Since everybody is looking at the guy with the acne rosacea, I presume he is Mr. Oldham, the host.
It might just be the kind of "nose-painting" that comes from too much wine and other adult beverages, of course. The guy on the right holding the bowl looks sort of like Nixon, or actor Dan Hedaya (you'll remember him as Carla' ex-husband on Cheers). In any event, he looks stunned, as if Mr. Oldham has just told him he has bought the guy's house out from under him, and the stunned guy has twenty-four hours to pack up and leave. I like the artist's skill with detail and skin tones. The way he captures the bowl, the pipe, and liquid is excellent. In this one I especially like the expression on the man second from the right: directed at Oldham and showing a sense of amusement. But some of the proportions feel off. The figure on the far right seems scrunched up. (He also reminds me of Richard Nixon.) Oldham's head looks like it was added at a later time.

Consumer spending UNEXPECTEDLY increased in June. By a lot. The msm has the sadz again that Trump hasn’t caused Great Depression Boogaloo.
“Retail sales rose 0.6% in June from the prior month, the Commerce Department said Thursday, rebounding from the steep 0.9% decline in May. June’s number was much stronger than the 0.2% gain economists projected in a FactSet poll. Spending climbed across categories last month, including at car dealerships, which saw one of the biggest monthly increases. Those sales were up a robust 1.2% in June” Once again economists have no fucking clue what they’re talking about. Every dire prediction they made about tariffs has been wrong. But they still have jobs as “experts” and will be quoted by the media as knowledgeable people. Posted by: Its Go Time Donald at July 17, 2025 10:02 AM (ImXfC) 106

Four men couldn’t get together and have fun like this today, of course.
Some feminist would insist backroom deals were being made and they had to include women in the group. If those four guys are having fun, I may have to reconsider my position on women invading male spaces. Normally, you have to attend a funeral to see such jollity. If I were to have one now, yes, that would be part of the "experience." In late 2018 I saw a 420 SEL online, an '87 or '88, for sale in Michigan, at a speciality dealer who kept the car indoors. Car and Driver Review of the 1980 XJ6
If possible, the XJ is both the Damascus blade and the silken scarf. It's smooth, effortless, and quiet—except for some wind roar where the windshield pillars and the outside mirrors come together—and it goes like a scalded dog. It is a truly luxurious sedan that should never, ever be driven at less than 80 miles per hour, especially on twisty, uneven two-lane pavement. If your first drive in an XJ is on a relatively smooth Interstate highway you'll love the interior of the Jag and gain the impression that it's about like any other fine car going down the road. If, on the other hand, your first XJ experience is on the above-mentioned twisty two-lane, you'll be stunned. The Jaguar tears across the nastiness just as quickly and safely as any big-buck German car; but it doesn't attack like the broadsword, it slips through like the Damascus blade. "Swift" is the word that comes to mind. You are not urged on with battle cries and exhortations; you are seduced. Posted by: Its Go Time Donald at July 17, 2025 10:23 AM (ImXfC) 165

This picture is among the most original works to have been produced in England in the first half of the eighteenth century, maintaining the intimate atmosphere of a small conversation piece in a life-size group portrait. Highmore painted it at the request of Nathaniel Oldham to commemorate a dinner party held at Oldham's home, to which he had arrived belatedly. According to the author and antiquarian, John Thomas Smith (1766-1833), who heard the story from his father, who had at one time owned the picture and was himself the godson of Mr Oldham:
Mr Oldham had invited three friends to dine with him at his house at Ealing; but being a famous and constant sportsman he did not arrive till they had dined; and then he found them so comfortably seated with their pipes over a bowl of negus, that he commissioned Highmore to paint the scene and desired that he might be introduced in it just as he then appeared (quoted in Einberg and Egerton 1988, p.47). A couple of comments to follow up on remarks about Scott prior, modern American artist:
Madamemayhem: I recently acquired a print Scott's 'bottles' still lifes, named Summer Flowers. You should reach out to him -- a very nice gentleman. Others on Nannette: her portrait sitting in a bathrobe on her porch drinking tea with their Golden looks just like my wife did 30 years ago. Bulg: Look closed. Gunsmoke's demise came with hour long episodes, color, and storylines that repeateadly had Miss kitty beaten, kidnapped or raped and Matt riding for personal vengeance instead of stalwartly standing up for the law.
********* Gunsmoke's decline started in the late 60s when it transitioned from "Matt Dilllon: Frontier Lawman" to "Matt Dillon: Social Worker". All the hairstyles shifted to 70s Partridge Family cuts and sideburns. Except Miss Kitty's, which just got higher each year. Quint Asper was bridged the gap during the interregnum between Chester Goode and Festus Haggen. Around season 9. Chester and Festus were seen together in a small handful of episodes during the transition. The series really went downhill when "Thad Greenwood: Soyboy in a Blouse" became a regular. Prometheus, Ridley Scott’s 2012 sci-fi epic. Most people didn’t get it. That’s fine. They’re not supposed to. But me? I think it’s one of the most misunderstood cinematic achievements of the 21st century.
What Prometheus does, what it dares to do, is ask a question most films are too afraid to raise, let alone answer: What if our creators weren’t gods... but engineers? Cold. Calculating. Flawed. Just like us. It's existential horror in an immaculate aesthetic wrapper. The film’s set design? Impeccable. It’s like Giger and Kubrick had a genetically perfect baby, and that baby was baptized in shadow and bioluminescence. Posted by: Thomas Bender at July 17, 2025 10:50 AM (XV/Pl) 221

And then there’s David. Oh, David. Fassbender’s android is nothing short of a Nietzschean übermensch. He wants to create because he can.
He poisons a man just to see what happens. That’s not evil. That’s science without the burden of morality. That’s... purity. That’s ambition. People criticize the characters. “Why do scientists take off their helmets? Why touch the alien snake?” Because that’s the point, hubris. Curiosity. The same things that built Rome, launched Apollo 11, and destroyed Troy. It's a mirror. And most people are too afraid to look into it. Posted by: Thomas Bender at July 17, 2025 10:51 AM (XV/Pl) 224

Prometheus isn’t just a movie. It’s a descent into the womb of human arrogance.
A meditation on origin and annihilation. And it’s beautifully, disturbingly... clean. Like a scalpel. Like a suit that still smells like the tailor's fingers.
