I’m barely 150 pages in a 933 page book -recommended earlier - Blacklisted by History by M. Evans, about Senator Joseph McCarthy
It’s a great read. One thing I’m immediately struck by is how similar the events and chicken shit back then and today. Like say, Peter Stroke getting his pension re-instated after being fired for cause. If you read the Wiki on a fellow named John Service, he was a diplomat stationed in China before the war. Wiki says he “correctly predicted the Communists would defeat the Nationalists” Well, yes. Since he had a profound impact on making this happen - not too tough of a prediction. He made that happen. Eventually the Secretary of State, Dean Acheson fired him. Supreme Court re-instated him. Same BS, different day. The book is replete (so far) of really, really fvcked up shit. The Balkans were another. They supported Tito over a guy named Michailovich, who was both anti-Nazi and anti-Communist. If you have Uk, US, and Russia on your side, good to go. Michailovich was rounded up, show trial, executed. Posted by: Common Tater at July 09, 2025 10:12 PM (ds7a/) 47

The number of people that confuse "two plus two" - or "what size is a 2 x 4" is much, much bigger. Hence why you have all these Mexicans here. Hundreds of General Mills balloons carrying reconnaissance equipment were launched by the United States government under Project Genetrix to surveil Eastern bloc countries and their nuclear capabilities.
One of the points in the Oppenheimer movie that Nolan really didn't do justice is when they find out the Soviets had set off their own nuclear test. Oppenheimer's rival, Lewis Strauss, who is presented as a jealous jerk in the movie, was the guy who had pushed for this when the consensus by Oppenheimer and his associates was that it wouldn't work and the Soviets were far from building their own bomb anyway. This was from fixed wing aircraft not balloons, but your note reminded me of it... Posted by: 18-1 at July 09, 2025 10:15 PM (t0Rmr) 55

I had fortunate good luck to see The Brian Setzer Orchestra during their first tour in 1990s and then many times after. I think the last time was in 2019.
It was a marvel to hear the 20th breadth of American music played with apex skill. Without a doubt that band went far in making clear that what they performed was a pinnacle moment of American classical music: we don't need no Mozart, we gots Rock n' Roll. In February, 2025 he announced that an auto-immune disease had robbed his ability play guitar. A month or so later, after beginning treatment, he felt that he was going to be able to play again, hopefully in the not to distant future. I monitor his progress with hopes that I can be there when that band blows minds once again. Heck, I would drive 1000 miles to hear that band again and will if that happens. And you should too. For reals. This is the band I saw the first time. Damn. Big win on the washing machine front today. I had replaced the pump, which was leaking, last month, but the damned machine was still leaking onto the basement floor. Today I took the cover off, and tried to operate it without the cover. Soon as the drum began to fill, water appeared on the floor. Upon closer inspection, I found the corrugated hose from the pump outlet to the drain line had been chafing on the cement floor, and worn through three adjacent corrugations. I cut the bad part out of the hose, and went to the garage. Found a piece of thick-walled transparent plastic hose that was exactly the right I.D. to fit the nipple on the pump, and the cut stub of the hose going to the drain. Installed that, clamped it up, turned on machine. Drum fills, no leaks, woo-hoo! Put cabinet back on machine, did load of laundry, floor stayed dry.

