Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | James Gunn's Superman No Longer Fights for "The American Way," but "the Human Way;" He and His Brother Both Say the Movie Is About How Vital Immigrants Are to Our CountrySuperman is a character I want to like more than I like. I'm a traditionalist who likes old pulp characters, and I like Americana. I was hoping this movie might be good. I hear some saying it's good, and some saying it's bad, but it sounded like I'd be in the camp of people that like it. The movie is cartoony and inspired by the goofy, anything-goes ethos of the Silver Age of comic books, which sounds good to me. Apparently the movie makes the case that Superman's real strength isn't his physical power but his simple goodness and moral strength, which sounds nice to me. I'm tired of Dark and Gritty Super-Heroes for Children. But then these repulsive Hollywood perverts had to open their leftist mouths.James Gunn changes Superman's catchphrase from 'Truth, Justice, and the American Way' to 'Truth, Justice, and the Human Way': reportI know America isn't popular among foreign degenerates, so I would understand if they made this change in foreign versions of the film. Hollywood routinely makes American versions of films that push politics -- like gays kissing in cartoons for children -- that it takes out of the export versions. Why can't that be done here? But apparently Gunn doesn't want to say that the American Way is worth fighting for even in America -- his lefty friends of course hate America -- so not even in the American version can we hear that America is good. James Gunn's nepo baby brother Sean Gunn, who appears in every single Gunn movie like Clint Howard gets an easy paycheck in every Ron Howard movie, says that the movie is "about how we support immigrants and if you don't like it, you're not American." Sold. I mean, you've sold me into the position of "No Sale. Go fuck yourselves.
I immediately rewatched the whole movie and enjoyed it again. Then I bought the French remake and watched that. The French remake, Coupez! ("Cut!"), is by the same director who did the OSS 117 movies and stars his wife, who played the female lead in the first OSS movie. The budget is higher (but it's still not a big budget movie). Even though the French version may sound like it would be better than the cheaper original, it's not. The Japanese original is just better in almost every way. I think the French version goes a little too over the top and lacks the relative subtlety of the Japanese version. (Which is kind of surprising.) I think the French director didn't like how slow and clumsy the Japanese version was in the early going, and tried to correct that by adding more punch. But it didn't work for me. The awkward, clumsy opening of the Japanese movie turned out to be the right way to do it. It's too bad, because the French Coupez! can be bought on Amazon for like five bucks while it costs five bucks just to rent One Cut of the Dead. It was produced by Shudder so it might be available on that streaming channel for no cost (assuming you subscribe or sign up for a teaser trial, which of course you'll forget to cancel). I liked -- almost loved -- this movie, but be prepared to feel like I did during my first watch, thinking this is the worst movie you've ever seen and that I must be a moron for saying otherwise. Hold off judgment until the third act. In terms of gore or objectionable material: There's really not a lot of gore, or, there's not any gore that's convincing. It all looks half-baked and on-the-cheap. I don't recall much in the movie that would bother any viewer. Update: It looks like you can watch "One Cut of the Dead" for free on Hoopla.Oh, I never even heard of "Hoopla." If you have Hoopla, give it a try. Anything you guys can recommend? Stellan Skarsgaard has caused some waves because he said that Ingmar Bergman was a literal Nazi who cried the day that Hitler died. But, I can advise for British TV fans, find the Forgotten British Television channel. Lots of 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's British TV series. Currently about to finish watching the Bulman Trilogy. Palfrey of Westminster, Warship, Squadron, and other forgotten series are also on it and many of them have been enhanced by modern digital techniques to overcome old smeared looking video of the originals. Posted by: rickb223 at July 11, 2025 04:22 PM (8v2yu) The most darkly amusing part of the whole situation (I've read a lot on the subject beyond just watching the documentary), is how cocky Stockton Rush (the now-squished CEO) was about everything. Guy missed his calling as a politician. "Hey, Stockton, I think this thing is going to implode" "I don't need that negativity around here, you're fired!" He was like a cartoon villain. During the investigation, multiple of the engineers (who defended the project) were asked by the NTSB if they would have gone on that sub, and all of them when pressed were like "well, you know... I also saw Laroy, Texas on a United flight last weekend. It was enjoyable. Campy, very Texas country, but fun and a good story. Steve Zahn was great in it. Think Bernie, which I liked; not as NC-17 as Killer Joe but that kinda Texas flick; Small Town Crime (which I also liked) is similar, though this one's Texas and that was non-descript small town Utah. Yeah, if all immigrants loved their new countries and their customs and language more than the places that they came from and wanted to be prototypically British/American rather than Peruvian/Kryptonian, people would love immigrants a whole lot more.
Posted by: TheJamesMadison, searching for thrills with John Frankenheimer at July 11, 2025 04:27 PM (GBKbO) That's my working theory on why people let this immigration situation get so out of control. Mexicans are typically super nice people with a similar culture to ours who typically like us and want to be a part of the US and can and do assimilate. Even the Mexicans in Mexico are like that. Super friendly, proud of their culture, but view themselves as part of the a larger "North American" culture. Our newest New Americans (from Muslim countries, India and Asia) -- not so much. But uh, we still have way too many amigos in this country, so unfortunately many will have to leave. Posted by: Harry Paratestes at July 11, 2025 04:31 PM (uCjyK) 75

