I had some more modern "art" ready to go for today, and it was a particularly ridiculous example. But you were measured and clever and amusing yesterday, so I will hold off!

Maybe I should buy a box of "Liv-A Snaps" as treats for you maniacs. Does anyone remember them? My parents once gave us a taste of them.

It might just be the kind of "nose-painting" that comes from too much wine and other adult beverages, of course.

The guy on the right holding the bowl looks sort of like Nixon, or actor Dan Hedaya (you'll remember him as Carla' ex-husband on Cheers). In any event, he looks stunned, as if Mr. Oldham has just told him he has bought the guy's house out from under him, and the stunned guy has twenty-four hours to pack up and leave.

Darn, I didn't even notice the clay pipe.

You can still buy and smoke clay pipes -- and they are not pricey -- but they have the drawback that they are, as you might expect, fragile. I keep meaning to add one to my collection. But I'd have to make sure it's safe from the cats.

Looks like a clay "tavern" pipe. A public pipe.
Where the shaft is scored every so often. If one found themselves at a tavern without their pipe, they could "borrow" a public pipe, break off the tip at a score mark and use it. Next guy that came along would repeat the process.

Not so you'd notice. She does like to climb up to the back of the couch behind my head. Occasionally she'll lick or nibble my hair from there as if I were one of the kittens she never had. But she did that before I had my surgery too.

50 I like the artist's skill with detail and skin tones. The way he captures the bowl, the pipe, and liquid is excellent. In this one I especially like the expression on the man second from the right: directed at Oldham and showing a sense of amusement. But some of the proportions feel off. The figure on the far right seems scrunched up. (He also reminds me of Richard Nixon.) Oldham's head looks like it was added at a later time.

Not one I would hang but it is worthy of study for his brushwork and color choices.

One of my favorite pubs in London is right on the Thames. It used to get its supplies via boat, and it has a tiny patio over the water. It's 450 years old, so I will bet some of those pipes came from its patrons.

With classics like that it’s part of ownership. Not just Jags but anything. Any car 35,40+ years old is going to be a steady stream of shit to replace/fix. Go into it with that in mind and it’s enjoyable to own. Think of the cost as an entertainment fee. And it would be your primary car so even if it is unreliable, so what?

Jaguars from the 70s and 80s are beautiful cars. I’ve thought of getting one myself.

True. Though my '86 Mercedes S-Class was solidly reliable -- but it was only thirteen when I bought it and about eighteen when it was totaled, so it was no forty-year-old vehicle. If I were to have one now, yes, that would be part of the "experience."

In late 2018 I saw a 420 SEL online, an '87 or '88, for sale in Michigan, at a speciality dealer who kept the car indoors. The photos even of the undercarriage looked great. $4500. Yes it's true. I watch a charming mother daughter team of mudlarkers that have a channel on YouTube. Kit and Kaboodlers. They have mentioned needing a permit for the Thames in London. Never said if one needs a permit for other locations. They find those clay pipe bowls all the time.