The PPSh-41, the basic sub-machine gun of the Red Army in WWII, had drum mags, but given the quality control and conditions of production, most drums would only fit certain guns. So when a new shipment came in, time was spent matching mags to guns. Stick mags were also popular, and more reliably, and the main mag used in the follow-on sub-gun.
One day a few years back a young-ish Russian immigrant guy had a DP-27, the Red Army's light machine gun, which he'd welded back together from a kit. Semi-auto, of course. He had the pan magazines for it, he was testing his 54R reloads for gun function. He said the pan mags worked well but usually troops loaded them a few rounds short of max capacity, which works with most mags to improve reliability. I recall going east to DC and of course giving up on Mex, but was happy to see Vietnamese going strong in NoVa. Posted by: BourbonChicken at July 09, 2025 11:25 PM (lhenN) Yeah, he mentioned something about his hands feeling like they're waaaay bigger, and it screws him up. I know a little about that. If I'm sitting in a wrong chair where my wrist is bent too much because the guitar is too low my hand goes numb, and feels like its twice the size. Its impossible to play, because your targeting is out the window. You press the wrong strings because you can't feel the strings. I can at least correct that by standing with a strap like I'm used to for decades, or sitting in the right chair. He on the other hand is totally fucked. What a shitty thing to happen to a guitar player. I watch RA steal the guitar from my father at the worst time. He is a shell of his former self. Posted by: NemoMeImpuneLacessit We are blessed. Hatch, NM, 30 miles north of LC, is the premier spot for chiles. On labor day they throw a Chile Festival where tons of green chiles are roasted. It is not rare to see peeps go home with a 100 lbs of fresh roasted green chiles. The red chiles are the same plant but they are allowed ripen all the way which turns them red. So red or green? It depends on the dish. Chile Colorado is always red. Green seems to be the go to for most other dishes but you can always get red or Christmas. One can order online from the stores in Hatch. You typically can get red and green in powder (I get medium and hot and blend them) or green in jars (most convenient). The best green after fresh roasted is frozen (I think some places ship those - not sure). There really is a difference. It is the varieties grown, the soil, and the climate. Equally important is the local knowledge about how to grow them and how to read the crop at harvest. The consistent flavor comes from all that. On one occasion I was able to corner a famer in his field and got him to explain all this to me. He thought I was completely loco. He was right.“
There’s a local variety of “sweet onion” grown here, not really sweet but it’s a very mild yellow onion, I like to cook with them. Talked to a grower at a farmers market, he said the key to their mildness was to have a very sandy field with no sulfur in it. I would imagine that’s also true for Vidalia onions. I seem to recall not long ago we spent over a month and a good portion of our very expensive naval missile stocks hammering the Houthis. Israelis have hit them hard, including a few days ago. Leadership and such have been taken out. It's made a difference, but not completely solved the problem. Unlike bad fiction (all fiction), and "doctrines" and other conference room crap, reality can be more complicated.
Ultimate solution is for the other (official guvamint) side in Yemen to finally exterminate them. I assume we and the Saudis and others are working on that (we were during our carrier-based air campaign). Posted by: rhomboid at July 10, 2025 12:53 AM (1m82a) 338

There was a lot of talk on some channels that the US was attacking Yemen so that the other “official” government could stage an offensive. Looked like it was gonna happen - and then the “official” army just fell apart without doing much of anything, and their Defense Minister resigned in disgrace, and the next day the US just said “well fuck it” and we came up with some kind of excuse to quit doing anything there. Houthis are one side of the Yemen civil war that's divided the country. They control much of the Red Sea coast part. The recognized government is the other side, backed by the Saudis, the US, and others. Houthis are another proxy of Iran.
Funny, it's almost like hitting 3 sites with a few bombs doesn't really address much of the problem that Iran poses, besides being a "mow the lawn" temporary measure, depending on follow-up. Oh - and the Houthis are a pretty weird bunch. Part of the culture is massive consumption of khat (by chewing), sort of comparable to coca leaf chewing in the Andean countries. Fun fact: Israel's military CoS is of Yemeni origins (Jewish Yemeni, naturally). Yemen had one of the world's oldest and most traditional Jewish communities. And, for language geeks, what is considered the most classical version of Arabic. Posted by: rhomboid at July 10, 2025 01:17 AM (1m82a) 391
For all intents and purposes the Houthi ARE the Yemeni government now. From a wiki stub, the Houthi control 1/3 of the land, but 80% of the population. Which means that the “official” government claims control of a whole lot of sand that no one cares about.

