Many Democratic leaders and donors are panicking about Zohran Mamdani, the 33-year-old democratic socialist who won the party's nomination to be the next mayor of New York City. Why it matters: Establishment Democrats looking to recover from 2024's losses fear Mamdani could hurt the party's brand nationally -- while young progressives believe his formula could spread beyond New York. Democratic leaders largely rallied behind former Gov. Andrew Cuomo in New York's mayoral primary, and Mamdani's shocking victory Tuesday was the latest example of the party's establishment being disconnected from many of its own voters. Driving the news: On Wednesday, many Democratic lawmakers and officials either denounced Mamdani or notably declined to rally around him. Republicans -- including President Trump -- crowed about Democrats embracing a democratic socialist who has called for reduced police funding and sided with Palestinians in the Gaza war. The top two Democratic leaders in Congress, Sen. Chuck Schumer and Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, both New Yorkers, declined to endorse Mamdani even as they applauded his victory. ... Other House Democrats from New York who hadn't backed Mamdani were mostly tight-lipped Wednesday. Reps. Pat Ryan, Josh Riley and Ritchie Torres -- who went so far as to say he wouldn't run for governor if Mamdani won -- all dodged reporters. Rep. Dan Goldman, asked if he had any thoughts on the result, told Axios: "Not right now." Major Democratic donors -- who poured tens of millions into a Super PAC for Cuomo -- were having private discussions Wednesday about whether to back an independent run by Cuomo in November's general election, or rally behind unpopular incumbent Mayor Eric Adams, who's also running as an independent. ... "The full-on freakout by the establishment is entirely predictable -- they do no introspection or soul searching, and instead just lash out," said Lis Smith, a longtime Democratic operative who used to work for Cuomo but has become a critic. The coalitions that elected Giuliani and Bloomberg are gone. The Republicans are outnumbered at least 10-1 and they nominated Sliwa who is a political gadfly with zero chance. A lot of people have asked me if I will get involved in the NYC mayor race by supporting a candidate that can defeat Zohran Mamdani. TBH, I’m torn and undecided. Like every other city run by democrats, NYC is a broken kleptocracy. Taxes are astronomical and services are pathetic to nonexistent. Anarchy and socialism are the next logical steps in this story arc. It's what the people of NYC have been asking for for years and it looks like it's what they are about to get. Trying to fight against this tide seems like throwing good money after bad.
It appears things will have to get worse in NYC before they get better. The Zoomers and Millennials need a refresher on the outcome of Marxism and socialism. They are too young to remember the crack and crime epidemic and murder sprees of the late 80's and early 90's. The squeegee men, graffiti, mugging, lawlessness, chaos, and pandemonium. Streets that were too unsafe to walk alone at night or even during the day. Getting mugged on the way to and from school was not just a rite of passage, it was an inevitability.

In what can only be described as a win for the Wisconsin Republican Party, that state's Supreme Court has (for the moment) rejected a suit to withdraw the Badger State's congressional district maps. That means that the present maps will stay in place through the 2026 mid-terms, which makes the prospect for Republican candidates a little brighter. Cuomo has both. Adams has NYC. Sliwa has neither.
That said, I'm not sure we really want Cuomo or Adams being able to effectively run the city and implement their agendas, but it is what it is. And I have no idea what Sliwa's agenda is other than cleaning up the subways. Which I'm all for, but you'll never meet anyone who isn't all for that, and yet they never get cleaned up. So, eh.

Funny enough, women ultimately had nothing to do with Trump winning or losing, since Trump's gains from women went up each election, even though with more women, he lost 2020 (and then with even more, won 2024).
Instead, it was Trump getting a huge male vote in 2016, losing it in 2020, and gaining it back in 2024 that made the difference...for the record, it was minority men, that had that trend - white men also didn't change much.

Increasingly, I hear the young folk talk about going out and the process is to 1) get absolutely sloshed, 2) go places, 3) stop at an intermediate friends place to get sloshed again, ... repeat 2&3 I guess because of drink prices. It was more efficient when I was young, go places, get sloshed, go to taco bell, puke in parking lot, wake up on porch at dawn.

$26 ain’t bad for NYC. The fancy cocktail and hotel bars will be twice that, maybe 3x. I owned a high end speakeasy/bar, actually two of them. Drinks are expensive in part because the place has to make all its money in a small portion of the day. Rents are insane, etc.

This claim was made on the Young Turks last night (I waded in to the crazy to get their take on Mumdami), and they claimed that FDR saw the growing interest in communism growing in the US, with the democrats, and put things in place with his party to tamp it down. And that dems aren't doing the same thing now, to their peril. So the radicals are taking over.
Any truth to this? This is a part of history I'm unfamiliar with.

The best approach I can think about dealing with Madmani is to ask a few leading questions in front of cameras. Suggestions include implementing a total ban on alcohol in the city (restaurants and stores), ban private security, ban automobiles and trucks, remove rent controls, and other items that would make NYC even harder to afford.

If I had the city's juice to turn an entire block into a grocery store, I'd clean up. People (especially in a city sphere) are inherently short on time. One stop shopping would be a nuance in NYC, and no private company can afford the real estate or traffic requirements. The city can just axe those rule right out of the way.
