Turns Out, Trump Did Call Democrat Leaders Before the Strike.
Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries Was Just Too Busy to Pick Up the Phone.

Schumer did pick up the phone, but somehow did not leak advanced word to Iran.

CNN tried to stir controversy by reporting that while House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune were briefed ahead of time, Democrat leaders Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries were only informed shortly before the public announcement, after the operation had already taken place. But as White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt explained on Fox News, this was nothing more than a misleading narrative designed to distract from a major American victory. Leavitt didn't just push back; she dismantled the lie piece by piece.

"We did make bipartisan calls," Leavitt stated, setting the record straight from the outset. "Thomas Massie and the Democrats -- he should be a Democrat 'cause he's more aligned with them than with the Republican Party -- were given notice. The White House made calls to congressional leadership. They were bipartisan calls."

The White House, contrary to the manufactured narrative, conducted its due diligence and reached out to leaders on both sides of the aisle. The administration's outreach efforts were comprehensive, but in a detail that speaks volumes, the top Democrat in the House was apparently unavailable to take a call of such national security importance.

Leavitt revealed the specifics of the outreach, exposing the disingenuous nature of the complaints.

"In fact, Hakeem Jeffries couldn't be reached," she explained. "We tried him before the strike and he didn't pick up the phone, but he was briefed after, as well as Chuck Schumer was briefed prior to the strike."

As to Massie: Trump has declared war on him and will support a primary challenger.

President Donald Trump tore into Rep. Thomas Massie on Sunday, blasting the Kentucky congressman for siding with Democrats and opposing a decisive U.S. military operation that crippled three of Iran's most critical nuclear facilities.

"Congressman Thomas Massie of Kentucky is not MAGA, even though he likes to say he is," Trump wrote on Truth Social. "Actually, MAGA doesn't want him, doesn't know him, and doesn't respect him."

Trump accused Massie of consistently opposing critical Republican policies and likened him to "Rand Paul, Jr." for his habit of voting no on major legislation. Trump blasted him as "a simple-minded grandstander" and said Massie was playing into Iran's hands by trying to block efforts to prevent the Islamic regime from acquiring a nuclear weapon.

"Iran has killed and maimed thousands of Americans," Trump wrote. "This 'lightweight' Congressman is against what was so brilliantly achieved last night in Iran," referring to the military operation he authorized.

On CBS's Face the Nation Sunday, Massie defended his position, stating, "We were tired of endless wars in the Middle East... we should have debated this war powers resolution instead of staying on vacation." He argued Congress should reclaim its constitutional authority over war decisions.

Trump dismissed that argument outright. "Massie should drop his fake act and start putting America First, but he doesn't know how to get there -- he doesn't have a clue!" he said, adding that Massie is "disrespectful to our great military."

The president ended the post with a vow: "The good news is that we will have a wonderful American Patriot running against him in the Republican Primary, and I'll be out in Kentucky campaigning really hard."

It's in the link the other commenter provided.

"Some of them think you blow it up in the House, you march Kevin back over to the White House and you put him back in the room with Biden and he comes out with something that’s miraculously better. I don’t think that’s the next step,” Massie told conservative media personality Glenn Beck. “I think what happens next is McConnell and [Chuck] Schumer say, ‘You guys are done playing around – we’re going to get this done.”

Which amounts to, "This is imperfect, but better than the alternative." Which is fine. but then he opposed Trump's imperfect as well.

88 To put it in perspective, the War on terror in Iraq and Afghanistan as well as other ME actions starting in 2002 and ending in 2022 cost a total of less than 3 trillion over that 20 year period. We spent 6 trillion in COVID 'relief' in just six months and about 14 trillion in 5 years.

From 2006 to 2020 of the war on terror we've lost more soldiers in training accidents than in combat.

These are not support or opposition facts but again just for perspective purposes.

The irony: that alphabet diarrhea they used for the street name is not from any Indian or native language. White linguists invented it, based on the phonetic pronunciation of the spoken language. Judging by the Iranians stage managed "attack" where they called the Qataris before shooting off missiles to warn them and none got through anywhere, I'd say the talk of a major war is as wrong now as ever.

But I would like some of you who keep insisting Trump should have done nothing when the terrorists who run Iran have been attacking and killing Americans for decades and were on the cusp of breakout with their enrichment plans would consider "American interest".

It's seems pretty weak to keep insisting that a country that has been calling for our death since 1979 and never stops trying to make it happen is not really a threat to the US and neither would them having nukes. Even if Iran didn't hit us directly and "only" hit Israel with a nuke we would definitely be in a real war with boots on the ground with nukes an option.

