  • AI makes people dumber. (MSN)

    This is a finding that has been replicated in a series of studies across education and professional use:
    But in a series of experiments involving more than 4,500 participants at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School, people who used LLMs to research everyday topics demonstrated weaker understanding of those topics afterward and produced less original insights than people who looked up the same topics using Google.
    Of course Google itself and other search engines have become less useful in recent years for a whole range of reasons, most recently and notably the inundation of the internet with AI slop.
    "It is like the Google Effect on steroids," she says, in a nod to earlier research suggesting people tend to remember less when information is easy to look up. With LLMs, she says, "We're shifting even further away from active learning."
    It's like giving kids calculators to learn arithmetic. If you do that, you get the right answer, but you never learn arithmetic.

    And then when you inevitably get the wrong answer because you hit a wrong button, you have no idea that it is wrong.
    Oppenheimer says the findings suggest that simply believing information came from an LLM makes people learn less. "It is like they think the system is smarter than them, so they stop trying," he says. "That's a motivational issue, not just a cognitive one."
    This is hardly a new problem, of course:
    On two occasions I have been asked, "Pray, Mr. Babbage, if you put into the machine wrong figures, will the right answers come out?" I am not able rightly to apprehend the kind of confusion of ideas that could provoke such a question.

Chem 1 with professor Markowitz! Dimensional Analysis sounded boring and stupid, but it taught me to see the expected range of answers based on the dimensions rather than just the pure numbers.

So last night I received a robocall invitation from my Senators. They were going to talk about their heroic stance against "Trump's bill that is going to take away your health insurance and give the money to his billionaire friends."

Using AI tools to write before one has put in enough practice at it to become proficient is probably a bad thing.

But there were plenty of bad writers before AI, so....

The worst thing is using AI to make mediocre Burgundies. That is a huge issue and one that demands that AI be outlawed.

58 I'm up a bit earlier than I planned. My visit last night to the Pipe Club at the suburban pipe/cigar store was fun, as were the drives out there and back. I chatted with another new member, a fellow who teaches English Lit at a public high school. His AP students are great; his "street kids," as he called them, are another thing entirely. (And in a genius move, the school admin says they will no longer offer AP English Lit next year.)

I had some suggestions for him, short story authors and novels of a readable length -- the kind of thing *I* would have wanted to read at 15 and 16 -- before I found out his AP classes would be going away.

It's interesting (maybe) that even video games have gotten worse.

They used to at least train problem solving skills, reaction times, patience and diligence, etc etc.

Now everything AAA or higher has become a walking simulator with quick time events that don't even have to be done properly to advance.

There aren't enough 'u's in "Suuuuuuucks" to describe those. I suffered from those for a while.

So I went in to talk to my pharmacist about doing something to stave these awful things off, and I led with asking about potassium pills because I knew potassium helped. Instead, he recommended Magnesium Oxide pills instead as apparently these work much better.

So I bought a bottle (90 pills, 420 mg, brand name "Swiss Natural" and plenty of other brands exist too, cost about $7.)

Result? I've been taking them for 90+ days (on my second bottle now) one per evening, and I haven't had a leg cramp since. I'd say they're working!

Went with FenSpouse at about 4:30 to get some air in the son's car tires ( Yes, son is quite capable of doing that, but spouse said if he did it son wouldn't have to stop on way to work) . There was a man at the air pump with with a sign in his back window of his car and it said "Bless you!" . I thought that was a very nice thing to see early in the morning.

Investigate vitamin K2's benefits regarding preventing leg cramps when you stretch you legs while sleeping.

K2 has been part of my daily supplements intake for about 4 years now. During that time the cramps I used to have slowly disappeared almost completely. However, I only read about the K2/cramps connection last year.

Now I might get a mild leg cramp once every 3-4 weeks instead of what used to be multiple times weekly.

And of course, exercise.

Good morning, Fen. I'm glad you had that experience.

Usually air pumps at gas stations, when you can find a station with one, are expensive, and you can never manage to check and fill all four tires in one session; you have to feed the machine another buck or more to finish the last tire. Years ago I bought an air pump at Home Depot that plugs into the car's electrical outlet (once known as the "cigarette lighter"), and fills the tires easily. I carry it in the trunk. That has paid for itself many times over.

