This is the Wednesday night ONT.![]()
They each have a limited number of items as it would cost a lot of money to regularly send fresh clothes to them from Earth. These are worn again and again until they're too smelly or dirty to wear anymore. There does come a time when astronauts have to get rid of some of their dirty clothes. Some of them are put in cargo spacecrafts which burn up in the Earth's atmosphere, while other more expensive items like spacesuits are sent back to Earth for cleaning and repairs. An arm is a limb that's covered with suction cups from beginning to end. A tentacle has suckers only at its end, which is usually wide and heavy. Each arm of an octopus contains its own brain. That means the arm can operate on its own, or it can be controlled by the central brain. An octopus uses its arms to build its own housing and to climb in and out of shells and other objects. It uses two arms to crawl along the bottom, so those arms are sometimes called legs.Either way, keep your arms and tentacles inside the moving ONT to avoid injury. (I said "tentacles" not "testicles." But probably best to keep those under control as well.) ![]() ![]() I'm not saying his injuries were no big deal that one time, when Evil Knievel tried to jump over a hundred school buses. He got plenty banged up. I'm just saying, don't forget the big picture! You know as well as I do how things turned out that other time, when a hundred school buses tried to jump over Evil Knievel.Well played! Credit to lurker ICanCallYouBetty ![]() ![]() ![]() Up in Doncaster, Mr. Clarkson's parents - Shirley and Eddie Clarkson - ran a design business called Gabrielle Designs and created a prototype Paddington Bear toy in 1972, which they gifted to Mr. Clarkson and his sister Joanna for Christmas. The plush bear was quickly praised and Mr Clarkson's parents began to sell them in shops. However, they did so without regard to the author's copyright on the bear and Mr. Bond soon got his lawyers involved to take action against the Clarksons. As legal action brewed, the pair headed down to London to meet with Mr Bond's solicitors and by chance met the author in the lift. Mr. Bond and the Clarksons became fast friends and awarded he awarded them the licencing rights to the toy throughout the world. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Has anyone figured out why the Pentagon doesn't have a pizza place onsite? As for washing clothes in space, here is what you do:
1. tie them to a tether 2. roll the laundry into the airlock 3. open airlock 4. wait maybe 45 minutes as radiation and hard vacuum do their thing 5. pull back your clothes Done. No germs, no smell. When I was young, places like Golden Corral worked for me. But now that I am 29, I find it hard to finish an 8 oz steak and sides. I often bring the rest home for lunch at the office the next day. So, all-you-can-eat yields different results.
My go-to breakfast at a restaurant is two over easy with hash browns, and coffee. Some days I add bacon. At work, yogurt (Noosa, usually) and granola. Boiled eggses for lunch. Posted by: Pug Mahon, Macho Business Donkey Wrestler at June 18, 2025 10:44 PM (0aYVJ) 125

"Samurai Jack" is the best action cartoon ever. "The 39 Steps" works really really well, decades after it was made. Hitchcock probably made the best films. Just learned the Texas Coral Snake has a venom said to be second only to the black mamba in toxicity.
However, most bites are dry and those bites that do envenomate, only around 10% are fatal. Posted by: People's Hippo Voice -------- The teeth that deliver the venom are not fangs in the front of the mouth, but in the back of the mouth. To deliver venom, the snake has to, basically, chew on you. Every serious North American Coral snake bite occurs when someone is handling the snake. The wife described a red black and yellow striped snake in the garden a couple of weeks ago. She couldn't detail the order of the stripes so I can't be sure, but it was likely a Scarlet King. In either case, it did the usual for both species; it slithered away out of the garden. Posted by: buddhaha at June 18, 2025 11:13 PM (mGabY) 181