McConnell’s retirement stokes concerns Massie may run for Senate
The Republican Jewish Coalition pledged ‘unlimited’ spending to block Massie if he decides to run

In part, "Sen. Mitch McConnell’s (R-KY) retirement, announced on Thursday, could open up a path for Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY), among the most consistent opponents of legislation to support Israel and combat antisemitism in the House, to make a bid for the U.S. Senate in the 2026 midterms. The prospect is already generating fierce opposition from the local and national Jewish community."

And, "While Pell acknowledged that some in the Jewish community may not have voted for McConnell and have not always seen eye to eye with him on other issues, “there is no question of his willingness to stand up for Israel, his willingness to stand up against antisemitism, his consistent support for the Jewish community, his willingness to show up and speak to the Jewish community.”

And I'm tired of this line, you preening prick. This has nothing to do with an "endless war" -- just the opposite. The elimination of Iran as a factor in the Middle East would be one of the greatest foreign policy achievements since the Wall came down.

AND it ends a forever war that started well before some of these people were born. 11-04-1979.

Posted by: rickb223 at June 23, 2025 02:01 PM (5WDkb)

242 It's seems pretty weak to keep insisting that a country that has been calling for our death since 1979 and never stops trying to make it happen is not really a threat to the US and neither would them having nukes. Even if Iran didn't hit us directly and "only" hit Israel with a nuke we would definitely be in a real war with boots on the ground with nukes an option.

Posted by: JackStraw at June 23, 2025 01:55 PM (viF8m)

---

People have to ignore a lot of history to come down on the other side on this one. They have to ignore a very long list of atrocities the Iranians have been responsible for over the past four decades, and then ignore their threats and games over the nuke issue for the past two decades.

It's the same kind of ignorance that the Hamas supporters have to feign to think and say the things they do.

Is it? Iran has been directly, or indirectly, responsible for several hundred US deaths. Do they mean nothing? Do we permit them to continue ad infinitum? Iran has stated that they will use nuclear weapons against "the Satans". Do we wait until Tel Aviv or DC is gone before we act?

I oppose sending US ground troops to Iran. If, however, the Iranian government persists in being an antagonist, we should take actions to end it. If prior administrations had done that, rather than trying to introduce women's lib and homosexuality to Afghanistan and Iraq, maybe we wouldn't be in the position we're in.

@realDonaldTrump

Did I hear Former President Medvedev, from Russia, casually throwing around the “N word” (Nuclear!), and saying that he and other Countries would supply Nuclear Warheads to Iran? Did he really say that or, is it just a figment of my imagination? If he did say that, and, if confirmed, please let me know, IMMEDIATELY. The “N word” should not be treated so casually. I guess that’s why Putin’s “THE BOSS.” By the way, if anyone thinks our “hardware” was great over the weekend, far and away the strongest and best equipment we have, 20 years advanced over the pack, is our Nuclear Submarines. They are the most powerful and lethal weapons ever built, and just launched the 30 Tomahawks — All 30 hit their mark perfectly. So, in addition to our Great Fighter Pilots, thank you to the Captain and Crew!

Medvedev did pretty much admit in his post that the ultimate aim for Iran was nuclear weapons.

What specifically was Massie's plan for dealing with Iran. The same as the last 40+ years? Keep kicking the can down the road putting out fires and tolerate the killing? Allow them to fully arm nuclear warheads to annihilate Israel and others? Wiping Israel off the map and death to America are not just chants to them - that is their objectives stated plainly. Easy to criticize from the sidelines but what were his solutions?

330 Late thread OT

Mamdani leads Cuomo in new poll. Mamdani finally surpasses Cuomo in the eighth round of the simulated ranked choice voting — 51.8% to 48.2%. This is the second poll showing Mamdani ahead of Cuomo, but the first showing him ultimately winning.

It is going to be 100 degrees in NYC tomorrow, so it may be up to who’s voters are more passionate as well as more able to suffer the heat.

there will be a lot of passion over his policies. Rent freezes, free child care, free transportation, cheaper groceries and $30 per hour minimum wage. A couple both working minimum wage jobs would have a household income of $125,000 per year and see their costs lower on child care, transportation, food and rent.

It won't happen. NYC, like all major blue cities, is going to be hit hard by Trump’s policies and budget. There won’t even be enough money to fund what currently exists in terms of transit levels, education, etc. Throw in a recession and the picture becomes pretty dire.

