Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | THE MORNING RANT: A Ship Full of Burning EVs Abandoned and Left Adrift at SeaA cargo ship transporting 3,000 cars was abandoned in the middle of the Pacific Ocean on Tuesday after a massive fire broke out. As of Friday, the ship was still burning. The blaze may have been fueled by the vehicles’ lithium-ion batteries, which are notoriously difficult to extinguish once ignited. The ship, named Morning Midas, was reportedly carrying 3,000 cars on a journey from Yantai, China to Lázaro Cárdenas, Mexico. Of those vehicles, about 750 were fully electric or partial hybrids, powered at least in part by large lithium ion batteries that can short circuit and ignite extremely hot fires.Aside from the risk of an uncontainable fire on a ship at sea, there is the mounting problem of the cost to insurers of ships that keep getting destroyed, as well as the value of the destroyed cargo. There is also a nasty environmental impact. As Darren of Plymouth documented at Twitter, ”The Morning Midas cargo ship, carrying electric cars from China to Mexico, is on fire and abandoned, a potential highly toxic floating lithium bomb. Burning EV batteries release dangerous chemicals including hydrogen fluoride, hydrogen chloride, and hydrogen cyanide, as well as carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, and methane. These leach into the environment. This is the green movement so many worship in action. This vessel will continue to burn until it sinks.” These electric vehicle fires at sea are establishing a pattern. At least no crew members died in the Morning Midas fire. A crew member on the Fremantle Highway was not so lucky two years ago, dying in that EV-fueled fire. A fire broke out on the Fremantle Highway on July 25, 2023, shortly after the vessel left Germany loaded with approximately 3,800 vehicles including up to 55 electric vehicles. One crewmember died in a poorly organized evacuation of the vessel, but the others made it to safety in the Netherlands. The fire burned for a week before the vessel was brought to Eemshaven and later to Rotterdam for the salvage operation.Another ship, the Felicity Ace also had to be abandoned at sea in 2022 because of an EV-fueled fire. The abandoned ship eventually sank, carrying with it a stewpot of toxic chemicals to poison the seabed below, and also carrying with it a load of electric vehicles and luxury cars, including Porsches and Bentleys. The Sunken Felicity Ace Cargo Carrier Is a Pollution Hazard for Undersea Life; The ship that went down with thousands of Porsches and Volkswagens is bad news for local marine organisms [Popular Mechanics – 3/14/2022] Thousands of cars, lithium-ion batteries, oil, gas, and an entire cargo ship now litter the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. On March 1, the car carrier Felicity Ace sank beneath the waves near the Portuguese Azores archipelago. Now, ecologists are worried that pollution from the wreck will impact the rich undersea environment the carrier has invaded. At what point do shipping companies finally start refusing to transport these lithium ordnance devices? That's VERY "environmentally responsible", I'm sure.
Nothing like poisoning the air and then dropping the poison into the ocean. EVs are not, have never been, and are VERY unlikely to ever be "the answer", mainly because they are trying to answer an evil question. Posted by: Formerly Virginian at June 09, 2025 11:02 AM (zjgNU) 7

You can put the fire out by filling the cargo holds with sea water. Since it is a RO-RO ship, free surface effect sinks the ship quickly then.

The leftists who ban plastic straws also ban plastic bags. It’s hilarious how the bag thing developed. Enviros wanted plastic bags to save trees. So they got their wish. Then 5 minutes later plastic bags were evil and paper bags were good again. So they went back to the thing they hated. Which shows it’s never about a thing they want. It’s always about destroying what exists currently. Posted by: Its Go Time Donald at June 09, 2025 11:13 AM (XOc1v) 68
I can easily imagine a scenario where the last EV driven onto the ship (or really any of the EVs) forms dendrites on the Li anode. Those can eventually penetrate the membrane separating the anode and cathode, resulting in a short at some point down the road. Once one car goes, that's all she wrote.

