First World Problems...

closed2025.jpg

Closed? Sure, even the best shops close. And this is a great butcher, so I guess they are entitled.

But...it's going to be closed for a month. A Month! Not for maintenance. Not for illness in the family.

No. It's their summer vacation!

They sell perhaps the best pork I have ever had, so this isn't a casual observation of the difference in work ethic and cultural views of the work/life balance between America and France.

No...this is an existential crisis!

[Below the fold is why it is a catastrophe!]

I wonder if "new" Europe (Poland, CR, etc) take the same vacations. My guess, and that's all it is, is that they don't. That's why they're going to overtake "old" Europe economically.

I don't even know what they sell in the reputed best bakery in my town. They're only open on Tuesdays and Saturdays, they close when they run out -- usually around 1:30 -- and there's an eternal line out front that I've never been in the mood for. Oh yeah, the line goes down after maybe noon and you can walk in but it's all dark bread and stuff that I don't want.

Maybe I'll join the line early some morning and make my way into the shop to see what all the fuss is about.

95 JQ--

We just had a water leak in the service line repaired this week. Our water company alerted us to the problem while they were checking leaks in their system. Mercifully it was before we ran up a big bill but we still had to shut off the water until it could be repaired.

Miraculously our regular plumbers were available the next morning and by lunchtime we were back on line. It actually turned out to be a blessing because they discovered several different problems and were able to fix them all on one service all.

But, yes, a definite PITA.

Built-up is when the roofing is multiple laters of tar-paper and hot mopped asphalt.

Flat roofing can also be modified bituminous, HDPE, PVC, etc.

100 I have a city owned tree about 5 feet from my service shutoff and meter. I've noticed the meter has moved a bit over the years. I mention this to a city water guy at a open house where he has a meter they had to cut out with roots wrapped around it.
"That's probably about what mine looks like."
"Well we need to get out there and fix that."
I'm still waiting. It'll be cool because they're going to have to take out one of the two trees I need to take out to get the old manufactured house off the lot and put a new one on.
Save me probably $10,000.
I hope anyway.

You don't have to replace the whole line. They can did out that one spot and replace the leaking spot. According to the condition of the pipe determination can be made whether to replace all the line.
How long you intend to stay there is a consideration.

104 I need to call a plumber, I guess.. ?

I'm in no shape to be digging up the yard. Water line is down about 2 or 3 feet and, iirc, not at all in a straight line from meter to house.

Hubs hit it once with a trencher, when we were adding power to the shop. Didn't expect it to be *there* but we were able to patch it ourselves.

Posted by: JQ at July 13, 2025 02:51 PM (rdVOm)

105 The utility companies offer insurance coverage for water leaks and gas leaks because they aren't responsible once the service exits their service line. Cost about 15-17 a month for both. I just got the water line insurance since the cost of repair between the meter and where the water enters my house would be about 8-9k to dig up and repair/replace ( under concrete)

115 Not that this information is particularly useful for anyone here, but I have a report on my California-initiated FWP that I complained about this past spring. Because everything causes cancer in California, my favorite sensitive-skin shower gel was reformulated. Fortunately, the new formula, which has eight ingredients vs. the old one with five, is still mild, non-irritating, and clean-rinsing. Last time they reformulated under duress, their (temporary) formula change included a preservative that can cause allergic reactions. Fortunately, they were "allowed" to revert to their previous formula after that fiasco.

Anyway, the shower gel is AFM SafeChoice Shampoo and Body Wash. In the meantime, I discovered that I can tolerate plain beef tallow soap.

I wish California would leave the rest of us alone.

123 I always get a kick out of the productivity comparisons between the US and the EU. They will always say that the US has a tiny lead in that category, but if you keep reading, you will see that their comparison usually has a modifier applied to address the "hiatus" that is common in the EU. Hours worked isn't an affectation. It's a key component of productivity.

So, essentially, what they're saying that the US is more productive than the EU (even if you skew the numbers to modify work hours), and the US absolutely crushes the EU on productivity if you are being honest.

181 I've watched brisket videos where the final stage of the cook is to add big gobs of beef tallow as the meat is wrapped in butcher paper.

I have a rain bird residential system.

Posted by: polynikes at July 13, 2025 03:55 PM (VofaG)

183 I've been replacing them with Rainbird commercial heads that are only a few bucks more but are 10 times better built.

For the past several years I’ve been using an expensive water timer that has worked great for two years and then would crack when I put it in for the third year.

This year I replaced it with a Rainbird. Don’t know yet if it’s going to last beyond two years, but (a) it feels a lot hardier, and (b) it was a lot cheaper.

No controlling it remotely, but I came back Friday after being gone three weeks to find a bumper crop of hot red peppers. Going to make a very hot relish in a few days.

184 Yes sir, when Plumber was putting in new sewer line he whacked the irrigation pipe. Pipe? It wasn't even schedule 40.

There's a lot of prayers being sent even if people aren't posting.

Many of us have been there....sadly.

Yeah, I've never understood that. Why let go of it in the first place?
Trim the brisket, you gots extra fat. Overcook it or cook too fast, you lose fat, then add it back?
I save our tallow for other things.

===============

Well, that's already happened. Something more along the lines of kickbacks or a no-work, high-pay sinecure in the city bureaucracy should Cuomo win.

If your concern it the garden or flower bed it's ATC bluestrip for the win. Attach the timer to the faucet run the line and little tubes to each plant with emitters emitting the specific amount of water you choose.

199 This is gonna sound craycray, but I made a couple of dowsing rods and walked the green patch in my yard.

They crossed in 'likely' places, without my deliberate intervention. They crossed as I walked over *known* irrigation pipes, as a test.

It's nice to narrow-down to a foot wide, from 10ft wide area!!

I may start digging in the morning. I know the pipe can't be very deep there. And if I don't find it? Will call around for a pro to take over.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Or saved.
