Top Story

  • AMD's "budget" Radeon 9060 XT graphics card is here. Is it any good? (Ars Technica)

    Yes. And also no.

The 16GB model is pretty decent if you can find it for under $400. The MSRP is $349 for basic models, but they sold out pretty quickly in the US. You should still be able to find slightly faster models for around $389.

(In Australia the MSRP models are still available.)

The 8GB model is $50 cheaper and is readily available at MSRP because it sucks and you shouldn't buy it.

It's consistently faster than Nvidia's RTX 5060 and the same price. Compared to the 5060 Ti it's cheaper, and faster on non-ray-traced games, though a little slower in ray-traced titles. (And a lot slower on Black Myth Wukong which significantly favours Nvidia hardware, but that's an outlier.)

If you want a graphics card that is merely a bit expensive but not actually insanely overpriced, this is the one to buy.

(Or go back in time a few months and nab a 7800 XT for $400 like I did.)

5 >>>SpaceX is planning to build an advanced chip packaging factory in Texas. (Tom's Hardware)

That is, a factory that takes individual silicon dies and puts them together to build a more complicated "chip". AMD's server CPUs for example can contain up to 17 individual "chiplets".

SpaceX plans to go a bit further, packaging devices up to, uh, two feet square.
___
I read the article--I really did. This reeks of math, but how does a "server CPU [central processing unit]" that "can contain up to 17 individual 'chiplets'" compare to "devices [measuring] up to two square feet"? Number of chips vs size of chips, I think.

29 I seem to have missed out on a good story here. Any chance of a brief summary?

Sure. I ordered Powerline extenders through Amazon. One of them was defective out of the box so I submitted an RMA towards the end of April.

Post Office lost it, found it when I filed a claim and delivered it. Netgear claimed they never received it. Went back and forth with India for a few weeks. They finally found the device and are shipping a replacement.

32 @29/NR Pax: Good on you for keeping on them and not just accepting the loss (or theft during shipping by someone handling the package.)

I hope the powerline network extenders work out for you. Remember, you've got two separate 120 volt bus-bars in your switch panel for your house. Both of those devices need to be hooked to receptacles that are on the same 120 volt bus-bar.

I hope the powerline network extenders work out for you.

They are working fine. We've had them before but we needed to replace a couple that have decided "I'm tired, boss" and check out.

49 Okay, storytime from bus-land:

Location: Two-lane busy road, and we've hit a section with churches and cemeteries. An older lady is driving a car in front of me, and she's stopped and signalling left to turn into the cemetery. Traffic is stacking up behind her pretty good.

Opposing traffic is plentiful, and there's no break in the traffic for a while. When the break finally happens, she hesitates, hesitates a bit more, then cancels her signal. Okaaaaay?

Just as the break in traffic is about to disappear, she races across the other lane just as a pickup truck is about to reach her from the opposing lane. He hits the breaks hard (could see the front end of his vehicle dip.) A very-near miss.

Out loud, I say, "Lady, I'm thinking you're looking for a more permanent arrangement in that cemetery rather than just a visit!"

Those ads are obnoxious as well, although some men may enjoy the seeing the women. In . Low cut blouses. I hope these women- if they're real actresses-can point to some better experiences than being models for the wonders of Viagra and for lack of a better term: "perfect your poop" which is not exactly like playing Lady Macbeth or doing the sitcom "Friends" although I suppose it helps pay the bills.

The Propellerheads (90s Drum & Bass DJ duo) did a great version of “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service”.

It’s 9m20s long but I’ve always enjoyed it.

Also, Sneaker Pimps did a song, also from the 90s, called “Six Underground” that uses a six-note string movement made famous in the background theme from Goldfinger.

92 49 Okay, storytime from bus-land:

A bomb line of unguided Mk 82s would be a lot less expensive.

Put six bomb lines over the capital. In the form of a Star of David.

The big expense was for the SAMs. Standard Mk 3 and 6 are not cheep. The USS Gettysburg (CG-64) came close to being hit by Houtsi anti-ship missiles. They fired all their Standard missiles, and shot down the last two missiles inbound with Evolved SeaSparrow Missiles. Fortunately, everything worked. It was very close.

US banana giant Chiquita has laid off around 5,000 workers following a month-long strike as part of nationwide industrial action. Workers are protesting against new social security laws lowering pensions. In 2023, Panama exported $273m of bananas, making it the 13th largest exporter of bananas in the world. What do the layoffs mean for Panama and the wider banana industry?

109 Elephants’ toes, pickled in strong toddy vinegar and cayenne pepper, are considered in Ceylon an Apician luxury. As soon as it is known that an elephant has been killed in Africa, every man in the neighbourhood sets off with his knife and basket for the place, and takes home as much of the carcase as he can manage to carry. The flesh is not only eaten when fresh, but is dried and kept for months, and is then highly esteemed.

125 Living without episodic memory. (AtherMug)

Better than mistaking your wife for a hat, but still a subtly unsettling read.

--

Unsettling is s good word.

I have memory issues which I have learned are probably related to having ADHD and a problem with time. But my issue is more that my memories are a mess and mostly forgetteries.

Last week hubby asked me what tv game show it was that I went on as a student and won a small amount of walking around money .

I was like "huh,. Right. I didn't remember." I wasn't sure if it was in HS or college, but probably college. I don't remember almost any details. But I do remember the feeling and the moment of being there, behind the podium with 2 other contestants.

Old memories for me are mostly moments and emotions out of sequence.

It would be good if I kept a journal but it's not something I can hang on to doing for more than a few weeks.

I am grateful I don't have that guy in the article's problem.

Might be for the best now that Elon has had time to sleep it off.

From what I’ve read many people think what kicked this off was Trump withdrawing the nomination for Elon’s guy at NASA, Issacson, who turned out to be a Democrat with a slight case of TDS.

Apparently that was the last straw for Musk.

Which would explain why Trump was needling him with taking away SpaceX contracts.

I’m guessing Issacson was all-in on a Mars mission which is Elon’s Holy Grail.

When you get right down to it that’s been the left’s entire M.O. for forty years.

This particular subject cannot be broached, much less discussed or debated, because your opinions on the matter hurt our excessive emotionally-invested feelings on the subject, therefore it is taboo and racist/sexist/-ist for us to even talk about.

So, shut up, h8er.

It’s a nice way to get around facing reality as long as the media plays along.

Never happen, because subjects in the EU would dislike the leaders.

How does this person live in the modern world where just about everything is made with those menacing horrors known as “chemicals”?

171 Or alternatively they nay have too many elephants. Elephants have very few natural predators and live a long time. Populations build up and absolutely ravage the landscape.

Culling them and using the meat is appropriate and necessary. Or you could let them strip the land and then starve to death.

That's certainly a possibility. Here in the U.S., many states have similar problems with deer.

However, I'm not ready to credit the Zimbabwean government with that much wisdom.

Well, communism and racial dictatorships run by economically illiterate warlords tend to have that effect.

It’s only taking longer in South Africa because the economy is much larger and they decided to slow-walk the kleptocratic dismantling of it along racial lines.
