can withstand doing PRs on other people's code, let alone that of AI. Meta's massive data centers are going to be built in Ohio in Louisiana. Notably, they're not being built in California. The wealth transfer from the blue states to the red States is going to be massive. This type of infrastructure will attract other infrastructure, inspire universities to actually teach people something, and generally lift up the entire economy. I grew up in the Bellevue Redmond area. The impact Microsoft had is staggering. Something similar will occur at these other locations. To what degree is yet to be seen. Nobody in 1980 first saw what Microsoft would do to the region.

I can sleep fully through the night now, I don't take my work home with me (other than completing some small paperwork from the day, which is nothing really), and my stress levels are way down from where they were. I like reading for pleasure again (I'd lost the love of that for a time due to all the emails and documentation I had to pour through) and my outlook on life is a ton more positive. Getting out and staying out is possible. If that's what you want, I hope you get to a good place. Posted by: Grumpy and Recalcitrant at July 16, 2025 07:30 AM (O7YUW) 158
148 For some reason Shawn Ryan had Gavin Newsom on his podcast. He claimed he was for open discourse from all sides. I responded that Gavin Newsom is a psychopath and you don't give psychopaths a platform to path their psychos.

If the tramadol is giving you enough relief that you are comfortable and move about and sleep, I would forgo the hydrocodone.
It's an opiate/opioid and all the negatives associate with them applies. Posted by: pawn at July 16, 2025 *** The Tramadol is an opioid too, just a weaker one. I'm more comfortable than I was yesterday, but not even 75% yet, and I'm not sleeping as much as I should. As I said, I may not need to take this new stuff for more than a couple of doses. We are going to find out that these huge, brute-force computer centers for training AI is not the way to go. Some smart guy will come up with efficient training techniques (maybe even AI will come up with the idea), and these huge data centers will become pink elephants.
