A bit of Old Swill on tap now and again is better than drinking out of an old leather shoe. One of the most iconic users of tin over cardboard signs were breweries, which began using them for advertising in the late 19th century. These signs, featuring the distinctive designs and became fixtures in taverns, bars, and distributors across the county. During World War II, tin became a valuable resource for the war effort, leading to a decline in the production of tin over cardboard signs. Many existing signs were repurposed or recycled to support the war effort, making surviving examples from this era particularly rare and sought after by collectors. After the war, the golden age of signs began to wane as new advertising mediums such as television and radio gained prominence. Many signs were discarded or replaced with newer materials, contributing to their scarcity today. Jukebox history. Seeburg, Rock-Ola, Wurlitzer, and more. Is the jukebox destined for extinction or just a rebirth for a mobile world? Here's a rundown of what really happened in the course of jukebox history.DIVE BARS!, a jukebox, and raspy/sexy voices go together like grit and charm - rough, but somehow still fuego. Or is it eyeliner at midnight and questionable decisions? Someone is fresh out of emotional give-a-damn.

We used to have a very seedy dive bar just off campus in my town. In the basement of a flower shop. Frequented by drunken college students and alumni (especially during Homecoming and St. Pat's).
You did NOT want to see what that place looked like when the lights were turned all the way up. Every table was barely held together by spit and a prayer because they were covered with carvings of patrons' names. Decent burritos for lunch, though. But don't look to closely at them, either. It's gone now, turned into a four-story student apartment building. Posted by: "Perfessor" Squirrel at June 10, 2025 10:10 PM (GlyvH) 35

Ahem, well,
"You Never Even Called Me by My Name" is a song written by Steve Goodman and John Prine. Prine requested to be uncredited on the song, as he thought it was a "goofy, novelty song" and did not want to "offend the country music community". Goodman released the song on his eponymous 1971 debut album Steve Goodman to little acclaim. Henry Weinhard's also ran a series of commercials where a smiling trooper from the Oregon State Beer Patrol constantly intercepted a couple of down on their luck truckers, who were trying to smuggle a load of "Schudwiller" beer into the state.

I don't recall the name of the dive bar I hung around at in my salad days. I might be getting 29.
Had a little sunken dance floor, with bars and barstools along the perimeter so the old guys could leer at the college girls. Shitty loud dance music. Electronic dartboards, frequently triggered by the shitty loud dance music before you threw a dart. Pull-tabs served from a little counter in the corner, run by a woman who was the model for Marge Simpson's sisters. Drank whiskey-n-cokes, rum-n-cokes, whatever-n-cokes because the bartenders couldn't hear me over the shitty loud dance music. Or they just didn't care. Old-school bowling alley in the basement. Owned by the same family, I think. It was pretty nice, considering what lived above it. Posted by: mikeski at June 10, 2025 10:28 PM (DgGvY) 103

I watched Gov. Hair Gel's speech, or actually the condensed version provided by the local news. I was fortunate to see David Allan Coe live in 2014 at the Redneck Country Club in Houston. The owner went on-stage and gave us the rules for the performance. David would immediately leave the stage and not return if he was heckled, heard requests for songs, or if we yelled in appreciation or applauded during the performance. Amazingly, the crowd of mostly drunk Texans, including myself, complied for 90 minutes. I enjoyed his performance immensely.

Sawdust floors, sit on old beer barrels (seriously dented, usually), something like 17 bars in there, more than one band playing at any time, and a recreation of the Bird House Bar, which, before it burned, had the largest collection of brassieres in the world pinned to the ceiling and walls. And always smelled of stale beer and cig smoke.
I prefer the Tug Bar. Great folks, great food, heavy hand on the drinks, yes, they do know my name. They have an "overboard bloody Mary" on Sunday mornings for $75, you have to order it in advance, and it is well worth the price. Posted by: tcn in AK at June 10, 2025 10:54 PM (a4NoL) 181
First of all, a true dive bar is old. Probably been around since the 40's or so. Some of the patrons will have been steady customers ever since. The men, older, unshaven. There will be the aroma of age, stale beer, cigarettes, and unwashed ashtrays. The clintele will be consistent, the same people. Very few women, but a couple.
Any varnished wood will be worn raw in spots. Lighting will be marginal. Advertising signs will be old. The bar tender is probably the owner. Don't expect upscale liquors...or Guiness stout. There's at least an even chance that the place will be named for the owner (or previous owner) Example. - 'Fred's'. I've spent time in dozens of such, all over the eastern U.S. Now, we can move on to biker bars, a different genre. Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at June 10, 2025 10:54 PM (XeU6L) 182

