  • You don't need an author's permission to read their books. (Tech Crunch)

If they publish it, you can buy a copy and read it, according to a federal judge for the Northern District of California.

Groundbreaking? Not for people, no, but it may signal a seismic shift for all the content creators throwing lawsuits at AI companies, because this was one of those cases.

There is still an issue that Anthropic did not buy all the books it used to train its AI, at least, not at first. The damages for that will be the subject of a separate trial.

Never stop being a realist.

I know that doesn't help because optimists and pessimists often think they're realists.

There's an old Andy Capp cartoon where Andy's mate Chalkie says, "I believe we live in the best of all possible worlds. That's why I'm an optimist," to which Andy replies, "Well, I believe we live in the best of all possible worlds - that's why I'm a pessimist!"

10 The WD article is a prime example of how shoddy and superficial most "reporting" is and has been for decades. Several times the author mentions how SPEX's damages expert was disqualified and yet not a single summary sentence explaining the basis for that disqualification. The lack of having the expert clearly was the linchpin to SPEX's case and obviously the cause of the reversal on review. And not one mention? Why not?

Microsoft: Recently we've noted that people aren't embracing the pile of shit we refer to as Windows 11. We've also noted that people aren't scrambling to pay us $30 for just one more year. In a magnanimous gesture on our part, we're prepared to waive the $30 fee and still provide you that one extra year of service and all that's required is creating a Microsoft account and using that to log into your computer so that we can track all your activities. Don't worry, though, we'd never give that data to the government, or lose it to hackers, or use it for nefarious purposes on our own... no sirree.

New York City, F/A-18 Super Hornets:

- Buzz daily for the next 10 days.
- Announce that this will happen *twice* a day after the general election if less than 50% of eligible voters are found to have not voted.
- Duration formula: One day of double-buzzing for each percentage point of eligibles who failed to vote.

So, if 55% failed to vote, that's 55 days of being buzzed twice a day.

Ten days before the next election, commence daily buzzing again with a reminder about what happens when people fail to get off their asses and vote.

Fen, I did that for a number of years. Not heavy labor, but driving an un-air-conditioned van and toting packages, some requiring a hand truck, into and out of offices. Meh. New York is an acquired taste. My memory of it during the late 1970s as a cadet passing through was gigantic piles of shit on the sidewalk and other general decay.

I was there again in November 2001 and I didn't see gigantic piles of shit on the sidewalk. The only decay was the stuff that wasn't cleaned up after 9/11. It was a hell of a lot better place than the one I had seen ~20 years earlier even with the aftermath of 9/11 visible downtown.

IMO, while there's stuff to like in NYC there's a lot more to hate. I'm not a city guy and that colors my reaction.

78 @Wolfus: To answer your question yesterday: No there is no air conditioning in these busses. Northern climate, so cold is what we mostly contend with, thus we have the rear, midship, driver, and stairwell heater package.

G & R, then you are dealing with what I faced in the un-cooled Ford vans for 7-8 hours a day. For eight and a half long years. Needless to say, I hated my work. The biggest favor they did me was to fire me (long story) in early 1987, a year or two before they went out of business.

Are your buses diesel-powered and with manual transmissions? I've never driven one and I never rode them as a kid, so I don't know.

I'd read about NYC for many years. When I finally got to visit in Oct. '98, I liked it a lot, but found it, as I'd expected, far too crowded and expensive. People were helpful if it didn't cost them any money or much time. Now, though, when I read about Fifth Avenue or the Empire State Building or Midtown or Washington Square/Greenwich Village, I have actual mental pictures, instead of having to adapt what I know from Da Swamp here.

As my dad used to say "When it's too hot, I just want to lay down. When it's too cold, I hurt." I was in both conditions as a soldier a long time ago and I'd rather be too hot WITH WATER than too cold. (Although if the humidity is such that you cannot cool off via sweat, too hot will kill you as easily as too cold.)

Yes . . . and we at Purolator Courier would drag ourselves into an office and gasp, "Where's the package?" while looking like chain gang escapees in blue uniforms. When Federal Express started, they had A/C in the vans, and their couriers bounced into the customers' offices looking crisp and efficient. Guess who is still around?

Cool. There are a lot of folks living there; if what I thought about NYC was the absolute truth, there wouldn't be. Some people like cities and urban life; I'm not one of them.

I'm not surprised that people in a crowded environment are as helpful as they can reasonably be, especially to strangers who aren't local. Predators hang out where there's prey and cities (like water holes) concentrate prey. If everyone in NYC was a complete asshole, the place couldn't have grown as large as it has. If you're a tourist, you ain't been vetted and could be a predator.

Good observation on how the driver looks to the customer: I'm sure the "chain gang" look had a negative impact on customers' perceptions of Purolator, even if they didn't realize it consciously.

I always wondered about the name of that company, too. It's never a good idea to include the pronunciation of "later" in your name if you're a delivery service.

BREAKING: DEMOCRATS JOIN REPUBLICANS TO KILL IMPEACHMENT RESOLUTION AGAINST TRUMP

Rep. Al Green tried — again — to impeach President Trump, this time over his airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear sites.
But the House just voted 344 to 79 to shut it down.

That includes 128 Democrats who joined Republicans to say:
“NO” to another sham impeachment.

Only the usual suspects — like AOC and the Squad — backed it.

So let’s be clear:
Even Democrats are tired of the witch hunts

This wasn’t about law. It was about political theater — and it just got torched.

Although it retained the Purolator name, it has had no connection with the oil filter business since that time.
