The Classical Saturday Morning Coffee Break & Prayer Revival

IMG_1467.JPG

Good morning boys and girls and everything in between. Before we enter the Prayer Revival just a few housekeeping matters to go over. (Rulz for those of you in Mosinee)

1) This is an open thread. Feel free to lurk, opine and/or bloviate.
2) Be kind, be nice. The troll's tear ducts are overworked.
3) Nope, no, not a chance. No running with sharp objects.
4) Have a great weekend!

AoSHQ Weekly Prayer List

Please submit any prayer requests to me, “Annie’s Stew” at apaslo atsign hotmail dot com. Prayer requests are generally removed after four weeks unless we receive an update.

Prayer Requests:

5/3 – D asked for prayers for his wife, Susan, who has been having some issues. They went to the hospital on 5/1, and all the signs are pointing to pancreatic cancer. They meet with other doctors on 5/5. Any prayers would be a blessing.
6/5 Update – The doctors have confirmed it is cancer, but they have not yet determined if it can be removed, or if chemotherapy will be needed first, to shrink the mass. They are so thankful for all the prayers and ask for them to continue.

5/10 – Cosda asked for prayers for his wife, who recently had a mole removed that came back as melanoma cancer. She is scheduled for surgery next week, and it looks like that should remove it completely.
6/11 Update – Pathology of the lymph node taken during surgery indicates metastatic cancer cells. Now she will have a brain MRI and a PET scan the week of 6/16. She is classified as stage 3.

5/17 – neverenoughcaffiene asked for prayers for her sister-in-law, Jackie, who is looking at dialysis. Her kidneys have been failing for several years is she is getting close based on her numbers. Hopefully new meds will help.
5/24 – The new meds have not helped. Her score for kidney function is 16, and the trigger for dialysis is 15.

5/17 – B asked for prayers for the Lord to move a bowel food constriction or “kink” out so that his bowels would function properly.
5/31 Update – B sent his thanks for the prayers. He is healed from the bowel obstruction. He requested prayers for his friend, Jerry, who is in the hospital needing surgery for an ulcer and MRSA, and another friend, Mary, who is fighting cancer.

5/23 – Hrothgar asks for prayers for a dear friend’s son. Tim battled cancer 20 years ago, but has been living with kidney disease for several years. It has progressed to the point that he needs a transplant. In a real blessing, he was approved for the transplant list. Please pray for Tim, that he would receive a donated kidney. There is no cost to the donor, and the donor generally goes on to live a full life with just one kidney, and it would make a huge difference for Tim, versus long-term dialysis.
5/31 Update – Tim must lose 50 pounds in the next 90 days to remain on the transplant list, and he is thinking that is impossible. Please pray that he realizes what a God-given blessing he has been given to reach this point, and that he makes the right lifestyle choices to lose that weight.

5/24 – Captain Obvious requested prayers for his friend J, who will be having surgery on 6/9 to try and relieve her chronic pain. She also has concerns because she is on blood thinners and nearly bled out after her hip replacement. Please pray for the best possible outcome and also to relieve her anxiety.
6/12 Update – J had her surgery on 6/9 and it went very well; the surgeon had to do less work than he originally thought. J is already experiencing relief from the chronic pain she had. Thanks to all for the prayers.

5/24 – L sent an update. Her daughter, Shannon, the Franciscan sister who we prayed for when she had heart surgery, is much improved. There were some setbacks along the way – a problem with defibrillation and a respiratory infection - but she is healed now and will take her final vows soon. L is also much improved, after her knee implant surgery.

5/29 – Teresa in Fort Worth sent an update and her thanks for all the prayers and words of encouragement. They have sustained her and her family as she continues to battle cancer. She continues to receive good news: her oncologist is quite pleased with her response to the current medication protocol; they are decreasing the lab work frequency to every other week instead of weekly; the side effects from chemo have been barely noticeable; she can just take 4 tiny pills for chemo instead of spending one day a week at the cancer center. It’s been 7 months so far, and she expects that at some point the tumors will start growing again, but for now, they are encouraged.
6/6 Update – Teresa has a side effect from the chemo – her fingernails and toenails are starting to loosen and “lift” off their nail beds. It is painful, and also carries a risk of infection.

