This was a near perfect solstice. The ecliptic plane is sort of a smoothed thing. The earth-moon system dynamics causes the earth to bob up a down relative to this plane. Nutation of the axis also adds a little variation. So, the Sun's actual ecliptic latitude relative the geocenter can be a few tenths, maybe 0.8 max arcseconds different from zero.

This time, they all canceled and Sol was dead on the ecliptic to within a tenth of an arcsecond. Perfect alignment.

187 I recently discovered evidence that triglyphs appeared on the first temple that Solomon built and that explains a “mistake” in the number of columns in the biblical description of the first temple. There is no mistake: the passage is counting the triglyphs not the vertical columns so that is why the description appears to be off by a factor of three. Note that this was centuries before the Greeks began building with triglyphs and metopes.

They were members of my church! He did NOT divorce his wife before he died. Then I googled the headline and saw the story came from ITALY about some fella named Antonio C. I guess the guys putting together the meme thought they could slander the fellah's image hoping nobody would recognize him.

1) The tax filing industry can and will send pols bribes, average tax payers will not.
2) A complex tax code means you can always find something to charge someone with
3) The government wants people to have no idea how much they are paying in taxes

223 I think the two real problems with healthcare are:

1) Due to insurance most of the costs are paid by someone else who isn't particularly concerned with your health. They want to keep costs down as much as the law and nominal competition from others will allow.

237 >> "Perfect alignment." I understood that part.

TO first order, the earth goes around the sun in a nice ellipse which is contained in a plane. This is the ecliptic. Now, in reality, you've got the Moon going around the earth, and it's plane is tilted about 7 degrees relative to that ecliptic plane. So, the Moon is tugging the earth up and down relative to the plane as the whole mess goes around the sun.

So rather than a nice ellipse, the earth's center sort of bobs up and down a smidge. This makes the sun appear to be a little above or below the ecliptic. This time, the solstice happened just at the instant (with 6 hour window) where the earth's center was dead on that plane.

An unintended intended consequence. No secrets from Daddy Government Insurance.

This is partly due to the conglomeration of health care providers and partly due to mass immigration and the expansion of the hive cities.

Most definitley 'yes' to the first part. But a big reason for that broadening chasm between doctors and patients is all due to 404Care.

Our insurance was working, if somewhat wobbly. Now health care is for the very rich (they have the money for treatment) or the very poor (Medicaid and other gov't programs). But those in the middle, supposedly helped by 404Care? Premiums, deductables and health care costs all went up while providers have more forms (red tape) to fill out (and why my doctors look at a computer screen more than me). Dems are still proud of that trainwreck forced down America's throat in a midnight vote after no one read the 2,700 page bill. But the intentions were 'good'. 404Care is more virtue-signalling bullshit from the Dems, consequences be damned.

Another, I agree with the first part, in spades. It's like doctors now have a script to follow.

As to the second part, it may have something to do with the actual education of doctors. More and more micro-specialties. The days of the old GP are really over, looking at the patient's big health picture. Now it's a Primary Care doctor (usually an internist) who is a portal to specialists, versus when I was a kid and just making an appointment to see one.

That's why I used the term 'red tape'. For us plebes, along with the increase costs, that's been the other major result of 404Care. When government steps in, red tape is sure to follow.

281 part of the problem is that so much of Health Care from the clinic to the pharmacy to the hospital are bought up either by insurance companies or by private equity, which treats the clinics, the patients and the doctors as a profit center, and asset strip anything that is available.
All the money in the world is not going to improve care and surviving illness when half or more of the money is going to the investors, not to treating patients and paying doctors.

We have good health care, but it is being stolen just like tax revenue in a third world economy

282 >> Are you using Earth Centric Inertial coordinates, or Sol centric (fixed or inertial) coordinates?

Celestial coordinate systems get quite involved -- and there are many such systems, and I only enough of the details to be dangerous.

For purposes here, we use geocentric equatorial coordinates, which is basically a spherical coordinate system with origin at the earth's center. In the equatorial plane, the x-axis points at the vernal equinox of date. I say date, because precession of the earth's axis means the equinox is moving clockwise. So it's not really inertial, just very close to it.

The equinox moves about 50 arc seconds per year, and this is the reason the tropical year is a bit shorter than the sidereal year. The two angular coordinates in this system are dubbed right ascension and declination. Declination is the angle from the equatorial plane, latitude, and not the colatitude, "theta" in standard spherical coordinates.

Now, as the earth is moving up and down relative to the "mean ecliptic of date", that coordinate system bobs up and down with it.

