I look at it this way. Those Yanks, or Yank lovers, were celebrating in their own space, only bothering people with fireworks. Took the Highlander in for an oil change today and the tech, a old timer with decades of Toyota experience, asked me - "Who drives this vehicle?"
Turns out that at the next change (115,000 miles) he'll replace the brake pads all the way around - he claims they are the original factory pads. Apparently Momma has a very light foot on those bad boys so that, and mostly highway driving, can do that. Posted by: Tonypete at July 11, 2025 10:08 PM (cYBz/) 19

Evening, all,
Weird day today. Was going to bring big black Stirling to the vet, but the Buick refused to start. Something called "Battery Saver Mode" was in effect, and I even saw a line of what was labeled as Linux (!) code in the entertainment center. Called AAA; it turned out to be the battery was low (maybe I left a light on? The stereo?). Battery is now recharged after a long drive, and I will buy a new and better one in a week or so. So Stirling got a reprieve, or actually a stay. The Superman movie thread this afternoon revived me, and my interest in going to see an actual movie at an actual theatre. Have Congress hire her to review bills that add or change the US Code. If it doesn't change it, or just deletes part of it, she skips those. She then gets to ask the Representative or Senator who submitted the bill questions. Just those people - no staff. The time she gets to question could be based on the size of the bill. When that's over, she announces whether she understands it or not. She has to give up being a judge, and no moonlighting. Her pay would be what it is now. The job exists until she retires, or Congress votes to kick her out. Posted by: Hour of the Wolf at July 11, 2025 10:25 PM (S/Y4j) 66

Posted by: Blonde Morticia at July 11, 2025 *** Great whacking chunks of it bear no resemblance whatever to the James M. Cain novel. Studios then were often as bad in their way as studios are now: They buy a property they like, thinking it will be a hit, and proceed immediately to change it. Kate Winslet starred in a TV miniseries adaptation of MP a few years ago. I've never seen it, but I got the impression they were going to try for a more faithful adaptation. And Kate is the right type; Mildred was described, not as a mannish brunette like Crawford, but as a small blonde. She was taken too early from he r mother and my wife and youngest daughter fed her milk from a baby bottle for a couple of weeks. She had about the same attitude as that one. The guy who was video'd doing that at the Paramount (part of LA area) chapter of the initial festivities over ICE actions in LA was being sought, don't know if they collared him. Various individuals have been arrested for interference, and I think assault, at some of the small melees involving ICE. Issue here is same as I noted in connection with Trump's "SLIMEBALLS" post (I hereby give it that title, for posterity) - tactical situation, and numbers. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at July 11, 2025 11:02 PM (omVj0) I had a cat named Feline, a black long haired cat who always held her tail up high like a flag. Had a very hard early life and really hated people, would hiss and spit at almost everyone - but I had been kind to her, and she decided that she loved me and hated everyone else. It was really astounding and strange to me, I’d never before (and probably never will again) have a pet so personally devoted to me, to the exclusion of all others. There were plenty of stories about her, she passed away a few years ago, but on her terms. Posted by: Tom Servo at July 11, 2025 11:09 PM (Hlfhp) 207

From the chart, Michigan, Baltimore, Idaho, Memphis all sound interesting but are not Correct. (In case you're wondering, ketchup on hot dog is Wrong if you're over the age of 12. Onions are not something I enjoy on hot dogs usually, but can be okay in small amounts or light flavor.) However, a chili cheese dog would soak up all of her stomach acid. If she was having a bad day at school, she would run home and I would make her a quick chili dog (and one for dad). I watched The Goldfinch to see just how they were going to cram that book into a single feature, and it's like they had someone write a one-page double-spaced plot summary, randomly subtracted key adjectives and added "not" before some words, and shot that. No one has ever had the inclination to make Wuthering Heights properly either, which gets my back up because there's a production underway right now. Starring as 18-year-old chestnut-locks in the year 1783 Catherine Earnshaw is... Margot Robbie. A publicity pic has been released of her wedding to Edgar Linton. We have a new cat. Black with a little white chest spt. It arrived the day before Dad passed. He did get to see a picture of the cat.
Luna is also a black cat with a small chest spot. She showed up soon after Mom passed away. She was pregnant with Cole and Ashley. Whether cat or human passes, a new cat either shows up right before or right after. Posted by: Joyenz at July 11, 2025 11:29 PM (sPQoU) 273

