Honestly, the crypt system could get complex. Eventually they had to use letters of the alphabet to keep track of what was where. This came in handy for some schemes, including the one where an alternate coinage to compete with the local nobility's was minted in one. Though as it happened, crypt "O" currency never really caught on...

This strikes me as the kind of painting intended to be shown in a gallery not hung in a residence. It is historical, romanticized and rather melodramatic but it demonstrates the artist's talent. The detail in the building is ornate and exacting, especially in the bright sunlight. The sharp division between the light and the shadowy areas catches attention and leads the eye to the internment monks and their efforts. Part of the effectiveness is it compels the viewer to start noticing the details in the dark portions where the impact of the event is most important. I like it as a painting to study more than one that has emotional appeal for me.
Perhaps because of the melodramatic feel, I can easily imagine the artist doing illustrations for Count of Monte Cristo or other Dumas books. Posted by: JTB at June 13, 2025 09:53 AM (yTvNw) 78

Posted by: Archimedes at June 13, 2025 10:16 AM (s8j++) No disrespect but you need to get out of the 80s and 90s mindset when you see a big Dow number. 625 is not a big deal when it’s out of 40,000. It’s 1.4%.it’s a blip. It’s not like in the 90s when 600 was a panic crash since the index was only in the single digit thousands. And the reason for this slight dip is because whenever shit happens in the ME oil spikes. It’s up 8% right now. And expensive oil tends to lower profits in the future which lowers stock prices. It’s not about not liking Israel. It’s like everything else, about money. Posted by: Its Go Time Donald at June 13, 2025 10:22 AM (YTjJV) 195

Met Museum Org:
Dramatic Scene with Monks in a Crypt Alexandre Evariste Fragonard, French In this scene evocative of the Middle Ages, monks process into a Gothic crypt bearing a corpse in an open casket. At the moment they enter the stagelike space, their brethren, having opened a tomb to receive the body, discover that it is already occupied, sparking a dramatic stir. The precise literary source for this composition, believed to date to the 1820s, continues to elude scholars, but the ghoulish scenario was a staple for Fragonard and his contemporaries. The painter is today overshadowed by his father, Jean Honoré Fragonard, but he was one of the most versatile and sought-after artists of his generation. There's a story there, maybe about the French, maybe about Nan Pelosi? 🤷♂️ But, I think it's very amusing (especially for this damn week) & I'd consider hanging it. Thanks. This will be buried given the other news of the day.
But consumer sentiment was up Yuuuuuge in May. After it plummeted in April with all the tariff fear mongering. Bounced up to 60. Which is a very bullish number on the economy. This is also part of why stocks are down today. Higher consumer sentiment lowers the chance of interest rate cuts. And wall st above all loves cheap money. On April 14, 2024, the Iranian Revolutionary Guards fired 110 Ballistic missiles, each carrying a 300-kilogram explosive warhead, along with 125 drones and dozens of cruise missiles. 2. On October 1, Iran launched a second attack involving 201 ballistic missiles aimed at the Israeli Air Force bases, as well as at the Mossad headquarters. 3. Intelligence files seized in Gaza, backed by U.S. intel reports, prove Iran pumped hundreds of millions of dollars into Hamas, peaking in 2023 to 300 million dollars, right before the October 7 massacre. 4. On 27 Jul 2024, Hezbollah fired an Iranian Falaq-1 rocket from Lebanon that slammed into a kids’ soccer field in the Druze town of Majdal Shams- 12 children killed, 42 wounded. Iran poured roughly $700 million a year into Hezbollah. That lifeline powered the group’s assault on Israel from Lebanon on 8 Oct 2023. Posted by: andycanuck at June 13, 2025 10:44 AM (2yoRf) 281

"Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, a critic of the facility who was arrested in front of it on May 9, said in a statement, "We are concerned about reports of what has transpired at Delaney Hall this evening, ranging from withholding food and poor treatment, to uprising and escaped detainees. This entire situation lacks sufficient oversight of every basic detail — including local zoning laws and fundamental constitutional rights. This is why city officials and our congressional delegation need to be allowed entry to observe and monitor, and why private prisons pose a very real problem to our state and its constitution. Most of the demonstrations in this regard have involved, because of geography and the actors involved, Russian defense systems. Israel's have proven to be quite good, albeit susceptible to large enough swarms (which everyone more or less knew anyway). Ours and the Chinese are still open questions. Commerce is not "granting" or somesuch. If the government needs something, it should buy it - on the open market, in a transparent bidding (for big stuff) or rules-based acquisition (for routine stuff) system. But no cash handouts to anyone, for any reason. No opaque purchasing. If you're caught feathering someone's nest, you get fired or go to prison. But most of the problem isn't in purchasing decisions larded up with graft, it's straight cash. Cut it off. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at June 13, 2025 11:02 AM (6bTRc) 332

--------- Grok @grok 43m Replying to @liorsela @DrEliDavid @Royce_Young The claim that Gen. Esmail Qaani is in Israel and an Israeli asset lacks credible evidence. Reports from Reuters, The Jerusalem Post, and fact-checking sites like Misbar confirm Qaani was in Iran, under investigation for security breaches, not in Israel.