I hope people are realistic about what politicians promise.

Given the recent Cuomo endorsements by Clyburn and Clinton, I wonder if Cuomo's own polling isn't showing the same?

If it's all true, and if the story of high level Iranian officials desperately wanting the Ayatollah's sign off on direct talks with the US (which they can't get because they can't get in contact with him), then it paints a picture of a very weak Iran who just wants the pain to stop.

I do think that Israel won't feel any need to let up on the nation that directly funded Hezbollah, Hamas, and 10/7.

You, along with many people, especially the Iranians, completely misunderstand what Witkoff's assignment was. In hindsight, it's rather obvious that his job was to keep the Iranians guard down while Trump and Bibi planned a one-two punch to completely destroyed the Iranian nuclear program. It was the greatest good cop / bad cop scheme ever pulled, and they did it in front of the world. The Iranians thought Trump would never attack in the middle of ongoing negotiations.

Witkoff has always been an op that Trump was pulling on the Iranians, nothing more.

___

I'm curious about the last time the US declared war. 1941 maybe? Not sure if Iran actually issued a 'formal' declaration of war, but their actions of invading US sovereign territory (embassy) and holding diplomats hostage for over a year has got to be an act of war per some sort of official definition of war. The occassional blowing up by Iran of US soldiers that were not engaged in war with Iran probably also meets some definitions.

I'm of the opinion that, official or not, Iran has been at war with the US since 1979, and used whatever means they had to constantly poke at the US by killing US citizens, up to the point they could get away with it without provoking a retaliatory response from the US.

Reconciliation is a very difficult and easily demagogued process. Simply put, you cannot make cuts in discretionary spending via reconciliation.

It is for taxes and mandatory government spending specifically excluding Social Security. Furthermore, there is the "Byrd rule" that allows the parliamentarian of the Senate to make rulings as to what can be included and what cannot be in the bill.

The information is out there and I suggest anyone interested in the convoluted process to read this CRS (Congressional Research brief) on the process. https://tinyurl.com/3wad9ncp
Link goes to Congress dot gov and CRS brief on it.

Discretionary spending cuts are coming via recission bills under the 1974 Budget Law permitting those to be submitted just like reconciliation on taxes/mandatory spending without a filibuster.

But, you have to have a valid budget framework in place (which the GOP House and Senate finally did in March) to do those.

No he said specifically "nuclear warheads"

1. Critical infrastructure of the nuclear fuel cycle appears to have been unaffected or sustained only minor damage.

2. The enrichment of nuclear material — and, now we can say it outright, the future production of nuclear weapons — will continue.

3. A number of countries are ready to directly supply Iran with their own nuclear warheads.

4. Israel is under attack, explosions are rocking the country, and people are panicking.

5. The US is now entangled in a new conflict, with prospects of a ground operation looming on the horizon.

6. Iran’s political regime has survived — and in all likelihood, has come out even stronger.

7. The people are rallying around the country’s spiritual leadership, including those who were previously indifferent or opposed to it.

Iran’s Supreme National Security Council claims in a statement, that the IRGC and Army “pulverized” the U.S. Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar in response this weekend’s strikes against nuclear sites in Iran. It further says the number of missiles matched the number of U.S. bombs used, and claims the strike avoided civilian areas, with the wording suggesting that this will be the only military action by Iran against the United States.

I think Israel has fully penetrated all of Iran's society to the extent that they can corroborate or not our technical satellite/plane derived imagery whether Fordow and/or its equipment was in fact destroyed.

The same for the alleged removal of a bunch of equipment etc from Fordow, etc. before being bombed. Enriched uranium may or may not have been removed but we also have technical means to track such materials that is one of the blacker (tightly held secrets) areas of nat sec capabilities.

Point One. All workers, wage earners and employees of any kind whatsoever shall henceforth be attached to their jobs and shall not leave nor be dismissed nor change employment, under penalty of a term in jail. The penalty shall be determined by the Unification Board , such Board to be appointed by the Bureau of Economic Planning and National Resources. ----------------

Heard earlier today:

"The Senate parliamentarian, Elizabeth MacDonough, has rejected provisions in a House-passed bill that would have limited the ability of federal judges to hold government officials in contempt for violating court orders. This decision was based on the finding that the provision violated the Senate’s Byrd Rule, which restricts what can be included in budget reconciliation bills.

The provision would have required individuals suing the federal government to post a financial bond before courts could use their contempt powers to enforce rulings, a move widely criticized as undermining judicial authority and constitutional protections."

