Our Pal Plutonium Highway Patrol! This week's exciting episode: Father Thief The Snow Creature! Is this a repeat? I sort of think it's a repeat. ![]() While in DC over the Fourth, I took Daughter of Diogenes Number One and my son-in-law to dinner at Morton's (a fantastic steakhouse) in Reston. The food was fantastic, the wine excellent, and as always, the company was perfect. It's not often I get to sync up with Team Diogenes and I savor those moments. Like any good steakhouse, Morton's has a cigar menu. I selected the P.G. (Paul Garmirian) Gourmet Series Churchill. What followed was a reminder that smoking a cigar can often be influenced by where you smoke it, and under what conditions. The cigar itself was a medium strength (although I thought it a bit on the mild side) with a balance of spicey flavors of pepper and cinnamon, mellowed by a background of leather. Together they produced a wonderful tobacco aroma. The cigar was made in the Dom Rep using a variety of fillers with an Ecuadorian wrapper. A smooth smoke, even ash, an easy draw and, as mentioned, the aroma. Wow!!! Which leads me to my point at the start. Where you smoke is important. I got to DC for the last few days of the 'Heat Dome' and it was hot, humid, and just plain uncomfortable. But these are sometimes ideal conditions for a good cigar. The smoke just seems to linger, to float about and it is like seeing the humidity in the air. I find this really enhances the smoking experience. I was not in a fancy cigar room (I was outside on the deck) but damned if it just felt right, particularly when paired with some Glenmorangie single malt. In short, if you gotta suffer in that kind of weather, do it in a way that makes it worth it. Price warning; these ain't cheap, but not obscene either so if you want to treat yourself, don't buy any lattes for a few days. It will be worth it and you will thank me later. (Note: I bought two; one for after dinner and one, as shown, for the golf course.) (Note 2: Like my hat?)Excellent, Diogenes! I agree, a good cigar and a balmy location go great together! Thank you! The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. No gun-thread worthy activity to report. I was outside, on the tractor, slinging dead engines around. Dead 350 from the '99 Suburban got placed on a rolling SBC cradle, and put into the big shop, where it can be pushed into a corner to mellow. Out of the weather, at any rate.
The dead 170 that came from the Zip van got picked up, placed on a barrel, and teardown begun. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at July 13, 2025 07:07 PM (joBNx) 10
No range report. Just doing my best on not purchasing the scope or anything else for my next rifle.
I am also in the process of renewing my handgun license and rifle/shotgun permit for NYC. Currently they are set to expire near the end of August 2025. I submitted the renewal forms back near the end of May. I received an email stating they have moved the forms to the investigation phase and allow 18-20 WEEKS for them to process the renewal. Due to this I am reticent about acquiring any new firearms as NYC obviously cannot keep up with the work load and I do not want to get pulled over and get in trouble for having something I legally purchased but is not in their system in a timely manner. The Alliant is definitely not as powerful as the Hodgdon, but I’ve got 3 more pounds of it and a truckload of 120s. And they are all running around 3/4 MOA at 100 yards. I think I’ll take the best load up top and see how it does in the wind. Posted by: RI Red at July 13, 2025 07:12 PM (qEeiR) 17

Think about it - premium cigars are most famous from Cuba, and after Castro even more from the DR, Nicaragua, Honduras. Climate in all these places? Tends towards the hot and humid. Good evening good people.
Yearly weapons qualification for Parish Security Team was held this week. This year the set up was a bit different than from years earlier - a couple drills with movement and one or two with mag dumps, reloads and then resume firing. Three guys earned remedial training - two of them had NDs with the third missing the broad side of a barn repeatedly. RSO NOT happy. A bit scary honestly. One of the best cigars I ever had was a DR monte no 2 bought in 7-11. Not even close to a great cigar. But I smoked it on the shore of a lake on a perfect night with a decent scotch and a European supermodel leaned up against me. Not joking. The cigar was not great. Nor was the scotch. One of the most ... impactful things I ever saw in a simulator was in the B-1 Offensive Systems Operator (OSO) position. On the bombing run, the bay doors indicator went from CLOSED to OPEN. the "bay" indicator went from FULL to PARTIAL, and the bay doors indicator went from OPEN to CLOSED. Then the electronic map blanked and reset with the next target. And 1 million people had just become so many constituent atoms. Blink, blink, blink, blink and poof.

