12 Apparently Glackens, a late 19th and early 20th century painter, is associated with the Ashcan School. He was accused of copying Renoir's style, though the accusations didn't seem to bother him.

76 William Glackens (1870 - 193 was one of a circle of Philadelphia newspaper illustrators who, under the tutelage of the painter Robert Henri, moved to New York at the turn of the century and formed part of the revolutionary group of urban realist painters known as the Ashcan School. In one of the more unexpected turns in art history, Mr. Glackens' work became the inspirational foundation for Robert Crumbs' widely acclaimed Assman art movement.

126 They know where men’s eyes go.
Posted by: Tom Servo at June 24, 2025 09:48 AM (HEGiN)

Ugh. I'm the worst at this. My eyes just go center mass when i'm talking to anyone, especially if i'm actually thinking about what i'm saying or what they're saying. I just zonk out and look vaguely at mid-torso and go slightly cross-eyed. Old, young, male, female, doesn't matter. The eyes just shut down and go into neutral. You could probably throw a baseball at my face and I wouldn't flinch.

It's one of the reasons I generally don't merely avoid eye-contact (because eye-contact is physically painful), I just avoid any visual contact at all. Pick two or three spots on the wall behind them, pretend you got something in your eye, keep looking at whatever you were looking at before you got interrupted. Whatever it takes. Just don't look at anybody.

Life is hard.

It doesn't invite speculation about the woman or her circumstances. At least not for me. It comes across like a candid snapshot taken for no particular reason. If here eyes were open it could have changed the tenor of the painting.

I like some of Glackens' city scenes and seascapes. They have movement and life. The effect of this one is bland by comparison.

This is an excellent, absolutely excellent, example of generational divide.

Gen X was the first to desire substance over form. Form is a big, big thing for Boomers and Silents. They want their banker in a suit. So Bernie Madoff wore suits.

Get the point ? Anybody can buy a suit, or be polite for short stretches. Hell, Tom Daschle was polite. And crooked as a dogs leg. But well dressed and groomed. Certain generations eat that up.

I don't care if Trump cusses. Most of DC and the rest of the world need a good cussing. I just want him to do the job. And so far, he has.

A Philadelphian, an illustrator, and one of the founders of the Ashcan School. He also did Reclining Female Nude (c. 1910) so he had a lots of pretty red and blue pencils to use in & around 1910.

It's a fine drawing but I'd probably pass hanging it.

I've also gone from envious that, in such art, parts are where they belong to admiring youth & hoping they'll understand the joys of it and that it, too, passes quickly.

Back to T&A Tuesdays? The only problem with that many Morons will spend the great majority of the day writing, "Boobs." Once they've seen, they can't unsee - for several hours. 🤣

279 Just watched this neat clip on the 3rd booster stage of the Apollo 12 mission.
It was supposed to go into a stable orbit just outside the Moon.
But, faulty telemetry data and they were off by 40kmh.
So, it's in this weird, irregular elliptical orbit around the Earth, that eventually passes the Lagrange point.
Where it orbits the Sun for a few decades.
And we lost track/forgot about it.
But, then it passes back to the other side of the Lagrange and goes into that elliptical orbit around the Earth.
And no one knew what it was. But confirmed what it was by spectrometry "that's our paint."
It's now back in the Sun orbit and will return to the Earth orbit in the 2040s.

288 Gen X was the first to desire substance over form.

In a sense, you have a point. We choose form when we don't have enough information to select on substance. Thus, I don't trust my money to someone who can't be bothered to dress like an adult. It brings his seriousness, his substance if you will, into question. Is this method infallible? Of course not. But if someone shows up with face tattoos, I'm certainly going to question his judgement, and therefore, not entrust him with anything I value.

Growing up in the NJ/NYC area in the 50's, we were accustomed to the many Castro Convertible commercials on TV back then. Still have the song stuck in my head!! The little girl pulling out the front of the couch as it transforms into a bed. With 7 vhf stations on the air, they pretty much had that ad on most of them.

291 We can chew gum and determine substance at the same time fucktard. ( did I do that right?)

Meh. The "fucktard" was forced. It didn't flow. Now, "and determine fucking substance" would have been perfect. Genuine. Authentic.

What I said was true. And you know it to be true, hence the reaction. Form was, and still is but to less of a degree, a big big thing. Do you REALLY care if your banker wears a three piece suit ? I don't ... I want to see the numbers. I want to know if my deposits are at least secure - and preferably in accounts keeping up with inflation.

But most people do not. And, again, its generational. They instinctively trust a man in a three piece suit with a fresh hair cut. I instinctively mistrust that man. He's showing me an image for a reason.

Now we're talking. What "cues" do you value ? This is important. You're hitting on it - and we can obviously disagree on the cues. IN DC, my experience has been that peers are (if anything) more cynical and open about the terrible reputations of their friends, but are also very good at gauging public perceptions, so I don't believe that for a minute about Todd. I use form as a first filter. If you can't bother to dress in a way that conveys that you take this thing (whatever it is) seriously, then I won't do business with you. That, of course, is not enough. The next hurdles are that I too want to see the numbers, the proof of your abilities. But to say form is of no value is a bridge too far.