We are on the right side in this current conflict, but our role should be limited to the air and sea, and then only to do those things that only the US can do. Like flying halfway around the world non-stop in planes nobody else has to drop bombs that nobody else has.

Someone might sell warheads to Iran. He isn't saying Russia plans to. North Korea has offered a time or two. Of course he isn't saying Russia will do so either.

Its just the 'on the other hand' view of what these strikes mean. From a Russian perspective they don't want NATO on the Iranian border just as much as the Ukranian border.

I think it mostly depends on how deep Iran built the facilities.

Reportedly, it was 400 meters beneath the surface of the mountain.

MOPs penetrate to 100 meters. What do 16 MOPs in a row do? Can they pattern the destruction to affect 400 meters down?

That's the big question.

A lot of the opposition comes also from the misunderstanding of the debt ceiling. It will HAVE to be raised soon and due to Trump/DOGE that drop dead date of extraordinary measures has been extended from the projections of early June in January to now August timeline.

It can be and has been included in the reconciliation bill as interest payments are mandatory spending so kosher. By doing that, it cuts out having to accept gobs of cash spending that Dems want in order to pass it with their votes.

First, all of you wanting cuts to Social Security, you are going to have to have filibuster proof 60 senators to cut or change it. It cannot be done via reconciliation. Second, Trump has repeatedly mentioned he is not pursuing cuts in either Social Security or Medicare right now.

So, you have rescission bills for the discretionary spending highlighted by DOGE to permanently change the baseline spending and reconciliation for Medicaid cuts (considered mandatory spending) making the 2017 tax cuts permanent, and raising the debt ceiling. Done with scant majorities in both Houses. We cannot afford a Massie or a Paul with such stakes.

Those bombs were purpose built to take out underground bunkers after the inability to take out deep Iraqi bunkers during the Saddam regime. Iran went into hyperdrive constructing deep bunkers during that time and these bombs were almost purposebuilt to take those out.

The original designs during the Second Gulf War were kludges using old cannon barrels, etc. hurriedly tested. These were tested and purpose built by the AF from the ground up to penetrate deep bunkers making the use of nukes to do that superfluous.

Hate to tell you ghbucky but moving from continuing resolutions to omnibus within a budget framework is regular process. Ditto for rescission bills. You might look up and find how you have been misled if you can look up Stephen Miller's explanation of what the administration is doing.

Massie ain't giving you the whole story as budget bills, especially involving the reconciliation process is essentially a thicket. Likewise omnibus, continuing resolutions, baseline budgeting, debt ceilings, etc. are items that Congress critters purposefully act like an octopus spraying ink and either exaggerate, misled, or even directly lie about what they can and cannot do during a session.

Then there is the requirement that you managed with a slight majority to get a bill passed without Dem votes. Requiring Dem votes will essentially kill any budget bills.

It was baked into the cake that Ukraine would lose in a protracted war unless it could finangle idiot Western countries to try to prop it up. Ukraine's best opportunity for peace was squandered by all around douchebag Boris Johnson (probably at the behest of the Biden junta) when Putin made serious offers after the failure of the decapitation strike on Kiev. I shudder to think of the consequences if Z man had retained nukes from the Soviet era to use.

482 >> Massie may be wrong on Iran, but his complaints about the Big Bodacious Boondoggle were valid; there are no cuts, only promises of future cuts. And the Green sludge fund is still in there.
=========
A reconciliation bill cannot cut the green sludge discretionary spending other than those tax credits due to the Byrd rule. The rest has to be via rescission bills. Second, Medicaid is a weird new federalism project from the LBJ/Nixon era where states administer the federal program. That complicates matters like work requirements, etc. as those regulations that actually give effect to those states to follow have to be moved through the leviathan HHS bureaucracy in order to apply to the states. Administrative Practices Act applies to those.

Most people here would be well served to actually read CRS (Congressional Research Service) reports over exactly how the budget process actually works.

It was purposefully designed to be opaque, easily demagogued, and mislead people and Trump II is much better prepared than Trump I in circumventing what Congress has been doing since Obama. Aka continuing resolutions.

483 Massie is what happens when local Dems think strategically (for once). He's an absolutist in terms of shutting down everything so he'll vote No on a bill 9 times out of 10. Ok. Dems weren't going to get the spot, but now it's doing no good for the Republicans to have it. So if you can't claim territory for yourself, at least deny it to your enemy to prevent them from being able to use it.