Here is a question.
So I have the rifle and scope selected for my next build. I am going to purchase the rings for the scope from a place that has the Weasel seal of approval (logo pending). I have a choice of two materials, aluminum or steel and I have a choice of ring heights, low, standard, medium, high and EX-high. What does one choose? Buy now or wait until you have rifle/scope in hand to get an idea? I might even have to get a rifle base to give my more MOA. Decisions, decisions. I had a case of expired canned dog food and a bunch of .357 magnum loads, and so what the heck! I set up the cans on posts with the top of the cans facing me and let her rip. Boy, howdy, them cans get splody when a .357 hollow point hits them! Beef and lamb puree all over the place. I policed up what was left of the cans and left the former contents for the critters to snack on. Fun times.

Took the .32 ACP Walther PPK to the range this weekend for a test drive at an FBI qualification target. The PPK's sights make the pistol marginal at best for bullseye shooting. I wanted to try it on a (roughly) man sized target to see how it would do at 10 yards. I managed to get the majority of the shots in the center target box. I also tried a couple of magazines one-handed at 10 yards. About half my shots hit inside the center target box shooting one-handed. The other half outside the box hit fairly close to it. Shooting .32 ACP with one hand produces mild recoil that's easily (for me, anyway) controlled.

Magazines are an expendable item for any semi-auto pistol, so getting spares is in order. Yes, the springs can be stiff. That's because the springs' tension is what feeds fresh rounds into the chamber. If a magazine is giving you problems you can't handle, don't be afraid to replace it with another one. Uberti 1866 repro is only lever gun so far, but an older Rossi in .357 remains a goal. 1866 is in 45 Colt, not historically accurate but easy to reload and perfect for silhouette matches.
Plus I can do part of my upper body resistance workout with the rifle between shots, it weighs a crap ton. And recoil is nothing. Posted by: rhomboid at July 13, 2025 07:44 PM (1m82a) 72

No, no shooting stuff this week. I did get my a/c fixed today, finally. And I went to a casino this week - took my wife and son and daughter-in-law to a show. It was somewhat troublesome to have to leave my EDC in the car.
It was also a pretty lame casino, IMO. And I don't particularly like casinos. But the show was pretty good (the wife's favorite comedian). Posted by: GWB at July 13, 2025 07:44 PM (IKydn) 74
Good evening y'all, back from another parental trip in Pittsburgh. No range time, but that will be remedied this week. Instead, since I returned home alone, I decided to test just how fast my little car can go without collecting any unexpected paperwork from cars with lights on top. And the little car did just fine....

Champion has a rifle range that goes out to 600 yards but for reasons we could only shoot out to the 400 yard targets.
I brought sra blasters Howa 1500 to Florida so we could go to a long range - but the one in Florida did not allow non-members on the long rifle range. Champion was like pay us money and we will let you shoot. $30 pp for a day pass 5% off for veterans and active military and first responders. We had zeroed at 100 earlier so we we shot 200 yards first. Ding ding the steel rings. Then we go to 300.... Posted by: blaster at July 13, 2025 07:45 PM (RoO7G) 76

Asking for a friend. So, anyway, a good spotter makes all the difference. I packed the rifle but not our spotting scope so we picked up a little 10x monocular at Walmart because better than nothing. A guy two lanes over had a nice rifle set up with a big scope. He said "you're shooting too low". Need to come up (he guessed) about 2 MOA. Okay. 8 clicks. Boom. On one Armed Forces Day, they drove the launcher onto a field about 20 yards in front of the public bleachers, sprung up the prop and launched it with the JATO units. Posted by: SMOD at July 13, 2025 08:05 PM (GITLP) 97

