Message in a bottle bathroom

Woman Finds Message on Toilet Paper Roll Written 35 Years Ago by Little Girl

doof-toilet-roll-left-by-girl-35-years-ago.jpg

A couple renovating their new home discovered hidden inside their loft a heartwarming message written by a little girl 35 years ago—on the side of an empty toilet paper roll.

Charlotte England-Black found the touching note, which was concealed in the attic of their property in Nottingham, England, in 1989 when the little girl was moving out.

The 30-year-old moved into the house with her husband five months ago, but only found the hidden time capsule last Friday.

The note was penned by Emma—who was seven years old at the time—as a secret message for the home’s future owners.

Charlotte immediately wondered where Emma was now—so she reached out on a Facebook community page in a bid to track her down. Amazingly, she was found within the hour.

Hidden time capsule? More like a time crap-sule, amirite??

Tool Time

Fun stuff from a site called Shopsmith Forums

Useful tools definitions

DRILL PRESS: A tall upright machine useful for suddenly snatching flat metal bar stock out of your hands so that it smacks you in the chest and flings your beer across the room, denting the freshly-painted project which you had carefully set in the corner where nothing could get to it.

WIRE WHEEL: Cleans paint off bolts and then throws them somewhere under the workbench with the speed of light. Also removes fingerprints and hard-earned calluses from fingers in about the time it takes you to say, 'Oh sh --'

SKILL SAW: A portable cutting tool used to make studs too short.

PLIERS: Used to round off bolt heads. Sometimes used in the creation of blood-blisters.

BELT SANDER: An electric sanding tool commonly used to convert minor touch-up jobs into major refinishing jobs.

HACKSAW: One of a family of cutting tools built on the Ouija board principle. It transforms human energy into a crooked, unpredictable motion, and the more you attempt to influence its course, the more dismal your future becomes.

VISE-GRIPS: Generally used after pliers to completely round off bolt heads. If nothing else is available, they can also be used to transfer intense welding heat to the palm of your hand.

OXYACETYLENE TORCH: Used almost entirely for lighting various flammable objects in your shop on fire. Also handy for igniting the grease inside the wheel hub out of which you want to remove a bearing race.

TABLE SAW: A large stationary power tool commonly used to launch wood projectiles for testing wall integrity.

HYDRAULIC FLOOR JACK: Used for lowering an automobile to the ground after you have installed your new brake shoes, trapping the jack handle firmly under the bumper.

BAND SAW: A large stationary power saw primarily used by most shops to cut good aluminum sheet into smaller pieces that more easily fit into the trash can after you cut on the inside of the line instead of the outside edge.

TWO-TON ENGINE HOIST: A tool for testing the maximum tensile strength of everything you forgot to disconnect.

PHILLIPS SCREWDRIVER: Normally used to stab the vacuum seals under lids or for opening old-style paper-and-tin oil cans and splashing oil on your shirt; but can also be used, as the name implies, to strip out phillips screw heads.

STRAIGHT SCREWDRIVER: A tool for opening paint cans.. Sometimes used to convert common slotted screws into non-removable screws and butchering your palms.

PRY BAR: A tool used to crumple the metal surrounding that clip or bracket you needed to remove in order to replace a 50 cent part.

HOSE CUTTER: A tool used to make hoses too short.

HAMMER: Originally employed as a weapon of war, the hammer nowadays is used as a kind of divining rod to locate the most expensive parts adjacent the object we are trying to hit.

UTILITY KNIFE: Used to open and slice through the contents of cardboard cartons delivered to your front door; works particularly well on contents such as seats, vinyl records, liquids in plastic bottles, collector magazines, refund checks, and rubber or plastic parts. Especially useful for slicing work clothes, but only while wearing said clothes.

**SOB TOOL: Any handy tool that you grab and throw across the garage while yelling 'Son of a b----' at the top of your lungs. It is also, most often, the next tool that you will need.*

Check out the link. Some great entries.

