the funny part was, they were all in street clothes- no beachwear, no shorts or t-shirts

and there were crowds of people there- it was A Thing To Do

35 I think it actually makes it a more interesting picture that one guy is reading a book or paper than if they were all in the same position looking out. I always bring something to read if I go to the beach because I'm not much of a swimming person.

I like the colors and the crisp look of it.

Her comment perfectly describes a what DU is becoming. And not just on matters of sexual identity. Just look at all the posts in the last week attacking Bob Dylan for not being left enough.

from what I've seen, the #1 purity test in lefty politics is around trans rights, so kind of weird coming from her.

a lot of tenured faculty at colleges and universities badly overplayed their hands, especially on the I/P and trans issues. These people - who really ought to have known better - created such an annoying atmosphere it drove away a lot of allies and gave a lot of fuel to the right-wingers.

The radical activist tail keeps wagging the dog. McBride and the NY Times seem to want to give people an off ramp. It doesn't have to be "Ban Harry Potter!" (the very real position of a lot of LGBTQ+ activists) OR "Inverts back in the asylum!" (the MAGA position)

After the Storm of 1900, there weren't enough survivors of Galveston left to march anywhere. And forgotten now was Texas' first try at a port of entry, the town of Indianola about 100 miles south. First devasted by a storm in 1875, and then abandoned forever in 1886 when a storm turned the townsite back into ocean for good.

Houston, being 30 miles inland at the time, seemed the only place safe to enough to set up a permanent port.

I used to live near Houston. One of my bosses had lived there since the 1950s. He explained that prior to the 1960s, there was almost nothing south of downtown other than sugar cane and rice fields, which can hold a lot of water. Now, there are thousands of acres of concrete and buildings. There is nowhere for the water to soak in, it must percolate down the bayous. And every year, more concrete and structures are being added.

257 willowed from last post: I lived in Texas and the Gulf Coast for 20 years. A little perspective. Any summer Thunder storm can dump 5 inches and the usual places will flash flood. It's normal. Catastrophic rain always comes off the gulf from a low. I believe that when tropical storm Barry was declared dissipated people took that to mean all rained out and the low gone because that's what usually happens. When a flash flood warning was issued later into the Holiday Weekend I don't think people made the connection. Otherwise no way the death toll would be anything like this. There'd be a person or two that drove into it and that would be it. It's a horrible thing. IMO that's where the disconnect in risk thinking happened for those folks.

We live at a Mile High (and I work out regularly); spent this past 4th of July weekend at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon -- I highly recommend -- at just under 9000 feet.

I was feeling it. Hiked to 12,500 ft 5 years ago on Mount Humphreys in Flagstaff ... and thought I was going to die (first time I ever got altitude sickness).

280 Texas is mostly flat. But travel up to Lubbock from the south, and you’ll quickly rise to well over 3,000 feet. Or head out to west Texas where there are several mountain ranges including Guadalupe peak, topping out 8,751 feet. Not the Rockies, no, but an impressive sight. Even the Hill Country, where Kerr County is, is “hilly”. That just makes floods worse if you are down in the valleys!
