Jan Steen's paintings are always a pleasure to view. Each person has their own pose and facial expression. The lighting is appropriate for the scene, outdoors or inside. The detail, both for landscapes and interiors, is realistic so it doesn't distract from the activity in the image but invites the audience to pay attention as they keep looking. There is a candid snapshot feel to the scenes but done with artistry. His interior scenes, like this one, usually have a window and a view of the land outside. (Shades of the Mona Lisa.)
Like this painting, many of his images are of everyday activities by ordinary folks. I wonder if this was an influence on the later Scandi painters like Carl Larsson. Posted by: JTB at June 17, 2025 09:46 AM (yTvNw) Posted by: The Teacher at June 17, 2025 09:46 AM (gYVB4) 69

An element of Steen's paintings I enjoy is there is often some humor involved. In this case it's the chaos in the room while the schoolmaster upbraids the kid. In others he has a group of card players with the woman cheating with a smirk or a family portrait with one uncle sitting in the hearth (not lit at the time). Just a bit of fun added to the scenes.

I had Miss Hashagen in third grade in 1963 at PS 160 in Bay Ridge Brooklyn. She was 63 at the time. First hired by NYC Public Schools in 1923. She never had another job and worked there until she was 72. Searching her name recently, I found out how much she made and what raises she got. Also found the nice little brownstone she lived in for 50+ years.
She never learned to drive, took subway to work. She was a very good teacher, wore those clunky granny shoes. Never hit me with a wooden spoon. Posted by: Another World at June 17, 2025 10:03 AM (G5+As) 126

Over the weekend, the U.S. Air Force dropped not one but two enigmatic Emergency Action Messages (EAMs).
On June 14, a 246-character encrypted code blasted across the High‑Frequency Global Communications System (HFGCS)—the same system used to transmit emergency alerts to our nuclear-capable bombers, missiles, and subs. The very next day, June 15, another code—this time clocking in at nearly 290 characters—was broadcast . EAMs usually top out at around 30 characters. Shortly after Israel began its military operation targeting Iran’s nuclear program and its military, Leftist editors on Wikipedia proposed deleting the article “Destruction of Israel in Iranian policy” linked from the military operation page, as the Iranian policy is a key component of Israel’s justification of the operation. Discussion is bitterly divided between those advocating deletion of the page or merging it into other articles and those arguing for keeping the page.

My best round ever was 90. And that was a pretty easy course. So 18 over part since I assume it was a par 72 course. The average handicap for us golfers is 14. So 16 is over par is about the typical golfer. And 14 is for people who track their handicap. A lot of people don’t. And those people tend to have very high handicaps.
