Iran Launches Six Missiles Towards US Base in Doha, Qatar

Trump warned Iran that if they retaliated against the US, his mission would change from destroying Iran's nuke program to destroying the government and its military leadership.

Iran launched six missiles towards our base at Doha. Reportedly, all were intercepted:

Collin Rugg
@CollinRugg

JUST IN: Qatar confirms that Iranian missiles launched toward U.S. Al Udeid Air Base were successfully intercepted.

There are no reports of any damage or injuries.

"We reassure that Qatar's air defenses successfully thwarted the attack and intercepted the Iranian missiles."

"We call for the immediate cessation of all military actions and for a serious return to the negotiating table and dialogue."

Will this cause Trump to attack the regime directly? I don't know. I have a memory of Iran attacking Israel last year. I think people said that Iran had offered a token attack just to prove that the regime was still intact, but calculated it to be small enough so as to not provoke a substantial Israel attack. This might be the same thing.

15 Iran is an honor-based culture. They need to maintain their honor way more than they need to accomplish things. Remember how Anwar Sadat held a victory celebration after his troops crossed the Suez Canal and took Israel's Bar Lev Line. It didn't seem to matter that Egypt's forces were encircled and defeated, Egypt had "redeemed its honor" from 1967 or whatever.

This smells of the same thing. You don't tell your opponent you are about to attack them unless you want the attack to not lead to retaliation, but you have to have something to crow about on state run media.

Yup.

It was another huge promise of destruction. Something like a few dozen missiles, almost all of which Israel intercepted, and Iran went quiet afterwards.

And that was with Iran's leadership intact, its missile launchers not destroyed, and the Ayatollah not needed to hide away.

They keep promising "devastation" that will "echo through the centuries," and they keep delivering weak-arm girl-slaps that miss entirely. Over and over. You;d think that the humiliation of promising more than you deliver would itself be enough to just stop, but for some reason they are suckers for punishment and just would shut up -- just keep threatening and threatening, and endlessly being proven to be castrated bullies.

Israel took out 95% of their ability to retaliate already. Really, if there is ever a time to just out an end to this regime, this is that moment. If we back off now, they'll just slowly start rebuilding and i ten years this will all have to be repeated.

Trump needs to speak directly to the various groups looking to overthrow the regime, and promise to back them ALL to the full, regardless of what the resultant new regime looks like.

Tell the Royalists, the communists, the Kurd separatists and the democracy-seekers that each and every one of them has immediate U.S. support and backing, and to all just go for it simultaneously. Don't care who wins. T]Let them work that out internally.

96 Don't discount the importance of the US waiting until the missiles were over the Qatar capital city before shooting them down.

Less than a week ago, Iran was appealing to Qatar to put pressure on the US to create a ceasefire with Israel. Today they are launching missiles that got destroyed over Qatar's most important and largest city.

Iran is flailing. The removal of their Nuclear program in a cloud of dust destroyed their opportunity of a ceasefire with Israel because they had attempted to gain cooperation from Qatar, Oman and Saudi Arabia to pressure the US in that regard. Their bargaining chip was "being more flexible on their nuclear program." That's a nuclear program that no longer exists (and neither does that bargaining chip).

"Three Iranian officials said that Iran had given advance notice that attacks were coming, as a way to minimize casualties. The officials said Iran needed to be seen striking back at the United States, but in a way that allowed all sides an exit ramp."

In the same article it is asserted. The Israelis knew of this too:

"An Israeli official said that there was an early warning given by Iran about the attack, though the person did not say through which channel or to which country.

Presumably these are newer and better than the ones in Kiev. But there one battery of those can fire 32 missiles and usually 2 interceptors are sent for every incoming shot. And the base likely has more than one battery.

Probability of a 'saving face' shot, even coordinated with the US -- high.

A friend of mine used to have an interesting foreign policy philosophy. Any country where the United States has to deploy US troops becomes US territory. France? Part of the United States. Germany? Part of the United States. Korea? Part of the United States.

I don't recall if we were going to have the option to refuse if it was a real shithole (for example, we wouldn't want Haiti, despite having had to intervene there several times).

I lost track of that guy over the years. I should look him up.

How great would it be if somehow the Iranians got tricked into giving it to a couple of Mossad agents for safekeeping?

I take Trump at his word that he does not want to start any new wars. Yes, he hit Iran because they absolutely refused to stop enriching uranium and it was clear that they were determined to get nukes but I don't think he wanted to accomplish anything more than stopping that effort.

It's obvious now that Iran has been crippled by nearly 2 weeks off non-stop attacks from Israel including decapitating much of their military and nuclear teams. And they are painfully aware of what can be done to them if the continue to FA.

They send up a few missiles after warning everyone they were coming to save face. No harm, no foul. Unless they go full Leroy Jenkins I don't see Trump any more attacks.

well if you don't trust ours, and Europe's spies, there's Israel and anyone else who doesn't want Iran to have nukes.