6/4 – Grumpy and Recalcitrant asked for prayers for his mother (Lynda), asking to give her strength and healing. Also, for the medical staff to be prompted to do a complete and thorough job diagnosing her.
6/7 Update – Lynda has been diagnosed with aortic stenosis. This is a correctable medical issue using surgery where they go in endoscopically via the leg, up to the heart, to fix the lower heart valve that is leaking.

6/6 – tbodie Lurker requested prayers for his son, tbodie Jr, who is in his mid-30s and was just diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Please pray for healing for tbodie Jr and for peace for his family.

6/11 – Legally Sufficient asks the Horde’s prayers for her friend, Bubba, who was in a bad auto wreck on 6/8. Prayers for comfort, healing, and strength are needed for Bubba and his family. He is in ICU and will be there for a couple more weeks. Thank you!
6/18 Update – Legally Sufficient asks for continued prayers for healing, strength, and comfort for Bubba. God is great! Bubba is recovering from pneumonia (on top of the other injuries from his vehicle accident) but he is fully participating in PT, walking 25 steps a day with assistance, his breathing is improving, and he is finally eating solid food! Prayers for Bubba, his wife and family, and Bubba’s many friends are very much appreciated.

6/14 – MkY sent an update on his wife Judy’s battle with kidney cancer. Like Teresa in Ft. Worth, her tumors are shrinking. The shrinkage is so dramatic, they are discussing removing the cancerous kidney. Since that is the original source, that would make it easier to attack and perhaps kill the other tumors. Thank you so much for the prayers.

6/14 – Our Country is Screwed sent prayers of thanksgiving for all the thoughts and prayers as chemo continues. It has really been uplifting. The side effects have been minimal as well, thankfully, and there are 8 weekly treatments to go.

6/14 – Inspector Cussword requested prayers for Brother Tim. He has had a horrible time, living in his car and has just been handed a cancer diagnosis. Please pray for God’s Provision to be clear and comforting to him, and for his healing.

6/14 – Inogame asked for prayers for his wife and family. It’s very early, but they may have baby #5 on the way. They appreciate the support and prayers of the Horde.

6/20; Prayers have been requested for guest Open Blogger and all around good guy Jay Guevara. He has been hospitalized with "brain bleed".

For submission guidelines and other relevant info, please contact Annie's Stew, who is managing the prayer list. You can contact her at apaslo at-sign hotmail dot com. If you see a prayer request posted in a thread comment, feel free to copy and paste it and e-mail it to Annie's Stew. She tries to keep up with the requests in the threads, but she's not here all of the time, so she may not see it unless you e-mail it to her. Please note: Prayer requests are generally removed after four weeks or so unless we receive an update.

3 Prayers up for those who have asked us for them;
Prayers up for those who need them but haven't asked us for them;
Prayers up for those that need them but don't know it yet;
Prayers up for those that pray alone in silence whose petitions are known only to God;
And bless all those that have sought Your wisdom, heard Your answers, and are trying to do Your will on this Earth!

19 I would like to ask prayers for the church which I serve. The money isn't an issue because of the kind generosity of folks here some time ago ( Thanks again !) and we got money from the sale of land . However, my offsite supervisor does not want us to spend the money and wants us to close , so if people could pray that rough places are made smooth to the glory of God and to the lessening of our stress about this it would be much appreciated. Thank you .

I read an article on First Things about how Mainline Denominations are been squeezed between orthodoxy and evangelicals. You might find it interesting: https://tinyurl.com/2jt9yjt5

TLR: A majority of Christians are Catholic/Orthodox, and a growing segment of the rest prefer a "direct contact" with Jesus, without ordained ministers, sacraments and the various elements of what the author calls Reformation Churches. It's not clear how this trend can be reversed.

31 A little vengeance, maybe:

The IDF today claimed they had eliminated Saeed Izadi, one of the alleged masterminds behind the October 7 attacks in Israel by Hamas.

The head of the Palestinian Division in the IRGC Quds Force was reportedly killed in an airstrike in the Iranian city of Qom - although this has not yet been confirmed by Iran.

