37 From Alaska Watchman:

"In the Mat-Su, however, No Kings activists plan to infiltrate the historic Palmer Colony Days Parade by officially marching down main street with anti-Trump banners and signage.

Other Alaska protests are scheduled in following communities: Ketchikan, Juneau, Gustavus, Haines, Valdez, Copper Basin, Palmer, Anchorage, Soldotna, Homer, Kodiak, Healy, Fairbanks, Nome and Kotzebue."

Why? What are they hoping to accomplish? They might as well "march for science" for all the good it will do. The number of folks in most of those communities would not fill a decent sized football stadium.

And WTF is "Copper Basin?" That's an area, not a town.

Yeah, it's totes unfair that the defenders outnumber attackers! Sun Tzu said so! Why, an overwhelming number of defenders may deter the holy anti-Ice peaceful demonstrators from burning the Federal buildings and bashing-in the heads of evil stormtroopers with bricks and half of a cinder block! Unfair!

And we don't care what the threat environment for US stormtroopers is in Syria and Iraq, if any are there they must outnumber stormtroopers deployed anywhere in the US by Drumpf!

Here's what I zoomed in on: "protecting a tiny two-block complex of Federal buildings in LA!"

Which is so Nazi, because that's the main thing Nazis did was protect government buildings from rioters.

I thought that were wading into the crowds like they were trying to take an enemy town.

But worse they're doing a job that if you don't try to vandalize a federal building--if you can keep that much in your pants--you won't run into them.

Just like I heard the NG's job was mainly to protect that LAPD while they were doing their jobs. Even somebody from DU was quoted as saying they've only seen clashes with the LAPD.

But there is so much spinning to do.

Rand is wrong.
One, it's nothing like the Norks.
Two, the Americans should see more of their military and in fact they need to. Out military comes from far too small segment of American society. If you don't have a family member in the service, few even understand what it means.
Third, public parades are a pain in the ass for the troops. All the prep, all the waiting around, all the rehearsals. But once it's done, the troops are almost unanimously glad they were.there. Troops also gain something from the experience.

187 Had an unusual power outage this afternoon in Houston caused by thunderstorms. Power flickered off for several seconds, about 5 times in a row. Then no power. Then some of my LED lights came on at reduced brightness, and a few items had their power indicator LEDs lit. This cycle repeated about a half-dozen times over 5 minutes. Finally all power was lost for three hours. I'm not a sparky. I assume one leg of the 220 circuit to my closest transformer was powered, but not both. I never saw an outage like this before.

191 Rand is wrong.

You’re right, it’s nothing like the Norks.

But it is wasteful, and I don’t care for it. I’ve been funding the MIC my whole adult life. I don’t want to waste one more cent than necessary.

________

There's an episode in James Gould Cozzens's Guard of Honor where a local businessman has a meeting with the executive officer of a new Army base in WWII.

He knew there was an army out there somewhere but had never actually come in contact with it. So it puts him on uncomfortable ground with the colonel, who in fact is an idiot.

How you view a military parade is the difference between seeing the participants as agents of state power or as representatives of the citizenry charged with defending them.

197 Parrot lifespans are directly related to the size of the bird. The really long lives occur in the big birds - the cockatoos and macaws. There 50 is common and 70 and 80 are not unheard of. We had a Quaker parrot, a much smaller variety, that lasted for 24 years. Wish we had dogs that lasted that long.

I fundamentally disagree.
Organizing the event. Coordinating with other agencies. Issuing an operations order. Transporting soldiers and equipment to a specific place and time. Ongoing maintenance, housing and feeding the troops. Provide medical care. Review and rehearsal
of the operation. Conduct of the operation. React to unexpected issues. And then recovery.
This is pretty much what the soldiers were going to do in one way or another anyway. The costs are sunk costs.
And at the end of the day, it is a hell of a recruiting event.
