Wednesday Week Cafe

eltzcastle1145.jpg
Eltz Castle, built AD 1157

Grumpy cat will not be ignored.

Mama dog is so proud.

Matching munchers.

Husky and owl have quick make-out sesh.

Horses playing some game that we humans will never understand.

The enchanted couch.

Rescuing a stray puppy wandering in the street.

Happy dog hops down the street.

A bear and tiger say Love Is Love, H8rz.

Grandma is a magician. She just conjured a divorce proceeding.

Elephant's got some shake with those fries.

Claws.

Giving a good boy his birthday pinata.

Puppy found wounded and dying in the street due to being run over by a car is nursed back to life. The first images are tough but it gets a lot better from there.

Eltz Castle seems to be a popular tourist attraction. I always feel ripped off by tours of castles, palaces, Queen Marys, etc. They're never immersive experiences, just stay behind the red velvet rope and look at our very fake bedroom tableau but don't touch. I always want to run around in every single room and jump on the beds. Lean out the turret. Lower the drawbridge. But I never get to.

They sold to Ruger.

From Anderson, "With the sale now complete, the Anderson brand has been discontinued, and Anderson products will no longer be offered. As a result, warranty services on Anderson firearms, parts, and accessories are no longer available."

As for Ruger, the company issued a statement clarifying that it had no intention of continuing the legacy brand or catalog from its latest acquisition. Instead, the "strategic purchase" that includes Anderson's manufacturing facility and machinery will provide Ruger "the opportunity to work with a skilled and experienced workforce, strengthening its production capabilities and expanding its product offerings."

87 " To think that horses was all people had for transportation, until horseless carriages came along.
Posted by: runner "

I have thought about that. People treated their horses like we do our cars and trucks nowadays. Some were daily drivers, some pampered sports cars, others used as tractors or to pull vans and wagons and such. Some were well treated and maintained, others not so much and even abused and neglected. And most were scrapped at the end of their run, often with little or no remorse because they were just tools that had worn out.

One thing that is different about motorized vehicles is they last longer. The way we use them is not that different though.

110 I’m not a horse guy, but I can ride. Last ride was at 13,500 feet outside Quito in the Andes. It cost $5 and it included a long safety and practice session with the local wranglers. Oh wait — there was absolutely no safety or practice at all. You paid your $5, they gave you a horse. Off you go along a path that includes narrow winding between 200 foot cliff drops. Personal injury litigation ain’t a thing there.

When ponies are bad and you put an adult on them, they usually stop the shenanigans because they know. So we would put my daughter on them, if they were being naughty, not dangerous. 202 About twenty years ago horses accounted for most of fatalities in our National forests.
They can and do kill you without even trying.
One should consider ground work with a horse a martial art and always be thinking about protecting yourself. Sometimes it is safer to be closer to a horse even touching the than being in range of being struck or kicked.
Remember the hind feet maim, but the front feet kill and a horse can swap ends quicker than a person's speed of thought. Watch the ears.

203 Blonde Morticia -
People are trying to be “clever” about posting notice of a new thread. You know the code word we always use. But NO, they have to say:
“There is a new thread posted above.”
Like they expect us to read English.
I won’t always be there to save the day, but when I am, you can expect a hearty, direct code word from me! (I don’t want to call it the n-word, but there you go! I will say it when it’s time - if I’m there!)

Uh-oh. This means we have to let all the evicted invaders back in. Also any new invaders who want in. Darn.

Sometimes all they do is stop short.

Christopher Reeve, aka Superman, was thrown from his horse during the cross country part of an event in Virginia and broke his neck. He didn't die on the spot but he spent the rest of his life in a wheelchair and it the damage from that fall eventually killed him.

Nice guy. Too bad.

218 I worked a summer on a ranch in Montana as a yout. The ranch was owned by a buddy of my Dad's who made it big and retired early.

I mostly moved irrigation pipe all day long. I had a horse assigned to that I had to use and take care of, me a known problem horse.

Day two, the horse threw me onto a fence with no warning. The lead ranch hand, Cowboy Bob, beat the shit out of that horse. I had never seen an animal abused before and was pretty shaken up.

Cowboy Bob explained to me that horses were just animals and it was his job to make the animals useful or else they would end up dead.

222 A friend of mine was going to Vet School at TAMU in the early 80s. She was getting her usually placid mare out of a horse trailer: the mare suddenly backed up, knocking my friend’s head against a rod of the structural frame of the trailer. She had a concussion, or maybe something more: she had to drop out of vet school - she could no longer keep up, and her personality changed. She threw over her old boyfriend and wound up marrying a man who treated her like dirt. After the divorce, she got together with her old boyfriend who has been kind and loving to her. They are happily married, but she has trouble concentrating, and sometimes has irrational fears. She was not like that before.

227 A friend of mine who worked for the University back when I was a professor said one trick to taming a horse was to pick up the horse in your arms when it is still little: to make it think you are stronger than it. So we did.

They sold the horse a few months later. I hope I didn’t ruin it being an idiot.