Posted by: rhomboid ====== Berry Bullets did have some plated 30 Carbine awhile back. Those kind of fit in the middle of as lead is usually a pita for cleaning in gas operated carbines but the plated usually have pedestrian accuracy in rifles (deform more easily from pressure) than fmj, or half jacketed types. This week has been all about cleaning up and my reloading station and gun parts are all sorted. Still have some work to do on gun boxes, etc. If I am lucky, I will be able to get back into repairing/finishing the couple of projects that I have left. One is finishing an 1886/93 Lebel, another is restocking a Lithgow SMLE converted to 410. I will probably have the chamber lengthened on the 410 so as to fire regular 410 shells instead of the midget and hard to get ones. That particular task will go to a gunsmith. Range report this week: The frickin' flood at our property "rearranged" some of my gun range equipment and the shooting stand.
I built it at an elevation just below the 100 year flood contour. The water is usually fairly placid when it floods to that elevation. However, things that float did get moved! It was merely a flesh-wound though, all is easily fixable. Posted by: Pillage Idiot at July 13, 2025 08:15 PM (HlyYF) 113

whig I am eyeing the plated 30C bullets as they’re 30% cheaper than FMJ. As I aspire only to practical accuracy (minute-of-human-torso @150yds), it’s tempting to cheap out. Online research seems to show most guys find the plated to have good performance in the little M1.

Re grip, I have always used a wedge grip. I am not trying to get gilt edge target accuracy which is also why I use a crush tight hold as well (well, nowadays semi crush is about all I can do).
The wedge grip allows for use on a variety of pistol types and is excellent from the point of weapons retention. And it can be consistently applied to smaller as well as larger pistols. I used a S&W 6946 as an understudy to my 5946/43/44 Third Generation and it worked fine for DAO only. One of the tricks to shooting revolvers and/or DA/SA or DAO with 8lb + triggers is the crush hold with a wedge grip. Not crazy about the wedge/crush on a 1911 but since I shoot that rarely, doesn't matter much. Works okay on the smaller BHP. Posted by: whig at July 13, 2025 08:18 PM (ctrM5) 117

Posted by: rhomboid ======= The M1 is on the borderline as far as pressure deformation. FWIW, Lee Reloading Manuals actually has an excellent section dealing with bullet deformation due to pressure so you can tailor reduced loads to work with cast bullets (it is adjacent to the bullet casting chapter). Your groups open up at the point of the bullet base becoming deformed from pressure and Lee's formula cuts down on the trial and error of finding a good cast load. Would probably work on plated as well with mebbe a tweak. You notice the deformation effects a bit more with 7.62x39 reloads as the pressure is a tad higher on those. I got a new Sig P365 and am signing up for a CCL class next month. The magazine springs are ridiculously hard and I purchased a loader to help out. I can't get more than four rounds to load in the 12 round magazine. When I press down, it's as if there is something blocking it, not just that it's hard to press.
Hopefully you got a Maglula Uplula. You should be able to load them with that. Load it up, and let the mag sit for 2 to 4 weeks. That will ease it a bit. Posted by: Duncanthrax at July 13, 2025 08:39 PM (0sNs1) 144

I don't think the issue was the color necessarily. My EDC has an Sig Romeo 0 and I did not adjust it from my regular brightness and it was visible enough.
The red dot on the EP9 is one of the famous $25 Gaialoops that are discontinued. They can't get bright enough for the summer sun. Posted by: blaster ====== Ah, I see. I did read where some people had more trouble with red dots than other colors in direct sunlight but it is an individual by individual thing. I have red dots (and one prismatic on the AR10) on a few of my rifles but none on handguns. Posted by: whig at July 13, 2025 08:40 PM (ctrM5) 146

Blaster I’m up to 4 lever guns.
My first was a Marlin 45-70 CS - extra long barrel and an 8 round magazine. Heck of a gun for large critters. Weighs about 12 pounds with scope. Second was a Marlin in .35 Remington. Third is a Henry Big Boy in .44 and it’s become my go-to deer gun with Hornady lever gun ammo. Last is an Uberti in .45 Colt for the Cowboy shoots. All are great to use and far more accurate than I am. Posted by: Coelacanth at July 13, 2025 08:42 PM (3Aazl) 148