"A dive bar is like porn." My addendum: "like low budget porn"* low budget (&/or amateur porn): you can see the shadows of the boom mikes; and often the boom mikes themselves are inadvertently lowered into the scenes. (oops!) The cinematography itself is about as varied as a police custodial interview-- you know what I mean. Two chairs, one on either side of a plexiglass partition. * gentrified, high budget porn is the same quality as a Hollywood movie. I think a lot of legit film directors make these. Money is money. The best dive bar in Anchorage was the Trade Winds, long gone, but once the heart of the Spenard biker gangs. Girls never got carded. Girls were perfectly safe there, too. So there I was, at a bar in Portoroz, Yugoslavia. Around 0500 a brawl erupts. This was during the World Cup Metric Football contest (1990). Scotland had lost a regional match to whomever, and they started hurling bottles and curses. Everyone scampered out of the place, and my buddy and I (we were Army medics) saw a guy run headlong into a chest-high barricade and fall flat on his back. We rushed over, and found that he had been stabbed several times. We began doing what we could what with not having our aid bags with us, since we were on vacation.
Sarge hauls us up by our collars and tells us to get the fuck out of the AO, because cops were arriving. So, we wandered off, cleaned the blood off our hands in a fountain, then waded in the Adriatic sea as the sun rose. that was a fun trip. Most infamous dive bar I was ever in was Wolfy’s, in Cory’s Christi. I was training to be an oilfield engineer early in ‘83 and me and some of the other guys and decided to go. 3 stage strip bar, lots of bikers there, we didn’t know why. We knew we were out of place when one of the girls walked up to us and “y’all must either be cops or engineers, standin’ there like you don’t know what to do next.” We stayed there about an hour but were real fish out of water, luckily nobody paid much attention to us.
A year later I was reading an expose on big biker gangs in the US, and read “The Bandidos, believed to be the most powerful gang in the southwest, and rumored to operate out of their HQ at Wolfy’s Bar in Corpus Christi…” Fools rush in and all that. A fight or three every night. Hard Rock on the speakers.

Me and a couple of buddies were off duty, after a long day of kicking commie butt in Central America. (long story).
Having departed one seedy bar after a syphilitic whore and her pimp started paying too much attention to us, we were headed towards home when we spotted an open door. Inside the door were a few tables and chairs, a bar made of a couple of planks across some tall sawhorses, and a refrigerator full of beer. We were starting to put a dent in the beer supply, when the fluent Spanish-speaker in our group urgently said, "Guys, lets get out of here! The bartender just asked me to take him home with me!" That was when we finally noticed the place was filled with nothing but men. Manly men. Who looked like they'd want to do manly things in the manner of men. We had somehow stumbled into the only gay bar in Honduras. We beat a hasty retreat and slogged home in a tropical downpour, with water over our ankles. I don't remember the name, but there was a dive/boat bar in Panama (the country) near the canal zone. The Zonies (Americans who worked at the canal zone, many for generations) gathered there after work for a quick dive or boat ride before sunset, and tradition was that five minutes before the sun lowered into the Pacific, you got your order in so you could raise a glass to surviving another day. I recall the mai tais were pretty good. I have no idea if there was a juke box, but plenty of folks made up for with their own, special renditions of beloved favorites. Volume made up for quality.

