I lack, apparently, that part of the brain which appreciates "art". I don't give a damn that someone invented a new means of smearing paint with a sardine or used 40 pounds of paint for a 2 inch by 3 inch piece. I don't "feel" anything when confronted with a canvas which just has a bunch of random shit on it. I do enjoy paintings which look like something and were done well, even if they're not 'realistic'. Posted by: Bulg at June 18, 2025 09:57 AM (77rzZ) Bardo was a pub where my brother used to hang outvwith friends back when he moved out there. There was a core group and people just kind of went in and out around the fringes. I would join the group when I was in town to visit and it was pretty clear to me there was something just off about them. So because I'm the smart one, I did a little digging and found one of the ringleaders was not a very decent person. In retrospect I should have caught on early when he grabbed my ass. So I let my brother know and that was that. "Bardo" is shorthand for "is my sister going to check out my friends?" Posted by: Taylor at June 18, 2025 10:07 AM (H621s) 166

Tempting though it is, better a failure in exile than a martyr to the cause.
Posted by: Brother Tim It's a crap shoot. The Shah was a dick, but exiling and allowing Khomeini to live came back to bite him in the ass. Over the next 26 years, Pahlavi consolidated authoritarian rule, suppressing dissent through the controversial SAVAK secret police, while aligning Iran firmly with the Western Bloc during the Cold War. In 1963, he launched the White Revolution, a top-down modernization and land reform program that alienated many sectors of society, especially the clergy. Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini emerged as a vocal critic and was exiled in 1964. On 16 January 1979, Pahlavi went into exile as the last Iranian monarch, leaving his duties to Iran's Regency Council and Shapour Bakhtiar, the opposition-based prime minister. On 1 February 1979, Khomeini returned, following an invitation by the government. https://tinyurl.com/yrpbupu6 Posted by: rickb223 at June 18, 2025 10:38 AM (jxGzv) 286

Posted by: Sponge That's cool. We were financing that car, and replaced it with the current midel of the same car, two years older. It basically added an extra year of payments on top of the payout and new loan term. Iran is not an Arab country.
Posted by: Chuck Martel at June 18, 2025 10:37 AM (Dv3i1) Thanks Aaaahhkkxtchually Guy! But OK, replace Arab with middle eastern. Posted by: Its Go Time Donald at June 18, 2025 10:38 AM (/CkK4) The core problem with most of the middle eastern countries is that they had never actually been countries before 1918, so they had no legacy of self government to fall back on. Almost all of them were just remnants of the Ottoman Empire, and before that a succession of Empires going back at least 2500 years. Eqypt had a long tradition as an independent country - that gave them the pride to self govern. On the other hand, Syria has *never* been a real country, and neither has Iraq, therefore they collapsed without a strong man. Saudi does pretty well with one of the only types of government that can thrive in the area. Iran has a long history of independence and civilization, and I believe they at least have a good shot.
