Evening and morning for this Woden's Day, whether you are a late toiler or an early riser! Or an insomaniacal, as I am. Woke up at 1:45 after going to bed at 10:30, dozed off and on until 3:30, and finally gave up. Pffft. It rained yesterday afternoon and evening; maybe it's less hot out there and I can go for a walk later.
Maybe. Maybe after years and years, MeTV will shift from showing Barnaby Jones at 3 am to something else for a change, too. Whassup? Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at June 11, 2025 04:54 AM (omVj0) 12

Two of the May escapees from Parish Prison are still out there, with a $50K price on each of their pointy little heads. Where is the modern day Josh Randall to track them down?
And the sheriff has fired various employees . . . but according to a city council member, didn't take back their keys. Yes, you *could* make this stuff up. But fiction, unlike real life, is supposed to make sense. Nobody would believe this sort of thing in a novel. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at June 11, 2025 05:07 AM (omVj0) 25

I don't really understand the attraction of Twitter and Bluesky.
Imagine the people who used to stand on a soapbox in the town square and disclaim on whatever topics they felt were important. Ignored ~98% of the time, ridiculed 1% of the time, and maybe making someone rethink stuff 1% of the time. Take the same type of person and give them a soapbox with an indicator of how many people agree with what you are saying or at least think it was worth quoting to other people. That would probably rival crack cocaine as a high for those folks. Posted by: Richard Cranium at June 11, 2025 05:18 AM (kcTlG) 35

I have what might seem like an odd question for the golf players . Background: My son is working Temporarily ) unless he gets promoted
at a place that deals with turf grass for golf courses and I guess for athletic fields. He is working hard is very reliable and has a pretty long commute each way. He always says that work is fine and we're all thankful to God he's getting paid. However, I think he would like to do something connected to research. I try to encourage him right now to say golf is very important to help people unwind and get exercise so the turf growth and maintenance is valuable So, here is my question: what has playing golf been important to you in your life? I can't explain why I love to golf. My back has prevented me from doing any golfing so far and I'm annoyed about it. Did go to the Chiro and now feel much better. I'm going again on Monday. Hopefully, I'll get straitened out, more or less. Need to lose about 50 pounds too. As to your question, Fen. Some guys love the competition and you can play golf way into your senior years. I'm not really all that competitive but love the challenge of golf. A well struck shot off a golf club is a beautiful sound. Someday's I think I'm improving, the next I'm wondering why I play this stupid game. The challenge, I guess. Keeps me coming back.

@99/Blutarski: "If I remember right, the guy who played the principal in Ferris Bueller got busted for child porn. Long time back."
That'd be Jeffrey Jones who played Principal "Ed Rooney". From an NY Post article 2 days ago: --- Jones had a colossal fall from grace in 2002 when he was arrested on charges of soliciting a minor for nude photos and possession of child pornography. He pleaded no contest to soliciting a minor and prosecutors dropped the child pornography charge. The actor was sentenced to five years of probation, one year of psychological counseling and two years of drug and alcohol abuse counseling. As part of the deal, he was also ordered to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life. --- Article here: https://tinyurl.com/4abt4t7x Posted by: Grumpy and Recalcitrant at June 11, 2025 06:34 AM (O7YUW) 107

Gender refers to words, not people. Romance languages mainly. Historically sailing ships, and perhaps pickup trucks, are referred to in the feminine.
Sex is the word properly used. Not gender. For example “There are two sexes. Boys have a penis. Girls have a vagina.” It’s very important not to let leftists define the terms in any debate. Words mean things. In order to pervert people, it is first necessary to pervert the language. Euphemisms are part of this process. It is a strategy, a technique. “Undocumented” for example. (That isn’t even close to accurate. They have all sorts of documents. Just not in English. The idea is to smooth things over, and make it sound like they lost their wallet or something. New American Oxford Dictionary
USAGE The word gender has been used since the 14th century as a grammatical term, referring to classes of noun designated as masculine, feminine, or neuter in some languages. The sense denoting biological sex has also been used since the 14th century, but this did not become common until the mid 20th century. Although the words gender and sex are often used interchangeably, they have different connotations; sex tends to refer to biological differences, while gender more often refers to cultural and social differences and sometimes encompasses a broader range of identities than the binary of male and female Posted by: m at June 11, 2025 07:03 AM (CQE5S) 135

The shame agenda doesn’t resonate as much as it used to. “We support diversity inclusion and if you don’t you’re a caveman.” That angle hinges upon toxic self-centerdness that seeks to prop itself up constantly by feeling relevant - it needs causes to champion and to feel like it’s making a difference. The cohort of people who have reached an age where they finally come to grips with the fact that every issue in the world isn’t somehow their fault or something they need to fix must eventually realize they’re being played.
The ones that cling on to the shame narrative are secretly narcissists of the highest order who have too much free time. Hence blue sky. Posted by: H at June 11, 2025 10:07 AM (2gjbv) 160

For some definition of "works". X.org is a dumpster fire and always has been, rooted as it is in 1980s concepts of how display graphics works. It took Microsoft decades to come up with a graphics API and a kernel architecture that would work reliably on whatever grey market dogsh*t chips were in your homebrew PC; a bunch of Communists in their mothers' basements hasn't a prayer of that.
