  • Why AI sucks. (Dwarkesh)

    Because it doesn't learn.

Specifically, current large language models are not designed to acquire and verify new facts and to discard old one that turned out to be incorrect, or to adopt new modes of though that streamline reasoning.

They are trained, once, and then left to slowly rot until they are replaced.

Interesting comments on this article too: Arguing about when AI will replace humanity and then admitting that nobody really knows anything and it will probably never happen.

4 A more realistic and enjoyable video about AI: John Carmack talks about creating a system to learn how to play Atari 2600 games. This includes a camera and a mechanical system to use the joystick. So rather than a task talking to an emulator, they set out to create something that had to approach the old Atari game console the same way as a human.

Good morning all and one (and you know who YOU are)!

We had an excellent Independence Day weekend. On the fishing front, our neighbor went out fishing for tuna on Saturday nearly seventy miles offshore. They came back with three Yellowfin Tuna, the largest being fifty pounds, and six Mahi-mahi. The local gulls had themselves a rral feast during the time spent cleaning and splitting up the catch.

We got our prep work done to allow us to install mooring whips for our boat. We also finally got our shower repaired, a task which required us to fix and install not one, but two valves. And I installed a support piece to counteract sagging of the shelves in our cabinet over our bar -- glass pitchers for blenders were doing their best to collapse the whole arrangement.

I'm back up north now to gave my car serviced (brakes and other items) ahead of getting it ibspected and registered this month. If I can do so, I'll also acquire a new pair of work boits with steel shanks as I have a lot of work involving use of shovels in my future. I return to Sussex tomorrow if everything goes according to plan.

17 Local fireworks dealers blame the tariffs on short supply. You wouldn't know that by all the local fireworks going off. I remember when they were US made, are any made in the US anymore? My local town tries to ban fireworks, good luck with that, call out the national guard, state troopers, shut off all local streets? Another unenforceable law.

81 When Trump dropped the EV tax credit as part of his dealing to get the BBB passed it amounted to an assault on Tesla stock price, and Tesla stock was pledged by Musk to borrow money for the Twitter deal, and it has funded Neuralink, the Boring Company and probably his other investments. I imagine Musk saw that EV credit drop as a huge threat to Tesla cash flow and stock value, and as a betrayal.

89 Kroger delivered my MIL's order to the house next door and they kept it, no questions asked. Kroger resent the order. What a way to find out what assholes your neighbors are.

We went to an Aldi for the first time last Friday. It reminded me of a flea market. They had one checkout lane open and a line to the back of the store. No self checkout. We dumped the few items we had and left. Won't be back.
Posted by: fd at July 07, 2025 06:13 AM (vFG9F)

The delivery thing may have been store policy. Neighbors may have called it in to the store, who instructed them to keep the stuff because the store doesn't want the liability involved with food going outside their "chain of custody". Let's say the neighbors *really* are assholes, and lick all the donuts or whatever.... Kroger would rather eat the cost of the delivery than be exposed to a massive potential lawsuit.

Just a thought, not saying it isn't just as likely that they're just assholes

LLMs, ie AI, are not thinking machines, they are probabilistic engines, the amount of horsepower and storage it would take to make them, "thinking" machines would be staggering.

Having said that, as a someone who uses multiple on a daily basis, they are supremely useful for very specific workflows.