In all honesty, we will likely do without a critter for a few years, because we love to travel. Spur-of-the-moment road trips. Can't do that with a geriatric kitty. Posted by: Pug Mahon,With a Towel Yeah, that makes sense. We are going on vacation this week, and with the add of the dog, we are just having our pet sitter stay at the house. We haven’t left him alone and I feel like boarding him would be too traumatic at this stage. So overnight pet sitter it is! Not conducive to just up and leaving when you have to arrange all that. I really like corn dogs (when I can get them), with a stream of yellow mustard on the length, so why not corn relish? Just depends on what they put in it. I can see a red or hot pepper/onion/corn relish. I just don't need no carrots, shaved, grated or otherwise.
Posted by: RickZ Corn dogs are awesome!!!! There was a corn dog truck at the top of Snoqualmie Pass where we would stop after a day of snow skiing with the boys. She hand dipped the dogs on a stick into her corn bread batter and then into the hot oil. Pulled them out and handed to you with a paper protector on the bottom of the stick to keep the hot oil from burning your hand. Add mustard or ketchup as needed and burn tf out of your mouth eating them. So awesome. And great memories. Posted by: nurse ratched at July 11, 2025 11:29 PM (mT+6a) 275

In those days, Jack in the Box had a killer baconator burger or something like that - and spicy curly fries. Being young-er could eat just about anything (or thought I could). It makes me sad that even our junk food, as bad as it was, was at least addicitvely tasty. I mean, if you’re gonna pork out to 287, it ought to at least taste good.

At my local chili dog place, I never get cheese on the chili dog, because I know it's just two slices of American "cheese" for $1.50 (!) extra. But if I go to the hot dog place a few towns over, their chili is lousy, but the cheese is finely grated cheddar, and piled high on an all beef dog it's delicious.

"If both pilots were speaking the truth on that recording (and I think they were) then this brings up the possibility of a very sophisticated level of sabotage."
Thinking it through a bit, the one second delay between the switch cutoff is consistent with a human action time. A "computer" could deactivate both controls instantaneously. A smart saboteur could take this into account. But then... Why would the switches be restored later if it was sabotage. Only one engine restarted witch is probably why it crashed. Maybe if both had restated it would just be some weird glitch that was lost in the noise. I don't know much about the specific avionics in the Dreamliner but with the very strong trend these days to make pilots kind of accessories, I would really be looking at what other condition other than the physical switches being manipulated could have caused this to happen. There were four total glitches, one for each switch and one for each action. Very strange. I'm sure the airline pilots are discussing this somewhere. They made the day shift maintnence lady go to swing for a couple of weeks to train me. I don't really need much training but here I am. She is totally blown away how much nicer and fun work is on swing. Days is a cut throat, nobody gets along, everyone out for themselves kind of gig. Lots of turnover.
We on swing help each other. We truly act like a team. We double days production with 1/2 the people. They try and steal our people in hopes of finding "good workers" not realizing that everyone can be a "good worker" when they are treated with respect and not like some idiot who just fell off a turnip truck out front and stumbled through the door. We identify and correct issues. Days fires people for stupid shit. Totally unwarranted sometimes. We have lost some good people who were fine for months on swing then get moved and are gone before the end of the week. They have way to many cheifs and can't keep indians around. It's a night and day difference. Posted by: Reforger at July 12, 2025 02:26 AM (lPvx2) 391

They were able to fk-off a lot, and they DID... product quality went to sh*t.. and Days got to hear all about it, almost like accusation, and it built resentment. "Days" was full of slackers, too. Biding their time for retirement, didn't give a sh*t, buncha tattle-tales-- "trying to clip the wings of others, because they themselves could not fly..." Yeah. So glad I'm out. ——- Reading about the cold war and the F.B.I. there were communists infested at the highest levels, and their were voluminous detailed reports. Lots of finger pointing, and pass the buck. The Truman administration didn’t want to go after those guys. So they didn’t. If the President tells the DOJ not to do something, not to prosecute, then they won’t. Looks like same old same old going on 80 years now. The book is called Blacklisted by History, mainly about Senator Joseph McCarthy. The parallels in recent years sound very familiar, with the exception that the F.B.I. did an excellent job for their first 50 years, I think they’ve been institutionally flipped to some degree in the last 50, somehow. It is astonishing how many guilty-as-sin 'Red' State Department members were simply moved laterally to other departments/agencies. Whatever Hoover's personal proclivities were, he cared about America, and hated Reds. The FBI simply could not move without Justice and the WH. The Dems realized that the consequent damage to their party outweighed the well-being of the country and so quashed everything, while launching ad hominem attacks on McCarthy.