I used to frequent a bar called The Dirty Ol' Tavern. It was, most definitely, a dive bar, but the clientele weren't what you would expect. It turns out, the place was owned by The Fraternal Order of Police. It was situated right next to a prison. So, the regulars were retired cops and off duty prison guards.
Great darts. Cheap beer. Great conversations (story telling mostly). Everyone in the joint was packing, so there was rarely any trouble. National Bohemian Beer on tap. Posted by: Orson at June 10, 2025 11:12 PM (dIske) 256
Dive bars: my hometown had a bunch of them, that I never ventured into. I wanted to live. My hometown could be a bit clannish. I've been to a few around military bases. There were a few around MacDill AFB that I, sort of, remember. Ricks, The Warehouse, and one other that i can remember where its at (along Bayshore Blvd, a few blocks from the base). All were, well, dives. Nothing stands out except The Warehouse, which was an obvious front for criminal organizations. Beer was cheap and the in house band was good, so it had that going for it. Don't use the bathroom. A toxic hazard. Just piss in the back somewhere. Watch out for drug deals and gang hits. Rick's had a good in house band. I'm going from memory and this was over 25 years ago. I'm sure much has changed.

It wasn’t a dive bar, but about six blocks from my family’s last Chicago apartment was KayZee’s Bar. 66th and Kedzie in Chicago Lawn. This was 1962-65. The folks would stop in on weekends to have a few beers and watch the Cubs get slaughtered. Jack Brickhouse announcing. Hamm’s Bear, um, Beer commercials. Nobody, staff or the crowd at the bar, cared if the kids were there too as long as they didn’t get in the way, so the folks would be at the bar and we’d be off in a booth over cokes and comic books. The bartender was a friend of my parents and if it was a Saturday night after he finished his shift we all went to his place across the street from the bar and the adults would play penny-ante poker while his kids and my sister and I watched the Saturday night monster movies on Channel 5.
Gone now, the place and the people and I miss ‘em all. The building is still there but it’s been a Mexican restaurant for years. Not a dive, and not really anything special. But the thread about bars reminded me of it, so I thought I’d toss in a comment. Posted by: Just Some Guy at June 10, 2025 11:16 PM (q3u5l) 264

There were a couple of Anchorage bars in the '80s that were always running specials like "nickel beers" and "25 cent drinks". I mean constantly. Like, every night.
Most people couldn't figure out how they stayed in business. Me, I soon figured out that they were laundering money. "See, Mr. IRS Dude? We sell beers for $2 each, and here are our receipts for ordering fifty million kegs of beer from the wholesaler. So that explains how we're making $100,000 per night." I was born in Brooklyn in 1955. There were 60,000 Norwegians in Bay Ridge and hundreds of thousands of Irish. There were many dive bars on 5th and 8th Avenue. Many men here from Ireland or Norway working in the trades with their families in the Old Country. The men sent $$ home to their families, but lots of them hung out in the bars.
In those days mostly before air conditioning, the bars had screen doors in summer and every place smelled the same from the street. Stale beer and cigarettes made up most of the fragrance. Posted by: I Can Still Smell It at June 10, 2025 11:22 PM (G5+As) 276