>>For a brand new vehicle? That's some shit QC. Well, there are roughly a 1/4 million vehicle fires per year, per the NTSB, the thing that typically causes a LI fire is a some short or overheating of the battery pack that causes a runaway chemical reaction. The problem with putting out EV fires is that that you can't get at the source of the fire as the battery packs are well protected and typically integrated right into the belly of the vehicle. The bottom line is that EV's make no sense at any level of analysis. Posted by: Thomas Bender at June 09, 2025 11:14 AM (XV/Pl) 71

Li batteries aren't like dry cell batteries, they have a 'management' system in them that monitors and regulates cell parameters to regulate discharge and charge. This is why EV battery fires are so nasty and hard to fight; they do not need any external oxygen to keep burning. When Lithium batteries heat up, they release their own oxygen that will fuel continued burning. Dumping them into the ocean should put them out, since the ocean is an infinite heat sink. EVs have very real, significant problems that the enthusiasts tend to ignore. Forget the fact that they're unpredictable bombs. Other problems include the materials needed to make them, the power grid needed to charge them, and the infrastructure needed to support their higher weight. I’m not saying once they go up that it’s not a problem. I’m just saying unless the battery is improperly manufactured ( which is a problem and considered an outside factor) a lithium battery doesn’t just spontaneously combust. Posted by: polynikes at June 09, 2025 11:44 AM (VofaG) I used to buy no-name ChiCom lithium CR123 batteries for my flashlights, weapons lights etc. because they were super cheap. Had several of them go boom, including a set that destroyed my Pentagon Light in my bedroom at about 3am. You can tell the cheap ones because you can smell the lithium fumes coming off them, but the big problem is that the Chinee no-name manufacturers often don't bother putting in the little anti-short circuit board that's supposed to be in each battery. Switched over to Surefire and Streamlight CR123s because they actually run proper quality control. Posted by: IllTemperedCur at June 09, 2025 12:05 PM (y9nCu) 360

47 When you consider all the ships that went to the bottom during WWII, and all the ships over the years that sank in storms, whatever, the few carriers with EV's aboard will have negligible environmental impact on seabed life. All protests to the contrary are just biologists and oceanographers trawling for funding.
If the Morning Midas has 12000 feet of water under her keel, just put a torpedo in her and be done with it. US Military has a new weapon called Rapid Sink. It's a bomb designed to glide toward a ship, enter the water just short of the ship then glide under the hull and detonate. The upward force of the explosion then the subsequent fall into the cavity in the water caused by the bomb breaks the ship in two. Pretty much the same as a torpedo exploding under the keel. They tested it, successfully about 6-8 months ago. If they mate that up with the Rapid Dragon delivery system ... damn! Posted by: JB1000 at June 09, 2025 12:07 PM (+i0FF) 371

I can easily imagine a scenario where the last EV driven onto the ship (or really any of the EVs) forms dendrites on the Li anode. Those can eventually penetrate the membrane separating the anode and cathode, resulting in a short at some point down the road. Once one car goes, that's all she wrote.

They were installing 60,000 gallon refrigerated brine tanks on their container ships to prevent losing it to an EV fire.

Unleash the soundwave weapon that causes them to shit themselves.
-------------- It works on the upper digestive track and well as lower DI. Totes shit show. I like introducing them to Directed Energy, especially if they armed with bricks. Then there is the snot slip and slide. Its like Twister on Acid. Posted by: pudinhead at June 09, 2025 12:21 PM (FmapG) 435
They should do a live, on the streets, episode of The View, from outside the police line. The jokes would write themselves.

Robert, I turn off JavaScript on my phone to read this site.
I can’t see or watch the X videos though unfortunately. But it makes the page and comments manageable. Posted by: haffhowershower at June 09, 2025 12:27 PM (tdbOv) 440
"But...deporting illegals is popular, waving Mexican flags in protest of American attempts to deport illegals is a bad image, and Trump's popularity is reportedly (according to CNN) skyrocketing."
I don't know why the Dem messaging machine that underwent a massive shift upwards in competence and shrewdness in 2019 or so seems to be to retarded right now; the turning point in the 2016 election season was, very specifically, leftist violence with mexican flags waving. I suppose it's the result of infighting and cash flow issues. But maybe they think rioters getting shot gives them an advantage. This isn't 1968 though. Any redneck can plonk down about 600 bucks and get a rifle and glass with a modern caliber that makes it much easier to hit something at the better part of a mile with minimal instruction. I think the midlevel lefties don't know what they are flirting with, and the soros types do but wildly overestimate the effectiveness of western police states. Why is a ship from China, going to Mexico, off the coast of Alaska? I am wondering if this is another form of the Chinese soft war - send all the EV cargo ships on a route so they run past the US coast.