It’s the vegetable oil they use for french fries. Can almost choke them down when hot, almost. They turn to cardboard when cold. That’s why traditionally they are fried in beef tallow in a respectable joint. Much more flavorful, too.
Movie theaters used coconut oil to pop corn for similar reason, if necessary they can pop it ahead of time and it stays edible for hours or days. Heat lamp it, tastes just fine. Eventually, after some 'gentle' explanation of the difference in baked vs. steamed, that went back. I love baked potatoes, not microwave ones. I love the crispy baked potato skin. I will add that I've recently discovered this one neat trick with a baked potato.
Like I said, potato skins, love them. They can become a whole separate dish, with chili/cheese or whatever; plain is good to me. Anyway, I take the flesh out into a bowl, I fork in some butter and let it cool. I cover and refrigerate. That becomes my breakfast hash browns a day or three later. I pull out of the fridge to let come to room temp a bit. Start a pan. Add butter. Melt. Add potato. Spread around the pan, breaking up big chunks. Lightly, or darkly, brown. Once browned and warmed, add some finely diced onion. Let them turn translucent. You're done. Maybe 15 minutes. Potato skins and breakfast hash browns. {Wipes tear} The potato loves me. Speaking of the Copy Cat machine, I had an idea for a business once. I may have already mentioned it here, not sure. Anyway, I had a very sick cat once and I went from being hopeless at giving it pills to expert. I could get those pills down its throat in 2 shakes and no back-talk. Meanwhile, there are people who are still lousy at it and they take their cats in to the vet and pay a service fee, or they get their curtains and lower arms shredded. So I start this business called the Catter Piller. Pronounced like the pre-butterfly. Anyone who needs their cat pilled, I come around and pill their cat and charge them $10/pill or maybe $10/session, depending on how nice I am. Probably make $200/day, 7 days a week. From HearCenter.org. Children and teens can hear frequencies above 18khz. For teens and young adults typically this drops to to about 16khz. That ceiling tends to persist for a couple decades, but at ever increasing volumes. By age 50, the average top audible frequency at normal volume is around 11.2khz. Around age 70, the average person hears sounds up to 9.8khz. This is inversely proportional to one's audiophile budget.

"European leaders will meet with Iran on Friday to discuss Iran's nuclear program; hope to re-direct program to peaceful purposes" Posted by: mnw ============= Oh, for the love of-- I remember Victor Davis Hansen's words about the last time this happened. "While America, the sullen bad cop, has to sit by while Europe luxuriates in the socialist ideologies it can afford thanks to America's vigilance..." At that time, I recall the European negotiators asking Iran for some nominal concession "to silence the Americans." All copper wire and cable is “oxygen free”, it can’t be made any other way is my understanding. It’s marketing. Brake fluid often says “Synthetic” on the can now. Guess what? All of it is synthetic. Always has been.
It’s very easy to blow speaker voice coils with solid state, usually by underpowered amps overdriven into clipping. Tubes don’t do that. Lots of guitar amp designs go to great lengths to emulate the sound of tube amps, never the reverse however. In terms of distortion, the curious thing is tube amps playing back distorted tube guitar amps recordings sounds more live, more realistic. So does analog vinyl. Technically of course it is terrible, and inferior. But, I don’t listen to numbers. I listen to music. The “wooly” sound on the low end bass, and open midrange sounds very similar or like a good bar band setup. I had a lot of fun rebuilding a Dynaco 70 and FM3 tube tuner. Amazing sound. A lot of people spend way too much time listening to their stereo, but they aren’t listening to the music. It’s an elusive concept, high fidelity. I get it. But I know it can be achieved with leftover zip cord from grandma’s table lamp. Vintage solder smells better, too Posted by: Common Tater at June 19, 2025 01:08 AM (txZoB) 376

Posted by: Common Tater That's the "sounds better to me" argument. Aeons ago, on rec.audio.high-end on Usenet, the scientific types there would prove that digital wasn't "ruining" the sound by setting up a turntable and tube amps, and putting an ADC and DAC inline with them. A/B tests never found anything. I think they'd burn CDs off the turntable outputs, too, and A/B the original turntable/vinyl versus recorded-CD/CD-player. Also indistinguishable, if they could keep the timing close enough. Posted by: mikeski at June 19, 2025 01:14 AM (DgGvY) 390