I noticed the sunset location varies several degrees depending on the season. ----------- Tonight is full Moon, the Strawberry Moon (last full Moon of astronomical spring, or June full Moon, depending on which convention you prefer). It's also a major lunistice peak. Tonight's full Moon (07:43Z, 03:43AM EDT), will be about the lowest in can be over the horizon at meridian. That's 26.5 degrees here, which also means the Moon rises and sets about as far south as it can ever. Yep, sunrise and set angle vary with the seasons, which depends on Sol's declination. The angle the ecliptic makes with the horizon and sunset and sunrise determines timing of twilight and how fast it gains altitude. My city had 3 excellent dives before gentrification in the '00s.
Two on the second floor, one in a basement. Tile floors, plastic walls, loooong bars with the same 3 beer taps every 4ft and staircases so narrow you're rubbing navels with whatever man is going there other way. Jukebox and multiple pool tables, of course. Wine was "red" or "white" and came out of a box on the shelf. One was the only 24hr bar at the time, so it was popular with returning sailors and there was always this one midget in there and he would reliably pick a fight with any Pacific Islanders who walked in. The other one was frequented by the emotionally busted office clerks drowning their sorrows before heading back to whatever 8x10 cell he could afford after the divorce. Both were places to walk in, park up, and drink with your change sitting on the bar in front of you next to the ashtray ready to pay for the next beer. The closest thing to conversation was yes to the bartender asking "another one?" or no to whatever lonely drunk imagined someone else might care about him and his problems. Just "no". The downstairs dive was rowdy. Good times. I'd clean forgotten about them until tonight. Posted by: Nato at June 10, 2025 11:44 PM (bYJ7Q) 322
If you want to see the exact topocentric coordinates of all this at your exact location, use timeanddate.com with a URL in the form: "www.timeanddate.com/sun/@lat, long" where lat and long are your exact coordinates. Use 6 or 7 decimal places for good accuracy. Now, that's the sunrise/set/noon page. Click on the Moon pages and the others and you'll see all sorts of info. It will give rise and set azimuth and all that for every day of the year. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at June 10, 2025 11:44 PM (w6EFb) 323

North Shore Oahu had the Sugar Bar, a re-purposed traditional looking bank building. Total dive. Had a horribly out of tune old piano. Beer and supplies stored in the vault. Live music on occasion, Tommy Miller was a local fixture, and quite good actually. Totally packed wall to wall on weekends, an eclectic mix of locals, surfers, trustafarian hippies, shady characters, and military personnel enjoying their scarce time off.
Itaewon, or downtown had the Seoul Pub, an English style establishment run by a German ex-pat with Australian citizenship named Guenther. Had Guiness on tap, and bangers and beans and a few other gustatory accouterments that were pretty rare for South Korea. Prices weren’t too bad. My buddy complained that Guenther wouldn’t offer favorable exchange rates when converting dollars to won, he noted the bank just down the street had better rates. “Yes, but zee bank vill not surf you a bier” was his retort. It was cloudy at sunset/moonrise tonight, and I couldn't see the Moon rising so far south. I can see it now, through some clouds obscuring it a bit. This is lowest a full Moon can be within less than a degree, maybe 1/2 degree. The Moon's lowest declination will be tomorrow around 8PM, so tomorrow's culmination will be at 26.1 degrees, lower than tonight by 0.4 degrees, and still looking pretty full. To appear at the lowest possible, you'd have to have full Moon appear directly on the June solstice, and the declination minimum happen exactly then as well (within a few hours). We're getting about as close to that now as we ever get. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at June 10, 2025 11:49 PM (w6EFb) 330
Elon Musk retweeted Robert Scoble@Scobleizer
Unlike other automonous vehicle companies, @Tesla had its customers: 1. Pay for the R&D. 2. Pay for the cars. 3. Do the AI training. The world is about to change deeply. I've been doing a bunch of consumer research by interviewing customers of @waymo (a competitor). They almost universally tell me: 1. They don't want to own a car anymore. 2. They don't want to drive anymore. 3. They don't want to take Uber anymore. And Tesla can underprice Waymo AND provide a better experience to boot. Oh, and because @elonmusk got us to pay already the Tesla network will be profitable almost from the start. Why did I do that research? Early adopters tell me how everyone else will behave I've learned many times in my career. The ONT has outdone itself tonight!
Rainier Beer, aka Vitamin R, the elixir of my youth and college days. The brand bounced around different ownerships after the original Rainier brewery in the Georgetown neighborhood was sold to Heilman and then to the current owners, Pabst, but the good news is that it has gotten popular again with the college crowd and working man. Sadly, however, I was told just last week that Henry Weinhard's is no more. The first "craft" beer I remember, from Portland, Oregon, was indeed a legend. But as the beer is but a memory, as was the city it came from. Once a fantastic place to visit or live, Portland, for all intents and purposes, is now gone, too. Leftism is an evil bitch. Thanks, Publius. A simple though neat camping trick I learned from Colin Fletcher, shoot the azimuth of the sunrise with your compass and write it down.
Armed with this info, one can locate a tent (or whatever) to take advantage of early sunshine rays in winter. Or, alternatively maybe one might want to take advantage of maximum shade in the summer and sleep in a bit. Can even lay sleeping bag down aligned in the long shadow of a tree trunk or rock, that kind of thing. Posted by: Common Tater at June 11, 2025 12:00 AM (joemM) 338

