Good evening and welcome to the Tuesday ONT. We had a bit of a de-lurking thread last week. Wouldn't you know it, several brave souls took the plunge and pressed the enter key - and it was fun. If you are lurking tonight, toss in a comment or four and enjoy the chaos from the other side of the monitor (or phone screen).

Being arrested, right? I mean it looks like an arrest, but kind of looks like...Pride Month. Arrest it is.

ICE has a Self-Deportation page. Humor can be found nearly everywhere.

Self-deporting simply means you leave the U.S. before you encounter immigration officials. Everyone's process is different. You may want to let your employer, your friends, and your family know you're leaving. You may also want to help find support for the people you care about, pack up the things you’d like to bring with you, or make living arrangements for the next phase of your journey.
Remember, if ICE officials arrest you, you may not have an opportunity to do any of these things. Immediately after ICE arrests you, you'll go to detention for proceedings before an immigration judge - or, if you already have a final order of removal, ICE will remove you.

This section of the ONT was in draft prior to the recent and tragic flooding in Texas. Prayers and well wishes up to the people of Central Texas - especially the Camp Mystic children, their families, and all impacted.

Engineering marvels. Been fortunate to have visited most on the list at the link below - and several others on the Columbia River dam system. Any of the Horde visited/toured any dams? Fascinating to see the size and scope of the hydroelectric power plants.

A list to get the conversation started. The author of the write up has a wandering brain - see the last entry of his/her list.

Grand Coulee. Some good overhead drone shots and additional footage showing the size of things.

Lake Missoula: Cordilleran Ice Sheet blocked (dammed) the Clark Fork River, creating a massive lake in western Montana. The dam failed many times over thousands of years - unleashing massive floods. This reshaped much of north Idaho, eastern Washington, and the Columbia River Gorge. It is widely reported that parts of Idaho, Washington, and Oregon were under hundreds of feet of water.

Let's dive into Glacial Lake Missoula. A lot of unknowns on the specifics but the scientific community (whatever the hell that is) agrees on the broad strokes.

- The ice dam was over 2000 feet tall.
- Glacial Lake Missoula was as big as Lakes Erie and Ontario combined.
- The flood waters ran with the force equal to 60 Amazon Rivers.
- Car-sized boulders embedded in ice floated some 500 miles; they can still be seen today!
- There is no evidence of fish in the glacial lake, but there may have been in the tributaries
- No human relics have been found but native oral history suggests people may have witnessed the floods.

The raging waters created what are known as the Dry Falls.

Sun Lakes—Dry Falls State Park is an important part of the geologic history of Washington State. Few sites in eastern Washington better capture the cataclysmic nature of the geologic processes that have shaped the Columbia Basin. Have you ever imagined a waterfall that was five times the width and three times the height of Niagara Falls? The pathway of this massive waterfall can be seen clearly at Dry Falls, allowing visitors to travel back in time to the years of the great ice age floods.

The Channeled Scablands

The Channeled Scablands are probably the least known of the seven wonders of Washington State, but they have the most fascinating geological story. I still meet people today who grew up in the Seattle area that have never heard of them. What are they? Most of eastern Washington State is either farmland or mountains, but then there are large swaths of the landscape where all you can see is barren bedrock and strange rocky land formations. The early settlers in eastern Washington referred to these areas as scablands because they were not suitable for farming. Their origin was a complete mystery.
The Channeled Scablands extend from the area around Spokane, west to the Columbia River near Vantage and southwest to the Snake River near Pasco. They are known as the "Channeled Scablands" because they are crisscrossed by long channels cut into the bedrock, called coulees. About 150 distinct coulees have been identified; some of them are hundreds of feet deep. The two largest are Moses Coulee, which is 40 miles long, and Grand Coulee, which is 60 miles long.

- Crumbs on the counter
- Loading the dishwasher properly (one spiritedly claimed that his family thinks the dishwasher door only opens eight inches). Yes, the question was asked about 16 forks in one slot
- Pressing F5 like it is the only form of cardio

We were discussing that earlier today. The problem is that it’s beautiful green pasture land with small clumps of trees with a lazy stream running through it every day for 25 years. Then suddenly it becomes absolute hell on earth for 2 days and everyone there dies. And then it goes back to being beautiful and gentle for another 25 years.

16 Love the mystery click. Toby used to spend somewhere around 50-100k for Fourth of July fireworks at his club. This year was the first since his passing (they moved to every other year during the wuflu) and they put in a monument and new flag pole dedicated to him. It was the last big fireworks show they are going to do.

When we were house hunting in Eastern TN, we found a lovely place along the Nolichucky River. I checked the maps and the home itself was above the 500 year flood plain. We didn't get the place for a few reasons.

The flooding from Helene wiped it out later in '24.

His producer told him that may be true, but that he could communicate and he had sold him on the songs so he wanted him to sing on the album. And the rest was history. When I was house-hunting back in 2011, I looked at a home that was OK, in my price range, with some decent features. However, it had major structural problems with the foundation so I opted not to buy it.

Fast forward 13 years and a tornado sweeps through my town, passing very close by to my current home. The tornado totally demolished that other house. I see the wreckage every time I go to and from Walmart on Saturdays.