Good question. I suppose one could argue that that's why they blew the access tunnels. Once those collapsed, little radiation is likely to escape. It's a tomb for the Iranian nuke program, and assuming the centrifuges broke apart, a highly radioactive death zone to enter.

248 Fetterman again at odds with Democrats over Iran attack
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Benjamin Kail, Post-Gazette Washington Bureau
June 23, 2025, 2:04 pm

In part, "While many Democrats in Pennsylvania and across the U.S. are blasting President Donald Trump’s decision to launch air strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities, U.S. Sen. John Fetterman yet again finds himself at odds with his party.

In fact, months ago Mr. Fetterman, one of the most vocal supporters of Israel on Capitol Hill, was already encouraging Trump to ditch the idea of negotiations with the Iranian regime, saying that he supported strikes targeting Iran’s nuclear development.

“As I’ve long maintained, this was the correct move by [Trump],” Mr. Fetterman said of this past weekend’s airstrikes, which followed a week of Israeli attacks on Tehran and the country’s nuclear facilities. “Iran is the world’s leading sponsor of terrorism and cannot have nuclear capabilities. I’m grateful for and salute the finest military in the world.”

On esoteric subjects, I find primary sources much more useful if I have a question or need my memory refreshed about a specific item. Media and press releases by congress critters, on the other hand, are much less useful.

I'm sure no one here has considered the possibility Trump's strike on Saturday was a "face-saving" operation.

People are assuming it was a great success, because he said it was. It's entirely possible it did little or no damage to Iran's nukular capabilities.

In fact, what started out as a negotiation between Iran and the U.S. was sidetracked, for whatever reason, by whoever decided to sidetrack it, and it's possible... POSSIBLE, both the U.S. and Iran could be satisfied with an Iranian nukular program that only enriches enough and so far to provide them with energy needs.

And then everyone can go home and stop bombing each other, and we can all pretend it was a win. Which it would be... if it prevents a forever war and/or a nukular exchange.

Should Baptists be irritated likewise by LDS coming to their door trying to convert them?

Bringing up religious pet peeves simply reflects whatever the individual's viewpoint happens to be in regards to the Other.

Gray boxes are particularly useless in complicated theological discussions which LDS members as well as Baptists, Catholics, and others cannot expound at length as to differences and nuances in their own faith. I don't know who remembers Force 10 from Navarone, where Harrison Ford and David Niven have to blow up some dam in the Balkans to stop the nasty Germans, but towards the end they set the explosives in the dam and think they're going to die, but it turns out that it takes a while for the dam to crumble and fail, so they have time to run away.

SO ANWAY.... that's where I'm thinking that Iran is right now. The regime is mortally wounded, but it's going to take a little while for all the pieces to start failing. When they do, there will be a cascade failure of everything, like happened in Syria last December. All we have to do now is back out of the way and let it fail.

Absurd. Pretty funny, though, suggesting that Iran is really just tryin to get nuclear power, and that with negotiation they would give up their ambitions regarding nuclear weapons. Iran is sitting on a giant pile of energy, and the regime wouldn't risk extinction if their goal was simply nuclear power.

Qatar has a history of backing Ham Ass and being Iran's bestest Arab buddy in the region. Then, they also have hedged their bets by likewise inviting the US to set up a key base there in part to protect them against the Saudis. Basically, the emir and his Al Thani family play both sides against each other in true Arab fashion. The other primary emirates of Kuwait, Bahrain, and UAE side more with the Saudis and much less with the Iranians. Bahrain in particular is sensitive to Iranian subversion due to a substantial Shia population and thus Bahrain's Sunni Arab rulers chose to allow the US Navy to set up shop there as a hedge against being deposed. UAE in Dubai did something similar except with the USAF.

No, you're right. It's absurd not wanting another endless war.

You go ahead and believe what you want, if it means you (well, not YOU, but others FOR you) get to keep killing people on the other side of the planet.
Posted by: BurtTC at June 23, 2025 03:43 PM (dGCAG)

Absurd also, to refer to actually ending a war that's been going on for 45 years as starting an "endless war". It's ending a de facto endless war. In fact, it would finally end most if not all all of the violence in the Middle East.

But the US isn't even doing it, at least not overtly. Israel is. And only regime change will really do the job.

Meanwhile, the Shah is holding press conferences and setting up a hotline to support defectors.

He's doing exactly what I predicted: using the King Juan Carlos playbook. He's setting things up for a transition to a democracy.

Will it work? Dunno, but maybe.
Posted by: Archimedes at June 23, 2025 02:46 PM (Riz8t)

He's basically got two paths he can take: the usual third world thing of seizing power and ruling as some form of unitary dictatorship, which means he'll be largely forgotten to history in 20 years, probably even less. Known as just another third world shit-head in a world overpopulated with shit-heads.

