Saturday Night Joke and Other Funnies

An American legislator hosts a Russian legislator at his very nice, upscale home on a lake. The Russian is impressed and asks him how he affords this on a legislator's salary. The American points and says "See that $50 million bridge?" The Russian nods. "I got $55 million allocated to it, and through various means, I funneled $5 million of that to my own pocket in the process." The Russian looked very impressed.

Later, the American visits the Russian, and was amazed when he saw that the Russian had an entire mansion. He asks him how he afforded it. The Russian points and says, "See that $50 million bridge?"

"No" says the American.

"Exactly" says the Russian.

It's National Bourbon Day!

Flag Day, The US Army's Birthday, and National Bourbon Day. Can we represent all of that in a single photo? Why, of course we can!

club-army-flag-bourbon.jpg

What is bourbon anyway?

A Guide to America's Original Whiskey

club-barrels.jpg

Bourbon is a type of primarily corn-based whiskey that is made in the United States and aged in new charred-oak barrels. Although it legally must contain 51% corn in the mash (or total makeup of grains), most bourbons are often made with anywhere from 60-86% corn. The other grains in a bourbon can vary, but may include rye, wheat, or barley. There are no regulations as to how long bourbon must age, but to be labeled straight bourbon it must age for at least two years in new charred oak.

This is helpful!

club-bourbonfacts.jpg

OK - but what's the BEST bourbon? That's a subjective question that involves a lot of different factors.

Disco's 3-factor, as-objective-as-possible answer:

1. It tastes the way YOU want it to taste
2. It is priced at an amount YOU are willing to pay
3. It is available anytime YOU want it

Yeah - YOU determine the answer!

That 3rd one is the tricky one. Some brands (looking at you, Buffalo Trace) make great varieties of bourbon and are often at the top of people's lists of favorites -- but they are not always available everywhere.

So keep trying different ones and find the one that YOU like best!

Actually, there's an important step in there before sipping it. Smell it!

Club ONT Wedding Advice

Why Burying A Bottle Of Bourbon Is A Southern Wedding Tradition

Burying a bottle of bourbon keeps the rain away on your wedding day?

Time it right: You'll want to bury an unopened bottle of bourbon exactly one month before your wedding date near the site where you'll be reciting your vows.

The right way: Also, it has to be bourbon (not whiskey) and it must be buried upside down to ensure the best possible weather for your big day.

The last step in completing this Southern tradition actually happens after the ceremony. Once you've officially sealed the deal, you have to dig your bottle of bourbon up and share it with your wedding party.

Four Roses makes outstanding bourbon. Their standard "yellow label" is only 80 proof, so not enough burn for me. But their single barrel and small batch select varieties are staples at Casa de Disco.

Pepper is an interesting distillery. I'm a fan of their barrel strength rye.

It's still bourbon but it starts getting expensive, as bourbon does evaporate over time and you get less and less out of the barrel.

I also find old bourbons to be a little bitter. Eagle Rare is a 10 year that is very smooth, however.

The sweet spot for me is 4-8 years.

56 Springsteen. Per Wiki:
"Born to Run is the third studio album by the American singer-songwriter Bruce Springsteen, released on August 25, 1975, by Columbia Records. Co-produced by Springsteen with his manager Mike Appel and the producer Jon Landau, its recording took place in New York. Following the commercial failures of his first two albums, the album marked Springsteen's effort to break into the mainstream and create a commercially successful album."

You have to admit, having people hating on your music after 50 years is kind of impressive.

Depends if you want it to be good. Anything worth buying should be aged for "several" years. There are some decent ones that are only aged 3-5 years. I'd say 8-12 years is the time for a solid bourbon. More than that for really good ones.

If you miss one of the rules, you ask your marketing department.

There's a Canadian one (missing the "in the USA" rule) that calls it "bourbon-style" whiskey.

Posted by: Bertram Cabot, Jr. at June 14, 2025 10:19 PM (63Dwl)

Depends on what scale you're operating. If you're producing on the same level as Jim Beam, it'll take a few years before your bourbon can be considered good to sell.

But if you're just selling a few gallons here and there at first, it shouldn't take more than a few weeks or months. It's all about how much oak you have available for your product to come into contact with; a small batch in a small barrel will actually age quite rapidly. One company (Oak and Eden) actually sells oak sticks you can toss into a jar of white liquor, leave out for 3-7 days, and supposedly end up with a nicely-aged product.