I saw Superman in an advance screening Tuesday night. I am aware of the comments Gunn and others have made regarding the film, but the actual movie presents a very different view of “immigration” than is being reflected in the online arguments about the movie. Yes, Superman is the survivor of a catastrophe and a refugee who was adopted by the Kents as an infant. This has always been his story. The movie goes to great links to show how much he has assimilated to our nation and world, even going so far to suggest that where he came from maybe wasn’t that such of a great place to begin with. Superman tangentially is about immigration, but it is the broader idea of immigration that is at the heart of this country. The politics of the film are presented in such a way that whatever your political views are, you could graft them onto the movie. In other words, they matter very little to the story. There are no cheap shots against conservatives, no girlboss moments, and a general message of being kind and looking for the best in others. The movie itself is a love letter to the Superman of the Silver Age of comics, and if you enjoyed the trailers you will probably enjoy the movie.

The review I linked above includes a spoiler - it says one of the (female!) secondary "heroes" straight up murders one of the minor villains. A little skeevy to me since this seems to be a new trend. Not arguing your general impression, but it doesn't encourage me to see the movie after the douchey comments by the Gunns, let alone the tidbit I mention. I wonder if Elric's on to something: >>> 16 == I continue to believe they've seen something that's got them spooked on the potential box office, and this is battlespace prep to try to pre-spin an underperforming result. Posted by: Blonde Morticia at July 11, 2025 04:40 PM (UmB+t) It was never going to be cheap, getting out to the Titanic's location with a ship big enough to move and recover the sub, the ships crew, an entire support staff for the sub, etc. is the prohibitively expensive part. You could do it with a smaller support ship using carbon fiber, since it was light in comparison to metal. But I doubt he was making any money even at $250,000 a head. Afternoon, folken,
After a tough morning (more on that anon), I could use a nice movie-related thread. Thanks, Ace! I am very disappointed in Charlize Theron. Not for picking up a 26-year-old; for talking about it in public, and in such gutter language. And the "I'm glad I don't have to run everything past some man." Is every H'wood celebrity infected with that attitude, or is it just every one who makes it into general media? If the new Superman flick is Silver Age-styled, I'll give it a try. I loved the Christopher Reeve films, I and II anyway, for having just that sort of flavor. I don't mind the "human way" stuff because Superman, in the Silver Age comics I grew up on, was always shown to be a literal citizen of the world -- I recall being told in one story, or an editorial comment, that he had been given citizenship in every country on Earth. "Human Way" does not wipe out "American Way," not if the "human way" includes morals and kindness. If the film starts explicitly bashing America, though . . . I remember Sean Gunn in a lot of Gilmore Girls episodes. I didn't know he was related to James Gunn. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at July 11, 2025 04:44 PM (omVj0) 160