It's that time of the week - when we turn the ONT over to our good friend Piper for a bit. Here's this week's fashion pr0n.

------
From Heartache to Hope

This week brought heavy news with the loss of friends, family and devastating events in the Texas Hill Country. The heartbreaking images of children who lost their lives cast a somber mood. Only faith can provide strength through such profound grief. President Trump and First Lady Melania visited the affected area, visibly moved by the tragedy.

Melania’s attire during the visit was appropriately subdued. She wore a single-breasted Dolce & Gabbana safari jacket, a simple green t-shirt, green pants of an unknown brand, and Chuck Taylor Low 70s in iron grey.

IMG_4598r.jpg

IMG_4599r.jpg

On July 3, Melania visited the National Children’s Hospital to decorate for Independence Day. She opted for Roger Vivier Ballet Flats in off-white patent leather, paired with a 2019 Gabriela Hearst Mirtha Pintucked Polka-Dot Silk Twill Shirt in ivory and navy. The timeless quality of the shirt proves that well-made clothing can remain stylish years later.

IMG_4602r.jpg

IMG_4603r.jpg

Speaking of timeless, a private Japanese collector purchased Jane Birkin’s original Hermès bag for a staggering $10 million, far exceeding the expected six-figure price. It’s safe to say this iconic bag won’t be used for everyday errands.

IMG_4601r.jpg

Elsewhere in the forest, Ivanka Trump was spotted with Wendi Murdoch at the Allen & Co. Media and Technology Conference in Sun Valley. Ivanka’s summer-appropriate outfit was chic yet approachable. She wore a Destree Hans cotton dress in white ($620), Margaux Demijane woven ecru leather shoes ($325), a Celine Cabas Phantom medium bag in white ($1,850), and Velvet Canyon’s The Poet sunglasses in black ($249), totaling around $3,000.

IMG_4597r.jpg

IMG_4616r.jpg

Want to recreate Ivanka’s look for less? Here’s a budget-friendly alternative:

IMG_4619r.jpg

Dress- Maeve Mona Linen Shirt Dress (Anthropologie, $18
Shoes- Sanctuary Gia Woven Mary Jane Ballet Flats (Dillard’s, $65 on sale)
Bag- Valentina Leather Tote (TJ Maxx, $60)
Sunglasses - Quay Aura Pointe 35mm Round Sunglasses (Quay, $75)

Total? $388

For an even more affordable option, shop entirely at Target:

IMG_4618r.jpg

Dress- August Sky ($26)
Shoes- Wild Fable Lorelei Woven Mary Jane Flats with memory foam insole ($35)
Bag- A New Day Work Tote Bag ($35)
Sunglasses- A New Day ($15)
Total? $111

As we move forward from this week’s mix of heartache and hope, we’re reminded to hold tight to faith and love. Melania’s quiet grace and mama-bear heart shone through, while Ivanka’s sunny, chic vibe at Sun Valley gave us fashion inspiration to play with—on a budget, no less! Let’s embrace next week with big energy, bold style, and hearts full of positivity.

------

Thank you, Piper - very nicely done.

At least, we think we have taken every precaution. Sometimes there are so many variables at play that one cannot possibly account for them all. Just go on and enjoy your evening.

32 I don't know if I am allowed to hijack the thread this early. Paul's cousin, Riva (who I can vouch for personally), lives in Fredericksburg, TX, and is helping out where she can in the Kerrville arra (16 mile straight drive from FDB). I know that we have dome horse lovers in this group, so I am passing this along if anyone wants to help in addition to direct help to the volunteers:

I’ve been a bit quiet yesterday and today about the help we are working to give our first responders/volunteers. With the weekend comes many extra folks who are off and wanting to help wherever they can. I respect that and made a conscious decision to step back a tad to give them space….to help in a form is very healing, we all deserve that.
There will be a huge change starting this evening. Many of the workers who have been helping will leave because of needing to get back to their regular life or job, that’s just life. Many others will step in those empty spots, while still others will continue to be here working just as diligently as they have for the past two weeks. We need them all!
Some of the needs are a bit different then just a couple of days ago, but there are still huge needs (cont)