'Izadi was eliminated in a safe house in the heart of Iran, following a prolonged intelligence effort,' the IDF said.

57 A U.S. bishop newly-appointed by Pope Bob lead a group of priests and other faith leaders to a southern California federal courthouse on Friday to plead for illegals not to be deported.

"Our presence made them scamper away. When ICE agents saw us come into the courtroom, they submitted the names and photos of the persons they were seeking to the court, but then they didn't stay to try and apprehend them."

'Everyone knows that the optics would have not been good if all of sudden in the presence of clergy, these arrests and deportations were happening,' he added about the idea of migrants being shackled in front of them."

58 "4) Have a great weekend"

To quote the #3 up there...
Nope. No. Not a chance.

Today we have to drive for three hours, one way, to attend a wedding. If it wasn't my nephew, I wouldn't go. I hate weddings generally and the words "semi formal" make my eye twitch. Not a formal person here and when the invitation comes with a dress code (there is literally a dress code guidelines on the invitation) I just want to nope outta this event.
My dad's cousin passed away last week and the memorial service is Saturday. Next Saturday. Dammit. I can't back away from the wedding circus to attend the funeral. My girl spawn said "MOM! You would really prefer to attend a FUNERAL instead of this wedding?!?!"
I looked my beloved child directly in the eye and said a very firm "yes. Yes I would".
I really hate weddings.
If the girl ever gets married, I hope they elope.

It was not my intent to start a debate, I merely recalled an article that seemed germane to the topic.

Speaking of which, the Diocese of Lansing ordained 7 priests last weekend, the largest class since 1978.

Four more will be ordained (God willing!) a year from now, and one will go to our parish, which would leave us with four priests in residence, the most since I have been here.

I think Pope Leo is already having a positive influence with this respect for tradition, humility and creating joy all around him. He recently ordained an "underground" bishop in China, and the CCP surprisingly accepted it. 76 majority of Christians are Catholic/Orthodox, and a growing segment of the rest prefer a "direct contact" with Jesus, without ordained ministers, sacraments and the various elements of what the author calls Reformation Churches. It's not clear how this trend can be reversed.

Without men and children, the church dies.

Women give life and men sacrifice theirs, ontologically speaking.

Without honoring the Lord's command of going forth and multiplying, no endeavor will survive. No matter what area you apply it too (business, nationality, cultural, religious), the level of reproduction is the predictor of long term health.

The mainline Reformation churches, in many instances, have embraced reproductive dead ends, be it LGBTQ, contraception, or other feminist latitudes.

This is likely in response to already dwindling and splintering congregations, who sought to fill their coffers and pews with non-traditional Christians. But in their desperation they often drove off their remnant of orthodox believers.

If you belong to such a church, you should take heart. The Lord is in control, He raised up these churches for a purpose and if He tears them down, it will be for a purpose

"Newly-appointed Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of San Diego, Michael Pham made an appeal on June 11, asking fellow men of the cloth to join migrants at hearings at the federal courthouse on June 20, International Refugee Day.

Friday, he was among 16 who went to the Southern California federal courthouse to support the migrants in the US legally who were pleading their cases.

In his appeal, Pham said the migrants were in a 'difficult predicament' of being hauled before judges.

We know that migrants and refugees find themselves in the difficult predicament of being called to appear, which is what the government asks of them, and then being given orders for expedited removal from our country."

There is an interesting dynamic in how Protestants seem much more interested in the pope than Catholics are. Francis really was a key part of this, because he was so erratic and messy.

Pope Leo seems a reversion to a more disciplined, quiet and traditional pope and less of an autocrat. People may be reading too much into some of his appointments because he's honoring those of Francis' nominees that are not outright nuts.

Carl Trueman penned a column a few months ago basically stating that he could be Catholic but for Francis, which seems a really poor reason to turn away from a faith you otherwise consider valid.

I don't know about this one, either way, but there are similar theories that hold water, as far as I'm concerned.

Justin Trudeau undoubtedly IS Fidel Castro's son. His parents were huge fans of Castro and visited him about 9 months before Justin was born. That only proves opportunity. For the rest, just look at a picture of Justin's supposed father, and then look at a picture of Castro when he was Justin's age. He looks nothing like the former, and very much like the later.

