I rather like this painting. It captures the feel of a traveling company of entertainers for the 1700s: rough wooden walls, well used curtains to give an air of something special, the improvised tightrope supports, all realistic enough. The two circus figures in the center stand out in the painting and the crowd with their bright white costumes, keeping the focus of the art viewer and the performers' audience. The spectators are sufficiently individual but not so much they take a lot of attention from the performers. It's very effective.
This wouldn't apply to the viewer of the period but, looking at it today, there are echoes of Elizabethan and earlier times with itinerant companies of actors trying to survive on talent and content alone with minimal backdrops and few possessions. It's easy to imagine Puck giving the closing lines of A Midsummer Night's Dream or Hamlet examining Yorick's skull. Posted by: JTB at June 10, 2025 09:54 AM (yTvNw) 120

> Walloon painter Is that some area that is now Belgium?
Yeah. Walloons = Frog-speaking Belgies. Flemings = Flemish-speaking Belgies (or "Phlegms"). Both mostly Catholics. The Catholic part of the Netherlands, now Belgium, was historically known as the "Spanish Netherlands". What we now call the Netherlands was the Protestant part. Flemish is quite similar to Dutch. "Sometimes the English and the Dutch ally against the French, and fight in the Spanish Netherlands. Sometimes the English and the French ally against the Dutch, and fight in the Spanish Netherlands. Sometimes the Dutch and French ally against the English, and fight in the Spanish Netherlands." -- Neal Stephenson Nothing has changed. The Eurosavages alway prefer to fight in Belgium, if they can manage it. Why fuck up their own countries, and let's get real: what are the Belgians going to do about it? "France now has short-range nuclear missiles. Near as I can figure, they're all set to nuke the hell out of Belgium. With the possible exception of inventing Brussels sprouts, I can't think of anything they've done to deserve this." Posted by: Sir Mix-a-Lot at June 10, 2025 09:56 AM (qpyNK) 133

Star Wars burlesque?
Cosplay contests weren't enough? The ad showed two women one with some...tentacle looking thing on her head...which I remember from Return of the Jedi, and then the other wearing a stormtrooper helmet and in both cases wearing about as much as a woman might wear at the beach, and they were doing some dance routine. A number of NGOs have been implicated in this. Foremost is Coalition for Humane Immigration Rights or CHIRLA, and the photos of signs show they were printed by PSLWEB / Party for Socialism and Liberation. CHIRLA has the EIN of 954421521. Most of its private funding appears to be from DAFs, which are the hardest to trace. However 34 million of its reported 45 million in revenue are from government grants. The riots are paid for by USAID types. Posted by: rhennigantx at June 10, 2025 10:02 AM (gbOdA) 159

We picked up a portable generator for the house. 9000 watts running, forget what peak was. Had the electrician run a 30a outlet into the panel with a generator interlock plate. Gives you the flexibility to power what you want by flipping breakers, without the expense of a whole house generator. We saw "Ballerina" yesterday.
It's a tremendous amount of fun. Just a great action movie that just builds and builds, getting more crazy as it goes along. I could give some examples but that would just spoil the fun. Go in blind if you can. The story's more or less a John Wick story with a little girl training and growing up to be an assassin to get revenge on the man who killed her father. I suppose you could see a bit of girl boss if you wished but early on there's a training scene where a male trainee just keeps whipping her butt and she complains that she can't win cuz he's bigger and stronger, so- Eve's trainer tells her that everyone is bigger than her so she needs to cheat, exploit her opponents weaknesses, don't try to fight fair, fight with anything and everything she can, improvise "Ballerina" takes that bit of advice to the max and that's what makes the movie so fun. Eve often finds herself in a bad spot but then uses whatever she can to get out of it. One great thing about the movie is that once Eve finds a weapon to even the odds, she keeps using it in wilder ways until she no longer can. Excellent summer action flick with a John Wick bonus. Check it out. Posted by: naturalfake at June 10, 2025 10:42 AM (iJfKG) Posted by: It's me donna at June 10, 2025 10:42 AM (VE6XX) 290

Which, you'll not, still has NOTHING particularly to do with monarchy. Posted by: 18-1 at June 10, 2025 10:43 AM (t0Rmr) ======= I think it's more about Trump reigning in executive agencies, making them accountable to him instead of "independent". People have swam in the idea that executive agencies are rightfully independent of the president (ie, the people) for decades. Of course, it's been a crock of shit. They're deeply dependent on Democrat presidents and Republican presidents when the Republican president says the right thing. But the fiction remains. Posted by: tubal at June 10, 2025 10:17 AM (PCK5/) During Hurricane Sandy, we were without power for 11 days. Poles snapped in half, substations down. We ran off our 8KW Craftsman. never lost any food, well pump was happy. Neighbors who didn't prepare, lost food in their freezers and fridge. We even had hot water for showers. Eve's trainer tells her that everyone is bigger than her so she needs to cheat, exploit her opponents weaknesses, don't try to fight fair, fight with anything and everything she can, improvise
"Ballerina" takes that bit of advice to the max and that's what makes the movie so fun. Eve often finds herself in a bad spot but then uses whatever she can to get out of it. One great thing about the movie is that once Eve finds a weapon to even the odds, she keeps using it in wilder ways until she no longer can. Excellent summer action flick with a John Wick bonus.