Now, for high precision work, such as JPL's ephemeris, another coordinate system is used. This is dubbed solar system barycentric coordinates. The origin is the solar system barycenter, the center of mass of the whole damned solar system. "Up", "north", or the z-axis is parallel to the total solar system angular momentum vector, L. Being conserved, this does not change (except due to vanishingly small exchanges with the galactic system).

The perpendicular plane to this is dubbed the "invariable plane" (because to high order, it doesn't vary). We still need to define the x-axis direction, and some very distant quasars are used to observationally fix this direction to high precision. This doesn't move, and this is very, very close to inertial in the context of General Relativity, in as much as the galactic tidal field can be ignored. Which it can be. The entire solar system is very, very close to free fall in a near uniform galactic field to the scale of the solar system.

There are many, many other coordinate systems used. Ecliptic coordinates are one. Heliocentric coordinates are another. Here, the center of the sun would be the origin, the z-axis would be the sun's axis of rotation, and the x-axis would again be the equinox (from the Sun's perspective).

The equinox moving is another vexing thing. So, fixed, epoch coordinates are used sometime. Current standard epoch (t = 0) is dubbed J2000. So, we can have equatorial, ecliptic, etc, defined at a particular equinox and a particular axial tilt at t = 0.

Forget right now about old websearch, where you need to read through five or more stackexchange page results to maybe find the exact answer you need. 337 Now, just a bit about how impressive JPL's DE440/441 ephemerides are. They use 384 point masses of note in the solar system, plus 1 distributed ring mass to account for the Kuiper Belt.

And to get to 0.001 arcsecond accuracy, you've got to be relativistic. Now, the Einstein Field Equations of General Relativity, which describe gravity, is 10 coupled non-linear partial differential equations. They are intractable in all but a few very symmetric setups and have to be solved numerically. For solar system work an approximation, called the Parameterized Post-Newtonian Formalism is used. Here you express things in series expansions and ignore the high order terms beyond what is needed for the desired accuracy.

The result. DE440 involved integrating a set of 1152 ordinary differential equations in 1152 variables. One complete run for that requires about 2 weeks on the fastest modern cluster using a few hundred to a thousand CPUs cranking.

Talk about a rabbit hole.

When I read that (and I love apple butter), I thought it's one of those recipes where the spices are so important. Probably has allspice. I use allspice in a lot of dishes, chilis, burrito meat mix, spice coating blends, a lot of things. Then I thought about my spice grinder and the allspice berries in the pantry as I grind my own spices now. But the lid cracked and I taped it. It stills works but not that well. It takes manipulation now. So I thought, I'm on the internet, let me look at spice grinders. Wayfair had my Krups coffee grinder (in black, opposite my white coffee grinder (the color difference being muy importante) on sale, from like $50 to $24, plus shipping. So I ordered one.

Rabbit hole: Successfully dug.

I would love to know the number of 'social science' careers made by people not ever able to understand/denying the reality of 'the thief at heart' concept of humanity. Some people are bad people, and not because of anything done to them. They just like to watch the world burn, so to speak. That's why some people jus' need killin'.

I guess I don't have the thief/criminal gene. If I receive back too much change, I return the overage. To me, keeping it is the same as stealing. Now when I found that $5 bill just lying there all lonely on the sidewalk and nobody else within 20 feet, well, I had to give it a home. It was the charitable thing to do.

391 Been a rough month. Short version..my older brother, the only sibling I talk to, called me on the 2nd. He wanted me to help him write a will. I went into Spokane the next day. He'd lost about 40 to 50 lbs. About 30% of his body weight. I discovered his daughter and grandsons, who had lived with him had moved to Ohio over a year ago. He has Parkinsons but this was care related. He wouldn't go to the hospital. I bought him some protein shakes. He drank one but nothing after that. I was going into Spokane every other day to check on him and try to help. A week ago Thursday morning he was unresponsive at first and not lucid when he finally opened his eyes. I called EMTs. He didn't want to go but after I told him I would call APS, he agreed. He was severely dehydrated, his kidneys weren't functioning, he had pneumonia and a mass in his lungs that was probably infected. His bp was 70/43. They moved him from ICU to palliative care on Tuesday. He seemed better yesterday but today the exact opposite. Iasked the nurses to call me if he had issues, no matter the time. They've called twice. He stopped breathing but started breathing again after about a minute. He has a DNR.

This current technological shift as I see things is going to dwarf the sum total of all the changes we have seen because of computing. There will be winners and losers in the process. Sorry to hear about your family travails and your brother's impending death. Tough row to hoe, for sure.