Barack Obama is undoubtedly NOT the son of BO Sr. He doesn't look a thing like him. I'm not sure who the biological father really is, but Frank Marshall Davis is a leading suspect, as well as a guy who later became Pres of Indonesia (who looks a LOT like BO).

Of course, the Obama daughters don't look like either of their parents, because MOHAP.

Some pretty f-ed up stuff going on in the halls of power.

This is going to shock some folks, but I think we place too much emphasis on military service. I get why, because we need people to volunteer, but over many many years I have seen zero correlation between physical bravery and moral behavior.

In fact, people we raise up often turn into total heels, and use their medals or service as a shield.

If you go back 60 years, it was pretty much assumed that one had served and it was no big deal. Now we get fuckups like Walz or Mayor Pete who check the box and want the prestige.

135 The mainline Reformation churches, in many instances, have embraced reproductive dead ends, be it LGBTQ, contraception, or other feminist latitudes.

Are they still reformed though? The problems Luther had with Rome, many still exist because they are fundamentally opposed to Scripture but remain because of Holy Tradition. (fallen man's "contribution" to godliness)

The Big Box is apostate. Many of those mainline "reformed" denominations are apostate - Luther would reject them too in their current incarnation.

Federal authorities are trying to determine who has been anonymously ordering pizzas that are sent to the homes of U.S. lawmakers across the country and to the homes of those who help protect those lawmakers.

The mysterious deliveries have authorities worried that they could be intended to send a menacing message, according to congressional sources and others familiar with the matter.

When capturing giraffes for study, leaf blowers are used to cool the animal and ear plugs are inserted so the noise doesn't agitate the animal.

"In hot humid conditions, the use of a battery-operated leaf blower is highly advantageous to cool a hyperthermic animal down. The placement of the earplugs should prevent the animal from being startled by these external sounds.
Every few minutes, the normal body temperature was measured by placing a digital thermometer deep within the rectum. For an adult giraffe, the normal body temperature should be between 37 to 38.6 °C, not exceeding 39 °C ."

163 57 A U.S. bishop newly-appointed by Pope Bob lead a group of priests and other faith leaders to a southern California federal courthouse on Friday to plead for illegals not to be deported.

I was raised Catholic, and it wasn't until I was well into adulthood that I began to realize that (1) most of the country was NOT Catholic (2) most of the country was at least somewhat hostile to Catholics and (3) that the Pope was somewhat hostile to American Catholics.

The basic truth is that Catholicism is contrary to Americanism (which is especially interesting to point out, since it is the original Christian church, and conservatives love to claim that the US is based on Christianity). My argument is that America is about DE-CENTRALIZATION of power, because centralization puts too much power in the hands of a very few people, and that's a recipe for tyranny.

Popes have understood that America - with it's freedom of religion - was a breeding ground for NEW protestant faiths. That complete worked against it's goal of recapturing all Christians under their umbrella.

Are you talking about the Anglicans?

Francis was not the pope we wanted, but he was the pope we needed. He illustrated the fact that the pope is not a dictator, and that the Church is bigger than any man.

He pushed against boundaries and they pushed back, and his persecution of tradition had the effect of drawing more people into it than ever before.

We are seeing huge numbers of seminarians who are very orthodox. Francis was the last hope of Liberal Catholicism and he failed. That window is now closed. There are no young liberal priests to rise up and replace his generation, and that was a big part of his anger, especially at the US.

It will be interesting to see what role, if any, the Eastern Orthodox Church will play in the emerging Christian era in the United States.

It is a very masculine church, promotes large families and while liturgical, is decentralized (pope-less).

I've recently begun attending one myself after serving for ten years in an evangelical church and one thing I find extremely refreshing there is that they are not at all interested in what I think about things.

Speaking of revisionism! Check out the English Reformation and then get back to me. All the people fleeing England were not escaping Catholic persecution, but the ones launched by the Tudors and then the Puritans.

That is why the Constitution bans a state religion AND religious tests for office (go look up the Test Act in England).

Catholics supported the Patriot cause because Washington promised them emancipation in the new government - full political rights and religious freedom.