Or the Juan Carlos route you mention, where he takes over as head of state, a cultural and moral national leader, but with virtually no day to day power. If he does that and succeeds at inspiring the Persian people to build a peaceful and free regime in Iran, his name will ring out in history for centuries as one of the greatest Persians ever to walk the earth. He may not be inclined this way, but that's the way to sell him on the idea, and it might just save his homeland.

563 >>NK already has a nuke and could use it in response.

That's the key difference.

Also, China.

Also, for all the ridiculousness that comes out of Kim's mouth, he has proven that he is essentially a rational actor.

And, any discussion of NK has to mention that Bill Clinton GAVE them the Bomb.

Posted by: garrett at June 23, 2025 03:49 PM (MmNOR)

564 558 I'm even more confused now.

So if Iran already had a nuke we wouldn't need to bomb them?
Posted by: Eyes Rolling at June 23, 2025 03:48 PM (urP29)

=======

Iran is building nuke technology.

So, bombing them before they get to the deliverable stages has lower potential blowback effects.

Either you're really stupid and can't keep up with simple conversation, or you're intentionally obtuse and not worth speaking with.

566 The thing is, Macron's background is also shady. There are questions as to who he really was, and how he got groomed to be the President of France.

It's all weird. But I don't think there's any real evidence he met his "wife" before he was 14, and by then "she" had already been transitioned for some time.

It was the era when everyone wanted their own Obama. Like Trudeau in Canada, young pretty empty headed front men. The two main parties were in scandals and wanted to cut out - was it LePen then? So in between their two elections the parties merged and installed an empty suit as a front man.

567 North Korea should not have a nuke. Or ballistic missiles. We missed the NorKo window. Stupid of us. Now we fewer options with them. We learned our sad lesson, and took care of Iran. Which is very smart of us. In spite of what real Amerikkan patriots posting from Qatar are saying.

Posted by: runner at June 23, 2025 03:51 PM (g47mK)

568 For the 100th time, Tulsi didn't say that Iran was not seeking nuclear weapons. She only said they have not yet built one. What she said has not contradicted what everybody else in the administration has said. They're trying to invent a rift that doesn't exist.

Other than technical intel (satellites, signal intercepts, etc), for the most part, US humint intel has sucked for a long time now. Israelis have sources on the ground that can put particular people in a place at a particular time to be killed. That requires human sources for the most part.

CIA has historically tended to discount humint and supported tech intel plus we were not as good as the Israelis (who in the 60's had their spy as Syria's Defense Minister for example) or even the British.

So we rely on tech intel and signal intercepts and/or the occasional defector which are susceptible to being incomplete or even wrong as was the WMD reports based on tech intel and emigre testimony in 2001.

571 > Should Baptists be irritated likewise by LDS coming to their door trying to convert them?

I'm not sure how that follows. If I understand Baptist theology, they strongly believe works have nothing to do with one's salvation. One is saved by grace alone. If so, a Baptist calling me to repentance is philosophically incongruous. Why should I repent? If I am saved by grace alone, I'm good.

My statement wasn't a frustration over being proselytized. My statement was meant to point out the incongruity in the actions when compared with the belief.

573 >>> The Iranians I've known have mostly not minded being called Persians, and sometimes refer to themselves (or their language) as such.

There was a sitcom in the 2010s that had a character from Iran and he always called himself Persian. (I'm not Arab, I'm Persian!) I tried looking it up, it might have been "Superior Donuts."

The only interesting thing about the Ms. Marvel show was that it tried to explain the Partition for a younger audience, and did a pretty good job. The rest of that show was dumb.

Neocons are quite real - they were the ultra Ukraine war backers, those fomenting color revolutions to Isolate Russia. Victoria Newland. Lindsey Graham is one so he's often off the Trump train for a bit but not yet an enemy.

Nobody that I know of is talking about us "installing" a democracy. Iran is the LAST place to try and do that, since people remember our previous efforts in that regard.

Always drives me crazy. Fascism incorporates huge swaths of socialism into it. It was meant to be communist-lite - it was created for that exact purpose. Its main goal was to get big business and the church on board with socialism.

The communists realized the fascists were stealing their thunder, and likely to be much more successful, hence the eternal enmity between the two. They were muddling up the middle so to speak.

591 Honestly Trump's strategy is perfect.

1) Negotiate for 60 days, saying this is your last chance.
2) On day 61 let Israel do what it does.
3) head fake about what we are going to do and when.
4) deliver the coup de grace to the nuclear program.
5) let the Israelis finish the job.
6) tell Iran it is unconditional surrender...or else. In other words, your negotiation position has deteriorated, pray don't let it deteriorate any further.

Nobody can legit say he's a war monger, when he gave them 60 days.

Next steps
1) Sink any Iranian asset that tries to close the straights.
2) Keep the Iranians talking, but each day make the terms slightly more onerous.