My morning looked to be rough, and yet I survived. As we prepared to take big black Stirling to the vet, the Buick refused to start. It gave me "Battery Saver Mode Activated," and displayed some Linux code (!) on the instrument panel.
AAA diagnosed it as "merely" a weakened battery, not a problem with alternator or voltage regulator, and got the car running. We canceled Stirling's appointment and drove a long ways to a Walmart, charging the battery. Everything has been fine. I'll buy a new one -- this one is 2.5 years old -- after I'm recovered from my surgery next week. So, not a good start to my Friday. This news about the Superman film is heartening. John Nolte has an intriguing take on the new Superman movie: that's it's subversively conservative by sheer accident. (Sort of how Joss Whedon accidentally made a subversively conservative show with Firefly.)
Spoiler alert for one of the hugest plot twists, incoming... *spoiler* "...And this is where dumb-ass Gunn accidentally goes full MAGA...the movie ends up explicitly sending the following message: Superman is a good man for only one reason--he was raised by Normal People (Ma and Pa Kent) in middle America (a Kansas Farm) where he was ASSIMILATED into this good man using traditional values and Western values. Had he been influenced by the imported Kryptonian values of conquer and rule (which sound an awful lot like some of the unassimilated third world barbarians that have been allowed into America), the world would've been doomed. In other words, diversity is not our strength, says SUPERMAN. Instead, our strength comes from a unified culture tha believes in freedom and the importance of every human life."" Wish Nolte's movie stuff wasn't all behind a stupid paywall. More people need to see his messages on the culture, instead of preaching only to the conservative choir. The "Midnight's Edge" guy on YouTube said that an obnoxious reporter was trolling, saying "so this is really about immigration right right right???" And James Gunn's brother bit on the bait, but Gunn himself just said something like "it's more about kindness".
I don't think this is going to be woke. The Film Threat guys basically like it. They rated it, respectively, 6.5 and 7.5 out of 10. They also predicted it will blow up huge among teen boys. I like the idea that this is just jumping in to a universe full of superheroes and supervillains, not rehashing Superman's origin story again. But it is apparently a young Superman, starting out his career, finding his place. We know from the trailer that he loses a fight, badly wounded, at some point. If handled well this will be a good hook for a plot, and I have liked other James Gunn movies so I am trusting him to do it well. I'm planning to see this in the theater. I watched the new Superman last night and I honestly enjoyed it. I don't recall ANY slogan making an appearance--not "Truth, Justice, and The American Way" and not some bastardization of it either.
No spoilers, I promise--but Superman seems to spend some time reflecting on his purpose, and what doing "right" is, but I didn't catch any overt messaging. Even the plot points that dealt with "technology country vs not-a-technology country" didn't purport to teach us anything that decent people wouldn't have already known. I enjoyed it, and I'm most assuredly to the right of most of "our" elected Republicans politically. Posted by: Crusader at July 11, 2025 04:56 PM (TN0g+) 205

Five British comedians doing stupid events, but the fun thing is that the prizes they win at the end of the episode are a collection of possessions that the contestants themselves bring in. So they win their item back, plus the items brought by the other four. Posted by: Stu Podaso at July 11, 2025 04:59 PM (M0V4/) 217
The Charlize Theron story reminds me of that minor scene in Mario Puzzo’s The Godfather (the book) where random men in Hollywood could go to a theater (probably not pr0n since this was set in the early 50s), and sit in the dark and watch a movie while aged-out movie actresses would sneak in and give them blowjobs.
The idea was these women had built their careers on the casting couch, gotten addicted to being desirable, but were now too old for that and not marriageable, so this scene was the only way they could feed that addiction. Posted by: Jack Squat Bupkis at July 11, 2025 04:59 PM (jYRYu) 218

Instead of wrongly imprisoned Vietnam Vets, they're actually a group of women and trans activists who were wrongly accused of trying to kill an ICE agent, but escaped from jail with the help of "Howlin' Mad Murdaugh" who is actually a butch lesbian with a shaved head. Mr. T is now Mx. T, and uses "xe / xim" pronouns, but keeps the name "Mister" to stick it to the patriarchy. Mr. T still drives a van, but this one is covered in a rainbow flag and has a stripper pole in the back in front of the cache of weapons. Last night watched a truly strange western, 'The Outrage'. Cast and plot rather bizarre, because:
"The Outrage is a 1964 American Western film directed by Martin Ritt and starring Paul Newman, Laurence Harvey, Claire Bloom, Edward G. Robinson and William Shatner. It is a remake of Akira Kurosawa's 1950 Japanese film Rashomon, based on stories by Ryūnosuke Akutagawa, adapted to an American setting." At the end I thought, 'What the hell did I just watch?' I didn't even consider serial/episodic productions. Those have become *vile.* Heinous. The movies are awful. But G-d forbid you watch one of those. Just buy a 4 pound hammer and smash it on your dick once a week (or 12 times a day if you're a binge watcher).

