IRAN WAR: If Iran's Supreme National Security Council decides to follow the Iranian Parliament's vote to shut down the Strait of Hormuz the real victim will be Iran's economy. Over 90% of its oil exports travel through the strait. The US can easily bring more production online. Shutting down the strait would be suicide for Iran... Grok @grok
A Strait of Hormuz closure would severely disrupt the global economy, halting 20% of oil and LNG trade, spiking prices to $100-$350 per barrel, and triggering inflation, especially in Asia (e.g., China, 50% oil reliance). The U.S., with only 2% of its oil from the Strait, faces milder impacts but would still see higher energy costs and inflation from global price surges. Global instability would hit harder than U.S. effects, due to diversified U.S. energy sources. Data varies; some exaggerate U.S. impacts, but evidence suggests resilience. Iran’s potential strategy to close the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil chokepoint, involves leveraging its geographic and military advantages, though no official plan has been publicly detailed and the final decision rests with Iran’s Supreme National Security Council. Based on recent statements and historical tactics, Iran could employ the following methods to disrupt or block shipping through the Strait:

Iran made a big mistake by making public their efforts (starting three days ago) to get Saudi Arabia, Oman, and Qatar to try and run interference with the US (and put pressure on the US to secure a ceasefire with Israel).
Their bargaining chip was "more flexibility on the Iranian Nuclear program." This was supposed to dangle a carrot in front of the more "sane" ME countries to form an informal coalition against the US. NOW, however....that nuclear program is dust....and Iran is being forced to lie that it was moved previously (it wasn't)...because their bargaining chip with SA, Oman and Qatar depends on it still existing. I dispute those figures just based on the population figures of 18 and over , the percentage of registered voters and the total votes. Simple math shows it's 90% plus. The only variable that would change it is the percentage of registered voters. It would have to be somewhere in the range of 85-90% of eligible voters were registered. Normally the percentage is between 70-75%. Posted by: polynikes at June 22, 2025 01:05 PM (VofaG) 218

Iran may try to "close" the Hormuz Strait but I'm not sure they'll be able to cripple commercial traffic through it like they think. There's plenty of TLAM armed ships and submarines lurking in the Arabian Sea.
IIRC there was some sort of action at Bandar Abbas, Iran's chief naval installation near the straits last night, if reports are correct. The 2020 United States presidential election had a voter turnout of approximately 66.7% to 66.8% of the eligible voting population, marking the highest turnout rate of the 21st century. This translates to roughly 158.4 to 159.7 million votes cast, based on various estimates.
In the 2020 presidential election, Wisconsin had a voter turnout of approximately 73% of its voting-age population, with nearly 3.3 million votes cast (3,298,041 to 3,308,805 according to different sources). So basically the same percentage of eligible votes and registered voters . Does not compute.
Posted by: polynikes at June 22, 2025 01:14 PM You're right. Based on this from Grok (below), I completed the math myself and came up with: Registered turnout: 75.8% to 95.1% Eligible turnout: 66.2% to 66.8% In the 2020 U.S. presidential election: Eligible Voters: Approximately 239.2 million citizens aged 18 and older were eligible to vote (voting-eligible population, or VEP). Registered Voters: Estimates vary, but sources report around 168 million to 209 million registered voters. The lower estimate (168 million) comes from some analyses, while higher figures (209 million) are cited in others, reflecting differences in data sources or timing. The discrepancy in registered voter numbers arises from variations in state-level voter registration data and post-election updates. For context, about 158.4 to 159.7 million votes were cast, yielding a turnout of roughly 66.7% of eligible voters and 65% to 66.6% of registered voters. Thomas Massie (R-KY) is now waving an "I Stand With Iran" banner.

Posted by: jim (in Kalifornia) at June 22, 2025 01:36 PM (ynpvh) Mr. Massie does not know what he is talking about. Yes, Congress has the power to declare war. That does NOT mean no military action takes place without it. (Were those who fought back at Pearl Harbor in Contempt of Congress?) War declarations are the abode of diplomats, not the military. In fact, circa 1980 the idea was floated to declare war against Iran in order to force the country to recognize diplomatic protocols in regards to the embassy. Never mind that they trashed the Vienna Convention of 1961, Article 22, 24 and 45. Why they would have changed their minds in the event of a war declaration is beyond me. Which is probably why it wasn't tried. Posted by: Cow Demon at June 22, 2025 01:45 PM (vm8sq) 321

27 Much talk this morning about Iran’s announcement that they will close the Strait of Hormuz.
Fun fact - you know who gets hurt most by closing that strait? China - that’s the source for a lot of their oil. Trump will actually be doing Xi a huge favor by blasting the Iranians even more. Posted by: Tom Servo at June 22, 2025 12:19 PM (EVFZ5) So basically, closing the straits severely hurts pretty much everybody who was ridiculous enough to condemn the action, but the US - not so much. The Gulf Arab states, Europe, and especially China. All except Russia, who most of those assholes is condemning over the Ukraine situation. So it takes a swipe at all the "good guys", but leaves the "bad guys" pretty much alone. Plus, they might not be able to enforce it. You can't make this stuff up. If the US wanted to say FU to those assholes, we'd do the same thing - close the Gulf. Posted by: MrExcitement at June 22, 2025 01:56 PM (hOOi9) 353

So basically, closing the straits severely hurts pretty much everybody who was ridiculous enough to condemn the action, but the US - not so much. The Gulf Arab states, Europe, and especially China.
Except that oil is fungible. It would sting for a bit - until, say, TX spins up oil production. Currently its active rig count is low. I'm sure this is the same for much of North America. So if the Strait is closed, it will put a short term strain on supplies until more oil can be brought online - effective everybody for a time until supply can be increased. Iran would be hurting itself more than anybody trying to close the Strait of Hormuz.
All of their oil, the majority of it heading to China, goes through the strait. The only benefit they'd get is higher oil prices as a result (Russia & Venezuela & OPEC would love it). BREAKING: Russia officially condemns the U.S. for striking Iran: “The irresponsible decision to subject the territory of a sovereign state to missile and bomb attacks, whatever the arguments it may be presented with, flagrantly violates international law” Dmitry Medvedev @MedvedevRussiaE Jun 22, 2025 What have the Americans accomplished with their nighttime strikes on three nuclear sites in Iran? 1. Critical infrastructure of the nuclear fuel cycle appears to have been unaffected or sustained only minor damage. 2. The enrichment of nuclear material — and, now we can say it outright, the future production of nuclear weapons — will continue. 3. A number of countries are ready to directly supply Iran with their own nuclear warheads. Posted by: andycanuck at June 22, 2025 02:05 PM (2yoRf) 372

Starting to really respect Marco Rubio. Totally blitzed the talking points of some dem anchor lady and did it in a forceful, sharp manner that left her floundering.
Most of his other cabinet members seem cut from the same cloth. They seem to realize that democrats and the media loathe them, will lie about them constantly, and that you cannot make friends with them or gain any respect from them in any way. More of this, please. Posted by: RM at June 22, 2025 02:33 PM (n/1Oj) 379
Except that Knopfler guy playing "Money for Nothing." Not sure how we allowed that to happen. . .
Posted by: Gibson Les Paul ------------ I'm a Strat guy, and I felt like everything Knopfler recorded from that point on no longer had that sweet ringing tone that the earlier Dire Straits albums had where he used a Strat almost exclusively. Posted by: Crusader at June 22, 2025 02:39 PM (TN0g+) 380