As long as Iran remains under current management, the Houthis will be a problem. However - why they haven't been subjected to a quarantine - maritime and air - is unfathomable to me.
Countries/outfits doing far less have been subjected to such measures. A naval quarantine would be easy. Air operation could be run out of Saudi and the other part of Yemen. All the khat and food aid they want (oh yes, the Houthis and the people they subjugate are fed by our food - since unless things have changed, 80% of all food aid is US-sourced, either the commodities or $). But enforcing a naval quarantine on military items should not be that difficult. Anyway, if it hasn't happened already it's unlikely to happen. Seems their capacity has been diminished. And in any case, see first sentence above. Posted by: rhomboid at July 10, 2025 01:31 AM (1m82a) 407

We didn't fund "the Arabs" in A-stan, as they were called. The muj we supported were mostly the same ones we linked up with after 9/11. AQ got funding from lots of sources, mostly in the Gulf, but during the Soviet Afghanistan war the people who went on to become AQ were just a very small part of the anti-Soviet coalition.
Ending US contributions to what I assume is a WFP operation in Houthi-land could be interesting. WFP is US-dominated thanks to us being basically the sole big sugar daddy. I think the idiot McCain widow (referring to both of them as idiots here) is the current director, unless she's been bounced (don't recall how that post cycles). I'm past the point of caring so might be fun to take a "see what happens" approach to that part of the Houthi issue. My guess is Chy-nah and some EU and others would step up with $$ to keep it going. Been years since it was my problem or I followed it, but there were individual programs where the US wasn't the 800-lb gorilla. Posted by: rhomboid at July 10, 2025 01:55 AM (1m82a) 426

Note well that the idiocy of our resident retard is far from exceptional - it's the effective IQ level of a huge % of the US population. Inertia is the greatest force in the universe, but it's the main strength the US retains. See no reason for strong optimism with a burden like this.

Why not breed khat plants that have extra cathinone, like the way marijuana users have bred for higher THC? Then the usual dose would leave the user manic and constipated! We could release seed all over the sea coast from drones. The Houthis would clamor for the new stronger khat. Then they could be more whacked out all the time! Perhaps less able to coordinate an attack. Confusion to our enemies!

Qat grows in Yemen. That's what the Yemenis chew. I always wondered why no one has isolated the active ingredients in qat and for that matter betel and created a new drug. There must be a reason why they can't get the coca or opium treatment because otherwise the world would be high on those plants. Maybe they're too picky to grow widely. Posting this fine evening from Cohoe, AK. Near the mouth of the Kasilof River, whence we will be dipnetting red salmon tomorrow. Really loving this new travel trailer, like bringing an apartment with us, instead of living in a damned tent. A real toilet and shower, for heaven's sake.
But tomorrow DH will be freezing his nuts in the river with the boy, pulling out salmon by the net full, and I will be up to my ears in fish guts. Really good counts this week at the fish weir, so we have high expectations. By the middle of next week, we will be smoking and canning like mad. Yum. Why do they do it? They openly talk about ending whiteness. It's anti-white propaganda. You see white women and men with anyone but other whites in commercials, television, and movies because they're trying to convince whites to voluntarily go extinct. Same reason pr0n is obsessed with interracial sex. There's an old observation that the purpose of a system is what it does. A corollary is that if a system appears designed to achieve a certain result it is. Posted by: bear with asymmetrical balls at July 10, 2025 03:33 AM (SSEhk) 449

stirring up trouble Posted by: JQ at July 10, 2025 03:34 AM (rdVOm) Entirely possible, but he/she/it is not wrong per se. We're an open multiracial country. Free people have to be free to love someone of any race or ethnicity they choose. I don't have any problem with mixed-raced unions. Why would I? But there's a difference between free people making their own choices and the concerted propaganda we are seeing to influence those choices. That's what I object to: the subtle thumb on the scale. But, of course, if you're white and notice this, you're a racist. Unlike, say certain segments of the black community, which have been very vocal in their opposition to black men choosing white or asian mates, for example. They can openly complain about this kind of thing in nakedly racialist language and draw nary a peep of criticism from the broader culture. What's going on here is no different than the endless gay propaganda in media. And the people who have conquered us have done such a thorough job that we won't even complain about the conquest.