80 I've always gotten really bad cramps in the arch of my foot, even since I was a kid. One time it started dislocating that "knuckle that isn't really a knuckle" between the tarsals, right above the arch, whatever that's called. Incredibly painful.

I've chalked it up to dehydration.

In the hot weather, since temps don't vary much over 24 hours, I don't have to refill the tires much except before a road trip. In variable "cool" weather, I do it every week or so, or just before an anticipated temp drop. The car doesn't ride any worse on these horrible streets with its tires at 35 psi instead of the recommended 33, but the gas mileage, I think, improves.

I'm also trying to run ethanol-free gas as much as possible, since I've found a station with E0 at $2.99 instead of .30 or more higher.

I started seeing them pop up in the late 90's but they were rare enough that you could just go to a service station and use the outer hose on a wheel that most service stations had for anyone who wanted it... I'd say by 2000 to 2005, the "pay for air" self contained units had pretty much taken over.

There's some stretches I used to do back when I was fencing that work really good for keeping your legs and hips and knees working good. Basically do a full flat footed squat, then roll your knees in and out while keeping your heel and either the inside or outside of your toes on the ground (whichever way you're rolling). Kinda push one knee towards the opposite foot, then roll it back out away from the opposite knee. Do it nice and slow, keeping your balance, back and forth a few times. Throw in some old school straight-kneed toe touches, and alternate between a couple times. Works fantastically and doesn't take forever to get loose.

167 okjohn, if you're still here. I 'm a lurker and usually don't get to Pixy til the thread is dead, but I read it every day. Been praying for you. We had to do a bankruptcy in 2018, and we really, really fought going that route. But we were basically forced to. We did a Chapter 13 where we paid everything back. It was very difficult to do as they make you feel worthless and the courts humiliate you when they can, but we did it anyway and God blessed our efforts. We got out of debt and didn't have that hanging over us anymore. It turns out to be one of the best things we ever did, and it helped us get control of our finances. 1/2

If you mean that you changed your Apple ID password and you can’t access your Apple account on your phone, then you might have to go into the settings on those devices and log in using the new password. Ditto on iTunes: go into settings or account and make sure you’re logged in.

If you mean it literally locked you out of your phone completely that is strange and may require a session with Apple help.

I treat the A in AI for "Augmented" and use Augmented Intelligence to improve search quality and to identify trivia that I occasionally litter into my posts.

Many time, I will recall something from a decade or two ago, and time has allowed the Mandella Effect to alter what I think I know. AI helps to reset things.

As long as you don’t want to download any new apps it won’t present a problem for you - it will ask for you Apple account password eventually if you do.

You also won’t be able to buy songs or video from the iTunes Store.

But if you ever get a new iPhone it will definitely ask for your Apple-iCloud account password to backup your data and transfer it to the new phone.

If it isn’t working in a few days you’re going to need to contact Apple Customer Service and they can reset the password for you, but you’ll, need to know the answers to your security questions.

Mr k. passed in December. It took me hours to write all the thank you notes. My favorite cards were the ones that said "No thank you required". Unfortunately there were only about 3 of those. I did make a mental note to write that on any card I send in the future.

Thieves were cutting the free air line and absconding with the brass bit that connects to your valve stem. Easy to convince station owners to charge for the air service and recoup their losses.

I routinely eat food, including meats, that I’ve left frozen for years. Twelve years might be a bit beyond my experience but not by much. If it’s a deep freeze rather than just the freezer on your fridge that’s probably even better.

Use the ten second rule: if it’s food you want to eat and it looks fine, try it. If it’s food you don’t like, use this as an excuse to toss it.

196 (1) Air? I bought a gadget that you plug into the car, and it automatically pumps up a tire to a prespecified psi. None of this finding a gas station, throwing quarters or whatever into a thing, and hoping it doesn't simply rip you off.

(2) Got math? Reminds me of a time at work where somehow the cosine of 6 degrees came up. I said that it must be close to 1.0, and then it occurred to me that it would be pretty easy to come up with an approximate answer without even picking up a calculator so I did (It took maybe a second or two). One of my fellow engineers was impressed by this for some reason, picked up a calculator, and saw for himself that my 3 digit answer was correct. He seemed to think I was a magician or something, but it's just a straightforward application of the small angle approximation for cosine that you'd think any engineer would know.