Posted by: Mike Hammer It is all quite amusing to me. I like shinny toys but let us at least keep one toe on the ground. There are differences in how audio gear sounds but the diminishing returns curve goes logarithmic quickly. The number one thing I have experienced is the quality is the sound source and how that track was mastered is where the magic lives. I now use CD quality lossless files and they sound great. Before I went digital I had a wall of direct to disk vinyl - those things would sound amazing through speakers made of gypsum board. Today I have a AV amp, $1000 range, with a couple $700.00 2 way bookshelves speakers and 10" subwoofer. Pump Spotify through it and it kinda sucks but my ears are shot so that is a moot point. Pump the lossless files through them and things get right; it isn't a world changing difference but it is enough that the nuances of a great performance is there. YMWV. Report I just saw said 7 of 25 Iranian missiles impacted - it didn't specify whether some of the 7 were not engaged because their impact point was an empty spot. I knew this sort of discrimination was common with the short-range crap that Hezbollah and Hamas launch, but only recently saw that apparently this approach is also used with long-range ballistic incoming.
Anyway, the intercept rate has been around 90% so far, I think, so some of those 7 musta been "misses". Posted by: rhomboid at June 19, 2025 01:20 AM (1m82a) 397

Just push the Damn Button...the WORST punishment in Hell is reserved for those whom in times of crisis did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. https://tinyurl.com/EvilsAdvantageOverConscience ... It is as though there were an unwritten psychological law that evil at its most shameless–the most barbaric murder of children and civilians, the most outrageous claims and lies–is somehow, in the minute before midnight, to be treated as an exception worthy of reprieve. In each historical instance, there is of course a political imperative that is cited to justify snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.... while conscience allows us to understand ordinary crimes, it actually blinds us before the most extraordinary ones... the more brazen and relentless one’s acts of brutality ... the more likely it is that one will be allowed a second chance, and find even powerful men of conscience coming to one’s door offering to forget, to forgive, and even give FORGIVENESS a BAD NAME... Well, what I’m getting at, music production doesn’t use silly $4000 cables and silver solder and hipster wankery. The old school mixing boards and pots were analog. Ordinary copper wire connecting everything. Nothing “audiophile” about it, although maybe an argument could be made for the Neumann microphones utilizing a now very expensive Telefunken vacuum tube. These are still very much in demand even today.
What I’m getting at, if you’re already listening to distortion, what’s a little more going to hurt? A good tube design will sound more realistic, it sounds like a tube guitar amp, which is distorted as hell, typically. In terms of power output, if you want serious watts, solid state is the way to go. Also, tubes were replaced for some very good reasons in terms of long term reliability. They have also gotten expensive, old stock US and European power output and rectifier tubes. The Russians and Chicoms have restarted some tubes for the audio market and they sound OK, but they don’t last very long at all. They simply cannot pass the current the originals did without going Chernobyl. Posted by: Common Tater at June 19, 2025 02:01 AM (txZoB) 454

Posted by: 13times at June 19, 2025 01:58 AM (BsqhF) I think with their 'The Last Record Album' album, they really got their sound down. That's a bit rock funky, with a touch of blues funky. But funky all the way through. Even love funky ('Horizontal Mambo'). Little Feat funky. I love that album, and have since I bought it when it first came out. One of my albums which made the cut, buying the cd when those came out. One of those bands I am glad to have seen, with Lowell George. Bonnie Raitt opened at Norfolk's now gone Tides Stadium, a minor league ball park (Mets farm team). They had a few concerts there but that was the only one I ever went to. The stadium only sat around 6,000 people, with nobody on the infield; the stage was somewhere around the pitcher's mound/2nd base. Pretty intimate setting, all things considered. (Like a few airplanes flying overhead early on during the concert, coming and going from the city airport across the interstate.) But still, Little Feat. Abbey Road has a collection of microphones like none other on the planet including the Neuman 50. And the engineers knew what they were about when setting up the gear.
https://is.gd/8S60fr Everything has changed today. Software and solid state gear lets everybody have a studio. This is a good thing. On the other hand the old methods of how a studio was designed and equipped produced some of the greatest recordings of all time starting in the 1950s. Capitol Records had at least one studio with a garage size analog reverb chamber in the basement which was controlled by opening or closing floor vents. This in part is why Sinatra's, among others, recordings have the certain stellar sound. Posted by: Alteria Pilgram - My President has convictions. at June 19, 2025 02:16 AM (NXz8h) 474

Bands of today don't get the road tested development of playing a 100+ gigs a year for years and it affects how bands sound live. For a few years I had a part time gig at a major live theater in Seattle. During that time I got to see hundreds of acts and you could always tell which bands were green as spring leaves. Ushers are the most brutal critics on the planet; the dissing that went on was legendary. On the other, a band could play 3 notes and everybody would be falling over each other to get into hall.