Posted by: Erebus- Ex Killer Whale at June 14, 2025 10:31 PM (elaR+)

91 Bourbon can gain proof while it ages. This is perfectly legal. As long as it enters the barrel at 125 proof max. As it ages, evaporation occurs. Water levels can decrease while alcohol levels may not decrease at the same rate. This is how some barrel strength (or cask strength) bourbons are sold above 125 proof. Nothing illegal about that. Thankfully!!

105 Happy Birthday, US Army!

The red item on the emblem is a Phrygian Cap. Associated with liberty from ancient times.

>>The Phrygian cap, also known as Thracian cap and liberty cap, is a soft conical cap with the apex bent over, associated in antiquity with several peoples in Eastern Europe, Anatolia, and Asia. The Phrygian cap was worn by Thracians, Dacians, Persians, Medes, Scythians, Trojans, and Phrygians after whom it is named. The oldest known depiction of the Phrygian cap is from Persepolis in Iran.

Although Phrygian caps did not originally function as liberty caps, they came to signify freedom and the pursuit of liberty first in the American Revolution and then in the French Revolution, particularly as a symbol of Jacobinism (in which context it has been also called a Jacobin cap). The original cap of liberty was the Roman pileus, the felt cap of emancipated slaves of ancient Rome, which was an attribute of Libertas, the Roman goddess of liberty. In the 16th century, the Roman iconography of liberty was revived in emblem books and numismatic handbooks where the figure of Libertas is usually depicted with a pileus (hat in Greek).

Now you know!

Working a mid-range a guy did that. Would not let me pass and would not speed up. Kept me pinned. I started playing with him, distracted him so much to the play that he stopped paying attention to the road only interested in stopping me.
He was a suit.
Almost ran into the car in front. Coffee and breakfast biscuit were all over his clothes. Don't know what happened for his next appointment. I made mine.

260 People around here, it being a rural area, are not interested in protests. When I was in town today folks were doing what they always do on a Saturday. Going to the grocery store, putting gas in their car, getting stuff ready for Church tomorrow or getting ready for work Monday. It's a lazy small Southern town. Now when football season starts it will get a bit more lively. But for now they just tend to their business. Guess that's why I love this place.

334 I toured the USS North Carolina recently.

The thing about it i noticed right away is the sheer size of the ship and the obvious power of its (3) 3x16" turrets, and its batteries of 5" and 1.1" guns, and 20mm AA automatic weapons.

And, of course, the resplendent display of Japanese flags it had on it's hull.

But once I got below decks I noticed the quality of the work. Every one of millions of welds done beautifully, and burnished to a shine. Racks of sensitive equipment for electromechanical targeting in perfect alignment. Galleys and laundry facilities and print shops built to spec, and to withstand the most adverse conditions.

Truly impressive.

Because his early idea for getting rich was to be the hardest working most dramatic old school bar band in the world he had a pretty kicking live shtick in the 70s and so developed a big cult plus the critics hyped him because he was a lefty.

Was lucky to be aboard the Iowa when she was still in service. I believe the New Jersey has a deal where they fire some of the 5-inch mounts with blanks, once a year, for a donation.

Was aboard the New Jersey when she was brought out for Vietnam. Open house here at North Island. I recall I was the same height as the display 16-in projectile they had on the deck, which gives an idea of my age. I remember the teak decks were among the things that most hit me as a kid.

439 Not familiar with the granular detail enough to see whether there is a particularly "political" pattern to Israeli infrastructure strikes so far, to enhance chances of popular unrest. Fuel facilities near Tehran, hit pretty hard, those gas lines are going to get worse or maybe disappear altogether. Drone hit on a gas field - seems demonstrative ("do you really want some a this?").

Electrical grid in Iran is s**t and unstable already, taking it out would be child's play (soft kills, or control rooms, for easier restoration post-festivities).

I recall reading "Hotel" by Arthur Hailey (an author whose specialty was fictional books featuring how insiders deal with disasters, like "Airport" in case you're younger than 29). "Hotel" featured a young psycho who burns the hotel down.

Anyway, he's at this resort or whatever, and he sees that his mother shaves her pubes so she'll look like a child down there and it's portrayed as sick.

Frankly, it is kinda sick IMHO. Not that I judge anyone nowadays.

There’s a need to build a 1 mile road in DC and the guy in charge of that is taking bids. Contractor from Mississippi bids $1M. DC thinks well that’s reasonable. Then a contractor from California bids $2M. DC guy thinks well that’s more expansive but maybe he’s more experienced. Finally a contractor from Chicago bids $5M. Guy in charge is incredulous. How can you be so much more expensive.