This crap has been going on for a very long time and for a church who declares its uninterrupted lineage back to Peter, and who cares that my family has been apostate for 400 years, the statement "but we are changing" is not compelling

Right, and as I said, non-Catholics worry a lot more about the pope than actual ones. I think it's a sense that he is seen as a mascot, as the president or something, when he's just the latest in a long line of succession, some better than others.

Somehow, the Church stumbles forward despite Honorius or the Avignon papacy, or now Francis.

The pope is just such a tiny part of the Church.

211 This is part of The Guardian's sales pitch to get you to become a paid subscriber:
"When the military is deployed to quell overwhelmingly peaceful protest, when elected officials of the opposing party are arrested or handcuffed, when student activists are jailed and deported, and when a wide range of civic institutions – non-profits, law firms, universities, news outlets, the arts, the civil service, scientists – are targeted and penalized by the federal government, it’s hard to avoid the conclusion that our core freedoms are disappearing before our eyes – and democracy itself is slipping away.

In any country on the cusp of authoritarianism, the role of the press as an engine of scrutiny, truth and accountability becomes increasingly critical. At the Guardian, we see it as our job not only to report on the suppression of dissenting voices, but to make sure those voices are heard."

I can't see leftists wanting to financially support yet another echo chamber or anyone else wanting to suppport a rag that doesn't have a clue what they are editorializing about in their sales pitch.

My focus for a long time was Spanish language and culture, and it is impossible to be there without following the Church. Protestant America tends to be very siloed to avoid conflict, in a Catholic society the attitude is much more relaxed, since the conflict is one within a family, not between clans or tribes.

Essentially if a version of Christianity 'works' for someone, then don't take a poke at them lest they take a poke at what you hold dear.

What we see today as churches bear scant resemblance to the churches during the Apostolic period where you had converted Jews and Gentiles that often mixed like oil and water over matters such as whether Mosaic law still applied, whether circumcising was necessary, whether the new covenant superseded the old, the different natures of Jesus, the Holy Spirit, and the Father, and so on. Ad nauseam. These ideas have been argued by far better theologians centuries ago and resolving such in gray boxes is simply lighting matches and throwing them into a powder magazine.

BTW, this is not directed at AH at all but simply the way I have seen AOS theological arguments descend into mudthrowing including claims of who is the greater victim.

-------
I've always wondered... on the first delivery do the targets of this form of harassment eat the pizzas? Because, I figure they don't realize what's going on until the 2nd or 3rd time a pizza shows up, unannounced.

And... what type of pizzas are these people ordering? Like, the cheap-o cheese only or something nice.

Lastly, it would seem to me with our intelligence community's vast trove of surveillance tools they would be able to find these people PDQ. But can't seem to do so. Unless the targets are of a certain demographic and/or political persuasion.

Once I saw this guy on a bridge about to jump. I said, "Don't do it!" He said, "Nobody loves me." I said, "God loves you. Do you believe in God?"
He said, "Yes." I said, "Are you a Christian or a Jew?" He said, "A Christian." I said, "Me, too! Protestant or Catholic?" He said, "Protestant." I said, "Me, too! What franchise?" He said, "Baptist." I said, "Me, too! Northern Baptist or Southern Baptist?" He said, "Northern Baptist." I said, "Me, too! Northern Conservative Baptist or Northern Liberal Baptist?"

He said, "Northern Conservative Baptist." I said, "Me, too! Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region, or Northern Conservative Baptist Eastern Region?" He said, "Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region." I said, "Me, too!"

Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1879, or Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1912?" He said, "Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1912." I said, "Die, heretic!" And I pushed him over.

Very astute point.

For a lot of the backstory of a variety of denominations, I found the Will and Ariel Durant histories excellent as far as seriously examining the historical roots of pre 19th century Christianity. Doesn't do as well on Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, and Confucianism simply because those systems are more alien to the Western tradition that the Durants were chronicling.

The explosion of new denominations in the 19th century requires substantial effort to even get answers to relatively simple questions of differences in theology to existing ones.

Had to do that once for a project using ordination of women and abortion and it was like hacking through a thorny thicket to get at anything solid as to church law for that denomination.