I highly recommend the desktop version of Stellarium, if you're interested in all this. It will display more information than you can shake a stick out. You can have it project the ecliptic, equator, hour angle circles, invariable plane and all that on the sky view. There you can see how the angle and altitude of the ecliptic vary over the day. You can get a good handle on how things behave seasonally from that. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at June 11, 2025 12:01 AM (w6EFb) 340

Posted by: Kindltot at June 11, 2025 12:08 AM (D7oie) Dad would bring home Lucky Lager, in the stubby bottles, for years. IIRC it was brewed in Vancouver, WA. Then one time, he suddenly changed to Heidelberg in the keg bottle, and that was his beer of choice every evening after a hard and long, blue collar day. Brewed by Carling Brewery, Tacoma, WA. He would buy Rainier once in a while, it was usually during a summer neighborhood gathering, like Memorial or Labor Day, or 4th of July. It was strange at our house when I was growing up that sometimes a beer or two in our refrigerator would simply disappear, about the time when I turned about 14 or 15. It never happened when dad first got home after a long day and cracked the first one, it seemed to happen when he would fall asleep in his chair after having 4 or 5 and finishing dinner. And they would collect in the old refer in the garage, hidden behind the cans of pop and other things mom kept in there. To this day, it's a mystery. On the ride to Lake Tapps in the mid 70's to take a spin in somebody's dad's ski boat, we would stop at the little Lake Tapps store on the back side of the lake and buy Columbia beer, 99 cents a six of cans. It tasted horrible, but as college students, we found as long as you put enough ice in the cooler, it wasn't bad as long as you drank it fast enough. Well, the Zip van has a seat now. Looked simple, going in. "Hey! Find a piece of steel plate 14" by 12", drill four holes, weld it to piece of pipe that can slip into the existing pipe stanchion on the floor. What could go wrong?"
First, I needed a piece of steel plate. Had to liberate that from a welded-up bracket no longer needed for its original use. Break out the plasma cutter. And the angle grinder. OK, I have a sturdy plate. Lay out and drill four holes for the studs on the seat slides. Did it wrong. Twice! Ended up slotting the holes. OK, it fits the seat slides. Wut?? The seat slides don't slide. Somebody had welded blocks on them to prevent them from sliding. Cut those off. Then had to oil up the slides. and work them a whole lot to make them free again. There’s a bar off a dirt road between Aberdeen and a dirt road to another road that gets you to Olympia. The Brooklyn Tavern. Parking lot is covered in bottle caps. Inside with old logging photos and saws and antlers. It has one of two working spittoons that run along the floor under the barstools (the other is in Roslyn). They have a “Weather Rock” outside and an awesome deck.

I deleted Photoshop CS6 from my old PC and installed in on my new PC. So far so good. When I start up PS I get an error that asserts that I exceeded my activation limit and that I need to log into my Adobe account and deactivate one or more machines. Alright, totally reasonable. When I log in to do that the Adobe Activation server says I have no active devices.
Winner, winner, winner, I am a winner. Damn. After some internet searching and fussing around on the Adobe I site I end up with Adobe's AI chatbot that promptly directs me to the deactivation page. And when I tell it I need an activation reset it promptly drained all my bank accounts. Quite an escalation but it happens. Tomorrow my day is cleared out so I can spend hours on the Adobe support line. I am pretty sure the conversation is going start with Adobe telling me they don't support CS6 with me going this is not a CS6 issue with Adobe going but this issue is related to so CS6, so piss off, wash, rinse repeat. Finally, the AI chat box has disclaimer on it that notes it is known to make crap up and lie to you and anything it tells you is up to you to decide if it is lying. Alright. When I was little, would watch Concentration-- a game show-- hosted by (iirc) Alex Trebek.
After matching pairs of rectangles (that covered the whole puzzle) to uncover bits at a time, the winner would solve the puzzle if s/he could with the least amount of parts uncovered. I think. It was one of my favorite spots in NM. The woman who runs has a master degree in speech pathologies. I found that to uniquely appropriate skill set for running a saloon. Especially after 11 pm. She brings bands and host other things. Peeps drive from all over to be there. My first time I ended up photographing a wedding - they couple spaced out getting pics. It was a hoot. Another time I bought a "limited edition t-shirt" and sent it off to the boy spawn. When he went there the first time I made him wear the shirt. She recognized it in a hot second. Boy spawn was a minor royal for a couple hours. This place checks all the boxes. Posted by: Altaria Pilgram - My President has convictions at June 11, 2025 01:11 AM (NXz8h) 434