47 Riva continues:

Tomorrow I will reach out to another equine group about feed and vet needs. Also tomorrow, I will be contacting the Navasota Equine Surgey Clinic about donating toward equine Phoenix’s surgery costs. Phoenix’s young owner (I believe she is somewhere 19-22 yo) who has done a number of water rescue missions before, is doing all she can to save her brave partner’s life. As they were searching one the muck Phoenix stepped onto what turned out to be false solid mud, but in reality had a huge air pocket under it and thus swallowed horse and rider to Phoenix’s neck area. (Kind of think quick sand scenario,) and they couldn’t get out. Phoenix was pretty badly injured and once out, was rushed to this fine surgery facility with a 50/50 chance of saving his life. From the information I have received so far, the surgery was successful and there is good hope for a full recovery. I will call the clinic to confirm all information and make a direct payment to the clinic.

Just passing that along, if anyone is interested!

Anything phylips gets the drill and whatever fucked up #2 bit I have laying around. Then replace wth torx because never use a phylips screw twice. Flat head I cut to the chase. I die grind out the head and use vice grips when I can get to the shaft. Most shit made with flat heads is old as hell and rusted anyway. Probably my least favorite screw head. Phylips is next least favorite. I like torx, the six pionty one. Allen is good too. The rest I could do without. A lot of them are security type screws.

I knew "Bohemian Rhapsody" because of Wayne's World and some guys in my high school re-creating the scene for our talent show. It was only once internet video took off that I realized how much I liked Queen's music.

That being said, I'm less than a minute into the video posted and Freddie tests out the piano by playing the first part of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1? Friggin awesome.

66 Hey Horde,

I would like a quick opinion. I'm cleaning my last of my late ,other's bedroom now that the house is mine after 6 month's of torture, which I can miraculously laugh about now.

Anyways, Mom was a nun for 14 years. There are some stuff I'm finding that I know she would want kept.

But there are other things like a book of nuns that served Northern Ohio since 1850. I don't know if she even ever looked at it. I'm debating whether to pitch or keep. I'll never look at it. But I'm also not short on space.

I'm thinking I'll keep it and revisit it later.

There were small bottles of what I'm guessing was holy water. No labels, nothing. I was just going to pitch but is there a special way to get rid of it? I could probably just keep them in a drawer too and when I'm finally blessed with a family and kids, the kids can toss it....

Back to the last few drawers....

76 I know that many of you are vehemently opposed to Facebook, but for any of you who are still on it who would like to know how they can help with the situation down in the Kerrville area, Riva Koch Davis is Paul's cousin on there. She is linking lots of good things on FB about items that are desperately needed by the volunteers who are down there.

One of the posts she put up earlier today was from one of the folks who is coordinating some of the personal needs of the volunteers; you can actually order stuff through Amazon and have it delivered directly to one of the hotel's in Fredericksburg where many of the volunteers are staying; they will be sure that it gets distributed to those who need them.

The Cajun Navy said (another post that Riva put up today, with contact information) that they are in need of IV supplies to help keep the volunteers hydrated - they have pretty much cleaned all of the medical places out of their things until the next shipment comes in!

Thanks, Horde, for all of your help 😊♥️🙏

Her cousin is a priest so she has stuff that was blessed in Jerusalem.

The dresser by the bed will be much easier to clean since I won't be finding laminated love letters from my father. All my retard brother got was cash. I have 14 years of memories and no regrets.

I did let him know her last words were my name being called over and over. I was going to take that to my grave but not after the last six months. Thanks everyone.

Have a happy week. I will.