71 Day 2 of window replacement has come and gone.

The new windows are fantastic, in fact they are too fantastic and now I have to paint the houses to match the fabulousness.

I'd like to paint the main house federal blue but it's just not the right style.

Probably either going to be an orangey or sagey color, the barndominium is going to probably be painted a red, but not barn red, a muted or pastel red, maybe red jasper.

Drove I-84 along the Columbia River Gorge recently and was amazed at the sheer size of the river. Most impressed by many spots along the way, including Marysville and the Bonneville hatchery. Those sturgeon are huge and the ones we saw were just babies!

110 Today, my sister and I spent the day making calls and then we had to go to the funeral home. They had already brought Dad back from the St. Louis Hospital.

The funeral director asked if we wanted to see him. I couldn't do it. The last memory of him is of the paramedics taking him out of the hospital to transfer him to STL. The last thing I remember is Dad looking back at us and saying "Bye kids" with a smile. If only we had known that "bye" would mean forever.

After the funeral home, we went to Walmart. We were trying to pick out dinner (not very hungry) and I saw the family meals. I just lost it and broke down in the middle of the store. I tried so hard to keep myself together, but I failed.

We asked Ciampino's sister in England to write his obituary so she could feel involved.

A good friend worked at The Dalles dam, so I got to ride withher through the restricted area a few times. Got to arrange for our field techs to go in and work on the internet at some job sites there. 179 Ran into Home Depot this evening, right during a little pop-up thunderstorm.

Walked in and the entrance was flooded. I couldn't believe their threshold didn't effectively block out a little rain.

Started going deeper into the store and saw that EVERY aisle had water a 1/2" deep.

Grabbed my parts and went back to the front of the store and saw a crew of people with squeegees and wet vacs.

Turns out that the main riser on their overhead sprinkler system had burst a half hour earlier.

I don't know who poured and polished their concrete slab floor, but they did a hell of a job. That floor was flat and even throughout the entire store when measured by the old school "water level" method!

When I was tending my Mom, solo, in December 2021, some of my funniest moments were not unlike scenes from Driving Miss Daisy" when I would take her shopping for groceries.

I had my "Yonder's the Piggly Wiggly" moment with her when she insisted that I had to park about as far away from the entrance as possible because "that was where folks with the handicapped tags parked". As she argued with me whether she had such a tag or not, I kept driving and pulled into a parking spot just outside the entrance. "Well, here we are!" I proclaimed as I shut off the car's engine. She wasn't happy with me, but she did appreciate the shorter walk.

200 Gavins Point Dam is part of a system of dams to control the Missouri river. People, especially farmers got careless. The farmers had taken to adding a couple extra acres of bottom land every so often. The most prevalent accusation for the Corps' lack of action was that they didn't want to flood out the fish in the river. Certain fish and water birds would have not been able to breed if the water flow was off. Well, the birds and fish weren't able to breed, and a lot of people discovered what the words "flood plain" meant.

The continental drift/plate tectonics crowd had an uphill battle all the way. Even after Hess did his mapping during WWII, it took a long time for anyone to pay attention. A guy named Hapgood? wrote a book in the mid-50s to debunk the whole thing, and the foreword was written by Albert Einstein, who also thought it was a bunch of hooey. I think it was the late 60's before anyone took plate tectonics seriously.

I’m so sorry, that’s such a hard spot for the family to be in. My family had a very similar situation with my father 5 years ago. It helped us that he had always said, and had even put in writing, that if he ever was at the point where his life was only being sustained by a machine, he wanted us to end it. So it made it much more bearable doing what we knew he wanted us to do.

Yeah, as Miley mentioned above, Randall Carlson's stuff is truly fascinating. He's a proponent of the Younger Dryas impact hypothesis (which is very controversial). "Catastrophism" is still considered fringe and woo-woo-ish. I believe the truth is both. Earth's history is long periods of boring gradualism, punctuated by geologically brief period of cataclysmic terror.

The evidence of how fast some of these changes could've occurred is fascinating. Greenland ice cores showing temperature changes of 10F+ in the span of years.

I think there's good evidence the Younger Dryas period was a global reset, one of the geological brief moments of absolute terror. The extinction of the many of the "megafauna" species all at once during that period. Mammoths, dire wolves, and other such. I think there was a species of actual elephant that lived in NA before then.

Even though there is a crack below, the thinnish layer of sod on top can cover what is essentially a yawning hole in the ground. 444 Several years ago, I worked on the network for an event held at Hoover Dam. This was a big promotion for Freightliner announcing their intent to produce autonomous semi rigs. The centerpiece was using the dam as an immense projection screen for the main presentation. This meant I spent a week going all over the place, especially in areas tourists never see, except from the boat tours. The projector array was at the base and we hand to dangle a fiber optic cable down to them to provide network access. We brought in broadband via a microwave relay parked on the hillside opposite the Visitor Center, as that provided a shot into Las Vegas where the service originated. We then used a pair of Ubiquiti tranceivers to bring the connection over to the Visitor Center, which was the location where everything was being organized. We also had a Ubiquiti radio pair as a backup connection to the projector array at the base of the dam. Redundancy is always good, especially since we were concerned about exceeding the tensile strength of the fiber line dangle dangling several hundred feet down to the array.

It all went off without a hitch and it was a very cool job.
