  • How many PhDs does the world need? (Nature) (archive site)

Or more precisely, how many academic PhD students does each existing academic PhD need to train in order to meet demand?

The answer is, more or less, one.

If you're working on a PhD, time to find a job. Like, now. It's only going to get worse.

11 Morning, 'rons and 'ronettes. A sultry 74 degrees here at Stately Poppins Manor, with temperatures scheduled to hit the high 90s. It will probably be almost as bad tomorrow, with no real relief until Thursday.

I have a fan and a sort-of A/C here in the attic where I work, but it's going to be rough. Fortunately, I clock off at noon, so I can go back downstairs, take a cold shower and nap in my nice cool bedroom. I hope.

Time for work. Talk to you all later.

It depends. There is no "Across the Tracks" bad area here, or at least there did not used to be. A given street, say in Uptown where I used to work, might be excellent for several blocks, and then suddenly the neighborhood takes a nose dive.

The few "still good" areas are all expensive, or far away from the city proper, or both.

I lived in Old Algiers, the "Point" as it's called, in '88-'89, and it was still affordable and nice. Many blocks, esp. close to the river, are still very nice, and the area has a pleasant neighborhood feel with coffee shops and churches. But the bad blocks, and other rundown areas, surround the good section, and you have to drive through the DMZs to get to the nice parts of the Point.

My mom had a bright idea similar to this years ago.
She had a problem with always running late.
To solve that she decided to set all the clocks fifteen minutes ahead of the actual time.

It worked for a few weeks, until her brain caught up and reminded her that the clocks were wrong and eventually she began to tell herself. “I’ve still got fifteen minutes left” and she started cutting it closer and closer until she was right back where she started.

This idea lasted a few years and then it was back to the correct time on the clocks again.

162 Will no one rid us of these troublesome mullahs?!?!
Posted by: Famous Henry the Second Quotes at June 24, 2025 06:51 AM (B1a/Q)

This is the problem with modern, surgical warfare.

We don't, generally, target leaders so they're in no personal danger.
We don't, deliberately, target civilians or civilian infrastructure so they suffer no hardship.

The way to get rid of the mullahs is to make the Iranian people choose to get rid of the mullahs by making their lives as miserable as necessary until they choose that.

I have no doubt the “Real Feel” will be well over 100 with the humidity - 89% currently.

Don't they have 12 hours?

It sounded like the deal was they get 12 hours after the Iranians start the ceasefire to blow up whatever the fuck they like.

That's what it sounded like to me.

Are only missiles at civilians allowed during the countdown? No bombs? Seems arbitrary.

Oops...that's what I meant.

Back yard weather station hit 102.1 yesterday.
Most of the other online ones in the immediate area agreed within about a degree.
I sometimes think I am getting reflective heat from the less than ideal location of the outside station. But most of the online neighbors with the same unit all show that same unique micro-climate effect.

From experience here, into the mid 80s isn’t terrible as long as you have a fan and can open some windows if needed.

But once you get past 90 it’s miserable inside without AC, especially if the humidity matches the temps.
