Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Thanks for stopping by. Kick back and enjoy the world of animals.

Would you like a treat?

Let's relax a little with the animals and leave the world of politics and current events outside today.

Do you agree with these assessments?

In case you haven't learned that we have lost Ciampino:

Scampydog, July 8: Late ONT addition.

Joyenz.JPG

Thank you Joyenz for keeping us all informed. Your dad was an amazing part of this place. Godspeed to you, your family, and Ciampino. We will miss his news, space/launch updates, chemistry talk, kitties, Africa memories, history lessons, warmth, and the wit he shared with us here at AoSHQ. He was a titan.

Here at the Pet Thread, we especially appreciated his care for kitties, especially the feral ones. Joyenz wrote in the comments last week that she appreciated this photo from Eris, which was posted late:

Feral Cuties:

A feral cat and her three kittens (two tuxedos and a grey tabby) have taken up residence beneath my back porch and often join me in lolling in the sun.

And yes, I know my porch desperately needs sanding and repainting.  Soon!

Eris

We hope that Joyenz will continue to stay in touch here at the Pet Thread.

From yesterday:

Hi KT,

We are putting our beloved Gigi down today.  She was our beautiful, shy and highly complicated baby girl. She is one month shy of nine but in our family, she is the youngest girl with two older cat sisters.  In April they thought she had pancreatitis but nothing they suggested worked and we went to the specialist who declared that she had protein losing enteropathy caused by inflammatory bowel disease.  We tried all the things and for a while it helped but she was never back to normal and was losing weight the whole time.  She lost over 20 pounds.  If any one of the horde has a dog diagnosed with this my heart goes out to you.  It is a gut-wrenching disease as you don't know what they react to, and you are guessing and trying your best, but nothing made her better.  When we took her in on Tuesday, they found fluid in her abdomen and chest cavity and possibly a mass.  We got to spoil her these last two days, giving her all the food and treats that she couldn't have while on her restrictive diet.   But now she doesn't even want the best and most amazing treats, so it is time.  We will miss her so very much, but no one will miss her more than her brother Littleman, for she was his whole world.

WeeKreekFarmGirl

So devastating to learn that you have lost sweet Gigi. Give some extra love to Littleman for us.

This is Mikey. He was named after Mike the tiger, the LSU mascot. When he was a kitten, he was white as snow, but he grew up to be a rather large tabby. His mother was a full-blooded Siamese, though you'd never know to look at him.
About 12 years ago, he developed a serious blockage of the urinary tract, which could only be corrected by surgery. The cost of the surgery was $2000, which I could not afford. He was in great pain, and I thought about having him put to sleep, but in the end I couldn't go through with it. I borrowed the money, and the operation was a success. My brother-in-law joked that for $2000 I could have bought 1000 cats for a dollar apiece.

After a long and happy life, Mikey finally started showing the signs of age. This time there was nothing the vet could do. He spend most of his last few days sitting on my arm and purring while I read or watched TV. He crossed the rainbow bridge last night around midnight, and is buried in my front yard, near his frienemy Tipsy, who proceeded him last year.

Toad-0

Mikey was certainly loved. Thanks for sharing his story. He has such a lovely face.

Chicks B, C and D are doing well. Chick A went to see the vet last Friday, and indeed has Splay Legs. This post will focus on him.

Dr. S binded his legs with surgical tape and a small piece of pool noodle for separation. He now has his legs under him, but has to be immobilized. He is currently in a smallish box with pool noodles and kleenex packed in to keep him still. The box is placed in the brooder and he gets taken out multiple times a day for feeding, cleaning and 'therapy'. I have a follow up appointment with Dr. S on 7/23 where he will remove the bindings and access the progress.

Today's pictures are of Chick A actually standing in the feeding tray, a closer picture of the bindings and him in his box. Notice that his feathers are starting to come in.

We will not be posting next week as things will be status quo.

Regards,
David

The details of the treatment for splay leg are really interesting. Chick A is getting bigger, too.

Hello, KT!  Glad to see you are back and doing well.

Attached is a pic of a Moron-adjacent animal, a good-sized wolf snail Miss Linda spotted in her outdoor potted plant after a rainstorm in May.  According to our research, he's a carnivorous snail that feeds only on other snails.  He has three pairs of antennae, one of which is mustache-like, as well as the regular ones that look like cute ears.  He was not shy at all, crawled around on her arms, and didn't retreat into his shell.  (Being a predator like that, I'd guess, he does have quite the nerve.)

He visited for several hours until she returned him to his natural outdoor life.  No doubt he will have a fantastic story to tell the other wolf snails down at the snail pub.  "Aliens are real, guys!  This giant alien creature picked me up . . ."

Wolfus Aurelius

My second- favorite type of snail.

5 Afternoon, Pet Folken! KT, thanks; I'm amazed that you got the Wolf Snail in this week! Yes, I got to meet the snail and even had him crawl (at the speed you'd expect -- why do you think they call it a "snail's pace"?) across my hand. I'll admit that snails, with their ear-like antennae, are actually rather handsome creatures.

Toad-O, there have been times in my life where spending $2000, even $500, to save the life of one of my feline friends would have been impossible for me to manage. I'm glad you were able to borrow the funds and keep Mikey happy and healthy for twelve more years.