I agree on the overuse, but I think it is appropriate here. This bag represents the epitome of luxury Hermes, there is a huge amount of respect for it, the design, the quality. And because you can’t just go buy a new one off the shelf, it maintains status. It is the Marilyn Monroe of purses, not the cheap Madonna Version. 😂

One night at some gathering I went to after a guitar show we were drinking copious amounts of booze. Of course there were a lot of guitars laying around from the guys playing around with their new acquisitions. I was trying out one of the guitars and for some reason still unknown to me my photographic memory for music turned on me and out of nowhere I started playing the opening chords to fleetwood mac's Rhiannon. Moral of the story- in berserker world when the fleet mac appears out of nowhere, THAT is too much drinking.

As for yours truly, I am about to fall into bed. I've had a late snack so I won't be too hungry tomorrow morning; I cannot have anything to eat or drink after midnight in prep for my mild hernia surgery tomorrow. I've showered with the antiseptic they gave me, put on clean pjs and clean sheets, and set the alarm. Aside from that, it will all be up to the medical staff at the outpatient shop. Let us hope and pray they are sober and not going through personal tragedies!

Wish me luck tomorrow!

On the other hand, the Buick takes regular instead of premium. I'd grit my teeth over that every time I filled up the BMW.

188 We live in a house that was built in 1907. The original owners did something with horses in Temple, Texas before they moved to Fort Worth. I don't know how they managed to stay undisturbed in the attic all those years, but when we moved into the house in 1985 and started doing renovations to items in the attic, Mr. TiFW ran across a LOT of paperwork in a couple of boxes that had fallen into the eaves somehow and had just been sitting there all that time.

LOTS of receipts from a feed store in Temple where the French family had bought cottonseed (or meal) to feed the livestock when they lived there. We even found a "gentleman's agreement" between Mr. French and AJ Tandy in 1897 for the sale of cattle at "x" dollars per head, all of them to be alive at the time of sale.

We have that one framed, along with all of the other items that could be salvaged.

Of course they lied. They always lie. They think you'll magically slide the new unit in and have it dock with the original ductwork like it was a frigging space station, and forgetting that you might just want to duct tape the connection which isn't happening from inside the bathroom. Then there's the wiring that you hope has enough slack and isn't stapled to a beam in the attic 12" away where you can't get to it from inside to pull slack JUST in case the hookup on the new unit is on the other side of where the original was. They always lie.

Off with their heads!

Okay, not yet.

But later. . . .

In high school, was going to see Foghat open for Mountain. I had a VW Squareback, so lots of people room, if not the coziest of seating accomodations. And OSHA or whoever hadn't mandated seatbelts in the backs of station wagon-type cars yet.

There was a group of us. Partying, naturally. Mostly drinking alkyhol from our separate bottles. We get to the arena parking lot, get out and I lock the car up. We start walking towards the turnstyles to have our tickets ripped in half and this one guy starts running toward the turnstyles screaming, 'I'VE STORMED THE BASTILLE'. He was drunk on his ass on straight gin out of his bottle. We looked at each other stunned. No, no, we don't know him (what we we going to do with him instantly in custody?) as they took him away to what we found out later to be the hospital he was so drunk. No one knew he was that bombed. Until he stormed the Bastille.

Some people love the drugs more than they love life. There is not one damned thing you can do about it. Please don't feel guilty. It isn't worth the heartache.

I think it is rather like what God does when we die. We get whatever we love the most. So, if you have loved Jesus enough to keep His commandments, you will have Jesus and all will be well. If not, well, guess what? Not God's fault.

We are not God, but we do know we have to do the right things or face consequences. The addicts know this too. They just don't care.