Chicago guy says, here’s how it works. You hire me for $5M. I hire Mississippi guy for $1M and we split the $4M profit.

Deal, says DC guy.

Probably realized an anti-American album wouldn't sell huge in 1984 so calculated with the flag and jeans cover most people wouldn't listen closely to the lyrics and the lyrics would make the lefty critics happy and he would still get the $$$$$$. After the touring for the album was over he basically told his long term loyal band they were on their own and completely changed the sound.

470 Thank you for the ONT.

Great News! My 2 stoplight has a McDonalds! My late Mother and I were so excited. We didn't eat fast food much but would end up driving to the next towns and cities for Arbys or A&W.

Tough day. My friend went at 10pm to get me a 6 pack, Big Mac, fries and chicken nuggets. I am a good friend too. Brought him to a nearby city to pick up a rental car. Bringing him back Monday. We have all been amazing friends to each other in horrible times.

My living situation has been jacked around by my brother for 5 months since Mom died. I never wanted more than 50% despite taking care of them for years into their 80's and 90's.

I figured he'd give me a year to get my caregiver life together. Nope. Twice he cancelled my living situation and threatened to sue me out of the house. I only took care of our elderly parents for 14 years. Classy.

Ben Had in another thread had it right. He feels guilty on some level.

But he came to pick something up today. We were supposed to be done. I let him in the house, still partly in his name, let him grab his crap and spend time crying in Mom's room I went for a walk.

482 He was supposed to be there for 5 minutes. Unannounced. After tossing my living situation up for 5 months. Twice cancelling on the last day. And I gave him extra time.

I came in and called for him. No answer. Went upstairs. Not there.

I actually hoped in my heart that he tried to teach me a lesson and hung himself in the basement. No such luck. I started going downstairs and he was coming up.

He told me have a good life in a bitchy way. I told him the truth which I was going to take to my grave not to hurt him. But I didn't imagine him being like this. Mom and Dad would both be so disappointed in him.

But Mom pretty much stopped talking on Monday. She dropped fast. People who were talking to her on Friday were coming into the room shocked she was almost gone.

But on Wednesday, one of Mom's friends came into the palliative care room. I was leaving to give them time together. Mom called out my name over and over.

I told that to Steve. I have no regrets. Dad and I were great. Mom and I were amazing. We told each other to have a good life. He cracked saying he never wanted to hurt me.

489 I was on a work trip and got a tour of a rum distillery in the Carribean. As we went through their warehouse, I saw a large number of barrels labeled Jim Beam. The owner of the distillery explained that the barrels could be used only once for Bourbon but they could be reused to age their Rum. Recycling, in a way.

Given the number of different rum labels I saw on that tour, there is likely ZERO difference between brands of rum.

492 Good job asshole.

If things work out, it'll cost me about $55,000 to stay in the house for 2 years while I get my life together.

Caregiving sucks.

His car was in the driveway then the street for about 10 minutes. I think my brother was simulating human emotion.

Finally left. He has a cunt wife which I was apparently always correct about. His kids are good but they all LOATHE me, so I no longer have any immediate family.

But the cat Snowflake stolen in May is back! So Mom gone in January, Uncle Leonard in February, hard drive and Microsoft account in March, Trumpy stolen in April, Snowflake stolen in May and I lost the rest of my family this month. But Snowflake is back.

And I have friends I am determined to take care of.

And a few beers and classic 'Twilight Zone' episodes on.

And the cat and dog inside.

Tomorrow is a rest day. We have a rental to return on Monday.

Good night all.

Thanks for letting me vent.

I think others, Ben Had?, on another thread called it right. My mother had 4 brothers. That I like and care about! One is a Marine still working in his mid 80s, one in the Army and my favorite because he is pissed off as most of us---- he jokes---I think Coast Guard.

And then we had my Uncle Pete. Polio as a kid. Always walked with a cane. Worked as an orderly in a hospital at a job he loathed. And took care of Grandpa when he was dying of lung cancer and Bousha...Grandma...in her old age too.

Dude was Batman. FREAKING SERIOUSLY. BATMAN.

But I have never heard any of my uncles express any appreciation for him.

Sci-fi Saturday night on MeTV is basically Irwin Allen appreciation night. Lost in Space, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, Land of the Giants, and Time Tunnel.

