Posted by: tankdemon at July 07, 2025 09:36 AM (R256O)

25 This is not that silly

I have seen photos of my grandparents, back in the UK, where they would go to the seaside and sit on the beach and have tea

the funny part was, they were all in street clothes- no beachwear, no shorts or t-shirts

and there were crowds of people there- it was A Thing To Do

35 I think it actually makes it a more interesting picture that one guy is reading a book or paper than if they were all in the same position looking out. I always bring something to read if I go to the beach because I'm not much of a swimming person.

The guy in the front right looks like Stanley Tucci, and the woman next to him resembles Joan Crawford. And the guy in the center like William Macy with a mustache.

I presume this is a resort or hotel patio in Arizona or New Mexico: clear blue sky, mountains in the distance. Miss Linda asked if it was at the beach. I said, "If that's a tidal wave coming in instead of mountains, they're all gonna die."

I like the colors and the crisp look of it.
One could put those same people, in the same clothes, and the same chairs in an auditorium listening to a lecture about the importance of baseball statistics and they would look like they belong there. Or change the chair style and put them in an airplane.
These folks are disturbingly generic.

Her comment perfectly describes a what DU is becoming. And not just on matters of sexual identity. Just look at all the posts in the last week attacking Bob Dylan for not being left enough.

from what I've seen, the #1 purity test in lefty politics is around trans rights, so kind of weird coming from her.

a lot of tenured faculty at colleges and universities badly overplayed their hands, especially on the I/P and trans issues. These people - who really ought to have known better - created such an annoying atmosphere it drove away a lot of allies and gave a lot of fuel to the right-wingers.

The radical activist tail keeps wagging the dog. McBride and the NY Times seem to want to give people an off ramp. It doesn't have to be "Ban Harry Potter!" (the very real position of a lot of LGBTQ+ activists) OR "Inverts back in the asylum!" (the MAGA position)

135 From last thread:
358 The story goes that Houston was created after a hurricane struck Galveston and the survivors marched inland and started Houston.
Posted by: SMOD

Houston already existed, but it grew exponentially after the hurricane, because it was not destroyed. Galveston was the richest city in Texas until the hurricane, but people saw the risk in being 5 feet above sea level, and moved to Houston. Galveston never recovered.
Posted by: Thomas Paine at July 07, 2025 09:34 AM (Vfq+S)

Galveston - 5 feet above sea level, but the storm surge was 16'. The entire island became open ocean for about a day. After the Storm of 1900, there weren't enough survivors of Galveston left to march anywhere. And forgotten now was Texas' first try at a port of entry, the town of Indianola about 100 miles south. First devasted by a storm in 1875, and then abandoned forever in 1886 when a storm turned the townsite back into ocean for good.

Houston, being 30 miles inland at the time, seemed the only place safe to enough to set up a permanent port.

But white shoes with that outfit? Just don't.

One thing that has mostly been flying under the radar for years is that much of the activist left are crazy people and I want to be careful here I don't mean "people that subscribe to an ideology I disagree with", I mean if they were around in the 50s they would have been involuntarily committed to a mental institution without any concern about their ideology because they have real, diagnosable mental aliments that impact their abilities to function in the real world.

I remember when Shrub won in 2000 reading lefty boards and it was a common fear that he was going to bring back the idea of sending crazy people to asylums against their will. Obviously that was a stupid, ridiculous concern but it shows a certain level of self-recognition among lefties...

147 edwardhooper dot net: People in the Sun, 1963 by Edward Hopper

In part, "People in the Sun are hotel guests who have been tempted out onto the patio to bask in the sun. They seem to take no notice of the scenery around them. Apparently they do not feel warm, for none of them has taken off a jacket or sweater. Perhaps they are even freezing. Wanting to give themselves over to the sun, they have inadvertently put themselves at its mercy. And the sun reveals all - their inadequacy, the shallowness of their emotional and mental lives. Evidently they had hoped to impress each other with their fashionable attire, but now no one seems to notice or care. Only one man emphasizes his difference from the rest. He has seated himself a little behind, as if in the lee of the row of others, to concentrate on his book. But the cold sunlight holds him in its grip as well."

Hooper seemed to lean towards both light and loneliness. (We pick our own poison at times. 🤔🤷‍♀️

I'm ambivalent about hanging (it) but did like studying it.

217 Houston has had 4 hundred year floods in the last decade.

Posted by: polynikes

I used to live near Houston. One of my bosses had lived there since the 1950s. He explained that prior to the 1960s, there was almost nothing south of downtown other than sugar cane and rice fields, which can hold a lot of water. Now, there are thousands of acres of concrete and buildings. There is nowhere for the water to soak in, it must percolate down the bayous. And every year, more concrete and structures are being added.

257 willowed from last post: I lived in Texas and the Gulf Coast for 20 years. A little perspective. Any summer Thunder storm can dump 5 inches and the usual places will flash flood. It's normal. Catastrophic rain always comes off the gulf from a low. I believe that when tropical storm Barry was declared dissipated people took that to mean all rained out and the low gone because that's what usually happens. When a flash flood warning was issued later into the Holiday Weekend I don't think people made the connection. Otherwise no way the death toll would be anything like this. There'd be a person or two that drove into it and that would be it. It's a horrible thing. IMO that's where the disconnect in risk thinking happened for those folks.

279 A lot of people don't understand how flat Texas is.

Imagine dumping a pitcher of water on your kitchen table.

You'd notice it puddles up for a brief moment before it all rushes to the edge.
That's TX.

Yes, there are rivers and creeks and draws and all that. That's the edge of the table.
Before it gets into that, from a storm with tablespoon-sized rain drops, that, even driving at 30mph, wipers at full, you can barely see the road stripes b/c it's so heavy a downpour, first it piles up on the flats.

Then all at once, rushes to the edge.

That's why it floods.

Posted by: People's Hippo Voice at July 07, 2025 11:16 AM (VlwBF)

280 Texas is mostly flat. But travel up to Lubbock from the south, and you’ll quickly rise to well over 3,000 feet. Or head out to west Texas where there are several mountain ranges including Guadalupe peak, topping out 8,751 feet. Not the Rockies, no, but an impressive sight. Even the Hill Country, where Kerr County is, is “hilly”. That just makes floods worse if you are down in the valleys!