247 A JIS screwdriver will drive Phillips screws just fine, but, as noted by Berserker-Dragonheads Division, the reverse is not true.
The Japanese are very good with that sort of subtle protectionism. I have no doubt that the Japanese standards organization that defined JIS also requires their use in products sold to any official groups.
US speakers don't require any protection. You overdrive it and melt the coil, BFD. The coils are usually hanging out on their own, or surround by fiberglass, so little danger of fire. However, any speaker sold in Japan must be fused, by a special fuse. Actually, the only thing special about it is the length - longer than an SAE. So, anyone wishing to sell speakers in Japan must use the special fuseholder. A standard metric or SAE fuseholder is too short. However, Japanese made speakers with the special fuse and fuseholder can be sold in the US, which has no requirements. Here's the good part: the Japanese fuseholder has a long enough spring, so that, if the fuse blows in the US, a standard SAE fuse will work.
Engineered to allow export, but discourge imports.

Posted by: Hatari Somewhere on Ventura Highway at July 14, 2025 01:24 AM (WF/xn)

The trick with slotted screwdrivers is on how you grind the screwdriver tip. Most screwdrivers you buy will have a tip that has perfectly parallel faces. Put that into a screw slot and turn, where does it engage? Only on the corners. Doesn't grip very well, and will readily cam out, buggering the screw slot in the process. Grind the faces into a shallow arc on each side, so that end-on, it looks like a double-convex lens.

Like this: () But not so extreme. Just a tetch thinner at the edges than in the middle. Put that in the screw slot and turn, and it grips on the flanks of the curve, and makes contact with the slot over a much wider span. It really makes a remarkable improvement. Just a few seconds on the wheel of a bench grinder can turn a crappy screwdriver into much better tool. It's ridiculously easy to do.

286 Syria getting hot. Clashes in north (Kurds) and apparent regime offensive in south (Druze). Kurdish issue might be serious as other groups will take heed if Damascus retreats on federalism pledges. Israel likely to intervene in south if regime doesn't back off. In addition to the pretty unsavory types spearheading regime effort in south (ISIS patches on some), it's alleged regime is renting bedouin muscle to harass the Druze.

Pretty standard stuff for that "country", really, but still.

DHS Secretary Kristi Noem has just revealed 5 MORE "ALLIGATOR ALCATRAZ" facilities may be coming soon.

YES, build these nationwide. They are using Florida as a model.

"I'm having ongoing conversations with five other governors about facilities that they may have."

"We're looking at other locations as well. We've had several other states that are actually using Alligator Alcatraz as a model for how they can partner with us as well.

"We need to double our capacity and detention beds because we need to facilitate getting people out of this country as fast as possible and to sustain our operations."

289 If you mean Syria, regime = Damascus interim govt., which US/west is helping (removing sanctions etc) probably in an effort to see if the dodgy interim prez can hold the thing together.

Good lord, they're actually following a successful, low-cost model with minimal environmental impact that can be disassembled when it's no longer needed? YOU CALL THIS GOVERNMENT??

293 Morticia, I'm wondering if they'll set up a detention center on Pendleton. Makes sense. CA has no say, place has abundant cheap labor (lol) and experience in setting up expedient facilities. For both the '75 and '78 Vietnamese refugee situations (remember, back when "refugee" actually meant what it means) Pendleton was a major holding facility. I'm sure Uncle Sam's Misguided Children can quickly get the job done if given the order.

Posted by: rhomboid at July 14, 2025 02:15 AM (1m82a)

294 Oh, and of course Pendleton has airfields and can support all kinds of aviation. Namely DHS Airlines, where all trips are one-way.

Ho-lee, Pendleton of course. Oh hell that's hilarious, right in Gavin's front yard. Border Patrol right there on the 5 just alongside Pendleton to contribute any strays (I can't imagine anyone is crashing the border in the trunk of a car anymore, but that post is there for a reason). The Coast Guard, which has been picking up boatloads of them off Point Loma, could drop them off at an improvised detention center for transportation up the freeway.

Perfect!

296 Like this: () But not so extreme.

301 Howdy, to anyone still here.

Ah, tonight was a real zinger. Sibling was drunk and unruly... had to 'cut him off' and wait for him to sober up before telling him to leave. I just can't even, with this sh!t.

Dear Lord, do I not have enough problems? Why do I feel as though I'm being punished here on earth, these last few years?