8 I need to dig up kitten pics of Dagny La Siberienne and Stirling the Great Black Cat, combine them with current shots, and fire them off to petmorons [at] protonmail [dot] com. Linda showed me a Gorgle-assembled series of Stirling's kitten pics this morning, and he has changed a lot in three years . . . but not as much as Dagny has. She was not as full-ruffed back then, for one thing.

Gorgle also put together a sequence of pics from the late Chekov D. Siberian's time on Earth. Damn, but he was a beautiful cat. Even in his last days he was still good-looking. If only I can manage that --!

9 Living in a rural area i've been seeing deer more often lately. Last night on the drive home, one was standing on the side of the road. Fortunately, it chose to go back into the forest rather than straight across the road. I expected more activity later in the fall.

Wolf Snail seemed quite calm and collected the whole time. He had surfaces to slide over and explore; nobody to hurt him -- this was at Linda's, with no cats at present to threaten him -- and, I suppose (since I don't know how snails perceive the world), new stuff to "see" or absorb info about. I'd *hope* there was no snail equivalent of horror to his visit.

So sorry to read about Gigi and Mikey. I have never heard of the disease Gigi had. Our pets truly get some horrible things and it hurts that we can do nothing to save them.

I hope the little Chick's treatment goes well and that snail was interesting. In South Africa after it rained, we would have snails everywhere and had to be careful we didn't make them go crunch. Don't see snails much where we live in So. Illinois. We get plenty of slugs though.

17 So sad to hear about pets who have crossed the rainbow bridge.

The comment--"We got to spoil her these last two days, giving her all the food and treats that she couldn't have while on her restrictive diet"--made me think of SiL's dog who we dogsat many times. She had kidney failure and other problems and hadn't been able to eat properly for a while. When she made her final trip to the vet, they gave her the morphine and then brought in a paper plate of cookies, ham, cheese, cheese puffs and cake--everything she wasn’t supposed to have. She looked at it for a minute and then started gobbling it all down. It was a nice way to say goodbye to a very special girl.

My view is that super-smart black cat Marie-Antoinette intrigued to get herself crowned Queen of All Cats in Cat Heaven, and Chekov D. Siberian is one of her loyal courtiers, like Walter Raleigh was to Elizabeth I.

19 I am happy to report that the black cat audtioning to stay, showed up again wearing a collar. The owener found out, via FB, that two of us were feeding it. And it was a skinny cat so we had no idea it had a home. All the cats stopping by for a meal have had collars. I don't put one on Mr Trouble but it should be obvious he has a home. I guess I need a collar for the possum.

29 Hi Pet Threadists. Sometimes for the pets, I want to say what Ace said about Morons - quit dying! Imagine how long the Absent Friends list would be if it included our pets!
🥺

Dogsitting for daughter and son-in-law while they're on a belated anniversary vacation. Our Malinois Daisy is mostly good about the intrusion, but sometimes has to sneak off for some quiet private time. The old black cat Ony mostly stays in her little can't-get-to-me-here hut, but I dragged her out to sit in my lap and get sniffed by the intruders (whom she has met many times before). Yesterday, she just wandered out and jumped into the desk chair as if there were no dogs nearby. I think she may be getting better at dealing.

It hasn't all been fun.

Compact dog Maya sort-of led Daisy out into the pasture, then played "Who, me?" while we had to go out and drag Daisy away from herding the cattle. Have to admit her instincts are grand, and she packs the cattle together.

The visitors were supposed to stay in the main room at night, but the big thunderstorm night before last had them running into the bedroom with us. Lots of chaos at 4:30am. Now they seem to think they're allowed in anytime. Grr.

I put out a birdbath for them, and now I need to find a tiny Zamboni for winter. We have three nesting pairs of robins this year in various locations around the property, and they seem to get along okay with one another. I suppose easy food does that. A few magpies (always), a few ravens (always), and the occasional eagle, particularly when the fish are in the creek down the road. Eagles love to get into the trash, since they are trashy birds.

51 Thanks for all the kind comments about Gigi. She is much missed today. I keep hoping to see her laying in the other room or at the door waiting to be let in. Littleman has been very sad and quiet today. Didn't even ask for breakfast which is very unusual for him. We are going to take a week to catch our breath and then see about getting him another sister as we think being a Littleman, he needs a girl to admire his handsomeness.
Toad-O, sorry about Mikey, I will be thinking of you.
I had never heard of what Gigi had before she was diagnosed either. I do know that it was the most powerless I have ever felt, not being able to fix her. There was no magic pill, or thing that works for all dogs, and I felt defeated many, many days. And then there would be a glimmer and I thought we had turned a corner, but no.
We will bury her ashes under the fake grass in her favorite spot. Forever sunbathing, that is definitely how she would want it.

I read on the NRP thread earlier that you couldn't get internet in your area, even from Starlink.

You could try: hughesnet.com

They are satellite internet.
Similar to Dish and DirectTV for TV.

They have longer latency times than Starlink because their satellites are in a higher orbit, but other than that it's the same concept, and they should be available anywhere in the country.

It's a possible solution for you.