Hdepot was only letting *so many* people into the store at a time & had a line outdoors, waiting to enter. Mask required. NOPE! Costco, next town over, had the same shit... NOPE! My favorite grocer? I don't know if Tcn in AK is here, but it hit me for her around Anchorage, it will be damned low indeed. Looked it up, and it will be just 1.6 degrees above the horizon max. It will rise just 10 degrees east of due south and set 10 degrees west of south. It will just barely pop up above the horizon. And depending on local topography, you might not even see it all. If you're wondering what's going on with the Moon being so low, we're at a Major Lunistice. Lunistice = "Moon still", just as solstice = "sun still". Lo, the Sun/Moon stands still. To first order, the Moon lies on the ecliptic plane. At a full Moon, the Moon is one the opposite side of the earth from the sun. Thus, seasonally, when the sun is high, the full Moon will be low, and vice versa. The full Moon closest to the summer solstice will be the lowest of the year, and the one closest to the winter solstice will be the highest for the year. And likewise, the "lunar day", the time the Moon is above the horizon, is just opposite of the sun as well. Tonight, the Moon will be above the horizon for the shortest time of the year. Now, to higher order. The Moon's orbit is tilted relative to the ecliptic by 5.1 degrees. So, it's actually not dead on the ecliptic, but a little off. Now, the Moon's orbit is locked into that inclination. It's pegged to the ecliptic, not the earth's equatorial plane. And that's because of the Sun's tidal perturbations. But, that inclination *precesses*, rotates around ecliptic north around a cone of 5.1 degrees with a period of 18.6 years. This means the Moon's orbital angle relative to the earths' equatorial plane, will vary, with the 5.1 degrees adding or subtracting from the Earth's axial tilt. We're at the point not where that is adding exactly, and thus the Moon's orbital tilt relative to the equator is the highest it can be. And that's why the June full Moon is the lowest it can. https://mol.im/a/14798859 Posted by: Ciampino That's very sad. Scott Bloomquist was an interesting character. Great dirt track racer, mostly late models. One of the best, if not the best ever at his craft. I wonder if his cancer came back and he decided to just end it. He had been diagnosed a few years ago but then I stopped hearing about it and he kept racing. He started selling his race equipment at some point. May have needed cash for treatments. I don't know. Argentina's Milei News 🇦🇷🤝🌎 @ArgMilei · 11h BREAKING🔴 ARGENTINA's SUPREME COURT CONFIRMS CRISTINA KIRCHNER's CORRUPTION CONVICTION In a landmark ruling, Argentina’s Supreme Court unanimously upheld the conviction of former President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner in the “Public Works” case, confirming a six-year prison sentence and a lifetime ban from public office for defrauding the state through public works contracts. The decision, just announced, marks a historic moment, making Kirchner the second ex-president since 1983 to face imprisonment for corruption. The court rejected appeals from Kirchner’s defense, confirming the November 2024 ruling by the Federal Court of Cassation. The sentence includes an $80 million dollar asset seizure. Kirchner, 72, may request house arrest due to her age. The ruling bars her from running as a provincial legislator in upcoming elections, significantly impacting Argentina’s political landscape.
