Looks likely that 3 of those 4 will be out of the Senate after '26. Colin Allred (dem) just announced he's going to run for Senator against either Cornyn or Paxton. I take that as a good sign; he'll probably keep Beto out of the race, and Allred just lost to Ted Cruz, 53 - 44, and there's no reason he would fare any better in a second try. In fact, Paxton may be more popular than Cruz. Paxton is similar to Trump - all the establishment types hate him, but the voters love him. And none of the complaints against him are new, they're all quite old now. Posted by: Tom Servo at July 01, 2025 12:27 PM (uWKK8) 59

235 Guys like Rand Paul have their place, but not as drivers of policy, and the reason is because they are too uncompromising. They are the epitome of "making perfect the enemy of good."
Posted by: shenanigans ==== The major reason that Rand is criticizing it is because it extends the debt ceiling to past the 2026 elections. That takes away a major platform for him to pontificate and bargain his vote. Rescission bills should be Rand's focus instead of the debt ceiling and an initial House bill doing just that has passed the House. Part of the issue is that most of Rand's and Massie's for that matter signalling is on ill understood (by the public) process rather than actualities. Reconciliation was never going to be the big budget saver as it can only affect mandatory spending (except Social Security) and taxes. Rescission bills have the same filibuster proof power without the role of the Senate parliamentarian but have been little used until now. Same with making sure that administrative rules are truly dead and cannot be revived which is another law dating from the Gingrich Congress. Posted by: whig at July 01, 2025 12:59 PM (ctrM5) 295
Without this bill, the tax cuts are not permanent and a huge tax increase kicks in. If a tax increase kicks in, the economy goes south and the Dems probably take the House in 26, and the rest of Trump's term is lost. And we lose our chance to do anything else.
So yes, this bill, with all of its flaws, is still essential. And Musk is a brilliant man, but he's no politician, and will never be able to build a new party. Posted by: Tom Servo at July 01, 2025 12:59 PM (uWKK8) 296

"It happens every time there's a high-profile crime. Law enforcement officials, in collusion with social media companies, surreptitiously disable the social media profiles of suspects, leaving Americans in the dark about their motives and political leanings. The question is why. And who benefits?" The chans have demonstrated pretty clearly that several mass shooting incidents in the last decade had shooters who had been contacted and likely groomed by the same apparently-glowing individuals. Something to consider aside from the usual "quick, hide the evidence that they're moonbats" thing. Posted by: heya at July 01, 2025 12:59 PM (cIK1s) 297
I suspect the House will put it back in. Then the Senate will have to pass the House version whole hog in which case they get the 51 votes to override the parliamentarian.

JD Vance could have overridden the Parliamentarian at any time: it’s in his power as Vice President since he presides over the Senate. He didn’t, and won’t, because he understands the politics better than some of the hot heads here. If he had intervened, he would have lost enough squish Republican Senators that the whole bill would have been shot down. Look: is the glass half full or half empty? 292 Don't Tax Cuts lead to greater tax receipts?
Posted by: Boss Moss at July 01, 2025 12:58 PM (LL6Kc) Sometimes. The theory is lower marginal tax rates will lead to increased economic growth, which will lead to more money flowing around, which will give the feds more opportunities to get their grubby little fingers on that flowing money, and thus increase tax receipts. But, as always, the devil is in the details, and it's very hard to isolate one variable as the reason tax receipts go up or down. The world is a complicated place with many moving pieces. Posted by: TheJamesMadison Mebbe on the amendment procedure. Depends on the House now and Johnson on how to proceed. Part of it is the self imposed deadline of July 4th. In legislative terms, those are kind of self imposed deadlines that cause some to vote for a bill simply so they can go home and enjoy a holiday. The extraordinary measures for the debt ceiling limit are now figured to run out in August or September though. So the House and Senate will have to do the debt increase before then. Yes, the economic wing of the Libertarian party had some influence in the Reagan administration and even elected a senator in NY (James Buckley) as a LP fusion candidate. _________ Buckley was the candidate of the Conservative Party of New York. There was a second line on the ballot for the Independent Alliance, which I don't think had anything to do with the LP. Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh at July 01, 2025 01:19 PM (/HVsR) 399

391 I had a leftard Karen tell me last year that Trump purposely had the tax cuts end after 2024 because he was expecting to leave office then and didn't care about anyone but himself.
I swear at least half of them believe this bullshit. Posted by: ... ====== Reconciliation rules and the fact that McConnell and Ryan wanted permanence for corporate tax cuts and subsidies rather than for personal income tax is why. There is a ten year limit on the reach of a lot of reconciliation provisions due to the 1974 Budget Act. That also created the odious and oblivious CBO which purposefully understates the cost of spending and elevates the cost of tax cuts. Posted by: whig at July 01, 2025 01:22 PM (ctrM5) 412

Yeah, the Laffer Curve is more of a concept than an formula. We know that if tax rates are zero, you get no revenue. We know that if they are 100% you will also get no revenue. So somewhere in the middle there is a point of max revenue and beyond that we start getting less again.

The Parliamentarian struck provisions from the BBB because they were policy provisions rather than revenue provisions. In each case, she had enough reason on her side that some, enough, Republican Senators agreed with her. I am not saying she was right! She was striking provisions, under the rules, as they exist, to help the Democrats, but also by the rules of the Senate as they exist. She was doing her job which is to interpret the rules! Now she put enough English on those serves to make us doubt her impartiality, but if she had been overruled, or replaced, the truth on the floor of the Senate is that the whole thing would have come crashing down! She should be replaced, but only at an opportune moment with the least political drama.

Thinking there will be a high correlation between the House flipping back to Declared Dem ( vs the undeclared RINO backstabbing branch of the Dem Party ) and continuing to allow illegals to be on Medicaid. You'd think Trump would understand the political death shot re: Medicaid for illegals. Trump probably does understand just how politically toxic the issue is to America First voters. Here's hoping Trump -- it sure won't be the weasel, worm , light in the loafers 'Speaker' Johnson -- will eliminate the current Senate provision that allow Medicaid for illegals.

If Mayorkas just handed it to them, Trump can rid us of them. On X last night, people were saying it was illegal for illegals to be on medicaid so who cares what Biddy Collins did. But who decided the law was [no] longer the law and gave this money to these scroungers?
Posted by: night lifted at July 01, 2025 12:42 PM Laws do not matter unless there are people in positions of influence with the will to enforce the laws. Just look at any blue city in the country where police are told to not enforce various laws. And where local DAs deliberately do not prosecute to enforce various laws. Look at the entire nation over the past 20-25 years where no one has enforced immigration laws. Rules and laws mean nothing in the absence of people with the will to enforce them.