He pioneered the technique used in Star Trek TOS of shaking the camera while having the cast grab on to something and throw themselves back and forth to simulate the ship/submarine/airplane being buffeted. He used that in the "meteor storm" scene here in E1 of Lost in Space.

While I enjoy these early "golden age" sci-fi series with their cheesy SFX and "monster of the week" stories and such, it does annoy me how the writers can't even be bothered to get what should be middle-school level understanding of astronomy and space.

For example, tonight, a controller called the White House to report that the Jupiter, due to engaging its "hyperdrive" willy-nilly, was now "out of our galaxy" and hopelessly lost in space. Well, champ, the Galaxy is a big place indeed. It was going to take them 5 years to get to Alpha Centauri, which is relatively near, and nothing compared to the Milky Way Galaxy's diameter.

You can generally substitute "solar system" for their usage of "galaxy". And then, early on, trying to mimic "rocket tech talk" they'd likely heard from real launches of the day, they reported the Jupiter II was a "maximum dynamic pressure". The scene showed the ship well out in space. No, champ writer, max dynamic pressure occurs very low in the atmosphere, where it is still thick. It increases with speed, but decreases with density. The max occurs pretty low.

547 One, of among many reasons, why Japanese ships fared worse than ours in battle was on-board fire suppression. Our ships were drilled in that, the Japanese not so much. Maintenance plus 'shit happens' drills. I don't see that happening when everything is fate in a god's hands. No resposibility for fallure. No wonder the Dems are in love with muzzie invasions.

549 To Vic. RIP, and thanks for all the news!
Posted by: JQ at June 15, 2025 01:58

Seconded JQ. His news was great as were the tales of the neighbor borrowing some brown.

National Bourbon Day, my Dad celebrated that about every day the past few yrs. After the covid shutdown let up he developed a routine of stopping by several establishments in the afternoon and having "just one" before eating supper and heading home.

But since his drink was bourbon on the rocks, light on the ice, his one was more like 3-4 ounces. He was a sociable guy who missed Mom more as time passed it seemed.

Since he died May 29 I've heard from folks I never heard of about how they enjoyed his company and conversation. RIP Dad, you were the easy to talk to guy that you admired your Dad and Uncle Warren for being.

Yeah... damage control is something that is practiced literally every day on a ship, with at least part of the crew, even in port.

I was a Damage Control Locker Leader... one of the few who would be in charge of those efforts... note... most of those lockers were NOT controlled by Officers... but Senior NCOS who had years, if not decades of experience.

I was never in the service, just a Navy brat from Nahfuk. Being on base(s) a lot growing up (indoor swimming, 8-lane bowling, etc.), there were two things I remember. One was the sound of the jets. No matter where you lived in Norfolk, there was the sound of jets overhead, moreso when actually on base. Two was the smell of paint. Somebody was always painting something. A ship's hull in the heat of summer, a handrail in front of a building here, a door on the building over there. The only concession to the heat being the sailors could roll up their light blue denim shirt sleeves. But the painting was constant, along with scraping. Maybe the budget ran out of money for cans of paint.

That's hilarious.

Not entirely the same, by a mile, but my late Mother was a nun for 14 years in Cleveland. It wasn't constant painting BUT they did constant cleaning.

Mom told me she never touched a Bible.Always cleaning.

557 Stateless,

Those Navy ships in port, along with anything in the port itself, were painted with a strong-smelling oil based paint. There was a lot of salt water moisture around. The need for scraping and painting was/is constant. At least to keep a ship ship-shape. From some of the pics I've seen of USS Rust Buckets in various ports, it's embarrassing.

Thank you for that. It's interesting information.

I'd think a steel ship wouldn't need such maintenance.

563 That's originally an African joke.

An African and an Asian go to college together. Five years later the African visits the Asian in his large, beautiful home with a BMW in the garage.

"My friend, how did you afford this?"

The Asian points in the distance and says, "You see that bridge over there?"

The African says, "Yes."

The Asian smiles, rubs his forefinger and thumbs together and says, "Ten percent."

Five years later the Asian visits the African. He has a palatial estate with a fleet of luxury cars.

"My friend, how did you afford this?"

The African points in the distance and says, "You see that highway over there?"

The Asian says, "No."

The African smiles, rubs his forefinger and thumb together and says, "100 percent."

564 What I remember most from the original Kokomo music video is a stunningly beautiful Asian woman in a bikini as the camera pans the beach bonfire scene. Maybe halfway through or so. Otherwise, I grew up in central Indiana, and I’ve been to Kokomo. It’s not a place to go back to.
