Wednesday Overnight Open Thread - June 11, 2025 [TRex]-
Good evening Horde. The time has come for mid-week shenanigans of the overnight variety.
This is the Wednesday night ONT. This is also the school is OUT ONT edition!
Just weeks after Secretary of the Air Force Troy Meinke and USAF chief Gen David Allvin restated the USAF's desire to retire the U-2, a key Congressional committee has said that it should do no such thing. The USAF was planning to cease U-2 operations at the end of September, and retire the fleet during Fiscal Year 2026, which begins on 1st October. But the House Appropriations Committee (HAC) decreed this week that in FY2026, "no funds...may be used to divest or prepare to divest more than eight U-2 aircraft." Further, the Committee provided $55 million "for U-2 programmed depot maintenance [PDM] to fully restore three aircraft."Lockheed PMD funding and operations is the key to keep the U-2 in the air. Apparently there are 31 in inventory: four two-seat trainers and the rest are the standard one-seaters. On a separate but somewhat related note, sounds like lots of pizza being ordered at the Pentagon tonight. Stay tuned.
In 1967, a proposal was made to build the world's first UFO Landing Pad as a landmark for the Town. The Government of Canada responded to this proposition and, during the grand opening on June 3 1967, St. Paul was declared the Centennial Capital of Canada.
Desperate companies don't often turn work away, so when Piero Taruffi knocked on the door in 1966 with plans for a prototype racing car, OSI was only too happy to oblige. The Silver Fox is what they came up with.
Intended to run at Le Mans in the Group B6 small-displacement class, and also set class-specific speed records, the Silver Fox was powered by a 1.0-liter Renault four-cylinder engine with tuning from Alpine. This engine was mounted behind the driver's seat in the left-hand pontoon, with seating for a passenger in the right pontoon. The aerodynamics were very clever, with three separate wings for adjustable downforce. The front wing had to be set when the car was at rest, but the driver could adjust the middle wing mid-race. The contemporary Chaparral 2E had similar technology, and you can think of it as a 1960s-style F1 DRS (drag reduction system). The Silver Fox was certainly an adventurous idea, but the collapse of OSI meant that it would die on the vine, not even properly test-driven. However, given the success of Taruffi's other projects, it might have been very fast indeed. Some sources indicate that a top speed of as much as 150 mph might have been achievable, but when displayed at Como, it was indicated that only around 105 mph might have been expected out of the Alpine 1.0L. Still, Taruffi did more with less.

I learned the word 'spelunking' in college because I actually did it. There was a cave near school students regularly visited; some graffitti went back to the nineteen tens and twenties, when it was a military college. Could go about a half-a-mile or so deep down into the hill, with a trickle stream waterfall as your reward. Not many saw that as it was a real trek, with lots of 'crawls' through tight spaces with absultely no give.
Only been into a walking tourist cave since (Ruby Falls). My crawling days were over a long time ago.

I tasked myself one time with reading a Dickens novel that was not 'A Christmas Carol' or 'A Tale Of Two Cities'. Bought a paperback copy of 'Bleak House' That was my subway book. When they go after a big-name Congresscritter who gets lots of face time on Democrat TV, let me know. Like every one who went to El Salavdor demanding the release of deportees. I never saw Congresscritters go anywhere else to demand the release of US detainees in places like Russia or China. It's almost as if they knew they were safe and it was all theater. Some old writers still hold weight, though. I reread Livy, Martial, Tacitus and the like, the Penguin Classics. But I will never reread Dickens. Once was more than enough.

The problem with Dickens is the way it's taught. I was spoonfed David Copperfield in 8th Grade: Read a chapter; take a quiz the next day; rinse & repeat. I HATED the book!
50 years later, I read it again... and discovered that I enjoyed it very much.
Dickens transports his readers to mid-Victorian England. You either like seeing what life was like then (I do), or not.

It's a grounding in The Classics. I get that. Maybe it's the method of teaching The Classics. As mentioned above, read a chapter, a quiz. Maybe then a class discussion. It's not reading for enjoyment. I tried to read 'Bleak House' for enjoyment, not as a part of any curricula. Read it. But never again. What a slog. Can't imagine reading that for a class.
The one area I'm sadly lacking is Classic Russian literature. The kind where the ending is always a stoic 'and they died'. Read a lot of Solzhenitsyn, practically his whole fictional catalogue beyond 'Gulag' (Vols. I, II & III). But that's it.

So Mom died in January. I was her caregiver for 14 years. And also took care of Dad. We were good. Dad and I....no unexpressed thoughts and he was so grateful I was here for them. He passed at 90.
We actually had a great last day together....well...before the stroke.
Mom was in the hospital but we had to go to the city because there was financial stuff to take care of.
We were at the farmer's market. We were looking at carrots. Dad made a math mistake....WHICH NEVER HAPPENED.
At the cash register he froze, someone helped me get him to the car. His speech started to slur. I pulled into a store and they called an ambulance.
Dad was worried about my future. I told him I didn't want anything. 50% with my brother. I was good.
I didn't know my brother would jack around my living situation for almost 6 months.
I was a horrible brother when we were young. I thought we were over that. I took care of our elderly parents for years. He really hates me.

To be honest, those riots were my first glimpse into the modern left. Those travelling riots were organized but presented as 'organic' in many places. When you get down to it, those '99 riots were the true beginning of the modern left, at least in The States. The violence became acceptable. Not as much as today but still more than it should have been accepted. We dig into the Mafia but we never dig into the leftist machinery. Hopefully that is going to change. At least by cutting off the funding if nothing more. You can tell when a protest is bought and paid for when you see really glossy and well-produced signage. Not a point the media ever brings up.

The other night leaving the hiking trail head a small deer - maybe a yearling - was walking right down the middle of the access road - not a care in the world - ignored my Ram 1500 for quite a while before it got bored or tired and cut right and jumped a five foot barbed wire fence like it was nothing.

The time traveler hypothesis is a fascinating one. Are the "aliens" just some advanced form of "us" from the far-future that has evolved greatly, or some other species from the far future.
Based on known physics so far, time-travel is just....highly, *highly* problematic. Consider the famous grandfather paradox. That's a show stopper, a true paradox. But, imagine we somehow rule out such contradictions.
You can still have all sorts of perverse stuff that are logically consistent and don't lead to contradictions. Consider a causal loop. Rather than going back in time and killing your grandfather, you go back in time, stumble across you grandfather as a child about to be killed, and you save him. You are now your own cause. You exist because you exist. That is equally perverse.

Yeah, my curiosity went there too. I came back to that question multiple times with him - he didn't know. I'm of age and experience that he wasn't lying or hiding - he was very transparent.
