Google in the wiring closet with a lead pipe: The internet went down. It was Google's fault. (Tech Crunch)
Google Cloud said it started investigating service issues affecting its customers at 11:46 a.m. PT. As of 2:23 p..m PT, the company said it had implemented mitigations, and expects to have its services back up and running within the hour.
You started investigating issues 44 minutes after I was woken up by the outage? Good work, guys.
At 11:19 a.m. PT, Cloudflare also said it was investigating service disruptions affecting its customers, according to its status page. At 12:12 p.m. PT, Cloudflare said it was starting to see its services recover after investigating the issue.
Cloudflare KV was affected by the Google outage, and it in turn took down the rest of Cloudflare.

And that took down everyone else, since Cloudflare handles about 20% of web traffic worldwide, so it's a rare site - like this one - that doesn't depend on it.

Also, yes, they did post that note at 12:12 PM, but the "starting to see" does a lot of heavy lifting there. An hour later and our sites at work that are routed through Cloudflare were still completely dead.
"This is a Google Cloud outage," said Cloudflare spokesperson Ripley Park in an email to TechCrunch. "A limited number of services at Cloudflare use Google Cloud and were impacted. We expect them to come back shortly. The core Cloudflare services were not impacted."
The core Cloudflare services were not impacted, it was just that you couldn't reach them because everything else was on fire.

Tech News

AMD pre-announced its upcoming Zen 6 "Venice" server CPUs, and a little reading between the lines shows some significant changes. (Tom's Hardware)

These will lift the maximum core count from 192 to 256, increase performance by 70%, double I/O bandwidth, and increase memory bandwidth from 614GB per second (per CPU) to 1.6TB per second.

More and faster cores is pretty normal, but doubling I/O bandwidth sounds like PCIe 6.0, which is exactly twice as fast as PCIe 5.0.

That memory speed sounds like magic, though. Gen 3 MRDIMMs would achieve that - with an effective transfer rate of 17.6GHz, by running multiplexing two or more chips per module at the same time - but MRDIMMs announced so far only deliver half that speed.
AMD also announced its MI350X and MI355X AI GPUs, which have stuff. (Tom's Hardware)

288GB of RAM and 256 CUs - compared with 16GB of RAM and 64 CUs on the latest 9070 XT consumer cards. And 8TB per second of memory bandwidth compared with "only" 640GB per second.

These are a slightly different design though, optimised for AI, called CDNA as opposed to RDNA used in AMD's laptop chips and consumer graphics cards.

The next generation promises to provide "UDNA" which will unify the two designs.

There is no wider network of apps. Yes, the protocol is nominally open, but has no significant use. Bluesky is it right now.

Already, people are using the protocol that powers Bluesky to build social experiences for specific groups - like Blacksky is doing for the Black online community or like Gander Social is doing for social media users in Canada.

5 I kind of cringe when I hear phrases like the "black online community." Just as " I'd cringe when I heard the "white online community" as well. I can share appreciation for great writers who happen the European or American writers.who were or are I can appreciate different cultural traditions and histories of people from say England, Scotland or Ireland or part of what is now Russia where my father's family came from. However, I am more interested in the fact that people share values and a Judeo Christian background and cultural inteterests. I sm going to stay away from anyplace that defines itself as the "white online community"

24 Good morning, one and all. I left work early for my MRI appointment. The traffic gods were feeling kind and I was actually in the area almost 40 minutes before my appointment. This required a stop at Chick-Fil-A (AKA The Lord's Chosen Chicken) for a sandwich.

With food consumed, I went into radiology, checked in and was escorted in slightly later than my appointment time. The procedure went well; took about 15 minutes to get everything done. But they had noise-canceling headphones and a Pandora account so I could listen to music.

The images were uploaded almost instantly and now I wait for word from my doctor.

38 Miss Linda attended her kitten yoga at the library yesterday. Yes, there were real live kittens; the local shelters brought close to thirty (!) adoptable kittens, all shorthairs and all colors, in carriers and let them loose among the yoga-ists following the routine on the big TV screen. Mostly there were women, young and old, though I did see one guy with man-bun and his own mat. I suspect not a lot of actual yoga got performed with the little baby cats pouncing and trotting around looking cute . . . which is the essential function of kittens everywhere.

Linda wants me to stay and participate next time. I told her I'm not doing a man-bun under any circumstances.

52 Yesterday I mentioned getting small repairs done to my ancient (1994!) and treasured Eddie Bauer shoulder-strap briefcase. The shop I went to yesterday has closed; the owner is not reopening after his surgery earlier this year. There's a shoe repair place who has re-done my boots in the past. Yelp reviews suggest they do handbag repairs as well. I'll nip out there this morning, have a coffee and croissant across the street, and see what they can do for me.

There are a couple of other choices in town. If nobody can help, I guess I can go, reluctantly, with one of the India-made goat leather briefcases selling for $50 on eBay. A Saddleback $600 bag is not in the cards, esp. since I won't be asking the case to trudge with me to work every day.

Ben Had, there are not a lot of horse equipment places in this pesthole that I see on a basic 'Net search. Maybe on the North Shore, which is still a bit more rural and where people have actual, yanno, money. I can make some calls, though.

It shouldn't be this difficult to get minor repairs on what is essentially a big handbag.

Next week, I plan to drive up to the shining metropolis of Jackson, MS, to visit a full-range tobacconist shop there. Not this Saturday -- one of those NoKings "protests" is supposed to happen there at noon, and the shop is on the far NE side, so I'd have to drive through town and risk unpleasantness spilling over onto the Interstate. 74 I have a backpack from the final CES press event by 3Dfx before their dire situation became known to all and they were bought by Nvidia. The press event lacked any kind of live product demo or even a video presentation of a demo. I told my colleague on our way out, "They're done."

But the backpack was really nice. The stitching holding the top of the straps began to fail after about fifteen years. A local shoe repair guy was able to fix it with his industrial strength sewing machine.

149 I switched over for the tail end of a Cheyenne episode from 1955-56. James Garner has a small role in it, for the third time this season. Warners was clearly grooming him for bigger things.

What puzzles me is that Cheyenne seems to change hat style and color every two or three episodes. Always he has the same gun, with light-colored grips like a bone-handled knife, but different hats. He was not a settled law enforcement guy who stayed in one town like Marshal Troop in Lawman. Maybe we were supposed to conclude he led such an active life his hats got destroyed on a regular basis.

171 I should emphasize/amplify what I wrote earlier about NWS NEXRAD WSR-88D radar (Spinks field) in the Dallas/Ft Worth area plus the two FAA TDWR (Terminal Doppler Weather Radar) and Gray Field NEXRAD were inaccessible for over 8 hours yesterday coincident with the Google Cloud outage event ... the ONLY weather radar that was operational yesterday afternoon in the DFW area (outside of local CASA radars) was operated by TV CH5 KXAS.

The OOS (Out Of Service) status of the NEXRADs and TDWRs was noted on the NWS's own status websites, so it wasn't just determined by observing 'stale' imagery followed by conjecture on my part.
