Plex seems to be pissing folks off with their privacy/pricing structure.
Jellyfin seems to be garnering some influencer attention. And the Bee Link Me Mini has some folks all google-eyed. Just from the short amount of time that I have been looking around, yesterday. Posted by: Village Idiot's Apprentice at July 03, 2025 04:49 AM (a1415) 8
Off the shelf NAS isn't something I'd be real eager to get, after months and months of Pixy posting "Oh look, their security is laughable, and the customers got massively screwed, AGAIN".
It was pretty obvious these things were built with security as an afterthought, if it was a thought at all. Maybe a roll-my-own solution using the right software, but I just don't have the time or the energy to look into that or build/maintain it. Microsoft Layoffs:
And yet their gross profits year over year have kept going up. Something doesn't square here. If they're reducing their overhead in labor in order to juice those quarterly/yearly profit statements, there's only so long they can pull that off before that won't work anymore. https://tinyurl.com/mvsums72 This may be the first sign they're in actual trouble. Posted by: Grumpy and Recalcitrant at July 03, 2025 05:02 AM (O7YUW) 16
So I guess one question would be if there are actual security concerns with off the shelf NAS set-ups.
I honestly don't know. And if there is, are there set-ups that are more secure than others? Pixy? Posted by: Village Idiot's Apprentice at July 03, 2025 05:04 AM (a1415) 17
QNAP has a history of security issues. Probably not a huge issue if you don't connect your NAS directly to the internet.

AC/DC Live at Donington, August 17, 1991 https://youtu.be/Af0P6XEkI7Y This is my favorite performance. It captures the band at peak live performances. The decades of playing live has the band honed to that razors edge where there is no thinking about music; rather they are music. It is as fine as any quartet that has ever been, from any period or style. Often great bands are described as so tight they are loose. That doesn't apply here. They are full on gang assault with weapons and somehow still are profoundly musical; that place music become pure sound energy, maybe sound poetry. Beethoven's last 4 piano sonatas spend their whole time doing exactly that. It is a rarefied place that only the best composers and performers achieve. Side note: Malcom Young used the same guitar from the beginning to the end. He made few mods earlier on. The key was it only had a bridge pickup. That clarified the sound to that crashing, slashing sound that is at the heart of AC/DC. He is one of the greatest rhythm players of all time. The attack on the string produces a breathtaking sound. Toss in a godly sense of time and endurance and you get the soul of AC/DC. Posted by: Alteria Pilgram - My President has convictions. at July 03, 2025 05:10 AM (NXz8h) 22

A. Maybe because: unusual_whales @unusual_whales 11h Microsoft, $MSFT, has requested 6,327 H-1B visas, mostly from India, in Washington, per Amanda Goodall. Synology used to be the gold standard but now seems deeply committed to shitting on its own customers.
Posted by: Pixy Misa This is true. The main one is they have started locking people into their overpriced HDs that are mostly likely Seagate. With that said they support their gear for years with OS and security updates, don't seem to get hacked, and have applications for everything computing mortals might want to do. I have been running their gear for over a decade without a single issue. For multimedia applications stick to the Plus models as they are the more performant boxes. Also, I recommend updating the RAM right away. Don't buy their RAM because it is stupidly over priced. I think they wanted $600 to max out my box. I got the same RAM and amount for $80 on Amazon. TLDR: Synology should be on your consideration list. Posted by: Alteria Pilgram - My President has convictions. at July 03, 2025 05:22 AM (NXz8h) 35
Oh, many MAGA tears will fall. It matters not. They'd fall anyway, as the Empire dies.

Had a chance to go and see that show at Donington. Alas, had to work and couldn't get that day off. Donington wasn't that far from RAF Croughton. About an hour. Nothing was really that far away in the UK, really. Anyway, that was a festival and it had a hell of a lineup. Black Crowes, Motley Crue, Queensryche, Metallica, AC/DC. I knew some guys that went to see it and it was, apparently, one of the greatest shows ever!! Saw some of it on TV. It was pretty damn good. Plex seems to be pissing folks off with their privacy/pricing structure.
Plex's pricing is interesting. The issue is around their lifetime license. I find it mind boggling they still they have lifetime licenses. Anyhow. They raise the lifetime prices rarely and they tend to make up for lost time. This years was one of those years when the lifetime license went from $120 to $250; that tends to get the natives restless. On the other hand you get a stable product that gets updated regularly and just works. Can't vouch for Jellyfin and I never will since Plex does everything I want and does it well. Plus they have a server app for the Synology products. I guess it comes down to you pick your pick your solution and run with it. If Plex floats your boat you pay the $250. If not, you don't. Microsoft Layoffs. And yet their gross profits year over year have kept going up. Something doesn't square here. Posted by: Grumpy and Recalcitrant
MSFT is not in trouble. As for layoffs, MSFT regularly flushes out the weak employees. This also occurs when there is significant direction change; at those times they get rid of people that suddenly no longer have a job. They don't get rid of employees because they are failing. They do it because they are ruthless and very good at what they do. All the big tech companies do this. MSFT since Nadella has had the steering wheel it is very different company when compared to the Gates and Ballmer years. You may hate their products, you may hate them generally, but without a doubt today they are one of the best run corporations on the planet. As for Nadella, he is a flat out genius visionary on par with Gates and Jobs. After Ballmer f'd up the company for a decade MSFT was on the verge of becoming irrelevant. That all changed when Nadella took over. Posted by: Alteria Pilgram - My President has convictions. at July 03, 2025 05:55 AM (NXz8h) 61
I was up late last night with eBay, specifically a sale I've made on one of my vintage fedoras. This morning I'll bring the box to Office Depot. Their site says they do the whole USPS shipping thing, and I've printed the shipping label; so I hope all that's left is to wrap the box and send it on its way.
That box is a vintage one of the same brand as the hat. I may need to enclose it in a bigger, sturdier box -- which will change the whole shipping equation. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at July 03, 2025 05:56 AM (omVj0) 62

I want to be sure the transport over to the clinic and back will be taken care of; I can't drive myself back. Miss Linda refuses to consider downloading the Uber app, and doesn't want to discuss the options. So I guess I have to trust she'll arrange for a cab there and a cab back. And trust that we still have operating cab companies here.

Consumers should demand better. Looking at a number of the rocky planets in our solar system you will see numerous very large craters on a planet killing level. Mars once had an atmosphere that supported liquid water.
There's not a lot of evidence that there are many bodies left in around on the size or energy that can do damage at this scale. It might be that at one time our solar system passed though a "cosmic" debris field where things got very nasty for a long time until things settled down. Some of the debris in the asteroid belt may very well be captured extraterrestrial stuff. Meteors have several different types depending on their chemical make up. There was a decided lack of evidence that there was much in the way of extraterrestrial objects, space was supposed to be empty, yet we have now observed three in the last few years.
