THE MORNING RANT: A Ship Full of Burning EVs Abandoned and Left Adrift at Sea

Last week, a cargo ship in the Pacific Ocean, a couple hundred miles south of the Aleutian Islands, had to be abandoned due to a fire that couldn’t be contained. The ship, “Morning Midas,” was transporting vehicles, including hundreds of EVs. The ship is now adrift in the Pacific, still on fire.

“An abandoned ship full of EVs is burning in the Pacific; The crew of the Morning Midas had to abandon ship in lifeboats off the coast of Alaska.” [Popular Science]

A cargo ship transporting 3,000 cars was abandoned in the middle of the Pacific Ocean on Tuesday after a massive fire broke out. As of Friday, the ship was still burning. The blaze may have been fueled by the vehicles’ lithium-ion batteries, which are notoriously difficult to extinguish once ignited.
The ship, named Morning Midas, was reportedly carrying 3,000 cars on a journey from Yantai, China to Lázaro Cárdenas, Mexico. Of those vehicles, about 750 were fully electric or partial hybrids, powered at least in part by large lithium ion batteries that can short circuit and ignite extremely hot fires.

Aside from the risk of an uncontainable fire on a ship at sea, there is the mounting problem of the cost to insurers of ships that keep getting destroyed, as well as the value of the destroyed cargo.

There is also a nasty environmental impact. As Darren of Plymouth documented at Twitter, ”The Morning Midas cargo ship, carrying electric cars from China to Mexico, is on fire and abandoned, a potential highly toxic floating lithium bomb. Burning EV batteries release dangerous chemicals including hydrogen fluoride, hydrogen chloride, and hydrogen cyanide, as well as carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, and methane. These leach into the environment. This is the green movement so many worship in action. This vessel will continue to burn until it sinks.”

These electric vehicle fires at sea are establishing a pattern. At least no crew members died in the Morning Midas fire. A crew member on the Fremantle Highway was not so lucky two years ago, dying in that EV-fueled fire.

A fire broke out on the Fremantle Highway on July 25, 2023, shortly after the vessel left Germany loaded with approximately 3,800 vehicles including up to 55 electric vehicles. One crewmember died in a poorly organized evacuation of the vessel, but the others made it to safety in the Netherlands. The fire burned for a week before the vessel was brought to Eemshaven and later to Rotterdam for the salvage operation.

Another ship, the Felicity Ace also had to be abandoned at sea in 2022 because of an EV-fueled fire. The abandoned ship eventually sank, carrying with it a stewpot of toxic chemicals to poison the seabed below, and also carrying with it a load of electric vehicles and luxury cars, including Porsches and Bentleys.

Thousands of cars, lithium-ion batteries, oil, gas, and an entire cargo ship now litter the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. On March 1, the car carrier Felicity Ace sank beneath the waves near the Portuguese Azores archipelago. Now, ecologists are worried that pollution from the wreck will impact the rich undersea environment the carrier has invaded.

At what point do shipping companies finally start refusing to transport these lithium ordnance devices?

Those can eventually penetrate the membrane separating the anode and cathode, resulting in a short at some point down the road. Once one car goes, that's all she wrote.

Well, there are roughly a 1/4 million vehicle fires per year, per the NTSB, the thing that typically causes a LI fire is a some short or overheating of the battery pack that causes a runaway chemical reaction.

The problem with putting out EV fires is that that you can't get at the source of the fire as the battery packs are well protected and typically integrated right into the belly of the vehicle.

The bottom line is that EV's make no sense at any level of analysis.

A lot of advanced fire fighting materials are hard to deploy on something as small as a car and are often make of toxic materials.

Well, they don't appear to be mounting a salvage operation. If I had a support ship, I would be tempted to mount a salvage operation. Board the ship wearing Hazmat gear, drop the ramps, and jettison the burning cars (and any non-burning ones in the way) overboard. Claim the ship and the residue of cargo as salvage. Should be worth millions.

Either way, they care not about the environment.

EV's should be shipped in an air tight hull, so if they do light, oxygen will be limited. IF the fire could be contained, they can make it to the closest port to work the clean up/salvage.

Otherwise, just sink the damn thing and let the marine life figure it out as it always seems to do.

I said this yesterday, but the thing about 3.5% is that it seems unserious. It is like a sales tax on goods- not meant to get high enough to discourage. Maybe that is not the idea, not try to stop the remittances so you can capture some value from them. So they do not stop and find another way to transfer.

As a salvage proposition, there are some non-electric cars on board, too. Once you have jettisoned the burning cars, some of what remains may be smoke damaged. You can still get good scrap value from those. The lead-acid batteries have value. So do the tires. Engines could be sold. So could body parts. The ship could be repaired and put back into service.

Li batteries aren't like dry cell batteries, they have a 'management' system in them that monitors and regulates cell parameters to regulate discharge and charge. Under certain conditions, they will undergo 'runaway' and the results are pretty spectacular, even in the smaller sizes.

This is why EV battery fires are so nasty and hard to fight; they do not need any external oxygen to keep burning. When Lithium batteries heat up, they release their own oxygen that will fuel continued burning. Dumping them into the ocean should put them out, since the ocean is an infinite heat sink. (for all practical purposes)

I used to buy no-name ChiCom lithium CR123 batteries for my flashlights, weapons lights etc. because they were super cheap. Had several of them go boom, including a set that destroyed my Pentagon Light in my bedroom at about 3am. You can tell the cheap ones because you can smell the lithium fumes coming off them, but the big problem is that the Chinee no-name manufacturers often don't bother putting in the little anti-short circuit board that's supposed to be in each battery.

Switched over to Surefire and Streamlight CR123s because they actually run proper quality control.

We watched his news conference last night on streaming (LA TV station), and he seemed kind of wishy-washy. I don't know about "cartel light", but again, this sort of thing is a political appointment.
And apparently, it was all caused by the National Guard being Federalized to protect the Federal Building in LA.
Otherwise, mostly peaceful, except for the pallets of cinder blocks for the demonstrators to throw at police, blocking the highway, fires started, fireworks shot at police and mounted police, etc, etc.

But...deporting illegals is popular, waving Mexican flags in protest of American attempts to deport illegals is a bad image, and Trump's popularity is reportedly (according to CNN) skyrocketing.

I don't know why the Dem messaging machine that underwent a massive shift upwards in competence and shrewdness in 2019 or so seems to be to retarded right now; the turning point in the 2016 election season was, very specifically, leftist violence with mexican flags waving.

I suppose it's the result of infighting and cash flow issues. But maybe they think rioters getting shot gives them an advantage.

This isn't 1968 though. Any redneck can plonk down about 600 bucks and get a rifle and glass with a modern caliber that makes it much easier to hit something at the better part of a mile with minimal instruction. I think the midlevel lefties don't know what they are flirting with, and the soros types do but wildly overestimate the effectiveness of western police states.
