Medical Adventures in Wolfus-Land, Part I: Yesterday I sat at the surgical office, waiting for my simple pre-op blood work and EKG, for almost three hours . . . only for them to tell me apologetically they were swamped and unable to do those two that day. So here I am heading over to the nearby hospital for that; 7 am appt. I just hope I won't have to sit around for a long time again.
If I get away at a reasonable time, I'll head over to a nearby diner for some breakfast, or a coffee shop for a latte and a ham & cheese croissant. Or even if I don't get away quickly. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at July 08, 2025 05:15 AM (omVj0) 33

Shipwreckedcrew @shipwreckedcrew The House should immediately move to impeach Judge Talwani. She usurped the power of Congress today. She told Congress they could not reverse by legislation a spending program that Congress had previously established. The complaint is phrased as if the Trump Administration is to blame, and this is simply pushback against POTUS overreach. But this is a Congressional statute. Her TRO directing that she dictate disbursements from the Treasury, not Congress, has no legal rationale offered -- none. It is simply a naked power grab by her. Impeachment by the Judiciary Committee should be fast and simple. Then send it over to the Senate. Posted by: olddog in mo at July 08, 2025 05:32 AM (hoCmQ) 42

@79/Just Wondering: "Birdbath status?"
As of late, I've been seeing this daily post, and my line of thought goes something like this: 1) It's summer here but it's winter where Pixy is. 2) I remember the response being "Frozen!" one day during our winter season. 3) My mind jumps to the memory of the movie "Logan's Run" and the interrogation of Logan 5 by the computer at the end, as it tries to find out details about his investigation into the runners and the existence of "Sanctuary". The computer engages Logan 5's "surrogates" during the questioning. The second surrogate answers "All Frozen!" in response to "You were assigned to find missing runners. State what you found." https://youtu.be/q0Amt30_QVQ&t=55 So now, nomatter what the weather is here in North America, I see that "Birdbath Status?" question, and all I can hear is "All Frozen!" These are the silly little things that amuse me. Posted by: Grumpy and Recalcitrant at July 08, 2025 06:49 AM (O7YUW) 87
My local Fox outlet has a sob story about the Haitians and other "visitors" who've been in the US under "temporary protected status" since 2006, some since 1998. _________ I call stories like that "weepies". They dredge up some single mom or poor elderly couple to front for the massive fraud of some program. Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh at July 08, 2025 06:49 AM (JYHZO) 88

Orange Ent,
Thanks for the Kim DuToit reference. It was nice to know a little bit more about JSND. I agree with M. Poppins, Jim didn't look at all like I thought he would. If anyone knows a little bit more about Ciampino, it'd be great if they'd post it. I always liked hearing about his growing up and going to school in Africa. 86 @79/Just Wondering: "Birdbath status?"
State what you found." https://youtu.be/q0Amt30_QVQ&t=55 So now, nomatter what the weather is here in North America, I see that "Birdbath Status?" question, and all I can hear is "All Frozen!" What I don’t understand about immigration issues is the reluctance of immigrants to assimilate and be naturalized citizens. What’s the hold up? You’ve been here for 10,15, 20 years. I don’t think their home country is going to ever magically be better than the US.
And if we don’t enforce immigration laws why even have them? The left seems to be grown up children who want all benefits and no consequences. It’s maddening. I also get tired of the attitude from out of touch white people who want to import from third world shit hole countries and expect them to magically change because they’ve touched our soil. Maybe a few people truly have what it takes. We had a do-gooder org here in our small midwestern town that imported some Somalians through a US immigration group, a dad mom and 2 kids. They stayed here 3 months during which time dad did some random manual labor at our meat packing plant and then a bike shop. When they left town to live in a 3 families in a 1 family apartment in NY, they left the apartment loaned to them a disaster. It was like animals with no ability to clean lived there. My friend, a well educated liberal, was so surprised and sad it didn’t work out. Posted by: H at July 08, 2025 07:28 AM (2gjbv) 112

Beloved commenter JT (Hiya!) would frequently state that his birdbath was frozen during the depths of winter.
JT is no longer able to comment because of something medical, and I pray often he will be restored to his rightful place here among the gray boxes. As a person who lives alone I figure it would be good to tell someone in the world I woke up this morning and acknowledge that, frozen or not, I'd like to know about the status of dear JT's birdbath, in case he's reading along. 13.5% of scientific papers from 2024 are written at least partly using AI.
I don't know if that is a Good Thing or Bad Thing. 13.5% is it Good because AI is coming into its own as its developers predict, or is it Bad because the number should be higher? Or is the Good/Bad reversed because we don't AI generating scientific papers, just replacing menial jobs? Or is it neither Good/Bad, just a data point and its ethically gray?