Lucien Wolfe@nuclear_zero1 . 31m They won’t say it publicly, but this isn’t about Bongino vs. Bondi. It’s about who controls the evidence. Back in 2018, Bondi was handed sealed access to Epstein’s metadata archives, including names, encrypted comms, and—most crucially—video footage. Not the client list. The kompromat. Bongino found out she wasn’t just withholding names— She was protecting assets. Assets that tie into foreign intel networks and a very specific island’s blackmail hub. That’s why he drew the line: Not because she’s “incompetent,” But because she’s untouchable. DOJ wanted her in. Trump didn’t block it. Bongino got the message. This isn’t a feud. It’s a silent war. Part 2: Why was Pam Bondi photographed entering Langley on a Sunday? Who’s she really working for? The graphic novels "All Star Superman" (1+2) are proof that you CAN make a good superman story. Highly recommended. Surprisingly moving. James Gunn stole some of the imagery and characters from those novels to make this film, which really pisses me off.

“The suggestion by anyone that there was any daylight between the FBI and DOJ leadership on this memo’s composition and release is patently false,” Blanche wrote." I believe it , since that is how it is done - all of them sign off on it. Posted by: runner at July 11, 2025 05:18 PM (g47mK) 309

I checked available sources, including recent news and social media, and found no specific mention or verified images of such an event. Without concrete evidence, this appears to be an unverified claim or rumor. Oh, I forgot to mention when I got home last night I watched a Western on GritTV where Ronald Reagan played a Confederate Officer who ultimately ends up ordering his troops to rescue an Union fort in the west that is about to be destroyed by a collection of Apache forces under the command of Cochise and Geronimo!
Once upon a time movies and books and comics still embraced the notion that not everything about the Confederacy was vile and unredeemable. Posted by: Crusader at July 11, 2025 05:20 PM (TN0g+) 318
217 The Charlize Theron story reminds me of that minor scene in Mario Puzzo’s The Godfather (the book) where random men in Hollywood could go to a theater (probably not pr0n since this was set in the early 50s), and sit in the dark and watch a movie while aged-out movie actresses would sneak in and give them blowjobs.
The idea was these women had built their careers on the casting couch, gotten addicted to being desirable, but were now too old for that and not marriageable, so this scene was the only way they could feed that addiction. "Anything you guys can recommend?" Finally saw "Sinners" and I gotta say I thought it was damn good. The director uses music in a really great way, and it's a lot of old Delta blues, which I love. Plus, vampires. Posted by: UGAdawg at July 11, 2025 04:58 PM (xP8uf) The movie itself is basically "Feast" or "Legion", or 60 other "humans barricade themselves in a single location to battle the Forces of Evil but totes not a rehash of Assault on Precinct 13" flicks. But the two big musical numbers, by the humans doing blues/rock/rap/jazz or the vampires doing country/Celtic Irish are absolutely amazing. Highly recommend F1, in fact, feel like it's being a bit overlooked (maybe because the creators haven't run around saying stupid things), so I'm recommending it to everybody!
Some might accuse it of some wokery, but it didn't come across like that to me. For example, the actress who played the Team therapist in Ted Lasso (she was excellently cast in that) plays the mother of the younger driver on the Team. It might be little unusual that a mom would travel around like that with her grown son, and one might think, oh this was just to get a black woman in the cast. But to me, she was a character I could relate to. And the score includes both old time rock classics, and some new rap-ish stuff that the young folks probably like & know. Feel like they put in A LOT of effort to make a crowd-pleasing movie. It is rated PG-13. There's a little sexy romance stuff and I suppose there's some bad words, but nothing overly offensive. Pretty long, but extremely well paced. I know nothing about racing, and really enjoyed it. Posted by: jocon307 at July 11, 2025 05:32 PM (EuROc) 330