Sometimes it's more mundane. I had a friend in high school who was a preacher's daughter. According to her, one congregation her father had served split over what color to paint the rec room in the church basement. A matter of grave theological import, to be sure.

Ret Gen Keane made the observation that NONE of Iran's allies have come to its aid. Nobody else has thrown any missile at Israel, and nobody has re-supplied Iran with what Israel has blown up.

Some make a big deal about recent missile strikes, but the number of missiles being launched at Israel has plummeted down to less than a dozen per day. Israel has been effective at taking out missile batteries and stored missiles. Iran is apparently running out. Their Air Force is gone, as are their anti-air batteries.

Other than that, Iran's doing just great. A lot of great career opportunities opening up in the military and nuclear science fields...

Probably others on here too, but I happened to catch his summary of the state of things. Seems like I haven't been hearing as much about it - media is totally focused on spinning a potential isolated attack on one facility into WWIII.

The allies mentioned were basically the terror groups they've sponsored over the years (who haven't fired a shot), plus Russia & China (neither of which has sent more weapons).

Yep. I think it was around 1650.

But people don't realize that Jefferson was also a huge influence on freedom of religion. He was the one who got that going in VA, which was our most populous state at the time. It's one of the three accomplishments he had put on his headstone, along with founding a university and writing the D of I. Being the 3rd POTUS didn't make the cut, even though he doubled the land area of the country with the Louisiana Purchase.

Regarding the prospect of retaliation for an isolated US strike or two, Keane said that Iran will know better than to do that (and will be reminded). They know it will go very badly for them if they escalate a fight with the US.

Something similar might be said for Russia and China. Russia in particular is rumored to want to deal with Trump to get them to a normalized trading status in the world. China could be hurt pretty severely just by stopping the shipment of Iranian oil to them. They know not to mess with Trump.

Now that you mention that, he did say that. He's basically throwing the crazy mullahs under the bus. He wants to deal with Trump, not go to war with him. 321 The church I am a member of is part of the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA), not to be confused with the Looney Tunes Presbyterian Church USA (PCUSA). I am being unfair to some PCUSA churches where the pastor is trying to preach out of the Bible but has to keep fighting non-Biblical doctrines pushed by the hierarchy. Anyway, my church is growing, by new adherents (I am one) and by the birth of covenant children. Our church musical director has the summer off and has just given birth a few days ago to a baby girl, the fourth girl child in that family of five children, mother and father. We do lose some covenant children, but certainly not all, and we make many converts through campus ministry (we are in a college town) and other missionary work. Our retired pastor, who still works as an associate pastor under our new minister has just returned from a missionary trip to Peru where they were helping build the local Presbyterian church. They dug wells and dug in the dirt to lay foundation for the new church building. They also, with God’s help, drew souls to Christ.

322 Prayers for all above.

Pancreatic cancer, which used to seem rare, is more common now or seems to be diagnosed more often.

Please read this breakthrough in cancer treatment below. Look up the doctor, Jason Williams. He is a radiologist oncologist who has been doing this treatment for 20yrs. Had a clinic also in CA. The clinic in Mexico was done as the meds/treatment were cheaper (or so I read).

A new clinical trial, as of last month, is being done with a similar endoscopic probe for small cell cancers in Redding, CA.

The way this works is that PEF, or Pulsed Electric Field ablation, along with sometimes cryotherapy (all cancers are different for every person), sometimes injections of meds...but straight into the tumor with long needles. This provides cancer cell death that, and this is mindblowing, extends to metastasis elsewhere in the body.

The best thing is that it does not cause systemic illness from regular chemo or radiation. I believe this is the breakthrough in cancer treatment that I hope will someday become standard of care, and insurance will pay vs out of pocket expenses.

324 About the PCA: we say the Apostles' Creed and the Nicene Creed. We have a lengthy catechism based on the Westminster Confession formulated in 1632. Many couples young and old have formed within our local church and married and the young ones are busy having children. This evening one our best tenors in the choir is marrying one of our best sopranos. I guess they’ll be starting a family soon enough. Another good tenor in the choir is our retired pastor who just returned from Peru. He says he’s seen billboards in South America selling RC Church offices. I haven’t seen them, but I do not think this man is a liar.
