We confine our smaller dog when we open the door to strangers to keep them from trying to snuggle him (he was traumatized as a pup). The larger dog goes to the door with us (usually). Do you have a dog with whom you take any precautions around people?
![]() ![]() ![]() I've emailed the thread before about Lily (Sheltie) and Pinky (Silky Terrier). I'm sad to report that Miss Pinky passed on 4/30 and my life hasn't been the same since. She was my adventure buddy, car ride buddy, and morning walk buddy...she was a month shy of 18 years old. My life was better with that tiny little dog in it, and her absence is felt. I miss her terribly - without her to tell me what to do all day, I've been a little lost. Lily, as sweet as she is, didn't seem to care much that Pinks is gone, but she seems glad to get ALL of the hamburger I cook instead of just half. Attached is a picture of Pinks on my bean bag footstool she took over, taken a day before she lied down and wouldn't get back up. Thanks for letting me share a bit of Pinks, she is irreplaceable, the most special of special tiny dogs. My heart is broken. Lurker - Jerake75So sorry that you have lost Pinky. What a sweetheart. Hello Friends,
I have been trying to find a way to make sure the stray cat who lives at the disused car wash continues to be fed while I am on vacation in September. Think I have a couple of people at the YMCA tentatively on board. If I can get one more, that will take care of that. The other issue is Keiko, the gorgeous longhair calico who has been dropping by in the evenings and allowing me to feed her so long as I don't get too close. I think I can ask our cat sitter to put out dry food for her when she drops by. It's only every other day, but it should be enough. Posted by: Victor Tango Kilo at July 12, 2025 03:36 PM (DIweC) 9

Every day when I leave work, I use the excuse that I have to feed my kitties. Of course, I could feed them later, but they have gotten used to their normal feeding time between 4:30 and 5:00 p.m.

We lost Precious the bichon last Monday. We knew she might have a brain tumor but she wasn't in pain and we worked around her fading mobility. That morning she had four serious seizures in less than 90 minutes. The emergency vet confirmed our fears and we made the decision before she could suffer more.
Precious was already older than the usual bichon life expectancy when we adopted her two years ago, so every day with her was a gift. We really miss that little ragamuffin. Posted by: JTB at July 12, 2025 03:42 PM (yTvNw) 13

Afternoon, pet folken,
A grand bunch of animules today. I especially liked the feral mom cat and her three kittens. Dr No's presentation of his black cat on the pink/red chair has the quality of a painting rather than a photo. (Of course it might be a painting, in which case my face is about the same shade as the chair.) Stirling the great black cat, having had a stay regarding his vet appointment yesterday when my car's battery failed, was sleeping with me just now. He tends to do that nearly every afternoon. His stay had nothing to do with it. I don't know where little Dagny La Siberienne has gotten off to. Soon I need to take a current pic of her and send her kitten shot and the new one to KT, so you can all see how much she has filled out in a little under three years. I need horde advice. I have a lean cat and a chubby one. I don't mind my cat being chubby--she's adorable. But I'm aware of the danger of diabetes down the road. I don't want that.
The easy solution would be if I could feed the lean cat up high, since he is a good leaper, but his idea of eating is to scoop up a pawful and spread it around, then nibble. Big mess. The vet has recommended one of those electronic feeders that only responds to one collar. Has anyone had success with them? A brand to recommend? Posted by: Wenda at July 12, 2025 04:03 PM (8p/ok) 27

Posted by: Tuna at July 12, 2025 *** When Mrs. Wolfus No. 2 and I were visiting her grandparents in AZ, we asked her mother to go over and feed Arizona the big red tabby. Her mother swore that the cat took a stand on the stairs (it was a town house) and refused to let her climb to the second floor. Apparently he was very territorial. I bought cat treats to help keep Snowflake calm when she gets zoomy at night. She still wakes me up as soon as the sun comes up for feeding. I'm fine with that. I have a life to create.
I've been reading up on 'cat training.' Snowflake isn't much of a scratcher. I have her a big cat tree and a scratching post but she'd come in my room and go behind my LazyBoy and I'd hear clawing. Just once, I'd holler and she'd run. Instead of a water bottle which is cruel, I bought another scratching post and put it behind the chair. She likes that. And there's furniture strips bit I don't think I'll need them. Our last issue is jumping on the counters. It's too much. My friend suggested aluminum foil. Tried it. Didn't work. I think I'm going to get double sided tape for cats, put it on the foil and tape the foil to the counter. Hopefully that'll stop the jumping. Thank all of you for helping me with the cats. I'm staying at my sister's farm. Her pond is teeming with fish. They're not as easy to catch. A heron shows up occasionally. A deer strolled through earlier. Bats come out in the evening and chow down on mosquitos. There are owls but I only hear them. She took a pic over the winter with two Great Horned Owls on a tree. The sun had just set. Cool pic! Baby Dagny is asleep on the cushion in my desk chair, in the darkened bedroom. Often I can't find her, only to discover she's gotten shut into one of the closets when I leave the door open. She never cries to be let out and never does any damage. I guess she sort of likes enclosed spaces and trusts that I will let her out eventually.

From Popular Mechanice, a new cat color from Finland, "Salty Liquorice".
It's more than just a name. The Scandis LOVE salted licorice. In my NATO assignments, everyone takes turns bringing snacks from their coutry to share. A Danish officer I worked with in Kosovo loved giving Americans salted licorice and watching them retch. I developed a tolerance for it out of pride, so he bought a big bag of them for me: https://tinyurl.com/3dpuwt6z The Finns drop a few into a bottle to infuse with flavor before drinking it straight. We used to have elk herds now and then, circling the house, enjoying themselves in the gardens and patio. Maybe a dozen feet away.
Once when our dog needed to go out, I called the vet to ask how to handle it. She said deer were a problem, but she had never had a dog/elk incident. So we let him out. He was a Bouvier--a herding dog. He was in heaven. Trotting proudly back and forth, clearly saying, My herd. The elk didn't mind. Posted by: Wenda at July 12, 2025 05:26 PM (8p/ok) 66

I've had a number of bad experiences with feral cats and the people who enable them.
Think of cat ladies so irresponsible that they dump their fetish on a neighborhood. I don't think people would approve of wild dogs running around. These are not pets, they are wild animals. Pet's need to be socialized. If you have them around they are eating the birds. lots of them. All the time. Don't kid yourself. It was time for bed last night and I decided to treat my dog and let him out for one last run around the yard. Mistake. He found a rabbit that the cat had left on the porch. I don't know if it was a gift or if the cat left it there and intended to return and eat it. Regardless, it now belonged to the dog.
He carried it around for awhile, then finally ate it. I sat up and waited for him and waited to be sure he didn't have to puke it up and eat it again, like the last one. So, I ended up staying up an extra hour and a half so he could get a belly full of bunny. It's his third rabbit this year, thanks to his feline brother. @ 25 Afternoon, pet folken,
A grand bunch of animules today. I especially liked the feral mom cat and her three kittens. Dr No's presentation of his black cat on the pink/red chair has the quality of a painting rather than a photo. (Of course it might be a painting, in which case my face is about the same shade as the chair.) ______________________________________ Thankee kindly, Mr Wolfus - but: that's not my cat. I found it sleeping (or resting) on the chair arm somewhere on Dauphine Street in the Bywater District (not far from where the F Edward Hebert Hospital used to be). I don't think a nuke would have disturbed that cat's slumber ... it was an interesting 'found' composition, tho'.