Posted by: Duncanthrax ======== Good advice. While cleaning my reloading/gun room today, I found an AR clip spoon for reloading AR magazines on clips (like they used to come with back in the day). Another spoon still had the clip inside the spoon. Your hands can get sore pretty quickly without mechanical assistance on loading magazines and range time is too expensive for most of us to do it at the range. Blaster, what Whig said about shooting .22 at 200 + yards. Very humbling, and is a good stand in for larger calibers at longer range.
Plus, it is very gratifying to hear a tiny little “tink” when you get a hit. Though it takes several seconds and you need to turn your hearing aids up a bit. Posted by: RI Red at July 13, 2025 08:45 PM (z1SIt) 152

I can see it for a 44 Magnum and such. If you plan on the 357 being a Florida bush gun, you could do far worse than a Stainless Steel Vacquero. The fact that you have to thumb the hammer back to fire deliberately makes them a bit safer if you are getting into brush and Ruger's transfer bar safety helps you carry six in the chamber safely. This has not happened to me before. Same brand of ammo (Herter's 9mm 115 grain) and same gun (Glock 43.) Not sure if I am doing something different/wrong when loading it? Worked on re-acquiring the target in the sights right away after each shot. Have been working to increase my hand strength with a grip/forearm strengthening device and I can see a difference.

Frankie, have you tried different weight ammo (124 grain or 147 grain)? Or a different brand of 115 grain ammo? A lot of 9mm handguns use 124 grain 9mm NATO standard pressure ammo because they're meant to compete for military or police contracts. NATO standard pressure is hotter than US standard pressure ammo. If you can't find a 115, 124 or 147 grain round that works, you might want to try 124 grain 9mm NATO pressure rounds. Ammo QC/QA can also play a part too. You might want to get some more magazines.

Frankie,
Sometimes my G42 will fail to eject if I am not locking my wrist against the recoil. I’ve had loads of wrist injuries, so it is more comfortable for me to let the pistol bark upwards a bit after a shot. But that causes the failure. Try locking your wrist and perhaps using a tighter grip. Posted by: nurse ratched at July 13, 2025 09:22 PM (mT+6a) 189

Posted by: Frankie FWIW, temperature usually ends up spiking pressures with the cheap powder used in range ammo. Try some std. Federal, Winchester, Speer, range ammo. As Ed L says above, extraction problems can be related to the extractor, the recoil impulse generated by firing the cartridge, magazine spring too weak, the recoil spring in the firearm, and whether the chamber is dirty. You can also have some issues with ammo selection that one pistol will shoot just fine while others will not. One last thing, I would make sure that the Herters is not steel cased as that can cause problems in certain firearms as well. Steel cased ammo does not expand as much as brass and so often it does not seal the chamber completely allowing carbon fouling. Posted by: whig at July 13, 2025 09:26 PM (ctrM5) 193
I know some Herter's is steel cased. Generally, that shouldn't be a problem but some guns can be finicky. Definitely try a few different brands/weights of ammo.

Posted by: Oddbob ======== The problem with steel is usually fouling. Unless you are firing thousands of rounds of it, it is rare that it wears an ejector and extractor enough to damage those. Some crazy dudes used to even reload steel cases from WWII (45 ACP if I remember). The major problem with it- according to them was it could damage your reloading dies if you did not lube every case and required muscle to taper crimp the bullet back in place. It can also rust which is the major bad thing about steel cases. Posted by: whig at July 13, 2025 09:32 PM (ctrM5) 198
196 I thought I read somewhere, any ammunition that gets exposed to direct sunlight, and gets hot, the pressures will spike to a considerable … degree
Posted by: Common Tater ======= It can. Expensive canister powders like for self defense (and reloading) have broad temperature curves from frigid to Sahara desert. But cheapo range stuff or careless reloading up to the red pressure line can actually change the pressure curve/burning rate to cause problems if left in direct sunlight and it is hot enough. Too much to discuss how hot and humid temperature storage affects long term powder stability but it does not help it at all.
